Wisconsin is known for its history of dairy production, the Green Bay Packers, and being generally less boring than many of the Midwestern states (I’m looking at you, Kansas). Wisconsin is also home to Minneapolis, St. Paul & Saulte Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line) L-1 Class 2-8-2 “Mikado” #1003, built in 1913 by the American Locomotive Company. The 1003 is currently the only operating example of Soo Line mainline steam in operation, based in Hartford, Wisconsin along the ex-Milwaukee Road tracks of the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad. The engine is kept in immaculate condition under ownership of the Steam Locomotive Heritage Association, and while it doesn’t operate often in public, the group makes sure to impress the many trackside fans every time. This video focuses on the 2022 Trains Magazine Soo Line 1003 charter, which operated between Randolph and Horicon, Wisconsin and featured many trackside runbys with a freight consist. Now, please enjoy this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on November 13th, 2022.
That opening shot was great! Good vid Chad, gotta make it out there and see 1003 one day!
Thank you for so many clips without the whistle. The sound of the locomotive itself is a joy to behold.
Very nice work, that’s definitely something on my bucket list to see
Wow these shots are awesome! God bless!!
That's quite the Buick they had there. Also, I bet that takeoff at 4:30 had to have been loud in person.😂
Great Video!
Very impressive pacing video, I always enjoy seeing footage of Soo Line engine 1003 in operation and especially while hauling a freight consist.
Beautiful production, very well done! (Dave).
Beauteous!
Awesome video Blue Comet Productions!
Very nice work, Good vid chad.♥️👍👍
The engine looks good, shiny, clean. Nice to hear the start-up and passing by the cam. Interesting to think of the force begine the stack gas. It goes straight up even though other steam leaks etc, is being paid flat by with. Note also the gap between the top of the stack and the first indication of steam condensate. That steam is under a lot of pressure and still well over 212* when it leaved the rim of the stack. Less whistle nonsense and more heartbeat would be nice. By the way, Is this a revenue run or a bunch of derelict cars being towqed by an engine remembering the old days and the glory of steam on rails. The magic carpet on rails of steel. Very nice camera work.
Happy 110th birthday soo line 1003
Epic
That whistle sounds like the one which was on the MILW 261. I'd read that they switched whistles on the 261 recently; is this the one?
I wish 1003 would pull passenger excursions
