After watching this program I went out to look at my trucks exhaust. Mine looks almost new, except for some dirt. It's a 17 year old Tundra with 190K on it.
Manufactures switched to 400 series stainless steel many years ago, Aluminized steel will also rust just like 400 series stainless steel will rust. Muffler shops use mild steel because most do not own the expensive equipment it takes to bend stainless steel pipes. If you really want the best exhaust Borla is the one you want, they use T304 stainless steel, that is the very best you can use for an exhaust and it is also the most expensive.
Over 22 years ago now I bought a 304 series Complete 4” system for my LB-7 2002 GMC SIERRA. It STILL looks almost as new as the day I installed it in my driveway back then. It was $720 back then , when most of the non -stainless 4” systems were less than 1/2 that price, but I feel it was plenty worth it in the long run . The old “ you get what you pay for “ holds true in most cases. Plus it sounds killer . The company was “ Hog Industries” but they went out of business not long after I bought it , probably because of the price . Too bad……😕. Anyway enjoyed this video , thanks.
It’s called scavenging not back pressure! To increase your scavenging you install a smaller diameter pipe to increase velocity but then it’s not as free flowing but if you go to big then the exhaust slows down reducing the scavenging effect so you need to size your exhaust properly for the horsepower you are putting out!
Correct. I have found on my factory 350 and 454 a true dual 2.5 inch exhaust with either no cats or high flow cats with a good muffler makes them very happy. Not too big and not too small.
I think I'm having issues because truck 2500 has the two pipes coming from the front of the truck then goes into the muffler but only one pipe come out of it. Does that sound right
This is an entry level video for people who know little to nothing about exhaust. Using industry terms and technical jargon is going to get people leaving the video immediately. This video isn't for people learning science from Albert Einstein. This video is for people who are looking for the bill nye explanation.
Back pressure is the atmosphere at sea level pushing down your exhaust system at 1 Bar or 14 PSI. If your engine can't overcome that problem with valving it will stop even though the intake uses the same pressure. Excellent video, the bubble analogy is perfect, I'm gonna use that in my brain from now on thankyou.
Inlet nipple rusted out on a Spintech and a Magnaflow, within a couple of years. Autozone turbo has lasted 6 years, still good. 2014 Silverado 5.3. Sounds great.
Very helpful. I believe my 2015 Ram 2500 is a turbo back. It’s straight pipe and I would like to go with a full 4” pipe instead of the 3” for better air flow.
I build thermocouple I work with everything from iron, 304,310,316,330,446 to Inconel it will all rust. I recommend buying your muffler and tips and going to a custom shop to build the rest of your system it can be cheaper and like with my ram I wanted true duel with a x pipe

I have to disagree with you about header length. Long tube headers are generally much better for low end power. It has to do with the negative pressure wave traveling backwards up the header tube to the exhaust valve. When this wave arrives as the exhaust valve is opening it helps to pull the exhaust out of the cylinder and in turn pull the fresh intake charge in. The longer the primary tube = the longer for this negative wave to arrive at the exhaust valve and thus lower rpm.
You can do this with regular house paint too, preferably latex. Don't worry the internal combustion and valve action will atomize the paint. Also there's the added benefit of increased compression from internal paint layers. (Funnel, brake booster, entire f*"kin gallon of house paint.)
My Chevy 2003 4.3 Astro had a pretty free flowing Thrush muffler on it, and although I am an 80's Kid, I just couldn't take the loudness any longer. I had a stock muffler put back on it, and the power increase was quite noticeable. So, I guess I was NEEDING some back pressure added back in? It ran fine before, but better now!
The aluminized steel is already coated before the exhaust tube is made and yes it’s a tube it’s measured from the OD, not the ID like a pipe. And it’s nickel and cadmium with silica, also the stainless is manufactured the same way, it’s coated when the rolled steel is made.
Quick question: What is the difference in sound, etc between muffler+resonator delete+ straight pipes and tips vs muff+reson delete and "dumps" like after/behind the cab?? Whats the difference, what do you recommend?? Thanks.
304 stainless can become slightly magnetic over time with high temperatures. I know this to be a fact from my experience from testing metals at scrap yards with a PMI (positive metal identfier) gun. I've tested hundreds of pieces of 304 that a magnet would stick to and the majority of this stainless come out of heat exchangers. Even 316 stainless would be magnetic sometimes depending on how hot it got but a magnet would just barely pull on the 316.
Look up videos of the car you want with diff brands of exhaust, then look up vids of your car with x pipes, H pipes, catless, straight pipe, just type in anything at that point. Save all videos into a custom playlist and research write everything down
If youre planning on running headers on a 2wd where the steering shaft is alot lower. Please for the love of god make sure the steering shaft doesnt rub, because you will suffer tremendously if you dont
Back pressure does matter. There is such a thing as too much "free flow". There have been many Dyno tests done with different exhaust setups and bigger isn't always better when it comes to exhaust pipe for HP.
1) it's usually below the truck 2) it's made of metal 3) it makes things louder or quieter 4) never put an aftermarket exhaust on a V6, unless it has a turbo too 5) they can be shiny and not shiny
My 2021 Trail Boss has an exhaust flapper valve. What is the purpose of this, and is it needed? I wanted to just do a simple "budget" exhaust, replacing my stock muffler with a Borla ATAK, and not sure if that flapper needs to stay on or not.
A T304 SS exhaust is extremely expensive, but it’s the last one you’ll buy. Unless you go changing shit that prevents it from routing and hooking up the way it did originally.
Ingot an 04 titan with a magnaflow cat back. It's got some miles. No leaks or holes but when cold. It makes a clap sound under load high rpm or when cold even lower rpm. What would cause it I don't believe any leaks or holes.

Good video, not building anything crazy just want an exhaust and intake for a 23 ram 1500 Limited. Isn’t it true that it makes no sense unless it has a tune? The manufacturer designed it a certain way, that changing these components could actually decrease performance. There’s more airflow with an intake and exhaust good for the engine without a tune? The airflow sensors are calibrated for certain amount of airflow, might not be worth doing anything.
If you don’t have a turbocharger in the vehicle don’t worry about shit like tunes 😂 especially on a slow ass ram 1500, get the exhaust and a high flow cold air intake (not K&N they’re trash) and focus on the sound , you ain’t seeing any performance benefits on a naturally aspirated motor. Once you get a diesel or something with a turbo is when tunes start becoming important

I have a 07 f-150 you think I could buy a borla performance exhaust dual catback and then buy short tube headers and run it off of that like could I do that or would that work?
I've got a 08 sierra SLT with the 5.3... I usually have them cut the muffler off and run true duals from the front all the way back just leaving the converters on.. this time the guy had a really nice muffler which has a decent sound to it but not as deep as I'm used to.. it's still a true dual from from the front back but it's now run into a dual in dual out muffler!? Is that still considered true duals ? Is it hurting the flow like that ? Should I take it off and run like I usually do? I've never had a dual in dual out muffler. It has a nice drone to it but not as loud and I like a little pop and crackle with the deep sound of the way I always run it.. should I go back to the way I used to cuz this is hurting my flow or what? Any info from anyone would help.. thanks 🙏
A dual in / dual out muffler is best for performance as it throws both exhaust banks together and helps to balance mismatch in backpressure from bank to bank as your drivers side exhaust is longer than your passengers side. And it does mellow out the sound which you don't care for. 5.3s are hard to get a lot of sound out of with the 2 cat set up and especially the dreaded 4 cat set up.

Yeah you need a spd downpipe and Corsa Cat-Back exhaust sounds really good on an EcoBoost sounds like a diesel.
@@TheAjm2500he can do it on a V6 but he needs in depth knowledge of sound/pressure dynamics and whatnot, gotta know how to deepen sound and resonances and pipe diameters, not gonna give out any free info tho that’s what google is for
Sulphuric acid ,is produced in the fuel burn. So you do not want the exshaust to exist not under the vehicle
Factory exhausts are stainless
Ya they must be most of them have a 7-10 yr warranty on exhaust
No offense nick, but I think Lawson is a better host. I just like his sense of humor because it’s more like mine.
Germans exhaust will never rust , the Exhaust from my car is 37 years old ....and still the first one ....on a diesel car....
just get the catbacks on the V8 & call it a day !!
You’re wrong about the factory, putting mild steel exhaust on original exhaust is stainless steel
Yeah exhaust is very simple for me because it’s all the same 3 inch pipe with a 3inch in and 3in out cherry bomb extreme from jeggs to a 5 inch black tip and paint the exhaust after it’s bent then a sheet of paper is all you need to paint the welds and if you want less seen just get 3.5 inch pipe axel dump it less seen and less cost
Diesel sorry y’all are at the mercy or epa and dealer and voiding warranty because I’ve never seen a dealer deny stuff so fast is when a diesel does anything outside of banks exhaust banks cold air and lift
Yo I got a 01bmw E39 530i and I got CATLESS HEADERS AND STRAIGHT PIPE with dual tips but wanting to get a deeper rumbling sound what u recommend a resonator or free flow muffler?????
@@fckyoutoobe your kinda already where I’d be other than a muffler of your choice
Most bmw owners are using straight pipes or cut out flap switches closed for city neighbors then open for rural and tracks.
I'm just looking to tone down a tiny bit and deepen sound
@@fckyoutoobeif you wanna do that you gotta know how sound design works.. not gonna give you any free information but start doing your homework on pipe diameters and deep sound, length and deep sound, x pipes, etc
409 only lasted a year before I started seeing rust. It sucks cause now that my truck is lifted you can see the rusted exhaust.
They call that Chinesium...
Spray it
@@thetimetraveler1427with what?
@@modernbassheads5051 lol sand the rust off and spray it with rust coating protection
In California, mild steel will last a very long time. I still like stainless but 2-3 year on mild steel out here is no where near an accurate statement.
A louder exhaust may not equate to more power or efficiency. That’s a confirmation bias.
Use 316 stainless
What kind of a exhaust system would you suggest forward 1988 Chevy k1500 350 V8 throttle body long bed.
2” true dual straights
@mikecesario8880 ok cool thanks for getting back in touch with me. Was thinking about 3 in dual exhaust would that be better than 2" or what would the difference be?
@@alancarter8573 I happen to have a 1989 Chevy k2500 350 v8 long bed myself, if you’re planning on running real true duals DEFINITELY go 2” pipe, you’ll need it to make I little bit of back pressure to keep your low end torque, and 2” sounds FAR better than 3”
Why not just spray some of that bedliner stuff?
Most important thing.. make sure it comes out from under your vehicle..
