My all time favorite singer. I’m 70 now and have great memories of seeing Sylvester many, many times. He lived in The Castro and I’d see him even at the grocery store. Sundays he and Two Tons of Fun would play at The Elephant Walk in the Castro every Sunday afternoons for a dollar door charge. He’d also appear at after hours clubs where he usually wouldn’t come on until 3am. All of his songs bring back great memories of those wild, drug fueled disco days. Of course sober now. Thanks for the video. 🌈

I rank this up there with Donna Summers I Feel Love as one of the most important and influential songs of dance music. Truly pioneering. I wasn’t alive in the disco era, but when I play this, I close my eyes and I feel magically transported back to that amazing era and I dance with wild abandon. I am free. Ahh, the power of music. “Do You Wanna Funk” is also another great one by Sylvester.

@@therealshadequeen1 This was not WAY before Prince. The recording of For You began in September 1977. Over and Over was recorded in Feb 77 and released in August 1977. And Over and Over while written by Ashford and Simpson was not a hit.
There is absolutely NO comparison between the two.
Also Red Jupiter said Mighty Real was out at the same time as Soft and Wet and he is correct. Mighty Real was released in December 78. Soft and Wet was released in June 78.
Furthermore, Sylvester was NOT a contemporary of Prince. He also was not An inspiration for Prince. Sly Stone, James Brown and Jackie Wilson were. Prince's 1st album was written, produced, and arranged......by Prince. All instruments ........ played by Prince. LOL ..... Even when it comes to voice........ Sylvester's strained, unnatural, pitchy falsetto was like a choking cat compared to Prince. I get people want to honor Sylvester's memory but let's not be dishonest. Sylvester deserves his credit on his wn merits. However, Prince is in a whole different category. Also.... Prince WAS NOT EVER a Disco artist!
While Sylvester may have had some talent, unfortuantely his image and the genre in which he sang...... both relegated him to a gimmiky disco artist.
Of the best falsettos he is not even in the top 10
      Eddie Kendricks
      Prince
      Michael Jackson
      El Debarge
      Bobby Debarge
      Barry Gibb
      Smokey Robinson
      Phillip Bailey
Would all sing circles around Sylvester.
One thing that was before Prince though........ Sylvester was Born in 1947. Prince was born in 1958.

It's been years since I saw that video. Sylvester was a trail blazer who's voice was a marvel to listen to. Patrick Cowley produced many great dance/disco hits including this song. His Megatone Records featured many songs by Cowley including "Megatron Man", "Mind Warp" and other collaborations with Sylvester "Do You Wanna Funk" and Paul Parker "Right On Target". These songs were a house fixture at all the gay bars across America. Afternoons drinking and hearing the songs of Megatone Records in the background brings back lots of memories. Give songs of Patrick Cowley a listen.

Hi Dereck, I just subscribed to your page. The disco era was awesome. I'm glad you are enjoying it. Another great one was Thelma Houston "Don't leave me this way" Try to find the long version. The Weather girl's ''It's raining men" Donna Summer "This time i know its for real" was great. I know you found Karen Carpenter There will never be anyone like her. Her voice was so unique. Her voice was really special It contained some of the most unique tonal qualities. Musically, she had some of the best phrasing abilities. She was able to communicate the lyrics of her songs beautifully. Her voice was truly angelic. "Rainy Days and Mondays" "We've only just begun, "Top of the world" ("Goodbye to love" was awesome, very sad. If you can Dereck look up a little of her bio. She tragically died at 32. She suffered with anorexia nervosa, a terrible emotional disorder characterized by not eating, with an unrealistic view of your body. It affects mostly women. Karen became so thin. She died in February 1983. She left an amazing body of work. Her brother Richard was the genius with his song writing, He was a record producer, and music arranger, who formed half of the sibling duo The Carpenters alongside his sister Karen. I, along with millions of people miss her. I get sad sometimes when i listen to her songs. Dereck i hope
when you get a chance you can react to the songs i have mentioned. Thanks Michael

Another one of his Songs "Do You Want To Funk" was feature din Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Longtime Companion when a Group of Friends from 1981 to around 1987 deal with being the First Generation of Folks to die of AIDS. Jimi Somerville also did his Version of "Don't Leave Me This Way" originally done by Thelma Houston who was signed to Motown although it was written by Motown's Rivals Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. Sadly he and his Lover both died of AIDS.

Yes, some electro happening. Also check out another hugely electro song - also iconic - "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer (1977)

Hi Derek. I really like your appreciation of the power of the dance floor and how entrancing some of these disco songs are. Could you react to "Dance with me" by Peter Brown? It's pretty funky.

Love him, people accepted him, his clothes his voice and he was one of us, they accepted Boy George just a few years later, no we don't have music like this anymore and you wouldn't see a guy dressed like that and sounding like that in 2020, such a shame
