  • 'Mark and I return to a beautiful farm permission we got last year. The brick house was built by a revolutionary war soldier in 1775. The trees around the house are incredible. I don't think I've ever seen bigger. This day we did a little exploring out in one of the massive farm fields. It was a full day of digging old coins and relics. A couple of the coins are head turners! We gave everything we found to the owner.

I can't imagine taking finds from a detectorist. The finds are special due to the process it took to find them, they mean almost nothing to the homeowner unless they are something personal. I could see wanting pictures of the finds to add to the story of the property, but unless a valuable treasure is found I can't imagine taking all that stuff from the person who found it.

I might be prejudice to the comment because not only do I detect but I had a home owner do me dirty. One permission I had was an early pre Rev War homesite in New Jersey right where Washington's army chased the British from Trenton on X-mas to Sandy Hook where they escaped by ship. All of the surrounding farm fields around this home site produced a ton of Rev War relics that suggested either a skirmish occured or troops camped over night in that area. After we had an amazing few days hunting the property next to this and the farmer who allowed us to hunt saw everything we dug was offered to see everything we dug in case there was something he could trace to his family he was amazed at the amount of activity that happened there but he didn't want to take anything from us because he made a great point which I often bring up if I try negotiating permission. He said his family bought the property in the mid 1800's so he has no family ties to anything from the colonial era so he didn't want to take anything after we spent so many hours (days) detecting. A few weeks later his neighbor called and asked if we wanted to hunt his property. Well that's a no brainer. When we showed and while talking before we started they did tell us they wanted any artifacts they can trace to their family who fought in the "Civil War". I told them that there were NO CIVIL WAR battles here in New Jersey. While it isn't common we do pull CW US belt plates and bullets like Minnie balls and musket balls which are a smaller caliber. He said OK anything questionable as in it's from the Rev War or 1812 we can figure out a split. That's a broad statement but in the deal we were allowed to keep all coins, split the relics from the Rev War and/or 1812 and C.W. era finds were theirs with family related stuff like engraved rings or engraved name plates and such. After a long day of digging a crap load of everything including garbage we all showed them everything. Well instantly there was NO split on the Rev buttons and a small wreath buckle half missing the tongue half. My friend offered to give them something if he could keep the wreath buckle because he's never found one. The guy got arrogant and wouldn't let him keep it. Then he asked to see the coins we dug and as he was looking at the coppers and a Spanish Reale he said he feels it should all belong to him for the historical significance lol. Historical significance my ass anyone could've dropped those coins and it could've been years after the war. My buddy who already lost his wreath buckle right then just had a Jersey copper, a Fugio Cent and a toasted KG2 with a couple indians and Barber quarter also taken and he lost it. He said we just handed you Rev War relics some people will never find or see in person handed to you just for owning a field that your ancestors didn't settle on so it's not even possible that your family has any ties to any of these things and now you want the coins that anybody could've dropped even somebody who didn't live there. The next thing I know they're arguing because he's mad as hell being we shook hands on the deal that we at the very least could keep the old coins that we pretty much knew we were gonna find and split the relics and just that fast it turned into we wasted a whole day busting out butts off digging probably 500 holes for nothing. So the next thing I know he says you want it "you greedy b*sr*Rd" take it. He grabs all of the trash out of the truck and dumps this massive pile of crap that we all had dug out on the driveway where we were talking and the owner started yelling get that f'en sh*t off my driveway and get the F off of my property!!! Wow things went from zero to crazy in seconds. So I pushed him towards to truck because I didn't want him to totally flip and wind up in jail and we left without taking any of HIS property as he insisted. Two days later we were detecting the field on the other side of him when here he comes with the police wanting to talk to us about dumping litter on his property. But before the police followed up behind him towards us the guy tried to get that property owner over to throw us out. I explained the entire situation pretty much how I just explained it to the police and the officer said we did the right thing because had we taken his property (that garbage) we would've been stealing his property once he said he wants to keep EVERYTHING we dug. It was a way the cops took our side without saying the cops took our side. The farmer next door said we're good to go and he walked away and he went back to working on his equipment and we hunted all day and the next day and had two great days hunting there and that farmer didn't care what we found and we offered to show him everything and he said I don't want anything from you guys "I have enough junk in my driveway" HE WAS MAKING A JOKE ABOUT DUMPING THE JUNK. Then he said it would still be in the ground rusting away if you didn't dig it up. After we thanked him as we were leaving on day 2 and he said he was talking about what happened there with another neighbor and he said he told his other neighbor that he'd rather we find out they have a Karen next door then he did lol 😳 at the time I didn't know what a Karen was but I just laughed and went along with it. Well we live and we learn.
If I was a content creator I might think about it but I'm never hunting another property again to find things for some selfish person. I may look for a lost ring but I'm gonna make sure they agree not to care about anything else I may find and not show them I'll show them pics and tell them about it later 🤣

I want to keep everything I find unfortunately when you are on someone’s property it is all their property. I always start off with if I dig it I keep it unless the value is great enough to sell. I never offer to show everything just anything of great significance. I decide if the value is great or of significance. If the owner wants to do the digging they can borrow my extra detector and have at it lol. When a property owner wants to keep everything I let them by leaving it in the ground.
The exception to the above is when looking for lost items or detecting a historical site.

I am honestly at the point where I only care about rare or bucket list items. I give about everything to homeowners unless they don't want it, most actually don't. I do have 1 place I have dig for years that I happily give the owner everything. Doesn't bother me, I enjoy digging it, then giving back also!

Gotta give you credit for being willing to turn everything over, 100% respect. Years ago I made an agreement with a homeowner, house built in 1730 in Acushnet Mass- I'd show him everything and we'd sell and split anything of value. Of course I found a Pine Tree Shilling. Hundreds of people questioned why I sold it. Like you, I gave my word, done deal. Merry Christmas men!

I’m from England, but my father’s side of the family have been in the U.S. since the early 1700’s, my 5th great grandfather, was a major during the Revolutionary War, and a well known cabinet maker from New Hampshire. I’ve seen one of his pieces on Antiques Roadshow, worth over $80k. We also have copies of land grants for service during the War of 1812.

I used to “door knock” I always struggled with the first words to say because the majority of people didn’t care about keeping the finds. I would say right away that I don’t sell anything that I find, I’m not here for the monetary value of the finds, I’m here for the history of the finds/location. I lived in “Washingtons Crossing” Pennsylvania and our subdivision was actually inside the state park where metal detectors are not allowed. So I always offered land owners a view and if it was an issue, I left them with the property owner.
You guys are always so courteous about what you do, I can’t see anyone having any issues with the group.
Nice to see Muck’s new kicks, it would seem that he intends on continuing the hunt.
Happy and safe holidays everyone 🎉❤.

The brass piece is called a "stand-off" and is part of the lightning protection system, as you guessed. I noticed that the LP conductor was flopping around. You can hammer in the stand-off and crimp the little metal tag end around the conductor cable to hold it in place. It's pretty common for the cable to get yanked by a lawn mower and pop the standing cable off the tree. I'm an Arborist and have hammered in my share of them.

Fortunately I have not had to "give up" anything that I really felt strongly about, but it may happen and that is what it is! Its the agreement and you gotta stick to it. Thanks for being an honest detectorist. After plodding through miles of paddocks, using expensive metal detecting machines and your added experience of years, you find treasures that would end up rotting in the ground. In the instance of your 2 cent coin, it’d be so easy to not show it on video and just stick it in your pocket, to take home.

It always gets to me when a land owner wants ALL the finds! I don’t mind giving them the best item or even half but to allow the detectorist to keep part of the finds is crazy! They would have nothing to show if it wasn’t for the detectorist! Our time our $1k worth of equipment but I guess I’ve just been lucky and never had anyone request all or actual any of the finds but I do take and item found that’s not trash and make a shadow box of it and take it back with a thank you card so maybe that helps me.

Maybe the home owner is creating the complete history of the property and framing the finds on the wall. That would be cool. I guess either way they belong to them. Have a great day and Happy Holidays to you and yours

MY GUESS ON THE BRASS SPIKE IS A HOLDER FOR LIGHTNING GROUNDING WIRE FOR LIGHTNING RODS. LOOKS LIKE IT HIT SOMETHING HARD AND IT TURNED THE POINT AROUND. SINCE THOSE BIG TREES ARE GROUNDED THAT'S WHAT PUTS ME ON THAT TRAIN OF THOUGHT.

I believe the piece that you called flim flam is a broken engine valve.

That first find you have in your hand I found the EXACT same one about a week ago in Easton MD detecting. Very unique look to it. Let me know if you have any luck identifying it!

Can’t wait to watch! Just wondering, do you not point the camera up as much because the homeowners don’t want you to show their land? Or is it another reason? I oh like getting a feel of the surrounding and where you’re detecting! Thank you for the video have a good one!

id say the way its filmed is 100% for privacy. For one, it keeps your viewers that may live close by you from being able to find your permissions. Also in the same sense, it keeps the land owners from being hounded by potentially hundreds of calls and door knocks of people trying to get permission.. id imagine if I was bothered like that, a fence would go up with a sign to prevent anyone from coming or even asking.

I wonder if the curved copper was a tool to hook and close buttons on boots in the past.

That piston was actually either an exhaust or intake valve from an engine

Hey Curt- are you going to give us a report on the legend? I own one and like it but after you've been around the block with Garrett (my first detector) and then Equinox and now playing with the legend for you friend that works for Nokta, I'm curious to know where you'll land.

I know you do it for the video, but we would NEVER agree to give away all the finds! My buddy Roy found an 1887 $5 Gold coin and I found a George Washington Inaugeral button. What if those had been found on that kind of site? Not gonna do it!
