  • A couple weeks ago I did a video on the brush minnow. One of my customers favorite flies for fishing Tarpon. Recently I had a request from him to add a rabbit or squirrel strip tail on the back to give more movement. And here is that fly. As I said in the previous video on this pattern, it is versatile with types of tail or material used for the brush.
It is much easier to make this fly with a brush, however you can tie it with a dubbing loop instead of a brush if you do not have a dubbing brush table. Without the table there are ways to make brushes still, some videos online show ways. However if you plan on making lots of flies with brushes, then check out the dubbing brush table I use. It's made by Oasis Benches and is the best I've ever used. The price isn't too bad either considering most brush tables are more expensive, and most are not made to its level of quality. To check out the brush table go to www.oasisbenches.com/dubbing-...
Usually I recommend extra select craft fur, but for this small fly, the regular craft fur works. However if you are going to tie this larger then look into the extra select stuff because it will give you that extra length.

Thanks for sharing. Great looking fly, and fairly simple.
A question about color. Seems all black wouldn't 'match the hatch' for most bait fish.
Whats the application your customer uses this fly for?

He is fishing for tarpon, I know a lot of guys like purple and black for tarpon. Probably has to do with the way their eyes are, maybe darker colors are easier for them to see? Not sure, just know many (not all) tarpon flies are dark.

Nice fly. Size 2 is a little small for tarpon. How about 2/0 or 3/0? Tarpon go for black and purple but I would imagine other color combinations would work well like pinfish or mullet colors.

Yeah I think he is fishing for baby tarpon. The guy catches a ton on these though. He wants them that size.

@@McFlyAngler Then a size 2 would be appropriate. Good luck to him.
