I adored this show and all the stars. I used to run home from school as fast as I could to watch it with my mom. They don't make stars or shows like this anymore and that's a shame.
I did that too. I watched it with my dad because my mother was getting for work. When Brett and Charles would give a crazy answer, my father and I would bust out laughing and my mother would come in the room to see what was going on. She did not believe how they were talking.
The best game show ever. I still watch it today. Mr. Rayburn is the Master of Game show host. He, Brett, Charles Nelson Rilley and many of the guess, made the show fun to watch and be on. They made magic. I haven't seen a game show yet come close to that kind of magic. I will always prefer it over many of the new game shows today.

Remember "Match Game," very well...it was one of my favorites and still is a favorite. Richard Dawson always captured my eye with his creative answers...not to mention, he was very easy on the 👀.
I was born in 1977, so I was unable to watch Match Game when it was at its height in the mid 70's, but thank goodness for Game Show Network, as I have been able to watch just about every episode from the 1973 to 1979 run. It is one of the things that I watch pretty much every day. (It is not on Saturday and Sunday.) I just love the camaraderie between the regulars.
When I was in college I scheduled my classes around The Price is Right and Match Game (73 on). As a student I dreamed of getting on TPIR and winning a car, which was wishful thinking. But my afternoons were spent laughing myself silly with Match Game. The chemistry of Gene and the panel was just off the charts! It's fun to see these clips because I haven't seen the show since the 70s. Match Game was truly the pinnacle of game shows!
Yes, I was a big fan. There was a relaxed atmosphere of casual fun, and Gene Rayburn was what made it work. Match game was one of those guilty pleasures, and a show you didn’t want to miss. It didn’t seem like a carefully crafted production (although it obviously was) so much as a group of friends having a lot of laughs. Match Game from the early ‘70’s was fun, relaxed, risqué - and brings back a lot of fond memories...like Hollywood Squares.
As much as I love Jeopardy, and loved Match Game, my absolute favorite was The Pyramid with Dick Clark. Clark had wit, humor& smarts. I loved how he put the contestants at ease.He would give the contestant a quick shoulder rub before the final round.I found that amusing!👍
This was always one of my favorite game shows. Gene Rayburn always seemed like someone you would like. He was likeable, funny, and had charm. The interaction with the regulars was always fun. Had a party feel to the show. Unlike shows like the Price is Right the prizes weren't really the reason for watching, it was just the fun of playing the game. And I liked that better.
My mother worked and I was ill very often, sometimes even when I wasn't. Mom made a bed up for me on the couch and I spent the day watching all of the game shows. Match Game was my favorite show!
I was 12-13 watching this show when it came on in the early 70s. I would come home from school and settle in. I probably didn't understand all the innuendo, but I loved it. A bad day was when the Watergate hearings pre-empted it--they rotated between channels in airing the hearings. I had enough of that in Social Studies class.
Match Game was my favorite game show. I wasn't yet home from school when it was on, but my mom would tape record the audio for me sometimes. I like watching it on the Game Show Network now whenever I can. Gene Rayburn was a great host and I liked the voices he would do, like for 102-year-old Mr. Periwinkle plus his banter with the guest stars and the contestants.
Gene Rayburn took on the hardest task in comedy: being the straight man. He was truly excellent at it, because he always gave the stars their chances to shine, which is what the straight man has to do. I've noted numerous times where he could have dropped a one-liner or bon mot himself, but didn't. Not, I think, because he wasn't clever enough, but because he was concentrating on making the game work and also didn't want to appear to upstage anyone. He got his share of laughs with some of the zany physical stuff, for the most part. Or with jokes by the others made at his expense. The stars themselves also don't compete to prove out as funniest. They all have their own approach to humor, but don't show off vis-a-vis each other. And a few of the non-regulars are obviously having so much fun it's really charming (David Doyle and Kaye Stevens come to mind as good examples).
I ❤️Ed this show. I was a kid in the 60’s and as I watched it in my teens, my vocabulary grew (especially during the double entendres) I knew what they meant, and would watch my stepmothers reaction. I wished they’d do a re-re-re boot of the show (I think I got all the reboots.)
I recently started binge watching the 1st Season (1973). I was 11 and watching with my Mother in '73. Our laughter watching together has come rushing back for me. I can now mainly listen to the dialogue when I'm occupied with household chores. It's been a delightful revisitation. Charles Nelson Reilly should be remembered as a National treasure!
My husband and myself we watch match game the reruns every single day Monday through Friday. And we really enjoy it and we have a Lotta fun watching it.
As a pre-teen and teen this was one of the funniest game shows ever. It always was full of laughs and some of the answers could be real dirty too. Even watching it on reruns it still is a great show to see. Anybody who has never watched it is missing out. Not every show was great, but they all had a moment or several.
The Match Game fascinated me so much when I saw it for the first time when I was 6 or 7 years old. I enjoyed it mainly for the music and sound effects back then, but now I enjoy seeing it on RUclips and GSN now that I'm grown up and can understand the proceedings. I have even lived out the fantasy of being on the show through some guys in California that put on simulations of every game show ever aired.
one of my favorite things over xmas holidays was on the last match game show of the year, they'd pull up the old sign and bring down the one with the new year on it-sort of like my own new years' eve party with the folks who were doing the bulk of raising me at the time
I adored Gene Rayburn! He made the show worth watching most times, then of course there was Richard Dawson! The many guest stars were fun, the banter even funnier.
I attended several tapings in 1967 and 1968 .Between the ages of 12 and 13 years old. This was when the show was on NBC-TV in New York City at NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza 50th street and Ave of Americas ( 6th Ave) Radio City Music Hall across the street. The show was taped in studio 8H. The same studio that's has been the home of Saturday Night Live since the show began in the fall of 1975. Back then Match Game would tape 5 shows in 2 days. Back to back 2 shows and the next day 3 shows . 2 in the mid morning or early afternoon and final taping afternoon .

While I never grew up in the 70s I was born dec 15th 1989 but loved watching and still love watching reruns now with my mother who likes the show though maybe not as much as me.

monty hall would give $100 for a ... ? the announcer was great describing the products or you can trade it for what's behind the big box . and the zonks
The 1970's game shows for me as a kid were the "Golden Age" My small brain could pick UP on those "dirty jokes" that were hinted at. Newlywed Game, HollyWood Squares, Family Fued. Even the non-risque ones. Jokers Wild & Price is Right. Gene was the MAN!
I went to a taping of Match game back in 1975. As a 12yo boy, I joked during the audience warm-up that I wanted to roll down the stage door stairs with Gene on the opening of the show. This brought forth a huge laugh from the audience, and Johnny Olsen called Gene out and told him "That young man in the back wants to roll with you." Gene fired right back that he wouldn't, but maybe Brett Sommers would. This got an even bigger laugh and embarrassed my parents. Brett later made a crack about it during the game, but sadly it was edited out by the time the episode aired. IIRC she said something like "That young man in the audience would blank with you."
The double entendre thing was all about using the word "blank" which is used in spoken language for a profane word or in written language for fill-in-the-blank. The appeal of the show was based entirely on just that.
I wasn't born until 1979, but from watching the reruns on Buzzr and RUclips, Gene Rayburn defined The Match Game. Game show hosts had class, elegance and swagger in those days, and the shows themselves were far more interesting, and the contestants were way more intelligent and entertaining.
In it's heyday it was one if not the best. Some of the contestants were just as good as the panel. In 1975, one in particular fit right in ....Ron Valenti . Lighthearted & very funny show. Episodes 498 & 499 (if anyone is interested). 🤣🤣💥💫
I'm 56 and grew up on this show and STILL watch it often on Buzzr .. Richard Dawson and Brett Sommers were great but Charles Nelson Rileys quick gay infused wit was legendary very similar to Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares.. I was always pretty sure they were a little buzzed or high this confirms it.. the men would be touchy feely with the women but in a jovial respectful way.. not creepy and everyone seemed like good friends almost family. How society is so uptight and super pc now is so sad.. anyway that's a great show.. oh also the Gong Show!
There was show on GSN called the 50 greatest game shows several years back and it had Match Game #1. The reason why it was #1 is because it was appropriate humor on the set and a fun loving host in Gene Rayburn and wonderful celebrities. The other reboots years weren’t as good as the ones of the 70s.
I loved the show when I got older. I was a child in the seventies. I was not aware until later that when they found out Gene Rayburn's real age they got rid of him. That was really sad. Since Rayburn was really the heart of the show. I was not aware of the so called dummy seat. I wonder were the ladies that were placed in that seat aware of it?
I loved Match Game! It was funny and you enjoyed the show. I watched it every chance I got. I am Gen X so I watched the show from the 70s,The Match Game/ Hollywood Squares Hour and some of the other versions then we finally got to the last version I watched ,Match Game with Alec Baldwin. That one was crazy. Lol Boy did the show change over the years. I wish it would come back again. It was on at night after the Pyramid game show with Michael Strahan. There were 3 game shows on that night. I think it was on Sundays.
I remember that my dad 1973 when Mitch came first came on he made sure we sat and watched it with him, we got hooked after watching the first one. Also, when they went onto the afternoon, I used to run home from school also like a lot of people just to catch match game! When my friends and I would go to the park and match game was coming on in the evenings I told them I would have to leave and they would say why and I’d say because my dad and I watch match game together! They laughed at me they thought it was silly . But I did not care.
Let me tell you this: It was the funniest show with the greatest stars since Hollywood Squares it's a bit edgy at times but it was funny, hilarious and clean
When I was a teen in the 70's we had Match GAme followed by the Gong Show after school- what a background to get homework done to- 2 seriously funny shows-we were seriously lucky in the 70's!
@@FactsVerse Been thinkin' on this- maybe some bloopers and/or behind the scenes on 2 shows my dad HATED- Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in and The Smothers Brothers, also (and I'm sure you've done just haven't seen) stuff on Hollywood Squares? Also, what about the old-time 'Rasslers' like Dr x, Baron Von Rascke, that crowd from when Vince McMahon was an assistant interviewer who was mainly tossed around by the 'rasslers' he interviewed (before the steroids and WWF, soon to be WWE)? Just a few suggestions my friend. You have a great channel!

Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Gary. Happy to know that you're a fan ❤
Loved Match Game ! It was hysterical!
So many great memories from that show!!
Absolutely! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse when Gene got a perm and the guest laughed their butts off!!
@@FactsVerse gene "dumb dora was so dumb" every on HOW DUMB IS SHE? gens " she is so dumb ......
In it's heyday it was one if not the best. Some of the contestants were just as good as the panel. In 1975, one in particular fit right in ....Ron Valenti . Lighthearted & very funny show. Episodes 498 & 499 (if anyone is interested). 🤣🤣💥💫
Gene scared me to death as a kid, still kinda does. Loved CNR though.
You can still watch Match Game episodes from the mid 70s on Game Show Network from 1pm to 2pm Eastern. They also replay many other classic game shows.
We absolutely agree! Thank you for your watching our video. Be on the lookout for the next one!
Love watching the re-runs.
Us too! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
I'm 56 and grew up on this show and STILL watch it often on Buzzr .. Richard Dawson and Brett Sommers were great but Charles Nelson Rileys quick gay infused wit was legendary very similar to Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares.. I was always pretty sure they were a little buzzed or high this confirms it.. the men would be touchy feely with the women but in a jovial respectful way.. not creepy and everyone seemed like good friends almost family. How society is so uptight and super pc now is so sad.. anyway that's a great show.. oh also the Gong Show!
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
I love Match Game even today! Its so funny.
We agree! Glad to know that you're still watching the show today. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
One of the best game shows ever.
I was a kid, so I liked it a lot!
Best game show. Best host. Simple.

Gene Rayburn, The Man Who Loved to Smile.
Loved The match game and Gene Rayburn
When I was a teen in the 70's we had Match GAme followed by the Gong Show after school- what a background to get homework done to- 2 seriously funny shows-we were seriously lucky in the 70's!
Thank you for the trip down memory lane! What other types of video would you like to see?
I liked Gene a lot
My favorite semi-regular on "Match Game" was Joyce Bulifant.
It did feel like family with all of them made it lots more fun
Of course I was. Currently watching it on GSN.
Loved it. Feel good TV.
I guess Jack knew how Brett would give answers ... shaking your head.
To call this a "gameshow" Is a serious miscarriage of term...this was a comedy, game show, entertaining ensemble!
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I've heard that Charles Nelson Reilly once said, "Match Game isn't a game show, it's a social engagement." Very true.
Watched it as a kid in the 70s. Didn’t get all of the jokes at the time, but it was a very funny and odd game show. Watch it now on game show network and am like “OH! Can’t believe they said that!”
Glad to know that you're a fan of Match Game! What other types of video would you like to see?
