the original store is still here in Älmhult, but turned into a museum a number of years ago, when a new more modern store in Älmhult replaced it

My parents told me that in the 1950s they visited IKEA in Älmhult (the first department store) where they were invited to stay for free at their hotel and the department store had its own salesperson who went around only with my parents - they thought IKEA had excellent customer service and felt very privileged.

The world's first IKEA department store was open for over 50 years before it closed in 2012 and a new store opened at a different location in Älmhult. I visited the first department store throughout my childhood and I have also worked there. The building is now used as an IKEA museum.

I was happy to grow up close to one of the original stores, the circular one in the old photos outside of Stockholm.
My childhood furniture were all from that store.
Nowadays all bigger cities in Sweden have an IKEA. But the circular one in Skärholmen is still my favourite.
As a Swede this is incredibly interesting to watch. I have seen this story several times before, but as you say, the editing here is great and oh man I love your reactions and ideas.

But in the video they saw “Swedish cent” which would be the equivalent to “öre”
So it would be the same thing as saying “Amerikanska motsvarigheten till öre” which would make sense as well.

@@bengtolsson5436 I believe that cent in actuality means 1/100th. Just like a quarter can both be a name for a coin and a descriptor of a fraction of a main currency.
That being said, in a video about Sweden I don't think it would be that much work to use the proper name for it.

The first Ikea outside Sweden was in Norway outside Oslo.

Funnily for most of my life and i lived up in the far north of Sweden the closest IKEA shop was honestly too far away for most people to go visit one of their shops. People would still arrange bus tours to travel to the closest one which was 650km one way trips. just a few years before i moved south they finally opened an IKEA shop on the border to Finland.

We had a couple, but those parties had no influence. Even the party on the left wing after a change of party leader became more and more Nazi.
At least here in Sweden, IKEA has a few shortcuts, so you don't have to go through everything. There are even signs pointing at them.
I’ve never gotten lost at an Ikea, and normally just by what I intended to by during my quick trips there. Since I know exactly where every shortcut is, my visits are very efficient unless I want to stroll and look around.. I hate the stores that have 2 floors cause they’re harder to efficiently move through. We have a store in Sweden that sells nicknacks, bathroom supplies and such, called Normal and I avoid that store cause there’s no shortcut and you have to move through the whole store (usually at a snail’s pace) even if what you want is just before the tills…
A diagnosis is not the main thing. It can help in some way. My youngest was diagnosed with Aspergers, nowadays ASD and for my son type 1, without an intellektuell disorder.
However he needed guidance in social behaviour throughout his schoolyears. Fortunately he got it thanks to the Swedish school system, with a lot of help from his mom being so persistent. Nowadays he holds an ordinary, as in a real job and he is doing just fine.
The Ikea in southern Stockholm is a circular building. So instead of going left and right. You go round and round in the same direction. So the result is that you lose your entire sense of direction and it can make you feel really uncomfortable and confused. I prefer the one north of town which is the Ikea prototype to all the foreign ones. They have shortcuts in them.

Ingvar was a business genius. And yes the original store is still there, been there many times. The first IKEA outside Sweden was in Norway.
My first job was at the first departement store. So its not long ago it has been converted to a museum😊.
Follow the arrows on the floor. In Malmö we also have shortcuts in the store and if you know t´what you need at IKEA you only buy that nothing else

I don't know about Ikea stores in the UK, but here in Sweden they've opened up the stores and made it easier to get to/from the different departments. You no longer have to walk through the entire store to get from entrance to exit.
I don't know anyone who has been to the original store, but I know it still exists. I live in Gothenburg, and we have four stores here. Two proper stores where you can buy physical objects, and two smaller with diplays where you can get inspired and order online, but not bring anything home.
About the Swedish nazi perty. Several other European countries had nazi parties before and during WWII. Even the UK had one.
Try making to-do lists to organize things. Thy don't have to be super structured. Just write down things as you think of them, and then cross them off as you complete them. You don't have to do them in order, but it can be nice to have a list to see what you need to do and what you have already done. It has helped me a lot.
Most shops today are just like that, you gonna have to walk around the entire shop to get out, they do it for just that reason, they want you to buy more than you came there for, if you go there for a chair you gonna come home with a table 😂 with that being said IKEA is a great store, name 1 person that don't have anything from IKEA in their home.
I'm not surprised that there was a Swedish nazi party. While Sweden did remain neutral during World War 2, there was a reason Hitler didn't prioritise taking over Sweden. Sweden was (and is) predominantly "Aryan" (and what with the nazi "racial purity" nonsense that mattered), and quite... Cooperative. There was certainly resistance to the nazis too, but... Yeah. Hermann Göring lived in Stockholm for years and married a Swedish woman, for example. There was also quite a bit of eugenics "research" (for lack of a better word) going on in Sweden at the time.

Yes, there was a Swedish nazi Party. Big parts of Sweden were very sympathetic to the Nazis. We even had a bunch join the German foreign volunteers. Not as many as volunteered to help Finland, but still.
There are stories in my family of my grandfather fighting Nazis in the street as a young man. Several years later an adversary told him after the war that he had been put on an execution list for when the Nazis came to Sweden.

Of course there were Nazi/fascist parties, not only in Sweden, but in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Hungary and so on. Not only in Germany, Spain and Italy.
In Norway, for example, there was "Nasjonal Samling" (≈national coalition), whose leader's surname "Quisling" came to be synonymous with traitor, not only in Norwegian but in many other languages as well (I think in English, for example).
One off original buildings is still there, well the round main building that you saw in the picture they have a newer building connected to it and it is in the Stockholm suburb, Kungenskurav / Skärholmen and it still a ikea

Historically, Sweden has taken a lot of cultural influence from Germany, and ur countries have had pretty close ties for hundreds of years. Our nobility and theirs intermarried frequently too, so in the end a lot of the rich and powerful had relatives in Germany.
When WW2 erupted, many Swedes were pro-German and they saw the Nazi party as a powerful political entity that it might pay to be aligned with. The rich and powerful in Sweden still had friends in Germany and the Nazi party, even the Swedish royalty.
Hermann Göring (top Nazi) married a Swedish woman and loved the country.
At the start of WW2, it was no different to any other war (at least on the surface) so it was not controversial to be pro-German at the time.
There was a Swedish Nazi party, but it never grew that big, and by the end of the war and all the atrocities of the Nazis were uncovered, most of the symphatisers went away.
You bring up a lot of good points/facts. It was controversial though in some circles to be pro-Germany after the Kristallnacht in 1938. Many people were not aware of the nazis agenda and didnt have knowledge about a lot of things that took place there, but some were.

Its also important to remember that there were Nazi-parties all over Europe (and also outside of Europe at this time), inspired by the german nazi-movement.

i have never been in an ikea outside of sweden but I don't get the whole "its impossible to get out" thing... there are literally arows on the floor, signs, and maps everywhere that tell you where to go. how do you get lost??

Dwayne, you should get yourself tested at least for ADHD, if you are curious of what you might have. It helped me to understand myself, and not to be so hard on myself when I fail at things "neurotypical" people find easy. I got diagnosed as an adult, and it took that long before anyone noticed because I am a very neat person, and apparently that can develop as a counterweight to the CHAOS that ADHD can bring. I probably spend more time organizing that "normal" people, but I know why, so it is ok for me. Instead, I tend to get pissy when other people are disorganized - as this messes up how *I* operate, if that makes sense.
Having a neurodivergency IS a handicap in many ways in modern society, especially with things like angst, but scientists have begun to think that maybe the reason individuals are still born with these types of "handicaps" means that we serve a purpose in human society. Having such a "handicap" does not make you dumb, it just means your brain is wired differently to the typical person.
A person with ADHD is usually good at noticing changes and spot things others might not, because our attention span is shorter, which is thought to have been particularly useful when our ancestors foraged in the woods - to find that elusive fruit or to spot a predator early.
As a kid, I often came home with my pockets lined with interresting stuff I found when walking around, nothing particulary interesting, but stuff kids find cool. Could be out with other kids and I was usually the one the spotted stuff before the others.
There are more things to it ofc, but that was just at the top of my head.
There is no such thing as an innocent successful company. And there is no such thing as an innocent human being. To get to the top there will always be foul play involved. Every founder will have something in their past that gets brought to light. Start of the video it was almost like he wanted make IKEA the only bad guy. It's not.
There still are few extreme right parties in Sweden, none with enough votes to fit in the parliament, of course... But they exist. :P

Third, There is shortcuts in the stores to get out more quickly. There are signs all over the place saying "Shortcut". At least in Sweden.
The Nazi reference stinks like clickbait, the founder of IKEA was only 17 when he started in 1943 - in neutral Sweden. Who knows, perhaps he was smitten by the Nazi ideology as a youth, entire NATIONS were! By most accounts, he was a humble man in later life that drove around in his old Volvo Amazon which served him well, no need to splurge on new when the old was running just fine. Seeing how most IKEA products are made in low-pay countries, there must have been some exploitation along the way, but also a lot of new jobs and new skill creation in poor countries. Two sides to every story.

to the mater of your question; well yes me, have been to the “first” ikea store. got to the “original” ikea store and also the largest in the world now.. it’s in “Kungens kurva”, in Stockholm // im 16, but ofc I’ve got to ikea stores meny times.. who haven’t. Anyway that is the nearest to my home so we always go there.. and that round house is still in use.. (btw) some year ago it also got renovated( a face lift 😝🤌)
