Mario games aren't just for kids. They're for all ages. The best Mario RPGs have had writing and stories that could be enjoyed by both little kids AND adults. A story doesn't need to be overly complex for it to be engaging.
I'm convinced that someone at IGN's wife cheated on them with somebody that made brothership. Because from the reviews I've seen and the game play yeah it's not perfect, but it didn't deserve the low score that IGN gave.😅
I’m at hour 53 nearing the end of the story and i like it. Not sure what everyone is on about and I played all of the games except paper jam because I got bored of it very early on
the same IGN that ranks wukong bad the same IGN that thinks concord and dustborn are good if anything , IGN not liking is a seal of approval that it is gold nay, not gold , it is mithril
My personal conspiracy is that Nintendo didn’t pay for a better review score so IGN picked a reviewer who clearly hates turn based RPGs and goofy cartoony characters to give it a low score
I think the rating of IGN should be 7 out of 10 which is one score below of Super Mario RPG remake. IGN didn't gave it a chance especially rushed that one without spoilers.
I think this game is just a bit flawed. The IGN score felt like it was done for clicks and harsh, but it did offer some valid criticism which I feel is a bit of a shame since the game was hyped up to be a return to form. With that said, i have had fun with the game. It is very easy to pick up and play, perfect for the switch! And overall I just enjoy the rpg style of the game and the fight mechanics, which keep me thinking on how to beat each different enemy type.
Despite the critic ratings, I wasn't really too worried about them before getting into the game. Mainly worried about how much people would buy into purely the numbers and not the actual criticisms, which many are valid. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and my main issues were with pacing of the story towards the end (which I won't spoil), but the finale does pay off beautifully in a way I've not seen done as well in previous entries. The performance was overall fine, though I noticed Shipshape Island was most vulnerable due to progressing the story as more changes are added to the crowd/scenery. Hopefully it plays better on the Switch's successor, and hopefully still, more people give it a chance because the franchise is still really good. Before the last 10 or so hours, the game was my favorite in the entire franchise having played it for nearly 20 years now. This was brought down by the pacing, and my rating lands somewhere between 7.5 to a low 8, nowhere near 5. So while it's my second favorite game behind Bowser's Inside Story, Brothership truly is a charming, special game of its own that feels like a new beginning this franchise has sorely needed. Even with fears about sales right now, I have little doubt we'll get a new M&L game again someday, I'm just hoping it can be as close to this in visual and gameplay quality with the criticisms addressed. The combat gimmick was super fun and I loved it more than the Battle Card System in Paper Jam, which was that game's saving grace.
Honestly as a dad with little time to game this is a good one for a brain turn off before bed. One fight in tactics ogre then an hour of this is going well at the moment 😂
Im sorry but I loved that game it was very fun ran fine for me story was fun isn't that games r supposed to be lol gamers have lost sight in the point of what video games r supposed to be worry to much about graphics and fps it's pathetic.
I thought the game was good. Was it jaw dropping and completely shattered my expectations for a video game? No, but very few games do nowadays. I can appreciate the length because as far as i know this is the last mario and luigi game we'll ever get. Im not sure where reviewers are coming from when they say "lengthy tutorials". I cant recall a time when a tutorial lasted longer than a minute and a half. Most of the time, youd get just text boxes explaining what was going on for the first time something occurs but after that its tucked away in snoutlet school should you ever need to reference soemthing.
I swear I will never get the AI. Luigi is bad apparently! Acting like this game is Luigi is like an MPC 00 if you want to talk about a MPC try talking about Bowser inside story!!! I mean Luigi Billy does anything you can’t even make him wheeled his hammer!!! same like the other Mario Luigi games!!! THE GUY IS LITERALLY JUST MARIO’S NPC BROTHER GOING ON A MISSION WITH HIM at least this game tries to make Luigi have somewhat of other things to do. Then Just follow Mario around like his sick puppy!! My point is that in superstar saga, through paper jam Luigi’s basically what they criticizing think about it like Luigi probably gets involved in some of the attacks or overworld abilities throughout the game when they’re not doing that what is Luigi do? LITERALLY NOTHING!!! Just follow Mario around stairs at his back and occasionally reacts to stuff happening just like brothership’s Luigi who basically does the same thing except he didn’t get sent to do some minor things like Luigi logic! Why are people so mad? You don’t have to send him to do anything. You know the same thing with Luigi jumping over a cliff by himself first of all if you’re complaining about this, I want you to ask you something how many times did you have to restart an entire section? You didn’t click the right time? Hmm? How many times did not cause get stuck and forced to jump down… yeah that’s what I thought anyway, that’s my criticisms
I've never played a Mario & Luigi game, but it does look fun! The only reason I haven't bought it yet is because I'm still finishing up Zelda EoW. Still looking forward to it.
Ive laughed my ass so hard off at 2 jokes Spoilers When mario and luigi were disguised and luigi casually takes hes disguise off to drink something made me laugh so hard and then just moments after they say an paper mario joke not as funny as the luigi thing but still made me laugh
the bit that had me laugh out loud was the statue in Twistee Island that the Great Conductor had sat upon. Don't think I've seen a butt joke that well visually-represented in a Nintendo game before.
3:40 "The first gripe that people bring up is the writing, now... it's a Mario game, people! It's supposed to be enjoy by children as well." Well I agree wholeheartedly. Nintendo games should be graded on a curve. Let's think of the children. 🙄
It's not bad but it is badly optimized! the frame rate is absolutely garbage very inconsistent and can't hold 30fps properly. Loading times are way too Long and many more issues
I personally think everybody is being too critical about this game. Its a mario game ITS MADE FOR CHILDREN TOO Yall gotta take a chill pill ngl This is too much and its kinda coming off as ungrateful to the devs who poured their hearts and souls into this game. In short Do better
My problem with the writing is that everyone who isn't a villain is way too nice... but in the boring way. They're all wet blankets. Even Snoutlet, the one they tried to make sassy, is only ever mildly sassy at most. The game definitely tries to have a bunch of character moments for their minor NPCs... but they more often than not just feel... I dunno... lame. Like, it tries to be sweet and wholesome, but just ends up feeling like an episode of the care bears. Which usually isn't a problem in classic Mario RPGs. I'm nearing the end of the game and none of the NPCs have managed to get me invested in them, despite trying very hard.
This Russ guy didn't even listen to IGN's valid and factual complaints about Brothership. The IGN reviewer clearly had experience with previous Mario & Luigi entries. Brothership has generic and bland music, generic islands, bland Concordia character designs, approximately 10-13 frames of horrendous input lag, 30 FPS (60 FPS mods don't fix the input delay issue, either), unskippable dialogue, unskippable and drawn-out cutscenes, bad movement, no option to select combat options with the B button as Luigi, an AI Luigi that hardly functions properly, and unnecessary loading screens. These are only a few of many issues that Brothership has.
I really wanted to grab it but seeing the poor performance turned me off. Same with the new zelda game. Ill wait and see if they offer improved performance on the switch 2.
Finished it a few days ago and yes the game is very flawed unfortunately. From the music to the pacing and performance. IGN is IGN I don’t care but I like that they gave it a perfect mediocre score of 5 instead of the typical 7 (a score of 7 means basically nothing at this point). The game has problems enough for a 5 and it’s annoying to see how people argue against it just because they don’t wanna see it.
I personally don't have an opinion on the writing but nobody seems to be saying that the writing is good, just defending it being mediocre. I'm gonna play devil's advocate by saying that "muh kid's game" isn't an excuse for mediocre writing; Bowser's Inside Story targeted kids, but everyone loves the writing in that game.
Wow the game sounds like total trash to me. Glad I checked this video before I wasted even more money. I got a 3 year old who loves to Game, AstroBot is his favorite, game, it's really odd that a game like that can be for everyone, and a Mario game can't even keep a 40 year olds attention.
You know that asking this question already is a clear sign that the game is not good. Stop lying to yourself and agree that Nintendo is scare to make any interesting stories there days
I feel like they lost a lot of the plot with what made Mario and Luigi feel like Mario and Luigi. Luigi just feels like an NPC for the sake of streamlining things that made the series unique, not to mention the muscle memory frying decision to make Luigi select battle options with A (a small point but imagine suddenly having to accelerate in Mario kart with the Y button 😵💫) that’s my biggest gripe. Also do kids not deserve good well written humor? Do kids not deserve effort in writing? That argument treats kids like joke dumpsters where we can throw shitty jokes in when they deserve better. I don’t mean for that to be an attack, but I’d be a remiss not to mention it. Great video ❤
Have you played Mario & Luigi Brothership?
yes first few hours are boring but it gets very good in the end
I want it for Christmas
Yep, my favourite game
Yes.
I love it
It's my first mario and luigi game.
And I love every bit of it
I haven't bought it and played it yet.
I'll play it in 2025
Before Pokemon Legends Z-A releases.
You know, IGN making weird reviews for games on purpose for publicity makes a lot more sense.
i mean thats what they did with sonic games until recently
Playing Brothership right now and it is fun AF. All games don't have to be complicated so much that only 14 year olds can play it.
Being a longer game is a confusing point to, the more value i get for $60 the better, as long as the majority of that content maintains good quality.
Totally agree!
I know right!!!! Several people have said that the 10 hour or so Mario RPG was the perfect length…..why on earth don’t I want a 40 hour game?!?!
Mario games aren't just for kids. They're for all ages.

also gave sticker star an 8.8
I love this game and it has left a stamp on me.

So 7/10 - bad game
8/10 normal game
9/10 amazing game
Thata the ign standards
I think this game is just a bit flawed. Im 30+ hours and loving it. The ship navegation reminds a lot of the train in spirit tracks

Finally a Russ Vandy video on this game
I swear I will never get the AI. Luigi is bad apparently! Acting like this game is Luigi is like an MPC 00 if you want to talk about a MPC try talking about Bowser inside story!!! I hate that facts my comment is highlighted....
I've never played a Mario & Luigi game, but it does look fun! The only reason I haven't bought it yet is because I'm still finishing up Zelda EoW. Still looking forward to it.
HMMMMM… I WONDER WHERE IVE SEEN THIS THUMBNAIL TWICE BEFORE
😅
"The humor is serviceable and well done for the series."
Have you played another Mario & Luigi game or a Paper Mario game?
IGN gave it a low score because Mario was not reimagined as a Troon.
Ive laughed my ass so hard off at 2 jokes
Spoilers
When mario and luigi were disguised and luigi casually takes hes disguise off to drink something made me laugh so hard and then just moments after they say an paper mario joke not as funny as the luigi thing but still made me laugh
the bit that had me laugh out loud was the statue in Twistee Island that the Great Conductor had sat upon. Don't think I've seen a butt joke that well visually-represented in a Nintendo game before.
Remember. IGN gave Dragon Age: The Veilguard a 9.0
Better than wonders story 😭
I don't rlly trust IGN anymore
Amazing video btw🎉🎉

Beat it 30 mins ago.
7.5 or an 8 is fair. Has some serious pacing issues, backtracking is pretty bad, but everything else is solid or better.
As a gamer, I do not notice any frame rate drops.
Mario and Luigi aa a UFO is actually pretty creative. :)
It's not bad but it is badly optimized! the frame rate is absolutely garbage very inconsistent and can't hold 30fps properly. Loading times are way too Long and many more issues
i find the mini battles a bit repetitive
I personally think everybody is being too critical about this game. Its a mario game
ITS MADE FOR CHILDREN TOO
Yall gotta take a chill pill ngl
This is too much and its kinda coming off as ungrateful to the devs who poured their hearts and souls into this game.
In short
Do better
And the rating of the game said E for Everyone.
Your take on the game is somehow worse then the ign take
Noooooooooo definitely not 🤫
Too much water

IGN IS BAD PLEASE STRIKE ZIFF DAVIS
I would still buy it but still
Play The Smurfs Dreams please 🙏
I love the smurfs dreams!
Does it run better than sonic frontiers on switch is the question
It does lol

You didn’t even play Brothership so why are you even trying to crap talk a game you didn’t even play?
Not my favorite in the series, that goes to Dream Team! Then Paper Jam, then Brothership. All games in this series is a 7+/10 imo
This game took me 43 HOURS TO COMPLETE. The pacing sucks.
Wow the game sounds like total trash to me. Glad I checked this video before I wasted even more money. I got a 3 year old who loves to Game, AstroBot is his favorite, game, it's really odd that a game like that can be for everyone, and a Mario game can't even keep a 40 year olds attention.

What exactly is wrong with the writing in the game? Because I bet you’ll never even be able to explain how the writing is bad even if you try to. lmao
