- My search to find all of British Columbia's Gemstones has taken me to Vancouver Island in search of one of our more famous Gemstones only found here in BC Canada. Dallasite! This is a semi Precious gemstone used in lapidary work to make jewelry, display items and sculptures. Vancouver Island is a rock hounds dream for rock collecting as it has many great gemstones, from rhodonite, to flower stone and of course Dallasite.

When I first started rock hounding I was living in the Okanogan very close to where you are Dan, and you helped me understand what to look for and how to look. It all started with me watching one of your Goldpan videos, that was two years ago and I’m still hooked on all your videos

My dad and I do alot of river and creek hunting. We've found that you can splash water on the gravel bars and it makes everything jump out. Aswell as a little pressurized sprayer.

I gave a like before the vid started and I shared it...I have been a rockhound all my life..to me nothing better then being in a creek.. I forget the hard times of life ...and relax and enjoy my time in a little creek..and others spend money to relax ...I just need a creek and I am a happy gal..I have even walked bare foot across a creek in the winter to get a rock...yep I am that kind of rockhound..

Dallasite is everywhere on Vancouver Island Beaches, Start with Dallas Road in Victoria. The person who named it a long time ago. French Beach area too. Really great area for everything actually. Jordan Beach is amazing too. Easy to get to also. Check them out in the Off Season. Dont go in Summer. High tide and storms turn the rocks over and give you a lot of new stuff to look at.

Pretty neat looking stone there. The Wikipedia article on it doesn’t really explain the process, but it’s original makeup does explain the end result. When the pillow basalts erupted, the sudden shock of molten rock against freezing cold ocean water makes the material spall off in tiny fragments of glassy basalt, and these accumulate in between the larger blocks of ‘normal’ basalt. The volcanic glass is a metastable material, and in the presence of seawater and heat it can slowly recrystallize into the chlorite, epidot, etc.
Given that origin story, one might be able to find the stuff in other submarine volcanic belts like the one wrapped around the core of the Olympics in Washington, or along the Oregon coast. Definitely a pretty nice end result!

I call it Gorddalisite. The blue stuff, I'm sure has picked up some copper, and is localized.

Grandma would take us 'rock-hounding' around the Olympic Peninsula, in Washington State.
Lots of volcanism, so lots of pretty rocks!
Mostly, she was after geodes and agates.
Agate Beach is what the name suggests; a beach littered with agate!
Sure, it has been picked over for years, but every spring new stones come tumbling down the hills!
Since so much of the land out there is State and National Parks, there hasn't been a lot of commercial exploitation, and rock-hounding in the Parks is discouraged.
But everything runs downhill to the public beaches during Spring rains.
The Cascades, which run up into Canada, have lots of quartz and pyrites, but not much gold.
We even have anthracite mines!
Towns with names like Black Diamond and Newcastle...most mining done today is through the efforts of several Museums.
Flood-basalt in Eastern Washington, several miles deep.
Can't go 2 miles in any direction and not get a reminder of the three subduction zones that converge under Seattle!
We even have a Lahar Surfing Team....
Sure, there won't be much left after 'The Big One', but we survived the quake of 1700!
This post made me smile! I hope that my 2 girls will grow up to be rockhounds. I trained them on the same WA state beaches, from the Elwha River mouth down to Gray's Harbor (home of those sweet DP carnelians)! Even my 3 yo has found a few nice aggies.
I was surprised to learn recently that you can even find agates on Seattle beaches! I have a bowl full of lovely agates found at/near Alki to prove it! We are pretty lucky to live in such a rad place. ❤PNW

Just listening to how you found the mineralization from the old reports, That's how I found the amethyst in Newfoundland covered in the Rock & Gem magazine June issue... it just happened to be the 1868 Geological Survey of Newfoundland, and it was pretty much forgotten about until a few years ago.

So l watched Dan"s vid as l so often do and it got me to thinking l should take a drive. 6 hrs later back home with a nice pile of Dallasite rocks lol. No saw, but perhaps l can find someone locally who has one. So thanks Dan for the inspiration and another great vid...keep em coming, pardner.

Nice looking stone! The problem for making jewelry out of it is ya need to make bigger pieces out of it to see the design of the different colors! Now as a big polished specimen piece it's amazing!
