What a great video, very nostalgic. I grew up on Morley road and went to both the same schools as yourself before finishing Leesbrook in 2005. I'm not far from Chaddesden now but it's rare that I'll drive through it. That being said, when I di druve through it always feels like home.
I grew up in Chaddesden and attended Lees Brook between 1998-2003 it was nice seeing familiar areas in your video and I have also returned a few times and visited places I would go when I was young. I was glad to have gone to Lees Brook before it got rebuilt because even at a young age I was aware of the history of the building and I always found it interesting walking around in a school which so many had done so before me. I don't however miss the tower block during the winter as I remember it was always freezing cold with those single glass windows which let all the wind through. I was going through a suitcase a few weeks ago and I found my calculator and thought to myself I used to keep my canteen card in here. Opened up the calculator and funny enough my card was still in there. Its turned a bit yellow but it was nice to see it again and even the calculator still works perfectly even though its not been powered on for over 20 years. I also found a class photo from year 7. I was in 7N with miss temple and it put a smile on my face because I looked like a right idiot with gel in my hair and big ears lol. It was a sad day when we all got split up at the end of year 8 and a girl called Jennifer said that we shouldn't be split up to one of the teachers and couldn't come up with a particular good reason and just said because we're 7N and we've always been together. Like you there were many friends that I said bye to on the last day of school as if I would see them again on Monday but have never seen again since and that's something I regret. Unfortunately my gift in life was to have an exceptional memory so I find myself constantly stuck in the past reliving both good and bad memories in great detail just wishing I could go back and do it all again and correct the mistakes I made. I lived at 37 Canterbury Street and I have so many great memories of playing football on the green and exploring the ponds in the High view school grounds and riding over to Chaddesden wood and doing races around it as if it was some kind of race circuit and also building bases within the woods. I often wonder if kids do the same things today as we did back then, go out in the morning and not return until the sun is going down. No mobiles, no problems just fun and being full of energy every day. When you were walking across the park I thought the video would be that you would eventually bump into your friend but as you started walking on Nottingham road I realised that you were making your way to the cemetery which was very sad, your video is an excellent tribute to your mate.
Thanks for sharing. Incredible that the Tower Block was still standing in 2003! That should’ve been condemned in the 80’s. I have lots of photos, too. At least everyone looked similar, LOL. Reach out to those friends of yours. Might be awful, might be great, but at least you’ll know.
Awesome video...i lived in Chad in the 80s in numerous different houses...Life is short,,,just keep the happy memories in your heart of your friend. I left UK in 1997, and lived in Egypt,Canada, and now in USA for the past 20+ yrs....i often think of UK and miss the fish n chips ❤❤❤❤
I was born and bred in Wilsthorpe Rd. in the late thirties. It was Morley Rd Junior School and Spondon House Secondary Modern for me,the latter, was the largest school in Derbyshire at that time. I had a marvellous time growing up in Chaddesden .I spent many hours playing football and cricket on Chaddesden Park. In the fifties, Chaddesden Cricket Club was one of the top sides in the area and we were the first club from Derby to join the Notts and Derby Border League which was a very high standard. My experiences as a younger kid during the war were memorable and unforgettable including the Gerries dropping a bomb on our football pitch in the park. In my time there, the brook was called Gipsy Brook and I have seen kingfishers nesting there. Thanks for a brilliant moving video.
hello, i left Lees Brook school in 1983,.. and so pretty much all of your journeys in the video i have also been on,.. strangely the same thing happen to me when leaving school at that time, many friends i never saw again, one in particular a lad called simon walker,... simon was a rockabilly one year, then after summer break he came back to school a skinhead,.. great days,.. i often wonderd what happen to him after school,... your video was very poignant sir, when you got to your friends Grave,.. this video was a lovely gesture to your friendship and good times gone, but fondly rememberd. thank you for upoloading sir
I’ve got a family member who lives in Chaddesden, we live in Arboretum in Derby. I think the Steaming Billy has changed its name back to the Wilmot Arms recently. I’m very sorry about your old friend.
I was born in Chaddeson in 1946. I went to Cherry Tree road school. We lived at 534 Nottingham Road until we moved to Manchester circa 1952. I left UK in 1975 and spent 27 years working in Hong Kong, now 22 years in retirement in the Philippines.
R.I.P such an emotional video mate sorry for your loss ❤ he would be proud of you.. don't feel bad for the lost time.. life moves on people become busy.. they will live on forever in your heart ❤️
Brilliant to watch. Be proud of your friendship and don't let the thought of you not getting back in contact eat away at you (your mate probably felt the same). Enjoy your life and thanks for sharing your journey. 🐏🐏🐏
Met a girl back in the sixties at a Corton caravan holiday camp, she was some beautiful young girl, she said she lived in Chaddesdon her name was Ruth Williams, we were both about 13 years old, funny how some memories stay in your mind.
I grew up at no7 & I remember your family yourself & Sara if I am right. It is so nice to see you back in Chaddesden after all these years. The video is well put together and a tribute to choll.
How are your family. My mum Dad & uncle all gone now. I lost my husband Pat to Alzheimer’s in January. I saw one of your other posts and I think I live quite near to Sara I live in Belper now.
I have very mixed feelings about Chaddesden. Chaddesden felt like bandit country when I grew up there in the 70s. The culture was aggressive, angry and, often, random acts of violence, abuse of property and people. Looking back, this was due to poverty and poor education. It was only when I attended Wilmorton College, that I experienced a period of happiness and like minded people. I left Derby during the late 80s and I spent considerable time in the City (financial district of London) chasing money. On the rare occasions I go back to ,Chad', I find it's become wealthier since my time there. The mentality has changed more positively but it still has the 'victim' mindset. It's not just my opinion. On occasion, I bump into ex Derby people and we usually share the same perceptions - strangers or old friends who've moved away. My comments will annoy many, but enlighten those who are driven to leave. My strongest advice is learn; both academically and behavioural (professional) skills. Become driven and get out. For money chasers, align yourself with successful people. You will succeed if you put your mind to it. There's a huge world out there - don't get trapped.
I grew up in that area of chadd too. Went to infants and juniors there, then on to olive ede which then became Lees brook. Many hours spent playing on the park. Growing up then was so different. Not so much technology such as I phones etc. Safe to be on the street till dusk at school holidays. Great times.
I lived my first 5 years on Wilsher Road, in Chaddo. Walked Nottingham Road Cemetery many times, getting there through a “jitty”. Now living in Los Angeles, I miss Birds Cakes. Their cream doughnut, and Apricot & Blackcurrant Creams are the best. Thanks for bringing back memories. RIP Choll.
I lived in Chaddesden, lived on Washington avenue, went to Chaddesden infant school, then the junior school, where we built a monster for the Dr who competition. .I remember Tom Baker wouldn't sign any autographs at the actual competition in Derby, I then went to Lees Brook High school . We must of been in the same year? I was in Mercury at Chaddesden junior school. I was in the school football team. Best days ever!

We’re in Chaddesden regularly and a lot of it, not all, seems a lot less rough than where we are in Arboretum.
I miss chadd I used to live on notts road hanging around Beaufort street and up by the old rocket pub.
Brilliant..used to live in Rupert Road so know the route to Leesbrook very well 😂
Scary jitty at the top of Rupert Road too!

Used to play football with a lad who lived in Chad. He used to talk about a pub called the Blue Boy (I think) in Chad and how rough it was.
