The shock mount system used in the Beta 58A is a different design from what’s used in the SM58, and it does not require the grille to act as a shock absorber. Therefore, the Beta 58A can use a hardened steel windscreen without risking damage to the cartridge.

The design engineer of the Unidyne III element, Ernie Seeler, wanted to make the grille of minimal size in order to minimize the acoustic effects of the grille. Generally, larger grilles have a greater effect on the polar pattern and frequency response of a microphone. Using a threaded attaching method would have made the grille substantially larger and would also have necessitated making the grille out of metal. In fact, the subsequent model 548 was essentially a Unidyne III element with a threaded metal grille. The grille of the 548 was somewhere in between the SM57 and SM58 in size. Although the model 548 was in the Shure catalog from 1968 until 1980, it was not nearly as well received as either the SM57 or SM58 or even as well as the 548 or 565. The fact that the SM57 remains as popular as ever probably attests to the integrity of the original design.

I cant get it from the sm58 that i drop a lot in 20 years works perfect but i cant get the grill loose it's stuck ? any suggestions thanks
