Do EXHAUST TIPS change the sound? (I cut mine off to find out)

- In today video we find out just how much exhaust tips change the sound! Every vehicles exhaust may be different but here is a side by side with and without tips on my truck!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
The type of metal changes the tone too.
Where did u purchase the 6" tips I need this one!!!!!!!
Great example! The larger the tip the lower the tone! No tips, higher pitch but a lil louder. 😃👍👍
I dont agree with that

Lmao how? Apparently you didn’t listen when he was placing and removing the different tips in the video you watched. He literally proved it in this video.
No tips was def louder when driving, but tips sounded deeper and a hair louder at idle. Crazy how something so simple can change the sound
I think the tips helps making it louder at idle cause it can actually resonate inside the tip. Vs when driving it’s pushing through the tip a lot faster and it won’t be echoing inside the tip as much
Just seeing this video the casual "no tip gang" had me rollin😂😂😂😂😂😂
Both sound absolutely amazing, it’s kinda hard to decide which sound I like more 😂.
Big tips hands down lol
@@campbell0162 you like big tips huh?
@@cia6911 don't we all
@@floridagirl386 🤨
Truck sounds better all the way around with tips.
No it didn't 😂
The results make sense to me. Like comparing the sound produced from a tuba to that of a trumpet; you can get the same about of "volume" out of both instruments, its just the Tuba is way deeper in tone. Also the sounds each individual can hear, depends upon their ability to hear certain pitches in general. Some people just can't hear higher pitches as well as others. Great video!
Definitely seems louder without tips, but the look of big tips is 100% worth it and i think they have a better tone to
Ask the neighbors. They'll have a good perspective.
Yes for sure put them on Larry I would love to hear it
They are called "resonators" for a reason. The sounds resonates in the tip altering the sound. Larger the circumference of the tip the more the sound resonates, aka a deeper quieter note. That's why it sounds louder with no tip.
Tips are purely aesthetic.
Best way to think about it dynamically, A Megaphone, horn style speakers or even the flute/trombone, an air horn or train horn. The larger the step up from the exhaust pipe to tip will make it louder because the sound is being defected outward (Boomtubes in NASCAR) and bouncing back onto itself and the larger diameter slowing down the soundwaves making sound deeper. smaller diamter would be faster hence a higher pitch noise. (a car widow slightly cracked on the highway) Obviously there's diminishing returns. But if a Diesel is a single 4" thats why they run 6-8" tips, trying to get a deeper tone. Or with mine a single 2.5" with a Y split dual tip at 3.5" There's also a point where it starts looking "cartoonish" and a 8" tip looks well, wrongly proportioned.
Long tubes and big tips on Larry
I was debating on whether to run big tips or not lol. Perfect timing for this video to be posted 😂👌
Literally same here 🤣
Outstanding video. Definitely appreciate the work you put into this video. Great job brother.
Hi, Great video. I have been doing exhaust mods for ever. One thing to tale into account is that it is not only the type of tip, but that you also gain more and better sound by shortening the exhaust tail pipe. That is why when you cut them off and leave it like that, it sounds louder and raspier. Good job!
Hi I have a 98 4 runner and it had new exhaust put on but my son who drives I more said that if he got a larger muffler tip on it would make it sound cooler. I was told that the tip now is only a 1 3/4 ? And on runners their usually like a 2 3/4 I guess opening. Would u suggest this change of a tip would make it sound different. Ty
I’m genuinely shocked that he thought that removing 18” of metal from the exhaust would somehow make it quieter. Lol 🤦🏻♂️
Definitely put the big boys on Larry and do a comparison
Long tube headers straight pipe back to those tips on Larry all day
Tips. For deeper and richer idle sounds. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾🔥🔥🔥
When you talked into the tip and the end was awesome.
Be nice to know how it affects a standard exhaust system, because with/without, it still sounds amazing
I noticed that bigger tips make it deeper
I like the no tips. Sounds 👍👍 Big tips are for diesel trucks not gassers.
Larry for the win
Long tubes and "highflow" cats on Larry with the 6 inch tips would be cool to see. I was going to go get my y pipe cut out and run ture duals on my 2011 5.3 with 7" tips but now I may stick with my 5" tips I have both sizes the 5s are on it now and the 7s are in the shed
My 5s were so easy to clean I have 8s now and it’s hard to keep em clean 😂
I had 2 1/2 inch pipe true dual straights to 5x12 tips and changed to 6x18 tips 2 days ago and it’s so much deeper and I love it best sound in my opinion (on a 5.7 liter Chevy)
I have 2.5 inlet to 4 outlet 18 inch on my 5.7 tbi with a glass pack and I’m going to upgrade to 6 inch outlet. The 4 inch sounds deep and amazing but just curious what the 6 will sound like. Plus the looks also will look pretty cool I think also.
Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! Long tube headers, high flow cats and true dual (no X) on LARRY!!!!!!
Actually this helped me a lot! Just what I needed- I drive a diesel tho😂 just gonna go with an 8” tip. Also, for the love of god, thank you.. for not having the Carolina Clap exhaust😭 I actually moved because of it, got rlly tired of my tinnitus ringing like hell every time (im 19💀💀💀) id drive bc them guys are everywhere, and all of them got that clap sound that I hate😂
Larry needs long tubes and high flow cats and them tips!
I like the sound with the tips I gives it a deeper sound.
Yes put them on Larry fix
High flow cats on Larry
Definitely headers and and high flows on Larry
Yes please put them on Larry
I wish I could find someone that does videos on 4th gen 1500’s like you😂
I’m thinking he should get a ram next🤔
Sounds good no tips louder. The smaller the louder its gonna crack more
Random fun fact:The ground actually quiets your exhaust by QUITE A BIT.
So to your credit, it very well could be louder because of how its cut.
The angle of the exhaust tips are definitely another factor. My 2001 F-150 5.4 has 3.5" diameter tips with rear exit. My brother at first put 5" tips with 45 degrees exit on his old truck, a 1998 F-150 5.4. It was noticeably louder than mine. He then had it changed to an axle dump with 6" tips, which made it even louder.
Axle dump will be louder because it’s echoing off of the hard ground and bouncing around under/against the truck also
Love the comparison, has so much great info. Still curious how the difference in tips would affect my V6 truck though.
You were right...there's a better rumble down low grumble with the bigger longer tips.....now try this, put a 4 inch lolly pop in the bigger tip, about 4 inches back inside.....the bigger tip. Then tell us what you think!!!Nice truck......
Personally, I like the throaty sound with the tips on. I was looking for that deep thunder/bass sound on my F150 but had the chincy 3.5 flowmaster clamp on tips that came with the American Thunder cat back. I have redone the entire exhaust and made it true dual with an x pipe. I had a Magnaflow TruX muffler on it...ehh. I put a Borla ProXS muffler on it with 4 inch tips and finally got the sound I was looking for. The flowmaster tips were 2.5 ID and flared out to the 3.5 OD. These 4 inch tips are 4 inch from the pipe to the opening. Huge difference!
Go with turn downs right under the bumper with some high flow cats. Sounds so much better.
I belive the bigger tips gives it a deeper sound. I like the deeper sound
My dad has a 1987 f-150 with a true duel exhaust with glasspacks and a 3 inch exhaust tip and it’s pretty loud
Yes headers on Larry! 🤤
Put the big tips on larry
Tips give it more of the deeper rumble sound
I think big tips richen the sound. I have true dual 40 series flowmasters on my OBS. I had 4 inch tips and I liked them. The sound wasn't deep enough. I upgraded to 5 inch tips and the tone got deeper and I fell in love all over again.
I agree, I went from 5 to 8 inch tips and it had a deeper, throatier tone to it
You have 5inch by 18inch?
@@croomrider9785 Yep yep
Yup put them on Larry with headers and high flow cats
Headers and the tips on larry
Larry needs the tips our terry I love to see it on both
I personally love the sound of tips
I had true duals with no cats no mufflers on a 14 Chevy 5.3. At first I had 3 inch tips. It’s much more raspy and maybe even louder. Then I went to 8 inch tips and it was just wayyyy more deep
I want straight pipes no muff or cats. I will try that with 4inch
Basically the tips give a deep bass sound. More of a rounded, full bodied sound. No tips is raspier and sharper.
And better?! Just opinion
Awesome video bro. Appreciate it
Honestly as long as a bigger tip doesn’t negatively effect the sound then who cares? They look sick!!!
The big tips sounds good !!
Tips sounds sick no tips not so much
Quad tips are the way to go
No tips was louder but with tips it has a better sound
I wonder how age factors into this. How many guys over the age of 40 think it looks and sounds better with the oversized tips? Twenty plus years ago I had a couple trucks that I put four inch echo tips on...thought it sounded good. The best part was constantly having hangers welded up from additional weight of the tips. It was kind of like having a band at the rear of the truck...the rhythmic ta-ting, ta-ting, ta-ting of the exhaust rattling mixed blub, blub, blub of the exhaust note.
Bro thank u! I was having a big ass debate whether I got tips or not but u just answered my question thank u!!!
I like the more aggressive No Tip sound. I run Super 10 w/ no tips with turn downs on my 14 Sierra
Put headers on Larry for sure
Definitely the tips look and sound better!!
Headphones don’t lie haha love it!!
Put them on Larry
Definitely sounds better with no tips
Man it’s awesome that you made this video, I just ordered a 6” TSO exhaust tip for my truck yesterday!
From what Ive seen larger exit makes it deeper and usually a little quieter. I’ve tried a 3” then to a 5” tip for quieter in my 5.3. My buddy had a 3” tip and went to an 6” tip and it was super quiet but deep.
Great video!!!!
I have an idea to propose. So, when you force large amounts of air thru a large hole, it makes little noise. BUT, if you forced the same amount of air thru a small hole, it makes a ton of noise. Maybe reducing it by an inch would create the most sound?
Tips definitely make it better
There is that if exhausts ends before bumber the sound can come to your cabin. If the car is like SUV or something like that. I don't know if that goes side by side on the pick ups.
Like the aggressive sound of no tip
Nice comparison I honestly don't think chevy makes a good sounding engine but It gave me ideas for my ram
makes me miss my home in Bama
Bro I lost it when you were like 4in to a 6in
I blame cats with being loud. My truck straight piped with 3” tips is a completely different sound than a 5” inch tip 3” sounds like a muscle car 5” claps
Pls put headers and high flows on Larry
I think with no tips it sounds more like an old school Chevy… but I definitely love the sound of the big tips better!!!!
i personally like it without the tips
Without the tips it reminds me of a mustang
It's a little deeper with the 6 inch tips but I think as far as the tips the 4 inch seemed louder
I would go with the big tip
No need for 6” long tips
You need 6” shorties
Yeah, I’m looking for a raspy exhaust popping sound I think without the tips will be the way to go to get that close the fact that
big tips sound best
I think I heard more pops with the tips on
Love your channel and videos and trucks chase big fan of yours 🤟🤟🤟
Smaller tips are louder actually
X pipe kills sound
I like them Double H boots, brother! I have the same kind!
The dogs broooo free them
It's already the end of Summer, next year I'm gonna get some exhaust work done on my Camry. I'm getting a 2.5 inlet tip from K-Tuned and just before I store my car this year, I'm gonna delete the resonator. The tip I'm getting for the exhaust exit is 18 inch long and it's going to be sitting at an angle sideways.
100 percent different style and size make difference
I just bought a criwn vic with no cats and straight pipes. It sounds heat but it's got big tips on ot and I haaate the sound of echo chambers. I'm gonna cut them off and put a set of single chamber mufflers in their place.
