Don't get me wrong - your production values and content is amazing (especially your histories of extinct rides - love them!), but I think your videos would be so much better if you made less of an effort to put on a "narrator voice". At the moment, you're sOUnDinG a BiT, lIkE tHiS, WhEn, YoU'rE TalkING. Edit: Actually I think the weird pauses and changes of tone might be to do with recording very short takes, stopping halfway through sentences.

It's a shame the Sesame Street episode was pulled, since Margaret Hamilton was a sweet, delightful woman in real life but instead she gets remembered for terrifying children. She made an appearance on Mister Rogers that I rember fondly.

Believe it or not in an earlier draft I included a part about her appearing on Mister Rogers, as articles had compared the two, but since in that she was out of character, it seemed an unfair comparison.

Fun fact about the BBC erasing Dr Who tapes, I think Michael Palin of Monty Python heard that the BBC were erasing and reusing tapes, so he actually stole all the Monty Python episodes from their vaults.

I wouldn't be surprised. Both my mom and grandma have told me how, so my grandma was frightened of the evil queen in Snow White when she saw it as a very young, small child; and my mom was terrified of the wicked witch when she saw Wizard Of Oz as a small child. I saw both, probably between the age of 2-4 years old, and I don't remember being scared of either villain, if anything I just knew they were bad and part of the story. No, what terrified me at a young age, was the beginning of Scream..... I think my brother first rented it either in '97 or '98, so I was roughly 7-8 at the time.

It's more a lack of keeping proper archives. Everyone thought that everyone else had a record so they didn't need to keep theirs. But even with home VCRs it was common to re-record over old tapes. And there's few today who haven't erased old material on a drive to reuse the space for something else. Destroying old stuff is just a common practice.

Mr Rogers talked to Ms Hamilton about her Wicked Witch of the West character and that though her character wasn’t nice, but the actress herself was a very loving person. I don’t think anyone wrote into PBS about their kids being traumatized by Ms Hamilton’s appearance.

The sad thing about the missing Doctor Who episodes is that more information has come to light that it is almost 100% possible that some episodes are in the hands of collectors who have NO INTENTIONS of sharing with the rest of the world. Butts.

    • @anthonyellis987

The problem is the way the BBC treats people, but if I had an episode that's missing (I wished I had) then I would gladly share it. Thankfully Mark Ayres saved all the audio/background tapes from a skip which included the interior sound of the Tardis.

It is because they fear losing those copies to the BBC permanently. These are technically property of the BBC, being that they were taken from the studio without permission and once they have them back, they are under no obligation to hand them over to the collector once finished with the data transfer.

That hasn't been BBC policy for a very long time - when the BBC started their publicly advertised Treasure Hunt roughly 20 years ago they made it clear that they would take copies and return the original films to the collector if required. This was certainly the case with the return of "The Lion" when it was returned - the film was returned to Bruce Purchase who sold it later on

another lost BBC episode from the early 50's, was notable because it was a live performance and during a bit where one of the actors was not on screen, He said that he did not feel well and he sat down in a chair. When someone came to tell him he was due to be back on screen in a minute, they discovered he had died. The other actors and the crew had to quickly come up with ways to tell the story without one of the characters. Because it was live, they could not just stop. They had to keep going.

I think the 1950s live airing of the Thomas story "Henry and the Tunnel" is one of the most interesting ones. It was a live broadcast of Hornby model trains, being controlled to go along with the story. In one part of the broadcast, a locomotive came off the tracks, so the person watching saw a hand come down in front of the camera to pick up the train, and put it back on the tracks. Unfortunately, there are no images or recordings of that video.

If you think that THIS video describes the tragedy of missing or erased tapes or kinescopes, pull up a chair. Remember the television series 'Captain Kangaroo'? From 1955-1984, almost 8,000 episodes aired on CBS. With the exception of about 30-35 episodes (some complete episodes, but mostly segments and fragments), the rest of the episodes were either erased, discarded or misplaced. Am I generalizing? No. I have been researching the series for thirty years. It's not as if we can't see 'Doctor Who' or 'Sesame Street' (although some episodes of 'Sesame Street', as I've read, were lost in a fire). Many of those episodes survive. Not so with the Captain.

I've never watched Captain Kangaroo since I was born in 03 and not at all during that time but my mom has recently brought it up. She said she remembered watching it as a little girl in the 60's, I would ask her more about it but it's likely she'd only remember bits and pieces. But she too was wondering what ever happened to it. I think she was trying to find some episodes but she never could.

I had the same feeling when I was young. I remembered seeing a blue Big Bird and all these years I thought I dreamed that. Now I realize it's from the first Sesame Street movie.
There is another show that I also feel I dreamed when I was young but perhaps was a real show/movie. It was about this kid/teen who was trapped in a TV studio. I don't recall anything that happened in the show/movie but do remember the end where he's had enough and goes to his bed and wishes to be back home and, of course, it was all a dream... or something. He does end up back in the "real" world but I can't recall.
I assume I dreamed this but who knows, it could be an actual show/movie and I just need to be reminded.

Another classic TV broadcast that may be lost to time: Joan Crawford's four appearances on the CBS soap opera "The Secret Storm" in 1968. She was filling in for her daughter (yes, it was Christina!) who was on the show and fell ill. By then the show was videotaped in color, and yet considering the big fuss over a legend like Miss Crawford being on a soap, those tapes (or even a kinescope!) has yet to appear. Audiotapes taken off the air exist, but no video footage. There's a rumor that at least one person may have a kinescope in his or her private collection......

While I am rather terrified of the Wicked Witch and would not have enjoyed that episode I believe (at the very least she's scary for her own right without the movie), I wonder a little bit if the reaction wasn't that of parents who may have grown up fearful of her. I know Mr Rogers also had her on with the idea of discussing make believe. This was actually a bit before the Sesame Street episode. I know the witch is merely an act and I've nothing against the actress, but it's the act that has the most effect.

Well, I guess that's sort of what happened in the episode.
I was ten and remember it. The witch was showing off to the viewing audience, breaking the fourth wall, so to speak, and said, "look, no hands!" with the broom, so that was how she lost it.
David was the one who either caught it or found it, and Maria was who he spoke to.
The witch came to Sesame Street and demanded her broom back and David wouldn't give it to her until she said 'please' so the witch left and changed herself into a sweet, little old lady, ta-dah, Margaret Hamilton.
This was when I realized she had been the witch as well, and it was truly like the same character from the '39 movie.
So Margaret walks into the store, asks David if she can have the broom and David made her say please. Don't recall, but don't think he did, if David knew it was the witch or not.
She goes outside, turned into the witch and took off.
She's flying again, did the "look, no hands" bit again and dropped the broom again.
David is standing in front of the store with Maria and the broom falls in his hands. He mimics crying on his shoulders and she pats him on the shoulder to comfort him.
Don't recall her interacting with any of the muppets.

I remember back when I had obtained a coveted workprint of the unaired, and banned episode of Ren and Stimpy, "Man's Best Friend".
I was so proud to have gotten my hands on it, and it was my favorite episode for years, and I even helped spread it around to a few people by taping it onto other VHS tapes for a few fans that wanted to see it as well, and mailing it to them. Incidentally that's how it also ended up online as far as I'm aware. I even kept it locked up in a bottom dresser drawer under key and lock for years, watching it every so often.
.............then Spike TV aired it several times, and Paramount included it on a DVD.
It was a huge bummer that my copy was no longer considered to be quite as special and the value of it was gone.
But I was happy to finally see it in better quality, and for everyone else of the mainstream R&S audience to get to see it, too. So I wasn't upset for long.

    • @the-NightStar
      @the-NightStar 5 лет назад +1

and as far as how I obtained it? Well, I don't want to go into too much detail, but let's say that I knew of a source that mentioned a certain disgruntled Spumco member did leak it around to them, when they were pissed that Nickelodeon refused to air it. I did not have the direct contact with said person or anything, and I can't claim that I did, but let's just say it was... ahem... passed along to me, as one of only about 3 copies at that point, and of the three or so that ended up in possession of a copy, I was the least inclined to just sit on it forever. I don't know if the other people I gave it to were the ones who leaked it into the internet or not, but I imagine that it was because of me, and I was/am totally ok with that.

Here's an interesting fact about one of the most famous motion pictures of all time, Gone With The Wind. While beautiful restorations have been repeatedly marketed, they aren't exact restorations. In 1954, as part of producing a widescreen re-release, a few shots were cropped slightly and cut into the original negative. So all copies made since, even the ones not formatted for widescreen, are missing a bit of the image. An original uncropped print may exist in China.

The reason that we have only 96 episodes of Doctor Who and also many, many more classic programmes (Dads Army and Z Cars for example) missing believed wiped is that it was a slow process of deciding which tapes were commercially sellable. The day they went to check how much of Doctor Who was still in the archives, the cans with all the episodes of 'The Daleks' were taped up to be destroyed.

There's exactly *one* episode of the 1,225-episode run of "Dark Shadows" that is lost. It takes place in the final season, and contains the offscreen marriage of Bramwell Collins (Jonathan Frid) and Daphne Stoddard (Kate Jackson). The episode was entirely lost until a fan turned up a copy of the soundtrack, which has been combined with on-set stills, added narration, and a couple of scenes from other episodes to "reconstruct" it for the syndication and home-video packaging.
Missing show I'd like to see is the single aired episode of "Turn On", George Schlatter's followup to "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In", which was canceled halfway through its premiere. As I understand it, the episode exists but has never been made accessible to the public since its original broadcast.

There's a hungarian tv series, titled as "Gustav". It was a 120 episodes long cartoon, starting from the 1960's and it spreaded pretty much in the eastern block, because - if anyone takes a look at it ~ the characters didn't speak, no dubbing was necessary.
Years ago, a lot of episodes were submitted here,on yt. But there are 10 episodes, which even I, a hardcore fan never got to see. The local film archive is just lazy to digitalize it, meaning it might just get lost. And I searched everywhere, but couldn't find the eps online, sadly. I wish one day someone just submitted them!
