Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey RUclips channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my RUclips channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

To be fair, I think this would go differently in reality. There is a big difference between padded gloves vs. bare hands, and a bigger difference between a knife and a marker. Just because a marker marks you doesn't mean a knife would go deep, and it's probably harder to take ir disarm a marker from your opponent than to take or disarm a knife.

out of all knife attacks ive seen, not one of them had padded gear nor did they swap knife hands while actively grappling, because thats how you lose the knife. the use of a marker defeated the purpose of both men fighting to live, which makes the "bad guy" swap knife hands without caring if he drops it, he was clearly just trying to "win" the scenario and not fighting like losing his knife would cost his life. Even tho that front kick didn't drop the trained guy with a facemask, im willing to bet a boot to the face like that to a normal, unarmored attacker would drop his ass.

Also, a real knife attack would not start at a distance. They would hide the knife until they were very close to you, if they are smart.
      This video shows 2 things:
      1. Medieval knights were on the spot..

@@emremokoko When it comes to an actual knife fight, the loser dies in the street, and the winner dies in the ambulance. When it comes to a knife attack from someone determined to kill an unarmed person, even a skilled one, a smart martial artist will just run, just like they would from 4 attackers at once (and just like any real martial artist should from any fight that can be avoided, even easily winnable ones, and I'd say even especially the easily winnable ones), because IpMan doesn't exist in reality and trying some Steven Segal nonsense in that kind of situation is only going to get you killed. You're very right, though, that you'd almost never be attacked as "fairly" as in this situation, you're almost certainly not going to see it coming and be stabbed 15 times before you're even aware they have a knife, if, like you said, the attacker isn't a blithering moron, so these skilled fighters had even more of a leg up than they would in any real situation.
"In this video, one guy has the knife and the armor" First of all, they're wearing the same armor, and second of all the entire purpose of this is to simulate what happens when one person has a knife and the other doesn't, so I don't get what your point was.
Also, the number one way a knight was killed in battle, outside of maybe a crossbow/longbow, was to be dragged to the ground and stabbed to death through all of the obvious weak points in their armor, almost exactly like happened to these guys, except the knight would be wearing 45 pounds of armor and fighting in the mud with 5 peasants all shanking him at once. The purpose of plate armor was to defend against slashing attacks from other people in plate armor (and random small hits from thrown rocks and that kind of thing when in open battle), it absolutely will not save your life from a knife attack like this, the only thing that would do that is your sword and killing the attacker(s) first. That's part of the reason that knights would so often be fighting other knights with codes and rules or from horseback, and they would often end up taking their opponents hostage, because training and equipping a knight is incredibly expensive and takes decades, while getting together 5 peasants with knives is very easy and nearly as effective when it comes to fighting on foot like this.

I'd say the majority of rays that carry knives don't have a job, so whilst I agree and have my eyes opened to how hard it would be
We should still remember that these were all decent sized guys, with some kind of martial arts knowledge because even with the knife they didn't lose position very easily except the takedowns
So if these were smaller people I think they'd have less wounds and more points

@@loukvge8946 I agree. I think striking is the best way to stop the knife wielder. Straight up grappling with the knife proved to be a losing strategy. Once you grab a guy that has the knife he can stab you with his eyes closed if he is that determined. He can feel the the openings on you. I don't want to give him this opening on myself. I have to out move him and strike with the utmost power to stun him or knock him out and this is to be done explosively without hesitation and spontaneous. I love boxing but this is not boxing. I'm going to throw a punch with my whole body and the target is 3 feet behind the persons head. I 'm going to hit with a 150 mph punch right through the head. My intention is nothing more than to kill or disable the attacker. Raw explosive speed and accuracy is all I'm looking to generate. Like a sniper, one glance one shot one kill with no hesitation. I attended a knife defense seminar a couple of months ago, and the instructor essentially said, "All these exercises will give you a good chance...at blocking the first strike. Everything after that is anyone's guess because all attackers act differently." He even demonstrated it with another high level instructor, saying exactly what he was going to do before he did it and even then he managed to land quite a few hits. Seeing this exercise really drives home the point that no matter what, you're going to get stabbed if you fight a guy with a knife.

You can take off your shirt and use as a weapon to trap his arm when attacker starts jamming the knife into you. However, never engage in a fist brawl with a knife fighter or you will def lose.

One of the first things that appear on the "main" book for messer combat it says something along the lines of:
"It doesn't matter how skilled you are. This is a Messer, may the lord have mercy on your soul."
The shorter the blade, the more umpredictable it is.

I can't imagine them doing any better against a swordsman.

    • @daxasd3270
      @daxasd3270 Месяц назад +7

@@djinn666 well, against a newbie things sometimes works. It's more like a rigged coin toss, because you can't predict the enemy. Although if the newbie has at least a bit practise, it is easier to read his movements, so you can sometimes managed to get past the sword and get into grappling. If he overswings it like a bat or remains in a stabbing position without movement, you may have a short window of oppportunity (also assume you've at least thin leather gloves and experience in touching the blade, it's still risky and can end bad for you)... At least a bit trained? Near zero chance unless your skill gap is enourmous (so basically 10y of training vs. first three months works, but 10y vs. fist time can go horribly wrong and 10y to 1y is probably not enough skill gap except you know what you're doing and enemy is just not trained to deal with grappling).
So, sword is actually maybe easier than a knife, because as soon as you somehow get the hand on the handle, there are quite some leverage you can use - with knife? No chance. too short, too fast, no grip and probably deliberately sacrificing a hand is your best chance to survive, which is too counterintuitive to pull it through and the chances that is works are probably in single or low double digits at best.
We've practised some takedowns against dagger, if you know where the enemy is coming from, there are movements that can do it, but it's like betting on two-three things you learn to do really well and then you just try to evade the enemy dagger for as long as possible until you see the opportunity to actually pull it through. But that's the theory, in practise it's the same as with swordsmen. If the enemy is just violent stabber, you're probably as good as dead except you drill specifically for it and the enemy does not know what he's doing. If the enemy is a newbie and tries actual techniques, but slow and bad, you'll manage. But as skill gap narrows, your chances are dropping really fast.
In both (dagger and sword), your best chances are either to play for time and distance and then somehow ambush him or, ambush him as soon as he draws it, be aggressive and go all-in before he even starts his attack. So basically - be first, be faster or be 3000% more skilled (which translates to being the first two). Both is probably not given.
So, when you're practising techniques, there are quite some things you can do dagger-on-dagger, which works as well, but if you go sparring it usually looks more like what people are doing in knife-on-knife competition: it quickly becomes a fencing (aka stabbing) match instead of grappling-dagger match.
What is also interesting is how technique evolves over time. Like, in medieval sources we find people punching with hammerfist, or open palms, because it's easier to remain healthy, still transition force and damage enemy this way. Doesn't mean people didn't used the whole arsenal of the body, it's just not modern boxing.
Nowadays people are punching knuckles to head, which, who would've thought, can end really bad for the fist if you do it w/o gloves (no wonder victorian boxing was boxing to the torso, not head). Medicine and technology really does wonder to how we fight (especially if it's about points).
On the other hand, as with kali, for example, you also have the seemless transition between using it "with weapon" and "without" weapon, unlike most modern martial arts and their derivatives, where we might emulate the transition by making people just "box" with weapons, but it's not like weapon handling is part of boxing and neither it is taught if you're primarily going to do non-weapon stuff anyway.
Knew a story: guy, master in olympic wrestling (probably best disposition). Opponent was some drunken alcoholic bum, got his knife out w/o guy seing. Guy went for grappling takedown. Noticed the stab wounds in the stomach maybe 20 minutes later after Adrenaline-low kicked and he just collapsed, blooding fucking everywhere. Point: knife probably still means death. It's especially too small to notice in time and you either have a bigger knife, aka sword or smth. Or you're dead. And, like, the german messer in that regard is more like a machete than a little stabby knife, yet yeah - it's not like sources recommend playing the hero.
Mostly the recommendation it's "fucking run" in any less-than-parity-situation. 2 Enemies? Run. You don't have arms? Run. No place to run? Try to find a way to run. Only thing they might recommend if you're not fast enough in running is using corners to get the short 1v1 ambush, but then? You guessed it. Run again.

    • @djinn666
      @djinn666 Месяц назад +3

@@daxasd3270 While it might be true that once within grapple range, a knife is better than a sword, I think it would be nearly impossible to get to that point.
Several contestants managed to get in range with a kick. That's not going to work against a swordsman. The additional distance from a sword would give a half second extra reaction time, enough to put up a guard, which you have no way to overcome.
People have tried the same tactic for swords vs spears, and in theory it's the same: get inside the spearman's guard. But in practice it's very hard to pull off because the spearman doesn't have to stand still and let you get close.

It's generally difficult for most people to effectively protect themselves against a knife attack. Krav Maga, for instance, instructs individuals to utilize objects like chairs as a barrier between themselves and the attacker, but if these options aren't available and escape isn't possible, the situation can become quite dire. This video certainly served as a stark reminder of these realities.

If you have a hard wooden chair the attacker with a Knife is probably fcked.
Knifes are dangerous weapons but hard chairs (especially older ones) have at least 3 times the range and kill with one good blow.
A full swing to the head kills instantly and even if they block halfway with the arms you can be sure they don't stab you no more.
Everyday objective are very underestimated. If you have nothing don't even try but when you got a chair or smth at hand the fight becomes equal if not in your favour very fast.
Attackers and defenders probably forget this all the time.
When you are getting attack by a burgler with a Knife you probably don't need to run to the kitchen to arm yourself.

Grabbing a chair is usually simply faster and more effective than grabbing a Knife.
Obviously depending where you are and if you don't detect a murder at all until they stand next to you you are dead either way but it's good to keep in mind that chairs can be the better option than Knifes which ppl in my experience usually forget.

IMO you have to take into account
      1) no one in this challenge had really proper knife training except for like one month
      2) they were all wering protective gear.. this is not life ultering but.. e G at 14:10 Matt landed a good left hand straight on the jaw. I dont know his punching power, but a good punch has taken people out on the street. This might have been enough to give him time to run.
      3) Not every knife is like "touchy lasersword sharp" where one scratch at the surface wounds you deeply into the organs. espescially with leather clothes on
People are not always paid assasins, with assasin weapons who attack you but more likely drug crackheads grabbing sharp bottles, kitchen knives, sharp edges and so on
against that most of the paticipants would have done much better

      Yes Knife defense is dangerous.
But statistics do not not necessarily support that conclusion sir. People get attacked in knife encounters and they survive. this does happen.
      4) also wrestling on pavement
At least seth could have had on or two knock outs on there
      5) also : this was a "safe space" training enviroment.
yes, for the fightes but also for the attackers.
I would at least put up the question if one , if this was a real life fight, the attackers are not also under adrenaline.
they were switching knives to left and right and right to left like they were juggling circus balls...

If you know you can't defend yourself because of skill or size, carry a self defense tool like a gun or pepper spray. Not to mention, most people who would choose the run option are most likely unathletic like the majority of the population so turning your back to run would be a death sentence, not even explaining that most people would freeze up, have a delayed reaction time and box themselves with their hands, i.e fetal position, where they are already going get stabbed. Over the past few years there has been a tournament held in Tokyo where martial artists take turns to attack each other with a dummy knife. I helped one of my students to prepare for it with red marker drills similar to this scenario. We both ended up with a lot of red marks! Interestingly we found in both our training drills and the actual tournament, it was aggressive striking which proved to be the most effective strategy. Trying to control the hand with the knife and grappling almost always went badly. Just like it did here. It was strikers who faired best in the tournament, not the people trained in knife defense.

The only criticism I can think of for this is that the guys were trying to avoid properly hurting their attackers. If anything, this tells us that keeping the guy with the knife as far away as possible is critical so going for a one-hit knock out is all or nothing (roundhouse/uppercut to the head or a strike to break a leg or arm) but probably your "best" chance. I love that this really does demonstrate that an aggressive guy with a knife is just not to be messed with and the idea of trying to take the knife out of his hands will more or less guarantee you getting stabbed.

This was another really good episode and a good illustration of how difficult it is to defend against a weapon. The only point, as I think others might have flagged, would be that the attacker (having full protection) meant they had no need to really defend themselves in any way either so some of the strikes done to them may have changed how the situation played out. This is, of course, the age old excuse for most training of this type, so I still think this was a very good illustration of what the outcome likely would be in a unarmed defense situation against a knife.

Having done enough sparring in my younger days, it isn't uncommon to have someone armoured (even a face shield) reduce their head defence because psychologically they have less need to defend it.
Is there a solution to this, no, not really. Which is why I happily accept the shortcomings of the scenario and why the episode was still very good :) It was a good episode and the series so far has been fantastic.

Great scenario and great work from the guys who stabbed. The energy and the aggression were legit.
Though I think there is one aspect, that is totally lost here but at the same time absolute essential:
The damage that the suspect receives.
Control and damage are connected quite close. Doing damage to the suspect might have a significant impact on the possibility to control him or the knife-arm.
In these Scenarios the suspects acted as they were invincible - which is ok but it needs to be mentioned. Of course even with a realistic behaviour on terms of damage, it would be a mess in a lot of cases.
But imagine you being in there as the Knife guy without a cup, getting kicked/kneed in the groin with force, receiving an hard elbow right trough the face or receiving solid strikes to the back of the head.
It is a fight and in any fight as long as it goes, the main goal is to establish control over the enemy and impose the own will. And doing damage and/or inflicting pain is the number one option to weaken the enemy and establish control. Controlling the weapon-arm is the number priority. But this is just one part. The other is to deliver as much damage as possible - as this is helping at the same time to maintain controll of the weapon arm and the suspect and finally take him out.
    Long talk short.
I just want to mention, that the part with damage is not included in this scenarios as the Knife guys just act like robots and real damage can't be delivered - for obvious reasons. With this a major part of defending against a knife is cut out of the scenarios.
Though this isn't taking anything away from the video. Good job from whole crew and great effort.

    • @nachtfuchs321
      @nachtfuchs321 Год назад

@@tallergeese That's right, but actually it is not that hard I think. When we train in scenarios/mugging we just react to a certain point to a significant strike. And I think this is absolutely necessary cause it changes the fight situation and dynamic. For example, if you deliver a solid knee to the groin/hip area, while ripping the subject into the knee, it will at least cause him breaking in the mid structure and bending forward (pain resistance or not). That offers the side or the back of the head as further targets.
The scenario in this case was basically:
Try to survive a grappling match against a suspect with a knife for a certain time. Though the fighters didn't got that as an instruction obviously, they learned quite quick, that striking has no effect and left it for the rest of the scenarios, using their energy to grapple.

Great idea, not sure that the implementation is fair though. As many have said, not only does the body armour and padded room prevent the full impact of strikes (no way does an attacker come straight back at you after receiving that thrust kick), but it's questionable if the attacker would have held on to the knife in a lot of these situations when taking blows either. With all that said, great vid which still illustrates how deadly a knife can be.

    • @douchebagwearingrainbowpants

Yeah this scenario heavily favors the pointy object and disfavors blunt force trauma. The remaining option is 100% controlling the movement of the pointy object, which is kind of an unrealistic expectation. If there was a mop in the room and the attacker didn't have a helmet, it could have been a very different story.

Just some things to keep in mind: 1.)Knives are not lightsabers, not every 1cm movement is going to be doing insane damage. 2.)We have rib cages for a reason, knives can and will absolutely slide between the ribs but some shanks to the upper chest will be stopped by the bone of the rib cage. 3.)The attackers have head gear on here, so knocking them out to stop the onslaught is pretty much out of the question. 4.) Due to the fact knives are not lightsabers, there is always the possibility the knife gets stuck in flesh, bone, or clothes especially with a defender restraining and twisting the attackers arms. So its much more likely than shown in this video that the knife could be disarmed at some point in the struggle.
All of this being said, there is no avoiding damage in a knife fight as you see. Fatally or not, you are getting stabbed and/or cut. Just trying to point out some variables that probably reduce the accuracy of this test.

I saw a former special forces operator who explained that in such a situation you have to block the first knife blow with your forearm, at the same time moving your butt backwards, increasing the distance of the knife from the important organs and at the same time when you block with the other hand you go all in and hope that you knock out the attacker before he lands a second knife blow. But the best defense against a knife-wielding attacker is a few bullets to the chest and moving backwards

You actually can't do that, because a free arm can pull off and strike from any direction, and if you go in you will get stabbed in kidneys and wherever. That's what Icy Mike tried to do and did well. He still died. The only reasonably solid way is to somehow get under the arm like in a throw, but you risk everything if you fail this. Locking the arm to the body is likely to fail too.
So strikes and keeping distance if possible is superior. Ignore the knife (you can't block it really), strike to take out the attacker as best as you can. If they do shoot in, you better move fast and grapple (to throw or lock) not wrestle. Do *NOT* shoot in. Let the attacker try to shoot in and miss, and eat more strikes or get offbalanced and pulled or thrown. If you get good at it, the attacker will end up on the floor and you're standing. Grind them to dead from there. Do *NOT* let the attacker grab you or successfully shoot in. Do dodge, do use footwork to get off the line, do strike to keep distance or knock out and do throw where it's safe (e.g. after dodging a shot).
Knife defense is really different from fistfighting, closer to fencing.

Is this a joke or some sort of facetious attempt? I am being thoroughly serious.
I understand that it is important to understand how deadly and dangerous a knife is (it is my preferred weapon of choice for defense other than a Rokushakubo Bo Staff which isnt realistic 99% of the time), but c'mon.
The padding and protective gear makes a HUGE difference for the knife wielder. As well as the fact that they are using a marker. The beautiful side kick or that solid punch from the fifth defender would probably have ended things immediately. And the constant switching of hands? Multiple times the wielder would have either stabbed their own hand or grabbed the blade during the switch and essentially cut their own fingers off.
This is a good demonstration of "The impossibility of defense against a knife if you were not able to injure the opponent"😅
    Or....
"The zero chance against a skilled adversary with a knife"
But hands down, the protective gear is the largest difference maker. Knowing that, trained in self defense, a strike to the head, solar plexus, or anything else's impact is not an option, u r literally only left with trying to isolate the weapon.
    Still entertaining tho

I think it also depends on the person attacking. In this they purposefully chose a guy that weighs more than most of the contenders. I think if you have a significant weight and strength advantage you can do it. I also think Seths side kick was really nice. If you do that to some guy with no fighting experience he will probably fall down. If you kick his head you might knock him out. As soon as he gets close to you, you are basically dead though. Yes, knife defense is really difficult....but this scenario was UNFAIRLY difficult. I do a sport where this comes up a lot.
1)A small marker is not a knife... If it's supposed to be a tiny knife then most of those wounds wound not be fatal, assuming medical care is not too far away...and if it's a longer knife then the attacker would not be able to pass between hands, avoid the grapple, and maintain control of it that easily. The knife is also basically a light saber...for real lots of things help, like clothing, etc, and if you overstab you disarm yourself...and it's easy to cut yourself in a grapple.
    2) The defender has no way to end the fight... Seth's side kick might have just ended the fight in the real world...several of those guys landed knees and elbows that could have instantly ended a real fight without the gear and with no one being nice when the attacker is so focused on offense and takes a solid undefended shot to the jaw or diaphragm.
3)If it was a real knife and ultra sharp the attackers would have severely cut themselves many times, especially in the slams.
