Nissan GT-R Track Pack v Porsche 997 Turbo S - /CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS

  • It's been raining in England for the past 6 weeks, so this is a damp test. The GT-R Track Pack seems a bit half-hearted and, on-paper, the 997 Turbo S is the closest rival. I went to an evening track event at Brands hatch to discover the differences/ work out if the Track pack is worth the extra cash.

True, but if there is someone out there who could afford to, then I think anyone is capable of affording both these cars as well, even if it might take a few years of working hard. I feel if someone is able to afford a Nissan GTR and its maintainance and upkeep as well, then they can figure out how to up their income to fit in the Porsche somewhere down the line as well. Maybe thats just my way of thinking...

Chris, there are dozens of online "road test" shows with hosts that can't put a car into a controlled slide if their life depended on it. YOU are the only one who has mastered hooligan driving while effectively conveying the actual experience to your viewers, an unprecedented talent. Your track test of GT3 RS vs. M3 GTS vs. C63 AMG was pure excitement, period.
You know what to do, keep the tires smoking!

    Dear Harris Monkey.
Please disregard the comments about your drifting cars at insane speeds and having a good time.
I for one subscribed to your channel because you actually can drive and have fun doing it.
Please don't change for haters they didn't get you into cars or on Drive in the first place, and will eventually talk crap after you get booted for being watered down.
Do you bro, do you and let the haters ride coach, on the hate train that they can't get off.

MOAR SIDEWAYZ!!! :-) Chris, don't let the peanut gallery discourage you from your gift as a hoon. Not many reviewers can do what you do in a car, and although I'm a racer myself and greatly value seeing lap times and some "serious" laps without all the sliding, I also enjoy seeing you drift because it does say a lot about the balance of the chassis and the car's general ability to put a smile on your face.

the seating position in a Porsche is superb. I love the seating feel of the Cayman GT4 and love it over my 2015 GT-R for sure but the power delivery in the GT-R is better from a stop (Of course) and out of corners as well. But the Porsche Feels way Lighter and just as easy to keep in line but without all the weight you feel in the GT-R The Eight of the GT-R does feel safer at speed though whereas the Porsche and most Porsches feel like at any moment you could spin out and die like other light weighted super cars. Nissan should make the next GT-R (R36) with maybe 200-300lbs cut out of it, so that with a driver and a passenger it was 3,800 lbs , it would be awesome! and maybe lower the seating postion as well

Why comparing these 2? I'll never understand, sure, they both are 4WD, turbo and have 6 cylinders, but they have nothing more in common! The GTR is build for track use (despite it is only efficient on track for short use.....) and the Turbo is more a GT car, far more comfortable, luxurious and versatile, drive them or take a ride in the passenger seat and you'll understand what I'm saying!

American: BIG, not the best in quality but at least pretty good value for money
Japanese: Efficient, reliable, and always trying to be the best in terms of technical, lacks of soul and fun though.
German: Solid made, high quality interior, precisioon engineering, but could be pricy.
British: Charismatic, traditional ( Doesnt mean conservative), random in terms of quality and technical.
French: Unique, most (Not all) are likely to be soft cars.
Italian: Emotional, but not the most advanced

That used to be the case back in the 60's and 70's, but today a live axle is not as bad as it seems. The GT500 comes from the factory with a panhard bar and a torque arm to keep the axle planted, which actually makes it very comprehensive on a road course, and helps it put down power well. Also, it's not THAT bad on the bumps, its certainly not as good as an IRS. I know this because I drive an 02 Mustang GT and I road race it. :)

Chris DO NOT listen to people complaining that you drift too much and drive "sensibly".. By all means, indulge in bad behavior. A lot of people can drive a car purposefully and set fast lap times, and yes a lot of people can drift well too, but the it is a heck of a lot more interesting to see cars at the limit going sideways. Maybe somewhere in between will please both extremes? Great video nonetheless. Thank you for what you do Chris.

IT IS an automatic, because it is AUTOMATICALLY engaging and disengaging the clutch without driver input. it's just that it has a double clutch system as opposed to a single clutch torque converter.

Ah, but it's about two years' worth of rain in said six weeks. It's been silly dry and most of the UK is under drought. This week - and I checked this with a friend who lives there - the weather in Arizona and in Surrey are much the same, the difference being in humidity (higher in Surrey). I like the rain - and rain is good for racing, it's half the fun of the Belgian GP, the best F1 race on the calendar. If it was just hot and dry the whole time, we'd be like dried prunes and very bored.

At the same time, the GT3/GT3RS is a car one would only use at weekends. The Turbo could be your only car - with the more road-biased setup, it's quieter and more comfortable, it's more tractable thanks to the low-end torque and it can cope with all weather conditions short of two feet of snow. The GT3RS would simply have spun off if driven as hard in such wet conditions as above.

  • @12389h

The GT-R is a little more tail happy because its engine is at the front, whereas the 911 has the engine in the back, keeping its rear tyres more planted on a damp circuit.

Because we want to hear what Harris has to say about the cars. Plus, they're not exactly fire-breathing noise-machines. The 997TS especially is very quiet in the cabin and from outside - those big turbos do rather kill the sound compared with, let's say a 997 GTS, which is basically the same engine minus the turbos. The GTR is noisier and accordingly we hear more of it.

I think they are both by far not as good as the brand new Dacia Duster. (will be available from the 1st of November) It actually has 3 petrol options and Diesel.
The GTR only has 1 engine option (with or without any) and the same goes for the 911. Besides the duster has a grippy 4wd system as well..

Mizuno-san has always said that he will constantly evolve the GT-R. Even if its a bit better thats a huge success and to be honest it is an engineering feet to one up the previous iteration. Therefore, marketing excercise or slightly pointless? maybe, but worth it, yes to those who care as much as Mizuno-san does. Fantastic video as always. Wednesday is the new weekend.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the quality and luxury of the car, which the Porsche has much MUCH more of. They are both great cars, however there is a big difference in what they are meant to do. The Porsche 911 Turbo S is meant to be as fast as possible on twisty, real world roads while still being as comfortable and refined as a Mercedes, while the GTR is meant to be as fast as possible on twisty roads period.

  • @Misfiring89

Sorry but that's a bit wrong. It is true that paddle shift gearboxes can automatically shift gears but "automatic gearbox" usually refers to touque converter gearboxes. Dual Clutch transmission is within their own category (DCT for short) and so is automated manual (single clutch gearbox with computer controlled clutch). If a DCT doesn't have an auto shift function you won't call it "manual" either.

I sincerely hope you guys know that a Nissan GT-R is a performance tool and nothing else. It just shows through the car that it was built on a budget and is really not a complete package. Just the NVH in the GT-R compared to the Turbo S is ridiculous. People who say they'd rather have the GT-R over the Turbo S probably haven't even sat in both of them.

Porsche is not overpriced. However, the R35 V6 3.8L Twin-turbo engine originates from R34, the predecessor, which uses the I6 2.6L RB26DETT engine. The old Skyline GTR is also AWD and with rear seats of course since it was came out from the Skyline series.

Because they were probably under priced when they originally launched. They now have a very firm foot hold in the market, and the car is respected like crazy everywhere. So they realised the new model can be sold for more, and it is definitely a better car. It hasnt added 20K of value in terms of parts, but the car now fits better into the price range

but anyone saying that Harris hooning a car around doesn't show the true capabilities of the car is off their rocker...
true capabilities? what does that even mean? for some of us the most fun to be had behind the wheel, especially on the road, is getting a fistful of opposite lock and sliding as smoothly as possible. when it comes to road cars, I am more interested in how controllable a car is in oversteer situations than hearing about one-off lap times

we say the same thing in different terms i think.
if you have a suspension silent-block broken, you obviously will fail the tuv test because it is a matter of safety right?
but for this silent block to break on a 3 year old car, it means that it is not reliable (unless it was crashed, which would be obvious under the car anyway)
and the same goes with any key part of a car
thats why i say reliability and safety go together

mOnKey never mind the comments - every halfway capable car enthusiast *knows* that drifting is the most fun! Keep the good stuff coming, great job!

I stand corrected. I wish I could update my posting. But you must admit that Brits do make quirky cars. I loved my Triumph Spitfire and 955i motorcycle. The electrics on British vehicles are enough to make you insane.

I'm not in the "wanna league", I can afford it. What I wrote was I would rather take a GTR than your 930. I'm not even a fanboy, I switched from the Nissan clan to Audi. I just have a ton of respect for the GT-R. It's crazy what they have achieved for a 100k car.

For a future video, how about an episode on Caterhams and what makes them so special?

doesn't really matter that he's a bit off, several magazines got different times, rule of thumb for these cars is about +- .3 seconds

Great video ... Love both cars (... and have one of them). The GTR was developed and made to be a competitor to the Porsche Turbo, so a good match in cars to compare and test. They are very different and that is OK. Each is was it is, and they are great ... both of them.

In the world I live in, the turbo s is faster than the GTR. That being said, Chris made another excellent review

Screw the haters, drive the cars to their limits. If you have to go sideways to figure out how a car handles on the edge, so be it. This seemed too calm to be Chris Harris.

    Awesome as always Chris!
Such a shame your relationship with Ferrari has perhaps, cost us some variation in the cars you're driving. But, still great fun from start to finish.
