As a convert to Catholicism from Protestant, Confession has been my greatest blessing. I have never felt such peace and calm leaving the confessional knowing that I have been forgiven and also have the priest give me advice on how to deal with stubborn sins. God Bless the Catholic Church
As a fellow convert, agreed! I LOVEEE the sacrifice of the Mass and its beauty and that we can celebrate and receive Jesus literally every day except Good Friday throughout the year but there’s something about Reconciliation! I thought through RCIA id dread going but I love it! I love it every single time! It never gets old. It gets maybe scary or even like he said humiliating or whatever, but it’s so incredibly transformative and powerful. Whether it’s just about the humanness of confessing wrongs in our lives but I know something beyond a shadow of a doubt spiritual is happening in that Sacrament. Thank you Jesus for the institution of this Sacrament
Having been away from the church for over 25 years for personal reasons but wanting to come back and didn’t know how, God opened the way for me at the hospital as I was waiting for my husband to come back from surgery. I saw the priest whom I had chatted with a bit about my life and suddenly I found myself asking him if I could go to confession sometime. He answered “How about now”. I had even forgotten how to start. He led me step by step then gave me absolution. It was undoubtedly the happiest moment of my life. Tears of joy still come to my eyes recalling it. ❤Thank you priests for always being available. We need you.
I am so happy today. I have finally made the best confession I have ever had. God has forgiven me all the past 38 years of my grave sins. I can finally be at peace and move on with confidence, gratitude and grow in holiness. Thanks be to God. Amen
As a almost 67 year old cradle Catholic who has gone to confession numerous times, it has never crossed my mind that the priest might be nervous or feeling uncomfortable because he doesn’t know what I will be confessing. I have been very blessed especially these past several years with a variety of priests who have heard my confessions. The sacramental graces that flow through them, as vessels of mercy, are profound indeed.
This is the third time I'm trying to relate my confession experience. I was plagued by two sins for years. I confessed them regularly. Through the grace of God and many priests I have been freed of these two serious sins. I've got more to go but that liberation is God's gift of grace. Don't give up.
My first confession was at age 58 and it is the greatest blessing in life and more healing than years of psychology. God bless you both for saying yes to the priesthood. I never considered how it must be for the priest to hear confessions❤ 🙏🏼😇

Seriously and generously. I’ve, unfortunately, had two disgusting confessors. One wanted to get out of the confessional five minutes yet to go who told me that he was only going to give me one sin and one sin only. This led me instantaneously to screech to a halt. It bamboozled me and he had to go through a list of sins until I found one to confess. I left the confessional wondering if I had made a good (or maybe real) confession. Many years later, I went to confession in my new parish. I had only just begun, about 20 seconds, when the priest interrupted saying: “Now for your penance say…” I said: “I haven’t finished, Father”. He then showed some irritability. Some months later, he did exactly the same. This time he was shocking, telling me to “hurry up”. I then found I couldn’t get my words out as I’d become perplexed. He then shouted at me: “Look, you’ve even written them down!” Not only did I never go back to him (and thankfully he has been moved) but it has made me nervous, hoping I’ll not get something like that again. He obviously doesn’t respect the Sacrament.
Confession is one of the most beautiful things about Christianity. When I started going more regularly, my life really improved. it is an uncomprehensible grace and just shows how God loves to forgive!
Thank God for priests who have said yes to me when I needed to confess my sins. Thank you to all you priests who made time for me. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ for these priests. Bless them and protect them from the evil one. Amen .

Every time I have heard this "what if I wake up dead on Christmas" as the primary focus of Advent study, my brain says, "remember the Serenity Prayer," and my heart follows immediately after. Ignatius of Loyola was the Patron for Sister Ignatia, who worked with Bob and Bill as the 3 of them formed AA and the 12 steps for addictions and Al-Anon. My biggest fear, right now is that if God grants a banquet in Heaven, please don't sit me too close to the desserts. Thank you Bishop Barron and Fr. Mike.
@AscensionPresents I don't know how I can afford it, Father Mike. I pay my phone bill, so RUclips and my subscription to various accounts comes with that. I even stopped doing story telling tick-tock videos and dropped myself to a slower phone instead of having those posts as a hobby and community service for homeless shelter people. I just got offered a job internally at our local airport terminal, but I don't know when I start, and it's only part time, because I don't have the financial stability to be dropped from SSDI. Eventually I hope that I will be able to be at my new job full time, so that I can participate in the company 401K and be offered internal health insurance, as well. I still have to go through the badging process. (I got my fingerprints done and all the preliminary background checks plus the background checks from when I operated a shuttle in the parking lot, so that helps) Next week, I get to do the training modules and learn more about the specific details of what my job will entail. I still get to keep working on my CDL certification credentials and building toward a permanent job operating small busses as my work experience and I still get to work on adding some more education as I begin this new job. Just listening to these little snippets and the various podcasts that get uploaded are enough. The speakers and interviews do support my personal growth and my spiritual life. They provide me solid ground for my prayer life and I am very grateful and thankful for Ascension Presents and Word on Fire. The diocese that I belong to subscribes to both of these ministries on behalf of their Catholic population as well as providing their own social media because a number of the seminary students who become interested in helping others and providing Mass do end up going to Duluth and St. Paul and Mundeleine or way out to PA, and beyond. The minor seminary students go to undergraduate school in the "middle of nowhere" SD. (That was said by a seminary student who came to Sioux Falls to the Banquet Downtown to serve a meal with his classmates. It made me laugh, because the seminary really is in the country.) I went years not going and two years ago I made the decision to go at least once a month. The first one was tough,but now I feel like I miss, something is missing. I never thought about the priests point of view. That's a great perspective. I pray we all take time to reconcile this Advent. If it's been awhile for you, please know I'm praying for you.
This is helpful to know that priests also feel nervous to hear confession, as much as I am to give my confession. Also, remembering they are human like we are. I was turned off by my most recent confession because the priest lectured me and had such a criticizing tone -
Confession is such a beautiful and wonderfully freeing gift. If you are afraid or scared of going to Confession, please ask Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Joseph to give you the courage and the strength to go! Also, it can be helpful to talk to a good priest, friends, and/or family members who are more familiar with this process to help you in going. Hopefully, this will give you the tools you need to make a good examination of conscience and knock your Confession out of the ball park, in a good way!
Thank you for this conversation. I confess the same sins repeatedly and I’ve wondered what the priest thinks about this. This does not make it easier to go to confession but I KNOW WHEN I leave the confessional I’m unburdened by the guilt I carry around.
I've had 2 experiences with Priests having a temper tantrum at me in the Confessional... these experiences have been a very detrimental effect on my life with Confession and with the Church; praise God that He has influenced me to stay in the Church and realize how many things I have to be thankful for.
I’m sorry that you’ve had those experiences but glad to know that these experiences haven’t led you astray. If we can remember that our priests are imperfect beings just like us and our focus is on Jesus always, then we’ll be fine and able to forgive/see past their behavior.
Often I leave confession feeling sad that I have offended my heavenly Father so much… such contrition … it can last for days. Other times I leave confession with such joy.

When I go to confession I always feel like I probably forgot something from the past and I never feel like the slate is wiped clean. I confessed everything I could remember from my past and now I can't come up with anything to confess and I'm not saying I'm perfect. I wish I could find one of those Priest who can tell you your sins and then I would feel like the slate is wiped clean.
Have you ever shared this feeling with your confessor or counsellor? I think he would give you an advice how to deal with it. I had a similar problem and I once asked my confessor about it and he helped me a lot. I only regret that I didn't shared this with him sooner.
God cares more about your heart than the technicality of confessing. The important part is you don’t hold anything back and confess what you remember. I always conclude with a “I am sorry for these and all my sins.” As long as you aren’t deliberately withholding a sin, all of your sins are forgiven. You don’t even have to confess venial sins. This is basic Catholic teaching. No need to worry about forgetting. If you ever remember something after the fact, you can always bring it up your next confession.
Fear not - we’ve all felt like this…I tried an all-life confession and it worked! My intelligent confessor got the message and told me not to worry about what you can do nothing about!
I am so anxious to go to confession, I have gone in 2 months, I go to mass daily, and always say I’ll go to confession this Saturday and then I end up walking out
Confession is not only humiliating its also embarrassing for me. Sets off a sense of Panic even if i Pray to Jesus to forgive me for my sins it causes great anxiety to present it fo a Priest.

My biggest difficulty with confession is sitting face-to-face with a priest who knows me very well. I volunteer for many church activities/ministries, so I'm known by our parish priest. I fear losing those positions within the church because of my sins. It is said that priests do not remember the sins of those confessing them, but they are human, and it's only natural to be shocked by the sins of a person who should not be committing them. The old "behind the screen" method is not available in our church. If it were, I would be less hesitant to confess my sins.
The funny thing is, a lot of people have heart attacks and strokes during the holidays. You could very well wake up on Christmas dead. I lost my uncle on Christmas day.
Confession, I mean by the authority of an ordained Catholic clergy is the Only way through which sins of men are remitted in order to enter the NEW CONVENANT( Christ's Body and Blood/ Eucharist* / Marriage Supper of the LAMB.
Respectfully, Bishop, I am a cradle Catholic and I was one of those terrified children. I felt relief coming out of the confessional, but only relief being out of that little space with that disembodied voice. Ever since you began your catholicism series and RUclips ministry, I have felt a renewed perspective, one of Confession as a source of healing and affirmation. I don’t understand what I’m hearing from you now…” it should be humiliating”? “ don’t make it too easy.”? I don’t know why you’ve changed your view, but it certainly doesn’t encourage one.
It shouldn't be made to be difficult or humiliating, but we should be contrite. _The Catechism of the Catholic Church_ (paragraph 1451) states the following: _Among the penitent's acts contrition occupies first place. Contrition is "sorrow of the soul and detestation of the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again."_ The quotation within the paragraph is drawn from the _Roman Catechism_ of Trent. During the early days of the Church confession and penance were public. Irish missionaries during the seventh century, inspired by the practice of the Desert Fathers, introduced the practice of private confession and penance, which with the seal of the confessional instituted a fitting mercy. The point the fathers are making is not that we should be brought low but that, when we are reluctant and unhappy it is appropriate, and we should confess anyway, because in doing so we hope to grow in sanctity.
Would it help to reconceptualize the idea of 'humiliation' (in this context) as 'humble-iation'? The words 'humble' and 'humiliation' both come from the same latin root, meaning 'ground'. And where the modern connotation might be slightly different, I think what the good Bishop means is that it's better to feel proper contrition for our sin, than to feel nothing about it and approach confession with a flippant attitude. (I imagine it's a similar thing about how it makes sense that Confession isn't easy; like, we're engaged with our hearts and processing a really deep phenomenon here: the reality of sin, contrition, repentance, forgiveness. Like most authentic experiences, it's got a 'thick' quality to it, not a 'thin', shallow, or easy quality. It's not only touching us at the surface; it's change at the heart level.) And honestly for me (as an adult convert who had built up lifetime habits of sin hard to break), I've found even the less pleasant 'humiliation' aspect helpful, exactly because I DON'T like the feeling of humiliation, haha. Insofar as I'd rather not have to tell another person I did something bad, the obligation of Confession is actually helpful incentive to stop doing bad things. Not that a priest has ever _humiliated me_ in the confessional -- they've all been very kind and practical. But you know how it is; in our own minds we feel shame at imagining someone might not see us quite so rosily anymore; very concerned with our own reputations, pride gets involved, and pride is easily humiliated. (Remember that Jesus said that those who sit lowest at the table may be brought higher, but someone who presumes to sit near the head of the table may be moved lower.) But then after Reconciliation of course, we remember and experience how God loves us exactly in the middle of our sinfulness; loves us there so much that He came into it to forgive us, heal us, and lead us out of it. The point of Confession definitely isn't to experience humiliation if by this we mean shame instead of humility, but it's psychologically understandable for a sense of pride brought low (i.e. a humbling process, what one might call a 'humiliating' process) to occur inside us as we make our way to Confession. To admitting how low we dropped. Again, not for the purpose of dwelling down low, but exactly because from that honest place where the humble man sits, God loves to lift us high again.
When I was a kid confession was hard, I felt relief and would cry afterwards... Today I feel almost nothing when confessing, I struggle to find peace afterwards and the relief that used to come with it, is there any advice for me?
I am Catholic. I was sadly disappointed when I went to confession after a few years of not going. I was trying to get closer to the church, but I was told I couldn't receive communion because my husband and I were not married in the church. We have been married for 30 years, and I have lived a decent life and brought my children to church. But I was denied receiving the body of Christ just for that reason. I don't think I should have to divorce my husband to be good with the church because he doesn't want to get married in the church. Am I wrong?

This is probably something I should look up ina "how to do a confession" but I will ask here. Does a confession ever amount to a discussion with the confessor and even face to face? Is this what is done when you go to a regular confessor where there is a mutual acquaintanceship. .
Face to face is up to the penitent. The person will go in, tell their mortal sins that they have committed since their last confession of the priest has a question he will ask. The priest will give advice, scripture absolve the sin… give penance (more for the heart)

Going to confession is never easy!! You don’t have to make it harder. I believe Pope Francis exhorted priests to not make confession something like a severe punishment. It’s hard enough to get people to go!!
What do you do if the priest at my church let it be known he doesn't like confession and keep it around 2 minutes. I don't feel good after confession. I feel worse.
Whatever happened to Barron's 2009 RUclips video agreeing with theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar saying that we have a "reasonable hope all men are saved?" Never could figure out Barron's semantic defense of that assertion? If that were true, why would we need confession at all?
In an interview with Ben Shapiro when asked if Jesus is the only way to salvation, Barron told him that "It is the preferred way." Really? So there are other ways to salvation? Barron also said that "We have good hope that everyone goes to Heaven." Well, not according to Jesus. What about that "narrow gate?"
Something continues to bother me. While we are taught that God forgives our sins through the sacrament of Confession, we are also to believe that we still must atone for those sins in Purgatory - so have we truly been forgiven? If that premise is accurate then why do we go to confession?
IMO, Despite our repentance, the evil we brought in caused damage and whilst we stop it, we need to repair it, same like when a wall is hit and there's a hole on it. Same like when our Lord was nailed to the cross, he forgave but it doesn't mean it didn't hurt. Our sins have consequences in our physical reality as well in our spiritual one.
Your sins are truly forgiven when you make a good confession. Unfortunately like in the Bible and as you've experienced in real life: Sin has consequences. People youve wronged may still hate you. There is the guilt you feel. And many others. And those consequences don't always just dissappear after you've repented. The Church tries to alleviate some of those consequences via indulgences. If you die without mortal sin but while still 'paying' for the consequences of the sins you committed, Purgatory is a way God uses to fully remit them so that you can enter Heaven. It doesn't purify sins, it purifies you from their consequences.
Yes, when we give a good confession and confess ALL our sins with a FIRM resolve to amend our lives and sin no more, we receive the sanctifying grace to be in God's friendship again. However there is the temporal punishment that all sin has attached to it. Just like a young kid playing baseball, hits the ball and the ball goes threw his neighbors window. The neighbor can forgive the boy for the act of breaking the window, however still expect the boy to pay for the window to be replaced.
The view of purgatory as a punishment is likely the hang-up here. Look at purgatory differently, like your soul is a cast iron pan. Jesus cleaned it and put oil on it, so you could eat off of it, it’s clean, but it’s better to season the pan in the oven for a short time after cleaning. That’s a stupid analogy I know but it’s all I can come up with rn
Think of it this way. You and your friends play ball next to your neighbors house, you throw the ball knowing it's wrong because it will likely hit their window but you do it anyway and their window breaks. You are really sorry and apologize to your neighbor who forgives you and says don't play there again. But there is still the broken window. You are forgiven but there is still an atonement for your misdeed, which is replacing the glass. While we must atone for our sins in Purgatory, each year Divine Mercy Sunday is a chance to have that punishment removed.

Humiliation must not be confused with humility. I cannot feel that humiliation is ok. Jesus often said to people take courage your sins are forgiven; and yet they had not said a word. The prodigal son says “I have sinned…” but there he is stopped by his father who is only interested in his return. Without repentance all my confessing of sins is a waste of time, no matter how thorough I am. Emphasise repentance not humiliation.
I don't understand, why would you confess your sins to another human being, when he the priest, most likely has also committed a sin? Surely it is only proper and right to pray to God alone - our creator.

This was informative. I was born and raised Catholic, but had an awakening in college. I learned about the western religious traditions and their origins, and I realized what a farce it all was. I’ve been a happy atheist for 30 years and I’ve raised my kids the same way.

I do understand the feeling though, but really I think the priests are proud of everyone who does appear , because they know it’s hard! We are saved through Him, but what did He say? “Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven; whose sins you shall retain, are retained.” (John 20:23) Not "pick up a book and cry and your sins are forgiven." Not "Say My name and your sins are forgiven." Not "Post in the comments section of every Catholic video to argue and your sins are forgiven." No. "Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects." (James 5:16) So yes, confession of sin is necessary, and to go to those whom God has given the ability to absolve would be the most prudent. I do not believe in the Catholic practice of confession. Most Catholics in this age do not go to confession. I find it interesting and puzzling that some people greatly value the practice.
Whenever I go to confession, there is always a line of people waiting to go to confession. Even longer during Advent and Lent. I’d have to say that more Catholics attend confession these days then decades past.

I LOVEEE the sacrifice of the Mass and its beauty and that we can celebrate and receive Jesus literally every day except Good Friday throughout the year but there’s something about Reconciliation! I thought through RCIA id dread going but I love it! I love it every single time! It never gets old. It gets maybe scary or even like he said humiliating or whatever, but it’s so incredibly transformative and powerful. Whether it’s just about the humanness of confessing wrongs in our lives but I know something beyond a shadow of a doubt spiritual is happening in that Sacrament. Having been away from the church for over 25 years for personal reasons but wanting to come back and didn’t know how, God opened the way for me at the hospital as I was waiting for my husband to come back from surgery. I saw the priest whom I had chatted with a bit about my life and suddenly I found myself asking him if I could go to confession sometime. He answered “How about now”. I had even forgotten how to start. He led me step by step then gave me absolution. It was undoubtedly the happiest moment of my life. Tears of joy still come to my eyes recalling it. ❤Thank you priests for always being available. We need you.

As a almost 67 year old cradle Catholic who has gone to confession numerous times, it has never crossed my mind that the priest might be nervous or feeling uncomfortable because he doesn’t know what I will be confessing. I have been very blessed especially these past several years with a variety of priests who have heard my confessions. The sacramental graces that flow through them, as vessels of mercy, are profound indeed.

This is the third time I'm trying to relate my confession experience. I was plagued by two sins for years. I confessed them regularly. Through the grace of God and many priests I have been freed of these two serious sins. I've got more to go but that liberation is God's gift of grace.

Seriously and generously. I’ve, unfortunately, had two disgusting confessors. One wanted to get out of the confessional five minutes yet to go who told me that he was only going to give me one sin and one sin only. This led me instantaneously to screech to a halt. It bamboozled me and he had to go through a list of sins until I found one to confess. I left the confessional wondering if I had made a good (or maybe real) confession. Many years later, I went to confession in my new parish. I had only just begun, about 20 seconds, when the priest interrupted saying: “Now for your penance say…” I said: “I haven’t finished, Father”. He then showed some irritability. Some months later, he did exactly the same. This time he was shocking, telling me to “hurry up”. I then found I couldn’t get my words out as I’d become perplexed. He then shouted at me: “Look, you’ve even written them down!” Not only did I never go back to him (and thankfully he has been moved) but it has made me nervous, hoping I’ll not get something like that again. He obviously doesn’t respect the Sacrament.
Confession is one of the most beautiful things about Christianity. When I started going more regularly, my life really improved. it is an uncomprehensible grace and just shows how God loves to forgive!
Excellent. When the Bishop talked about the relief when confession is ended I don’t get that elation. Instead I’m humbled!

Every time I have heard this "what if I wake up dead on Christmas" as the primary focus of Advent study, my brain says, "remember the Serenity Prayer," and my heart follows immediately after. Ignatius of Loyola was the Patron for Sister Ignatia, who worked with Bob and Bill as the 3 of them formed AA and the 12 steps for addictions and Al-Anon. My biggest fear, right now is that if God grants a banquet in Heaven, please don't sit me too close to the desserts. Thank you Bishop Barron and Fr. Mike.

@AscensionPresents I don't know how I can afford it, Father Mike. I pay my phone bill, so RUclips and my subscription to various accounts comes with that. I even stopped doing story telling tick-tock videos and dropped myself to a slower phone instead of having those posts as a hobby and community service for homeless shelter people. I just got offered a job internally at our local airport terminal, but I don't know when I start, and it's only part time, because I don't have the financial stability to be dropped from SSDI. Eventually I hope that I will be able to be at my new job full time, so that I can participate in the company 401K and be offered internal health insurance, as well. I still have to go through the badging process. (I got my fingerprints done and all the preliminary background checks plus the background checks from when I operated a shuttle in the parking lot, so that helps) Next week, I get to do the training modules and learn more about the specific details of what my job will entail. I still get to keep working on my CDL certification credentials and building toward a permanent job operating small busses as my work experience and I still get to work on adding some more education as I begin this new job. Just listening to these little snippets and the various podcasts that get uploaded are enough. The speakers and interviews do support my personal growth and my spiritual life. They provide me solid ground for my prayer life and I am very grateful and thankful for Ascension Presents and Word on Fire. The diocese that I belong to subscribes to both of these ministries on behalf of their Catholic population as well as providing their own social media because a number of the seminary students who become interested in helping others and providing Mass do end up going to Duluth and St. Paul and Mundeleine or way out to PA, and beyond. The minor seminary students go to undergraduate school in the "middle of nowhere" SD. (That was said by a seminary student who came to Sioux Falls to the Banquet Downtown to serve a meal with his classmates. It made me laugh, because the seminary really is in the country.) Confession is such a beautiful and wonderfully freeing gift. If you are afraid or scared of going to Confession, please ask Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Joseph to give you the courage and the strength to go! Also, it can be helpful to talk to a good priest, friends, and/or family members who are more familiar with this process to help you in going. Hopefully, this will give you the tools you need to make a good examination of conscience and knock your Confession out of the ball park, in a good way!
Thank you for this conversation. I confess the same sins repeatedly and I’ve wondered what the priest thinks about this. This does not make it easier to go to confession but I KNOW WHEN I leave the confessional I’m unburdened by the guilt I carry around.

I've had 2 experiences with Priests having a temper tantrum at me in the Confessional... these experiences have been a very detrimental effect on my life with Confession and with the Church; praise God that He has influenced me to stay in the Church and realize how many things I have to be thankful for.

I’m sorry that you’ve had those experiences but glad to know that these experiences haven’t led you astray. If we can remember that our priests are imperfect beings just like us and our focus is on Jesus always, then we’ll be fine and able to forgive/see past their behavior.

When I go to confession I always feel like I probably forgot something from the past and I never feel like the slate is wiped clean. I confessed everything I could remember from my past and now I can't come up with anything to confess and I'm not saying I'm perfect. I wish I could find one of those Priest who can tell you your sins and then I would feel like the slate is wiped clean.
Have you ever shared this feeling with your confessor or counsellor? I think he would give you an advice how to deal with it. I had a similar problem and I once asked my confessor about it and he helped me a lot. I only regret that I didn't shared this with him sooner.
God cares more about your heart than the technicality of confessing. The important part is you don’t hold anything back and confess what you remember. I always conclude with a “I am sorry for these and all my sins.” As long as you aren’t deliberately withholding a sin, all of your sins are forgiven. You don’t even have to confess venial sins. This is basic Catholic teaching. No need to worry about forgetting. If you ever remember something after the fact, you can always bring it up your next confession.
Fear not - we’ve all felt like this…I tried an all-life confession and it worked! My intelligent confessor got the message and told me not to worry about what you can do nothing about!

My biggest difficulty with confession is sitting face-to-face with a priest who knows me very well. I volunteer for many church activities/ministries, so I'm known by our parish priest. I fear losing those positions within the church because of my sins. It is said that priests do not remember the sins of those confessing them, but they are human, and it's only natural to be shocked by the sins of a person who should not be committing them. The old "behind the screen" method is not available in our church. If it were, I would be less hesitant to confess my sins.
The funny thing is, a lot of people have heart attacks and strokes during the holidays. You could very well wake up on Christmas dead. I lost my uncle on Christmas day.

Confession, I mean by the authority of an ordained Catholic clergy is the Only way through which sins of men are remitted in order to enter the NEW CONVENANT( Christ's Body and Blood/ Eucharist* / Marriage Supper of the LAMB.
Respectfully, Bishop, I am a cradle Catholic and I was one of those terrified children. I felt relief coming out of the confessional, but only relief being out of that little space with that disembodied voice. Ever since you began your catholicism series and RUclips ministry, I have felt a renewed perspective, one of Confession as a source of healing and affirmation. I don’t understand what I’m hearing from you now…” it should be humiliating”? “ don’t make it too easy.”? I don’t know why you’ve changed your view, but it certainly doesn’t encourage one.
It shouldn't be made to be difficult or humiliating, but we should be contrite. _The Catechism of the Catholic Church_ (paragraph 1451) states the following:
_Among the penitent's acts contrition occupies first place. Contrition is "sorrow of the soul and detestation of the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again."_
The quotation within the paragraph is drawn from the _Roman Catechism_ of Trent.
During the early days of the Church confession and penance were public. Irish missionaries during the seventh century, inspired by the practice of the Desert Fathers, introduced the practice of private confession and penance, which with the seal of the confessional instituted a fitting mercy.
The point the fathers are making is not that we should be brought low but that, when we are reluctant and unhappy it is appropriate, and we should confess anyway, because in doing so we hope to grow in sanctity.
Would it help to reconceptualize the idea of 'humiliation' (in this context) as 'humble-iation'? The words 'humble' and 'humiliation' both come from the same latin root, meaning 'ground'. And where the modern connotation might be slightly different, I think what the good Bishop means is that it's better to feel proper contrition for our sin, than to feel nothing about it and approach confession with a flippant attitude. (I imagine it's a similar thing about how it makes sense that Confession isn't easy; like, we're engaged with our hearts and processing a really deep phenomenon here: the reality of sin, contrition, repentance, forgiveness. Like most authentic experiences, it's got a 'thick' quality to it, not a 'thin', shallow, or easy quality. It's not only touching us at the surface; it's change at the heart level.)
And honestly for me (as an adult convert who had built up lifetime habits of sin hard to break), I've found even the less pleasant 'humiliation' aspect helpful, exactly because I DON'T like the feeling of humiliation, haha. Insofar as I'd rather not have to tell another person I did something bad, the obligation of Confession is actually helpful incentive to stop doing bad things. Not that a priest has ever _humiliated me_ in the confessional -- they've all been very kind and practical. But you know how it is; in our own minds we feel shame at imagining someone might not see us quite so rosily anymore; very concerned with our own reputations, pride gets involved, and pride is easily humiliated. (Remember that Jesus said that those who sit lowest at the table may be brought higher, but someone who presumes to sit near the head of the table may be moved lower.) But then after Reconciliation of course, we remember and experience how God loves us exactly in the middle of our sinfulness; loves us there so much that He came into it to forgive us, heal us, and lead us out of it. The point of Confession definitely isn't to experience humiliation if by this we mean shame instead of humility, but it's psychologically understandable for a sense of pride brought low (i.e. a humbling process, what one might call a 'humiliating' process) to occur inside us as we make our way to Confession. To admitting how low we dropped. Again, not for the purpose of dwelling down low, but exactly because from that honest place where the humble man sits, God loves to lift us high again.
When I was a kid confession was hard, I felt relief and would cry afterwards... Today I feel almost nothing when confessing, I struggle to find peace afterwards and the relief that used to come with it, is there any advice for me?

I am Catholic. I was sadly disappointed when I went to confession after a few years of not going. I was trying to get closer to the church, but I was told I couldn't receive communion because my husband and I were not married in the church. We have been married for 30 years, and I have lived a decent life and brought my children to church. But I was denied receiving the body of Christ just for that reason.
I don't think I should have to divorce my husband to be good with the church because he doesn't want to get married in the church.

Does a confession ever amount to a discussion with the confessor and even face to face? Is this what is done when you go to a regular confessor where there is a mutual acquaintanceship. .
Face to face is up to the penitent. The person will go in, tell their mortal sins that they have committed since their last confession of the priest has a question he will ask. The priest will give advice, scripture absolve the sin… give penance (more for the heart)

Whatever happened to Barron's 2009 RUclips video agreeing with theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar saying that we have a "reasonable hope all men are saved?" Never could figure out Barron's semantic defense of that assertion? If that were true, why would we need confession at all?
In an interview with Ben Shapiro when asked if Jesus is the only way to salvation, Barron told him that "It is the preferred way." Really? So there are other ways to salvation? Barron also said that "We have good hope that everyone goes to Heaven." Well, not according to Jesus. What about that "narrow gate?"

Something continues to bother me. While we are taught that God forgives our sins through the sacrament of Confession, we are also to believe that we still must atone for those sins in Purgatory - so have we truly been forgiven? If that premise is accurate then why do we go to confession?
IMO, Despite our repentance, the evil we brought in caused damage and whilst we stop it, we need to repair it, same like when a wall is hit and there's a hole on it. Same like when our Lord was nailed to the cross, he forgave but it doesn't mean it didn't hurt. Our sins have consequences in our physical reality as well in our spiritual one.
Your sins are truly forgiven when you make a good confession. Unfortunately like in the Bible and as you've experienced in real life: Sin has consequences. People youve wronged may still hate you. There is the guilt you feel. And many others. And those consequences don't always just dissappear after you've repented. The Church tries to alleviate some of those consequences via indulgences. If you die without mortal sin but while still 'paying' for the consequences of the sins you committed, Purgatory is a way God uses to fully remit them so that you can enter Heaven. It doesn't purify sins, it purifies you from their consequences.
Yes, when we give a good confession and confess ALL our sins with a FIRM resolve to amend our lives and sin no more, we receive the sanctifying grace to be in God's friendship again. However there is the temporal punishment that all sin has attached to it. Just like a young kid playing baseball, hits the ball and the ball goes threw his neighbors window. The neighbor can forgive the boy for the act of breaking the window, however still expect the boy to pay for the window to be replaced.
The view of purgatory as a punishment is likely the hang-up here. Look at purgatory differently, like your soul is a cast iron pan. Jesus cleaned it and put oil on it, so you could eat off of it, it’s clean, but it’s better to season the pan in the oven for a short time after cleaning. That’s a stupid analogy I know but it’s all I can come up with rn
Think of it this way. You and your friends play ball next to your neighbors house, you throw the ball knowing it's wrong because it will likely hit their window but you do it anyway and their window breaks. You are really sorry and apologize to your neighbor who forgives you and says don't play there again. But there is still the broken window. You are forgiven but there is still an atonement for your misdeed, which is replacing the glass. While we must atone for our sins in Purgatory, each year Divine Mercy Sunday is a chance to have that punishment removed.

Humiliation must not be confused with humility. I cannot feel that humiliation is ok. Jesus often said to people take courage your sins are forgiven; and yet they had not said a word. The prodigal son says “I have sinned…” but there he is stopped by his father who is only interested in his return. Without repentance all my confessing of sins is a waste of time, no matter how thorough I am. Emphasise repentance not humiliation.
I don't understand, why would you confess your sins to another human being, when he the priest, most likely has also committed a sin? Surely it is only proper and right to pray to God alone - our creator.
Huh... makes me think of something. Is this why priests don't wear their priest clothes when outside of church? So they don't have to take any stranger's confession or whatever?

This was informative. I was born and raised Catholic, but had an awakening in college. I learned about the western religious traditions and their origins, and I realized what a farce it all was. I’ve been a happy atheist for 30 years and I’ve raised my kids the same way.

The priests have heard it all, they’re not there to condemn, fear not! I do understand the feeling though, but really I think the priests are proud of everyone who does appear , because they know it’s hard! So don’t be embarrassed, realize you’re doing a hard thing and it makes you brave and humble. And God always hears, don’t give up on Him! He hasn’t given up on you

But if you were actually the Bible believer you cosplay as, you'd know that when it comes to salvation, it's not one and done. As Paul says our salvation is a continuous process, worked out with fear and trembling. So a genuine Bible believer, which is of course a Catholic, believes that they have been saved (Ephesians 2:5, 8), are being saved (1 Corinthians 3:15, 5:5) (Romans 13:11), and hope to be saved (Philippians 2:12).

Confessing to a, so called, Priest is sin for both persons involved, it eliminates the one and only Father, Son and Holy Spirit from the Process. Matthew 23:9: "And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven"

I do not believe in the Catholic practice of confession. Most Catholics in this age do not go to confession. I find it interesting and puzzling that some people greatly value the practice.
Whenever I go to confession, there is always a line of people waiting to go to confession. Even longer during Advent and Lent. I’d have to say that more Catholics attend confession these days then decades past.
@@paulapareja3089The statistics on the use of confession compared to the 1950s and 1960s is way down. I don't recall the actual percent of Catholics that currently go but it is low.
