Hi! Amazing video, I’ve watched it a few times and getting excited to take my van to the balkans! I was just wondering what insurance you guys used? And how it all works with green cards etc? :)
Hey! Thanks! So, not sure what insurer you're with, but for Croatia & Montenegro, we were covered by our insurer and green card. We just needed to notify them of when we were traveling there. For Albania, we were not covered, but we picked up insurance at the border. We entered by ferry into Durres and did it at the port. Hope you have the best time!
Great video! We plan to travel there as well in our van in the next weeks. The fact that you hear more horror stories than is really true about the roads in Albania is good news for me. I've read that there are places where you shouldn't go into the sea because the Wastewater from toilets etc flow unfiltered into the sea. Do you know anything about that? I hope the water quality wasn't the reason for your dog to feel sick.
We loved Albania - and really don't think it deserves the bad rep that people seem to give it! Everyone was SO friendly. The landscapes & architecture were amazing. And yep - the roads were far better than people told us! As to the sewage question, this is the first we heard about it, so wouldn't be able to advise. Frank got sick in Portugal. He treated the sea as his dog bowl, but salt water is not good for dogs! ha! We swam in the sea and we were fine. One thing that you will probably see is that Albania, like some other Balkan countries, have a problem with litter. This didn't ruin our experience, but we did do a few clean-ups in spots we stayed in. We blame the lack of infrastructure, rather than individuals though! Hope you enjoy your trip!
We're heading to Albania in our campervan later in the year. Thanks for your great videos. Do I need to buy insurance at the border? How does that work?
Hey! Check with your insurers first to see if Albania is included. Ours didn't include it, so we bought insurance at the border, if you're coming via land, go in via one of the main crossings and there should be a kiosk/office/stand type thing that you can pull in by and purchase 3rd party insurance from them. If you come in via boat, like we did, there was a kiosk just before you drive out of the port in Durres. Enjoy and hope that helps!
Ha, who knows, I doubt how useful it'd be but it's illegal to drive around Albania without it. Just drive slow and cautiously 😂, Albanian driving is mostly mental in the outside/fast lanes. Let them overtake you! Ha!
Hey Alexis! Overall I think wild camping is allowed in Albania, but tbh, we didn't feel like we needed to, as the campsites were so cheap and the hosts were so kind and interesting that it added to our experience. However, I'm sure if you loaded up the Park4Night you'll see loads of good, free spots. We didn't feel unsafe 👌

can you wild camp wherever you want in Albania? how liberal are they with wild camping? Is it safe?
