Here in Algeria this Prado is an excellent comfortable reliable and real offroader.
The last Mohican... Thanks for this special Prado vid.
Of course if you want to go and come back.
One of my favorite cars of all time. Such a beast and the most reliable vehicle ever, I want to buy one of these one day and keep it literally until I die lol.
I own a 2012 GX and it is a reliable and comfortable SUV. I really hope that Lexus doesn't kill it off.
They won't. The GX is a popular platform, slowed down primarily by its lagging technology suite. 2023 is when they plan to release the next generation, if the report they put out a few months ago is anything to go by. Odds are that'll be when we see it shoot back ahead of its Toyota counterpart.
Dr. TeaRex hopefully they don’t decide to put a turbo V6 in it!
@@thirstypilgrim97 That much is practically guaranteed. Contradicting reports state that either V8s will be exclusive to $90k+ vehicles or be phased out entirely in favour of V6s for emissions purposes. So yeah, either way, the next GX will most likely be a turbo V6. That said, this means a modernised powertrain that may very well be just as powerful and reliable as the outgoing V8s. Toyota has had a fair bit of time to research it at this point, and I don't think the result will disappoint.
Now as for the exhaust note on these new V6 vehicles...I'm thinking I may look into getting an upgraded exhaust system to give it a more satisfying rumble :P
Can't wait for the upgrade we love the prado here in South Africa
Fortuner and Prado sells well here in south Africa, with Hilux always leading the sales chart monthly. The upgrade will be welcomed. Great review as always Kirk.👊👊👏👏👏.
My parents owned a 2 door version in 2012, that thing was a beast!
@Vinny Booboo The 2 door Prado is sold everywhere but North America.
@@rightlanehog3151 Yeah we used to live in dubai, they were sold there.
@@Mahan.M The 2 door Prado with a 2.7 petrol engine, manual transmission and spare tire mounted on the tailgate is my 'sensible' dream car. BTW in South America it is called the 'Sumo'. We need a 2 door Toyota 4X4 in North America to compete with the base Wrangler and Bronco. We don't need another freakish FJ, we need a classic Prado. :)
@@rightlanehog3151Facts!
@@Mahan.M What engine did yours have?
The Prado has a much better looking front end compared to the GX.
By a mile.
I agree with you.
Yes indeed! The GX front end, running boards really affect where it can go. It’s such a shame the Lexus added the crazy low front bumper. Ugh!
Gx 1st then Prada 2nd place
@@woolengrappler the GXs made before 2020 have a higher front end and don’t have the body kit that the new ones have. Even with the running boards these are still very capable
I don’t think we see the Prado in the US because of the 4runner, not really because of the GX. Prado would attract 2nd owner GX people, not first owners (I think).
We still have room for the basic 2 door Prado which could sell at a price below the 4Runner.
Correct, most gx owners in US are soccer moms who have no idea what this vehicle is all about
My favorite machine 🔥... Since my childhood I've dreamt of it up until now, I can't wait to have one.
In Australia this is king, seems like I will buy one of these. All about off road here in Aus.
Great video Kirk, awesome to see your channel do soo well!
I've owned 2 Prado's here in Australia (10 years) .... Driven all around Australia about 14,500 kms ( 9,000 miles) honestly only 2 or 3 minor recall issues over that time... can't fault them... And a big thanks to Kirk for being a little less US centric by introducing metric measures eg KW and km/hour for all his none US followers
5th gen definitely needs to fix the rear tailgate. At the very least, switch it to open right to left, for the LHD markets. But better IMO to make it a lift gate with a power down glass, like my old 3rd gen 4Runner.
I like the rear tailgate. It’s unique and it’s never really gotten in my way. I have a Lexus GX which is the Prado in the US
GX & Prado all day!
The GX OR (Off-Road) Edition should be made official already..
You sir hit it right on the nose. You're right about the bean counters in Japan not wanting to sell the REAL Land Cruiser Prado in North America as the Americans rather pay for a Lexus GX with a cheaper aluminum V8 (which is a cheaper material when compared to Prado's Full Metal Diesel Mono block with Turbos) and simpler design. The Americans are content with just having a flash and posh interior/exterior and well why would they (Toyota) want to loose on such a good thing that they have going for them. Honestly, that was the idea behind (concept) Lexus from the beginning. Charge people more money (mostly ignorant people) who are willing to pay. Mostly Americans and Russians as Lexus does poorly in the European Market.
Hey Kirk, these power numbers coincide with the release of the updated Hilux here in Australia. it also has an upgraded towing ability to 3500kg, so the Prado should see a towing increase too. Cheers mate and keep up the great work 😎
Thanks Serge!
I think towing is staying at 3000 unfortunately. We have a 2020 vx and was hoping to upgrade to 3500kg. www.caradvice.com.au/876454/2021-toyota-landcruiser-prado-price-and-specs/
the 4Runner TRD Pro is basically our LC Prado
I wouldn't make the distinction of the "TRD Pro" -- but, yeah, 4Runner is the comparable Toyota badged vehicle.
Billy Hughes The Pro would be comparable in price to the Prado
No, is not it a totally different vehicle
@@321thachlexus gx is lc prado, 4r is based on the gx 😏
@@tinhinnh the Lexus GX shared the same platform as the LC Prado but they don’t shared the same engine. The Prado has the 2.7L,4.0L petrol and 2.8L turbo diesel while the GX only came with a 4.6L V8 petrol. The 4Runner is only for the US market it a completely different vehicle from the GX and Prado
So, with the way Lexus nomenclature works, compact is I, midsize is G, and full-size is L. S is for sedan and X is for SUV. There's the IS, GS (not anymore😢), and the LS for sedans. For BOF SUVs, there's only ever been the GX and LX, but... never an IX.
Imagine a compact, luxury, hardcore off-roader. An IX would be amazing!
As a Toyota Soarer driver I have issues with SUVs and 4WDs. I live in regional Australia so a LOT of people drive these... a LOT and down low in my little Soarer their blisteringly bright lights are right in my eyes, burning out my retinas on low beam and frying my brain on high beam and I'm a bit like "What are you compensating for you big jerk?!" But whenever I drive a V8 one, I WANT one. As for infotainment it's always just Bluetoothing my phone.
Still waiting on Toyota’s 4Runner update.........................zzzzzzzzzzz. On my 4th, still holding out on my ‘16.
Note to Toyota: A new color and cooler in the back doesn’t count :)
best looking Landcruiser 150 EVER
I watched a video from Alex on Autos about why towing capacity is on cars are so much higher in europe, and it came down to the tongue weight. Even though the towing capacities of cars in Europe were much higher than in the us, the tongue weight maximum was the same on both versions, but we require a higher percentage of the trailer weight to be a tongue weight here because we tow at higher speeds.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the towing capacity probably has little to do with the drivetrain, and everything to do with the body and rear suspension's tongue weight capacity.
Just ordered the 2021 Prado Kakadu. It's a beautiful car, don't know why people pay extra for the Lexus badge, especially here in Aus.
Prado is the best
South american beast!! 💪
El_Fif you, or this Japanese car?
I live in Japan, I am currently waiting delivery of my 2021Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TZ-G (Top trim in Japan) trim.
Its a real real suv oh my God i love it though I can't afford one thanks to Toyota company
While improved gas mileage would certainly be welcomed, wouldn't swap it for the GX's more powerful and slightly faster V8. HOWEVER, totally agree...it is upsetting to find the 2021 GX has the same infotainment system as was originally installed in 2009. Having waited for the last two years for Apple CarPlay...and each year hearing and understandably believing it would be "next year for sure" it has been frustrating. But now, with the same platform, lower cost siblings Land Cruiser Prado and 4 Runner upgraded with a new infotainment system and CarPlay it is dumbfounding. However, what is over the top insulting is to learn that the 2021 Prado (and probably all Toyotas) now have the V2 safety systems while the 2021GX still uses V1... a simple component swap....this really makes potential GX buyers feel like Toyota corporate has little regard or respect for them as this upgrade is a potential safety benefit. Very sad.
Love the Prado heaps. I’d love for Toyota to install the new 2GR FSE engine to give it a power bump of 30hp to 302 (just like the Camry). Mated to the same 6 speed torque converter as it’s tried and tested in terms of performance and reliability.
This is good news for the next GX
Usually, Toyota/Lexus launches new features/vehicles overseas, and then introduces them to the US in the next year or two
The GX is selling well, and will remain in the lineup, so a redesign seems to be in the works
There is another New Toyota Hilux Adventure will be available in a month in our region. 4 door with V6 235hp .
Petrol
Prar-doh. You’ve nailed it.
Yes I love my Prado 2018 Kakadu. Yes I live in Australia. We get the best Toyota product directly from Japan!
I love that you guys get them from the source! 🔥🔥
We get our LX, GX, Land Cruiser and 4Runner directly from Japan.
I got a 2019 vx. It needs to be updated.
Could you imagine Lexus/Toyota domination if they brought competitive vehicles to the market sooner?!
Trying to hold out for a next gen LX but the current one will do if necessary. ⌛
Great of you to cover the Prado.
Post 2009 gen, it has been disappointing in terms of comfort and mpg & almost everything. Hope this update changes the things around.
Kirk, I have an idea/suggestion for your show. Can you monitor, then display, to us, the all electric vehicle/hybrid progress between all manufacturers/makes? You can fabricate superseding comparables between the automakers whenever one or more of the manufacturers make updated progress. Maybe, you can produce an inception video of where each maker currently stands in regards to their EV and hybrid progress. You can call the segment the 'EV/Hybrid arms race', LOL. Would you consider doing superseding segments on the previously mentioned suggestion? Thanks, Kirk.👍
Thanks for the input! We'll see.
Does the 2021 update finally come with a manually selectable rear diff lock in Europe as in other markets?
Thanks, Kirk. This might be a little bit out of your wheelhouse, but you've gotta check out and seriously consider performing a segment on the Rivians R1S and R1T models, collectively. It is vastly impressive that the Rivian yields 750 horsepower at the wheels and 896 lb.ft. of torque at the wheels, respectively, out the factory door employing a maximum 410 mile range. I'm hoping that Toyota can catch up to Rivian's aforementioned astounding figures. I believe Rivian is going to make a big splash in the automotive industry. What are your thoughts on said subject?
I'm really excited for rivian! I look forward to their trucks and suvs. Toyota can catch up, but at this point...they're behind. It will probably be another 7+ years before we see a fully electric tundra.
@@KirkKreifels, sometimes I wish Toyota wasn't so lethargic/lagging in their pursuit of perfection. But, they are the most effective.
My thoughts are the European market has the new Land Rover Defender to compost with so the LandCrusier has to compete with the spec and price. How that differs from the N American market is likely due to the Ranger Rover luxury side where Toyota and Lexus seem to be trying to emulate that style range.
It’s still a utility vehicle and gets hammered in the UK with road racing and diesel fuel pricing.
However there’s a huge African and Asian off road market that’s up for grabs. Cuts the refinery out as they aren’t needed just grunt and solidly reliable build.
Is it true, that the new Prado is coming in late 2022?
Hi Kirk, I´m sure Lexus come in 2 - 3 years with completely new Cars with new Powertrains and newest Technology. Hopefully ??
Smashing the like button like crazy.. is there a redesigned GX yet?!
Bhahahah!
Dude you know the real invoice, as opposed to the bogus invoice number that they show us during purchasing.
start stop technology only makes sense in a hybrid. I see cars that stall out while coming from a light. And the owner has to restart the car.
I feel sorry for Americans
lol dont feel sorry for us. we are good.
Tbh even though the prado gets these new welcomed updates.... it's sort if too late as well, it should have came out around 2016/2017 and by now a completely new model is supposed to come out
It's still ancient and needs to be replaced asap....
Prado is the best.
Change out the "T" to an "L" on the grill and ship it here as is.
Toyota can get away with not updating because nobody buys the GX for its tech.
Yes but people in the market often walk away after seeing the outdated interior, lacking technology, and terrible gas mileage.
Has the DPF problem been fixed?
Comparing a diesel to a V8 ?
Isn't the redesign of GX coming around 2023 ? Or replacement?
Does the prado still comes with a manual stick shift?
If they did not upgrade, they probably do not believe the new tech will last 20 years... ??? I dunno... These legacy vehicles are for older people that are looking primarily for quality. aka cash cow for Toyota if they do not update much often... I would like to see removable rear seats and a 1,500 watt inverter/power generator in it along with a big screen in the dash. Rather pay for quality/durability than gimmicky features.
You are using the correct pronunciation :)
The diesels are neat with better gas mileage and other benefits but I love the current motor in the GX.. You can hear the quality in the motor and its a joy to drive. But absolutely puzzling how the GX can come down the assembly line with all the other Toyota vehicles that get much newer multimedia tech and it not end up in the GX dash. To be honest I didn't buy the GX for the tech.. so I don't really lament over it too much.. I can listen to a podcast and I can take phone call when I need to.. and the AC seats save me during the summers in Texas.. But to add insult to injury they purposefully don't upgrade the safety to V2..Which must be a fairly simple module swap. It just plain sucks Toyota. I bought the GX because I love the Prado. Its a perfect fit between the 4Runner and the Landcruiser. I could care less if it has a T or an L on the front. I know whats its bones are. Hopefully in what seems like typical fashion for Toyota to be a bit slow to update the U.S. market stuff... The new GX is coming.. ?
A lot of people think their phone is more important than their car. Those people will go through 5-15 phones over the lifetime of your GX. Enjoy your astute automotive purchase.
I have a question Kirk, if the Lexus GX still sells fairly well here in the USA then why are they trying to kill it off?
Great question. I don't think they make that much money on it compared to most of their models... it probably doesn't help their cafe/epa figures
Kirk, this SUV have been around over ten years. They should revise it or kill it off, but don’t drag us along waiting for a new model.
My 2020 prado 2.8 diesel Kakadu is fantastic
We have a 2009 Prado with the 1GR-FE 4.0 V6, Which produces enough power, the 2.8 L 4 cyl Diesel or the 2.7 L 4cyl Petrol seem underpowered to me.
Yoo kirk
About new venza do you have any idea about the target market like us , european, middle east ?
I hope they keep the 4.0 V6 for 2021.
The 2021 4Runner will have it. That engine is (to use the cliche) "bullet proof" but as most know mileage is "meh" it's a bit lacking power/torque.
So the LC Prado is the Lexus GX right...
What’s the car play upgrade?
I want this here!!
I have seen articles and youtube videos that suggest the release of a 300 series Landcruiser in 2021 as a 2022 model. Is that expected?
It's possible!
if toyota offers the land cruiser prado in the state with that diesel engine, it will sell in millions trust me, its already availabe in south america
Toyota's current Diesels would not pass North American air pollution standards and they seem to have no intention to make the effort to change that fact.
How does The Prado relate to the version of the Land Cruiser that we do get here in the states?
Both are part of the LandCruiser family. The Prado is smaller and less powerful compared to the 200 Series (I4-Diesel/V6-Gas vs. V8-Gas/V8-Diesel). Toyota describes the Prado as a Light Duty Dual-Use Off-Roader while the 200 Series is the Heavy Duty Dual-Use Off-Roader. Their construction is similar: ladder-frame chassis, independent front suspension, rear beam axle, permanent four-wheel drive, and similar off-road angles/clearance. The 200 is the "better" vehicle, but it is also more expensive and sadly not available everywhere. Here in Europe we only get Prados by normal means. Other current Land Cruisers are the FJ-Cruiser, which is basically an off-road-focused short-wheelbase Prado 120, and the 70 Series which is the Heavy Duty Utility Vehicle (more utilitarian, front beam axle, selectable 2WD/4WD). Fortuner, 4Runner, Tacoma, and Hilux are their own family which is loosely related to the Land Cruiser.
@@elguusko5481 thank you for the explanation. I still seems weird to me for such a big vehicle to be a 4cyl, even if it is a diesel.
@@AlexandarHullRichter You're not wrong. They are on the slower side, than, they are focused on reliability and longevity rather than peak-performance. That said, Prado and Hilux use the same line of 4cyl diesel engines each generation for the last 20+ years and have proven themself even in harsh conditions.
There are 3 lines of Land Cruisers. The 200s turning point goes back to the J45. There was a demand for a luxurious family off-roader and so the 40 was still in production and the Land Cruiser Station line was born. The 1st was the FJ55 followed by the 60, 80, 100 and the 200. When the 70 was in production there was a demand for a more comfortable, less thirsty, but still utilitarian Land Cruiser. The engineers at Toyota took the 70 Series and replaced the leaf springs with coil springs and they gave it a smaller engine. The Land Cruiser II was born, later named Bundera. Then they came up with the facelift for the coil sprung 70 and it was finally named Prado. The leaf sprung 70 is still in production but the Prado parted ways with the 70 as the station did before. So they continued the development of the Prado and came up with the 90, 120 and the 150 Series shown in the video. The FJ Cruiser is based on the Prado Chassis but isn’t an official member of the Land Cruiser family. The latest 4Runner is also build on the Prado frame. If you want more details look for the book Land Cruiser Legend by Alexander Wohlfarth.
Any ideas why Toyota doesn’t sell this SUV in the US?
Because they make a luxury version of the Prado for the US market it call the Lexus GX. We get the Luxury version the rest of the world get the peasant version 😂
TOYOTA PRADO is better off road car with 2 lockers, MTS/CC...
Top engine 4.0 v6 with 6speed transmission.
Start stop feature is an annoyance, just like turning off cylinders (RAM trucks).
@kirk I have to laugh listening to you rail on the GX. It is so true! Lexus has a gem and they're letting it rot on the vine! Just like they did with the GS! Speaking of that... I took my 2016 GS350 in for a system update to work with Enform. And when I got it back... Alexa was now on the car! LoL considering doing an upgrade to get Carplay in the GS. And I'm going to do the system that does not require you to plug in.
Haha thanks mate! That's crazy that the updated enform has Alexa. And yes I've heard very little but still good things about the wireless carplay retrofit.
I think they are not selling Prado because of 4Runner
I love it 💯
I dont care about the leather seats. The only think the Lexus GX over the Prado is the the V8 engine.
how the heck does the GX not have Apple Carplay by this point is beyond me.
I live in Toronto and I see very few GXs, when I go to Russia I see a lot of Prados. Prado sells much better worldwide, GX was made for US market and it sells poorly, so sadly there is a chance that GX will share GSs fate
@@reg15os In the US the GX sells really well, don’t know what you’re talking about…

Bro you have the 4Runner much better in my opinion, and yes you got first the pronunciation right. Cheers!
Thx for the update. I'm in the market for a new large SUV and I respect the Land Cruiser, but I just can't buy a 2010 vehicle for a 2020 price. I was hoping for an upgrade by now. I find the US Lexus version repulsive with the spindle grill and excessive body modifications.
I’d rather have that than the GX
I'm glad that vehicle isn't in USA also I'm also im happy that land cruiser series + hilux isn't in USA (soon land cruiser 200 will be no more in USA)
Just stick with 4runner and Takoma
And keep REAL Toyota vehicles outside USA
Iam hoping they remove KDSS from entry level models like curent face lift did here in russia.
didnt even knew toyota still selling diesels around here...the land cruiser is an icon wherever you are .
I love it.
Wish they made this GX or Prado in the US in diesel - great cars but gas guzzlers
Still waiting on Sequoia!
Toyota has really been hurt in their refresh cycles by the corporate TNGA platform directive. It just took a really long time to develop. It will be a good thing long-term, but has really caused some current models to over-extend and become very long in the tooth.
Along with that - Nothing dates a vehicle quicker than the infotainment system. Traditional auto manufacturers (Tesla excluded) cannot update the interface quickly enough to keep up with customer expectations that are driven by smartphone technology. They really need to experiment with going back to more physical controls and just implement smartphone screen mirroring on the center display. Somehow they need to push the system responsiveness and software interface back onto the smartphone where it can be more quickly developed and updated. Otherwise, just give me a simple 2DIN radio that I can replace with an aftermarket unit to update like the good old days...
Prado= High Political Personal and/or Business owner.
You have to wonder why Toyota would make the 4Runner for the US when they have the Prado. If you look at the 4Runner, it has cheaper running gear, and a cheaper interior. My guess is that they couldn't sell the Prado in the US, because the US market wouldn't pay for it. the other changes in the GX over the Prado would be top speed. I set my cruise at 95mph/150kph for hours at a time in my GX. In Costa Rica, you cant go over 100kph. The complaint with the 80 series was top speed. The GX has better aero, cause your not climbing over logs on the way to work everyday.
The 4Runner Limited is very comparable to top Prado trims. The Prado we NEED here is the cheaper 2 door.
@@rightlanehog3151 the top level 4runner gets the better AWD system thats on the Prado, and the GX. The limited 4Runner is almost the same cost as a base GX. Where do you live?
@@raullasvegas I live in Canada. North America is the only continent where you cannot buy a 2 door Toyota 4X4 which makes no sense as this is Toyota's biggest market. The FJ was based on the 2 door Prado platform but flopped due to radical 'styling'. If they had brought over the 2 Prado priced below the 4Runner as was the FJ, it would have been much more widely embraced. In my opinion, the Prado is easily Toyota's best looking SUV. Lastly, the 4Runner is a fine machine and in the US market, the SR5 level is an absolute bargain in the world of genuine 4X4s. If Toyota would again offer a basic 4Runner with a manual, I would probably stop pining for the elusive Prado.
I really wish Toyota would bring the Prado and keep the Land Cruiser in the USA. These SUVs are the perfect blend of capability, reliability and durability while also being comfortable, classy and refined.
In my opinion, on the Toyota body on frame SUV side the 4Runner is too “young bro feeling” while the Sequoia is way too big and looks like a bloated whale. On the Lexus side, the GX and LX are both awesome, but the bodywork is way too low for an off-road vehicle and some of the luxury features are not necessary.
I feel like Toyota could nail the USA market with a mid range Prado and mid range LC300 and offer the higher end models Prado and LC300 models as the GX and LX in the Lexus line up.
You are comparing 4 cylinder engine with 8 cylinder Lamaooo
And it compares surprisingly well
Joshveer Atwal and yet the 2.8 diesel will tow much better than the lazy petrol V8
Don't worry man, you are saying Prado correctly. It's pronounced p r aaaa d o

How much fuel does it carry? Come on, this is important!
Americans to get the 4Runner which is very similar to the prado except it’s more capable.
Please redesign it and give it more power
Next Gen prado should have V6 power Diesel. While Land cruiser 300 should remain v8 but more Hp...
Get a hold of the new Genesis G80 and do a review. You might hear the bells going off with likes and views.. It looks like a valiant replacement for the Lexus GS I’m curious about this car
We have never got the good Toyota vehicles here , most people didn't even know that Toyota had small diesel and gas four door trucks in the 80s and the most bulletproof proof landcruiser pickups ( you know , the only vehicles trusted to finish a tough life or death desert crossing ) never available in the US or Canada ! The landcruiser trucks are allowed for use in our potash mines and really pisses me off because you can go down to the Toyota dealer and see these brand new landcruiser trucks with absolutely no reason that it can't be plated , got everything , but bullshit regulations keep it out , otherwise people wouldn't buy any north american junk !
