      Out of all of Jon's relatives I really loved Jon's grandma the best! Here she took the time to save the dinner from becoming a disaster thus saving Jon from utter humiliation. I also liked the part in the Christmas special where she was telling Garfield about her late husband then how it touched her heart when Garfield gave her her old love letters.

    I met Desiree Goyette at a show last June and asked her about Garfield’s Judgement Day. She told me not only was the story considered too dark, another factor that prevented the movie coming out was that Davis got into a lawsuit with CBS over the rights to Garfield because CBS started demanding more money when they learned he wanted to make a movie. The lawsuit cost Davis a lot of his own money at the time, and doing a movie ended up being unviable for him. It’s a shame studio politics prevented it from being made. Hopefully the Alcon Entertainment Garfield movie that’ll come out in a few years will be better than the Bill Murray ones that came out. It would be a surprise if for the Alcon Entertainment movie, Jim decided to give Garfield’s Judgement Day another shot!

    • @melissacooper4482
      @melissacooper4482 4 года назад +12

      It's rather odd that the excuse was that Garfield's Judgement Day was considered "too dark" for it's audience. And here in the existing TV specials there were some scenes that was considered dark. Like the panther in Garfield In The Rough. The harsh reality of an animal being put to sleep because he is over the time limit in Here Comes Garfield.

    In my opinion, Garfield’s Christmas is a underrated holiday masterpiece with a simple yet very enjoyable story and many memorable characters, especially with Jon’s family. If anyone has seen the nostalgia critics other top 10 Christmas list, he says “if you ever have grown up on a farm or knew anyone who grew up on a farm, then you know these people”. Completely agreed. And the animation is really good with its cartoony style. An absolute underrated gem. Plus that scene with Garfield and grandma on the rocking chair is the highlight of the special. That scene was even reanimated after its original airing, with the original version not showing the picture of Jon’s grandma and his belated grandpa. This year, I’m thinking of making a top 10 list of children’s holiday specials for adults and this is easily in my top 5. Rating: 9/10

    • @demon0981

      I not gonna lie, that scene hits me emotionally. My grandpa (on my mother’s side) passed away when I was a little kid and years later, both grandparents (on my father’s side, mostly due to cancer) passed away. I have only my maternal grandmother left. I miss many of my relatives and wish my family could have a reunion so I know who is still around.

    I am not surprised that "Garfield in the Rough" won an Emmy due to the music and surprisingly dark nature of this special. I never had associated Garfield with actual heart-pounding action scenes when I was little, due to its mostly cartoony, often snarky humor. It's still one of my favorites to this day.

    I watched and read a lot of Garfield as a kid. I remember renting the DVD collection of the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas special as well as the first two CGI movies and a volume DVD of Garfield and Friends from the now-closed Hollywood Video. I also remember watching the first live action film in theaters, especially the Ice Age short at the beginning.
    Currently, I own two DVDs of Garfield and Friends ("An Ode to Odie" and "Dreams & Schemes") and a scratched up DVD of the 2004 film. I also watched episodes of The Garfield Show on both Cartoon Network and Netflix. For books, I own the first six volumes of the comics.
    I am looking forward to the new movie, since the director of Cats Don't Dance and The Emperor's New Groove is directing and Jim Davis is producing.

    I still have yet to see some of these specials like "Babes and Bullets," but I think my favorite Garfield special for now has to be "His 9 Lives." I absolutely loved the idea of telling multiple stories for Garfield, and it provided much creativity with some of the segments having their own art direction.
    Besides that, I also liked the Christmas special for Jon's family and all the heart surrounding the grandmother, and the one where he reunited with his mom. I even liked the Thanksgiving special for the gags, Liz's snarky moments, and the grandmother coming in to save the day.

    Here's two random Garfield factoids for fans out there:
    1. Did you know Winnie the Pooh almost got the role of Garfield? No, I ain't pulling your leg; the late great Sterling Holloway volunteered for Garfield in his first ever special in 1982! Man, wouldn't THAT have made for a different special! Still, I'm almost glad it went to Lorenzo Music, as it catapulted him into not only stardom, but also one of the most recognizable voice actors to ever live!
    2. And speaking of Lorenzo, he actually guest-wrote for a few of these specials, particularly Garfield on the Town, where he collabed with usual writer Jim Davis.

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin 4 месяца назад +1

      I love Sterling Holloway, but I just don’t see him being a cynical and lazy character. I listen to his voice and it just doesn’t sound like someone who could inhibit the personality traits I’ve just mentioned. His voice just conveys a friendly person persona, almost like what you’d hear from an old nextdoor neighbor or an old acquaintance or a grandfather. So Lorenzo Music was definitely the better choice for Garfield.

    • @joinmarch76
      @joinmarch76 4 месяца назад +1

      @@hunterolaughlin Oh, I agree. Much as I love Sterling's work, his voice just doesn't fit the role Jim cultivated back in the 70's to early 80's. Lorenzo'a distinct, sarcastic voice was perfect for the part, it's no wonder he stuck around as his voice for so many years. RIP, you magnificent feline...

    One of my favorite Garfield books (although I didn't read a whole lot) was "Camera, Lights, Hairballs! Garfield at the Movies!". I used to check it out all the time in middle school. If you don't know what it is, it's Garfield's takes on movie genres, from Sci-Fi, to teen, to action adventure, and at the end they made a joke with X-rated movies (as in, they put a censor bar over the two pages). They even talked about the process of making the two live-action Garfield movies. I *long* for the day I can finally have the book to myself, as well as a few others.

    In Garfield in Paradise, there are 3 references to old time radio star Jack Benny and his show:
    1). The room they stay in is the JACK BENNY SUITE
    2). The records listen to be the tribe were Phil Harris records(Phil was Jack's band leader on radio for a long time
    3). The man at the hotel and the car rental place is voiced by Frank Nelson, known to drive Jack nuts....and vice versa

    My obsession with Garfield is the comic stribes.
    When I first read one, I can't resist reading another one. And before I know it, I've been reading for hours.
    Also "Garfield's Babes and Bullets" starts to intrigues me.

    I like Here Comes Garfield which has the song So Long Old Friend which it is a sad song about Garfield losing Ode when they were in the pound. Also the special where he finds his mom and his family and then gets into trouble with a cat gang and his family fights them and then they don't want him there.

    I've got half the animated specials,the 11 Fat Cat pack books,the whole animated show,several Garfield dolls,Murray's Garfield movie(underrated),several specials books including Judgement Day.Personally I think it could've been great as Garfield's a good fit for dealing with a tornado,Sesame Street did something like this once.Disney backing off due to the story is hypocritical.Look at all the violent deaths in their movies from Bambi to The Tarzan.Garfield is one of the greatest strips all time because of the humor and the joy he brings with none of Jim's opinions thrust onto us like Doonesbury,For Better Or For Worse,or Peanuts,etc.,have done.He's here to be funny and has been for 40 plus years.

    My personal favourite would be Babes and Bullets. I'm a fan of the black and white Privite Eye films or episodes, and with Garfield around, I just enjoyed watching it over and overs again! You also made some strong points to why I love it! 8( E3
    My second favourite would be Garfield and his 9 lives. I really like his take on his history. It was cool, weird, dark and just good to watch with all the art styles compiled!
    I also love Garfield goes to town. It was heartwarming to meet his family (or cousins basically) and his mother. I also love the Claws song!
    ALSO: Disney refusing Garfield's "Dark Film" when Disney has dark moments in their movies themselves? Uuuuuuuhhh... you know kids turned into donkeys to be sold right?

    #10, #9, #7, #6, #4, #3, and #2, were one of my personal favorites as a kid along with the original Garfield And Friends once that too was my true Introduction to some of Garfield's adventures along with chilling out at Orson's Farm most of the time as a kid. TO me IT's truly been awhile and I still one of them can come back unlike the CGI Version nowadays and maybe another go with the series just for ol' time sake and capture what made 4th wall breaking a think before both Pinkie Pie and Deadpool toke over. Now If you excuse me I got a big pot of Spaghetti ready to go and gonna enjoy this special lunchtime!

    I know it sounds crazy. For the halloween special. My dad had a theory over the old man in the house. And I actually believe it. That when he's telling the ghost pirate story to Garfield and Odie.
    That the old man was possessed at a very young age by the Cabin boy of the Pirates. And because people thought he was pretending. The cabin boy felt like his story wasn't being heard. So, he tells it all to Garfield and Odie. About how the pirates, the blood contract, and gave them warning. And as a calling card stole their boat to say. "Now do you believe me?" At the end of the episode the ghost of the ten year old cabin boy is at rest. And the man hosts his tv show.
    It was odd, but it made the episode amazing.

    So you're telling me the same company who gave us plenty of dark elements throughout their features (in addition to green lighting Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hunchback of Notre Dame) said that Judgement Day was too dark? I don't think I'll ever understand how Disney functions logically.

    I gotta disagree on the spookiness level of "Garfield Halloween". I remember watching its television debut when I was 4 years old and was absolutely terrified by the old man and the skeleton ghosts towards the end. To this day those scenes still creep me out a bit. oh, nostalgia.
