I’ve been doing a little research on cocker spaniels because I hope to have one of my own one day. I currently have 2 Siberian huskies whom I adore. Cocker spaniels are just as beautiful and I like that they are energetic as well. Thank you for sharing these. It’s great to know you can groom them yourself :)
I am so glad I found your video! It's really helped me a lot - especially your reassuring manner when explaining each part of the process. I really appreciate your sharing your tips. :)
This video was FANTASTIC. i havent even used clippers before and i did a pretty darn good job for my first time! Even with the blending. Thanks so much! :-)
lovely dog he was so calm and cute, i own a cocker spaniel and she is like my baby, in Panama ( the country) grooming a dog cost 15 to 20 boxs, little bit expensive in the US 50 boxs. You did a great job, and i am happy to know about the organization that help rescue cockers, the most beautiful dogs in the world!
It's a #10 blade through the entire video. You can pretty much use a #10 blade for everything you need to do in Cocker Spaniel grooming. Unless you're going to get in to some professional-quality grooming... or show dog grooming... there's really no need for any other blade.
Thank You for sharing this. I have two rescue cockers, and I adore them. They are a sweet breed. I purchased my first, and after falling in love with the breed, I never purchased another but chose to rescue my following four. With Covid, I have stayed close to home, and now my two are looking like they need to be rescued. I have clippers and want to start doing my own grooming. I would like to know the size of your blade. It seems so easy watching you take care of Dresden. I am happy to know it will not cut the dog if you choose not to use the comb over the blade. You are giving me hope! Thanks so much, and bless you for loving rescues.
I use the standard blade that comes with the Andis clippers, which is called a #10 blade. It's really the only blade you would need for grooming a pet Cocker. Some curved scissors are also helpful to have, and be sure to get some Andis "Kool Lube" lubricant to spray on to the clipper blades every now and then, especially when the blades get hot.
Thanks 🙏 for teaching in the blending hair cut. I have a cocker spaniel but his hair is too curly and that makes it harder too blend in his hair cut. Thanks 🙏
I rescued Roda,a cocker.Roda could not find a home. She had been returned to the pound twice, for her aggressive / defensive nature especially around children.Roda has been a great companion to me. . I'm learning how to use clippers .
Ever use a skip tooth blade when trimming with a attachment for a longer cut. Could I use one to save time and maybe keep the blade cooler. Sometimes I get hemmed up with the blade cutting so slow, when using an attachment for a longer cut.
+Tiffany Ethridge 9 weeks is a good time. Really, the breeder should have already done some grooming to the dog by now. So, whenever you feel that the hair is looking ready for a trim... it's time. The first sign is usually that the hair on the snout, in between the eyes, is getting a little shaggy. When you notice that, it's time for a trim.
Hello Jim, I just happened to find your video as I was looking for the best tutorial to help me start grooming my own Cocker at home for the first time. Of all the videos I have watched, yours has been a Godsent! You have done such a beautiful grooming on this gorgious baby! What I like about your grooming is that you leave some length to the coat as compared to many tutorials on RUclips where groomers just clipped down the dog to hardly any hair left. A Cocker should have some hair on him and the work you did on this one is just perfect! However, I have a question for you if you ever have a chance to see my posting: My Cocker is party-colored - Black and White - with white legs and paws. His front legs have been stained due to some licking (I will take him to the vet soon to see if this is due to allergies). The white color has turned pinkish/brown sort of, and for the love of God, I have tried a lot of things to try to remove the stain and get the legs white again. From cornstash/peroxide to vinegar to very expensive blue shampoo and nothing has worked so far. So, would you have any suggestions to offer me? I am desperate! Thank you so much from Canada!
The best thing I've found to keep the white hair white on a parti colored Cocker is a shampoo called "Septiderm-V Bath". A lot of pet stores carry it, and it's also available at the big online pet supply stores, as well as at Amazon.
+Melanie Zhang People who aren't familiar with the many different coat colors that are possible in Cocker Spaniels might easily think that this dog is a mutt. But it's actually a purebred American Cocker Spaniel. What confuses people is the dog's merle coat coloring pattern.
+Jim Zimmerlin oh all the american cocker i saw have longer hairs under belly with longer ears...this one's fur is more wire with shorter ears~~maybe in australia, american cocker is not that common...so cute. and the color is pretty too!
Don't mean to insult but you were making me a nervous wreck in the way you were clipping the inside of the ear...near the envelope. Careful with those clippers.
You couldn't hurt a dog with electric clippers if you tried. Really. You can take the electric clippers and run them directly against your skin and they wouldn't cut you at all. There's nothing to worry about.
+Jim Zimmerlin oh yes you can.. the ear flap can get stuck between the teeth of the electric clippers and it can cut very easily. Happens all the time.
With a #10 blade, I seriously doubt that... and I've been grooming Cockers for 20 years. In any case, Don't let it freak you out and put you off from grooming your own dog. There is no reason to leave this to the pros. Any Cocker owner can easily learn to do this!
My husband and I are both professional groomers and we work together. We can't watch one another work on ears because it's freaky, even though we never actually cut the ears! So it's understandable to feel nervous, but he obviously knows what he's doing.
If you head over to www.zimfamilycockers.com/Grooming.html and scroll about half way down the page, you'll see a list of grooming equipment that I recommend for Cocker Spaniels, and links to buy each of the correct items at Amazon
Actually, I'm sure your dog would do it. It just takes a little bit of persistence and control and eventually your dog will decide to submit to it. I have a very good friend that insisted her dog was impossible to groom because it fought her whenever she tried. I drove to her house with a grooming table and my electric clippers and the dog was actually quite easy to control and to groom. It was just that my friend was timid, and she freaked out every time her dear dog appeared not to like what she tried to do. I was confident and just took control of the dog. The dog quickly cooperated. For a dog who starts by fighting against the whole idea, you start by using a metal arm attached to the grooming table that has a leash which holds the dog in place. I may not have shown that in this video, as all the dogs were easy to control without it. Mostly, though, it just is a matter of confidence of the groomer. If the dog senses your fear, and figures out that you will stop if the dog behaves badly, it will not go well for you. If you exude confidence, and take control of the situation without putting up with misbehavior, it goes as easily as what you see in this video. And when I say control, I'm not talking about being mean to the dog. I'm just talking about being firm. Don't let the dog control the situation. You take control. That's the key to it. For dogs, it's all about pack order. Someone is top dog, the others are not. Whatever the top dog wants, that's what's going to happen. So, make sure that in your house, you are the top dog!

what a cute and relaxed dog! i love this! got a bit nervous when u shaved his private part. haha. i am sure he enjoyed being groomed. look at all that hair, must be a lot breezier for him when u shave off so much hair. :D
You're just getting thrown off by the dog's unusual coloring... because all you're used to seeing is the "normal" colors. This one's a purebred Cocker, but with a coat color you're not used to.
Dresden was sure a nice boy! Thanks for the helpful great video.
He's adorable. I would never have the patience to groom my cocker. Thanks goodness for professional groomers.
Jim you are so nice ❤ Very nice demeanor.

Wow, he looks beautiful. He is very well behaved too, my cocker would never sit still like that if I was grooming him.
Very nice job - you made a rescue dog look like a blue blood again :)
Great video! I have a female cocker that is a year old now. What grooming table brand do you like?
This is a really good one: amzn.to/3cRK6VE

At what age should a cocker spaniel puppy be groomed for the first time? She is 9 weeks.

@@JimZim Thank you so much for your suggestion! I will check it out!
How long does a typical grooming session last with a cocker spaniel? How fast could you do it if you weren't explaining each step?
It does not like a cocker spaniel, it's bit like a mix I think. Does anyone know this breed? I like it very much! Thanks

what number are you using for clipping and when using the snap-on comb, is it the same blade?
What kind of clippers do you use? Everything I seem to but doesn't work😤
