Add a small dab of “Locktight” to your mirror bolt, it is available in different versions the blue locktight I believe is what your looking for! Take the bolt out completely ad a small dab on the treads , reinstall
Interesting ! I’ve actually got bar ends on my 2022 T120. I changed mine. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think they’re designed to continually do that all the time. Personally I wouldn’t advise it. I’ve never seen anyone continually do that. I seek your point of view and the nice channel guy. NZ
I have the 2018 Speedmaster. The discoloration on the engine covers is because they have a clearcoat finish. The aluminum is not corroding, it is the clearcoat that is scratching and discoloring. I replaced all engine and valve covers with the OEM Triumph chromed covers. No problems with the chrome covers - but you have to like chrome. I also replaced the stock seat with a custom Corbin seat with backrest - a vast improvement over the stock seat. I tried the Triumph OEM Longhaul wind screen but it caused too much buffeting so instead I added a Dart Flyscreen which works well. I have two other cycles, a 2010 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad and a 2008 Yamaha Royal Star Venture. I love all 3 bikes but if I could only have one bike it would be the Triumph. The Speedmaster is one sweet motorcycle.
Thanks for that, it is good to know 👍 Very pleased it isn't the aluminium corroding!! I am looking into getting them powder coated. I was going to get a Corbin seat but it was a little over budget at the time. They look beautiful and very comfortable. I do get some buffeting off of the screen but not enough to bother me. It definitely is a special bike, I am loving mine so far. Cheers
My T100 engine covers started corroding. I bit the bullet and used Autosol, sorted! Polished up well and seems to last 6 months or so before requiring attention again.
Good review. I have T120 Bonnie with the same bags as yours. I solved my luggage problem by purchasing a set of LOMO waterproof bags (very inexpensive if you live in the UK). And I use them when I need more room. They look good, are likely twice the size, if not more, of the Triumph bags, and come off the bike in seconds when I get back home and return to my smaller bags.
Thanks I appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the review 👍 Nice I will take a look at those bags, I love the standard ones from Triumph. Just too small capacity for long trips etc...
I’ve always love the triumph I got my first one in 1964, love it. Also have had Harley Davison’s and gold wins motorcycle that is a Honda M/C . But went back to triumph. I’ve been riding them around 39 yrs. Now after seeing the new triumph Bonneville speedmaster I’m thinking of buying one.
🙌 A true Triumph veteran!! I am yet to own a Harley Davidson but sure I will one day. It would certainly take a lot to take me away from my Speedmaster, love it 👍 Highly recommend a test ride on one! Cheers
I really love the bike! I've had my 2018 Speedmaster for just 4 months now and I'm loving it to death, I commute to work on the bike more than my car these days. I actually did change the handlebars though. Not that I don't like the swept back beach handlebars, but I decided to go with the black high handlebars and then installed some bar end mirrors. I like having my arms more straight out rather than sitting low. And it completely transforms the look and character of the bike. It still retains it's British roots but it now looks more "British American" so to speak. Cheers from Houston Texas
Hi Thomas, great to hear you are loving your Speedmaster as well 👍 Same I use mine any chance I get!! Fair enough I also love the look of the mini ape handle bars, unfortunately they don't fit with the highway screen on. Good choice with the handle bars, a great mixture of American and British styling. Cheers, all the best
Fantastic video! It is one of the more useful review videos of the Speedmaster that I have seen! Other videos are great, but they’re all very similar; they share the statistics, mention the ride and the torque, etc. and obviously the looks, which are stunning, but they aren’t able to give you the good, the bad, and the ugly the way an owner can after 7000+ miles! Thank you so much for this! My brand new speedy will be in my driveway within a couple of months hopefully, so I will see how I feel after 7000 miles and compare my thoughts to yours. :-) Ciao Bella!
Thanks Marc 👍 Thats good to hear. Yup a review with some first hand experience behind it. O nice congratulations 🥳 I bet you cannot wait for it! Exactly, ride it and get to know it and then you can have your own judgement on it. Ciao Bella 😉
Great to hear you are loving it as well 👍 Haha yup I can imagine the high bars are better for your height. I would like the high bars, but unfortunately they don't fit with the highway screen!
I replaced the stock mirrors with the Triumph teardrop mirrors, using a few drops of locktite blue on the bolt threads, the mirrors stems do not protrude out as far as the stock mirrors and you still get a fairly good rear view, I hadn't given the plastic speedo housing to much thought, the harley's I owned previously had the tank mounted speedo, which took your eyes further off the road (to check the speed) than Speedmaster speedo and the chrome housing made it blinding if the sun hit it, so I was quite happy with the speedmasters speedo in front of the bars and black, overall I'm happy as with the Speedmaster it is a great fun bike to ride....I've had several favourable comments from people about the look of the bike, one guy and his wife were absolutely impressed to the teeth with the bike and they thought I had restored a 50's model Trump....
O nice they could work well (the tear drop mirrors). Yup that is a great point, with the speedo, a chrome surround might give bad glare from the sun. I suppose they thought of that and fixed it by going for the black surround 👍 Haha I have had that several times now!! People thinking it is a restored classic bike. Shocked when you tell them it is a 2019 model!
For your mirror issue you could have an adaptor mount made that can swivel and lock into place with an ident and then the stem could be left tight, it will always work lose if you move it as it is
A great review, thanks. Whenever I 'lust' after other bikes, I always - as Arsene Wenger almost once said - come back to the Speedmaster 1200 in the garage. I agree about rust - I have become a major buyer of AC50. I also keep a mirror tool with me...if I had one other criticism of the bike, it would be the 11 litre tank. Other than that, it's ..a brilliant bike.
Thanks Ralph. 😂 I am sure he did say that!! Who wouldn't want to get back to their Speedmaster! Yup the rust is an issue, I need to get mine ACF50 treated again soon. Agreed the tank is very small, I do spend a lot of time at fuel stations haha I find it is worth it though. Cheers
I put 2000 miles on a 2018 and completely agree with your assessment. I would add one negative point, and I heard it in your video. The transmission often makes a clunking sound when putting it in 1st gear. It’s not a big deal, but I wonder if it will be a problem down the road. No pun intended.
😂 I hope it won't be a problem down the road! Yup exactly the same with mine, a big clunk into first gear. It some times scares pedestrians at the lights! A great way to let them know the lights have gone green haha
The Speedmaster is definately a looker, that is for sure! I have very limited experience, but have already found out that comfort is very important for long treks. Presumably the reason one mirror keeps geting loose is because the wind will tighten the right one and loosen the left one? Perhaps Triumph should have reverse threaded the left one? Then it too would get tightened by the wind pressure while riding? Thanks for the review!
O yes she is!! haha. Yup comfort is so important for long trips, there is nothing worse than being uncomfortable to ruin your beautiful trip. That is a very good point, it might be. I think maybe not just because the mirror is fine until I have to pull it in, then it goes all loose! I love your train of though though. It is a really little annoying problem! I will find a way. Cheers
brilliant / super / fantastic / bravo - I really enjoyed watching this clip and honesty in good / bad points - thank you, I will still one day get this bike
I bought mine in May. Already have rust on the chrome wheel rims. Be aware also that sitting straight up riding positions combined with hard rear shock can cause serious damage to your back on rough road surfaces as every bump and jolt travels up your spine. I’d love my Speedmaster if it wasn’t crippling me. Once it’s hurt you it will hurt you every time you take it out. Give it at least an hour’s test ride before you buy. You’ll find out what I’m talking about.
Hi Terry, yes the spoked wheels do degrade somewhat! I really recommend treating them with a product called ACF-50 👍 Incredible stuff, I do my bike 3 times a year with it and the metals are in pristine condition! 15k miles in one year and kept outside all year round!! As for the rear shock 🥴 Yes it can give you a jolt over a big bump!! However for the majority of the time I have now problems. Cheers
I switched from a 2013 Yamaha FJR to a 2020 Speedmaster. I'm a bit vertically challenged and have a nagging hamstring injury so I needed to get a bit smaller bike. I have always loved Triumph's and get tired of the "Harley culture" in the US so it was a nice lateral move. I gave up a lot of horsepower but I've found I don't really miss it that much and the Triumph handles so well that fun factor is still there. Sure I can't cruise at 120mph all day but I couldn't do that on the Yamaha without collecting "performance awards." After changing to the comfort seating and adjusting the monoshock the ride isn't too harsh anymore and I would not trade comfort for handling anyway. I suspect aftermarket seating might be in order to please the wife but I love the look of the Triumph saddles versus anything out there. Triumph gets an F as far as luggage options for this bike. To tour in the US I need lockable luggage so I went to Hepco & Becker and their C-Bow system of bags. I now have both messenger style and leather panniers. I also got the luggage rack and padded backrest so I can use bags to carry extra gear. I like the cruise control and the road/rain traction settings and don't really mind the plastic rimmed speedo. I would like an optional touring tank so one can ride longer guess I was spoiled from riding Kawasaki & Yamah sport tourers. The mirrors are adequate but could be larger. Overall it is a really fun bike to just "go for a ride" on and adequate for touring. It took me awhile to get accustomed to the forward controls but I not only am getting used to it but enjoy it. I can see me riding this for a long time.
I would agree the addition of the back rest and more importantly the rear rack allows me to add a day sack stuffed with clothes for a tour, the saddle bags are used for camping equipment. So good amount of room.
Hi Steve, great to hear your liking the Speedmaster, it is a brilliant motorbike. Yup it is sooo comfy! Has to be one of the comfiest bikes out there. I suppose it is a nice change from the sports tourers for you as well. Same I strap bags to the back seat, it would be nice to have the back rest but unfortunately they where out of stock when I wanted it. Maybe they have them now. I have some big tours planned on it coming very soon 👍 Cheers
Thanks so much, really pleased you liked the review 👍 I am obviously biased, but I have done 15k miles in a 1 year on mine and loved every mile. Highly recommend
I think the action of pulling in your wing mirror is loosening it. The right one doesn't have the issue because it goes the other way - loosening then tightening again. I really don't think they are designed to be pulled in and out, though. I think you can buy after market mirrors that are designed to fold in and out.
@@steveoconnor7069 The Triumph lozenge shaped ones are good. If you want to see them on, check out my Seaside Sparkle Farkle video (channel Disposalist)
Yup I think you are spot on 👍 Good point they probably are not designed to be pulled in and out the whole time. Mind you I had the same issue with the Tiger 900! Mirrors just don't like me.
Not sure but I think Loc-tite Green is the most hardcore, stops parts falling off my FXDP (Bit late I know but just discovered yr channel ref from Darcy & T.O.M)
Appreciate this honest review. As a senior rider, I've been looking for a somewhat trimmer bike for shorter distance rides. Owned many bikes over the years including half dozen Harleys but looking for a bike a little easier to handle. Your description of the bike and how it handles, plus my attraction to the looks of the Speedmaster, seems to steering me in this direction. I've had a previous modern Triumph (96 Sprint 900) and was very pleased with it. Looking forward to a traditional Triumph Speedy in my future. Thanks
Nice review. But as a fellow tourer, I have put 12,000 miles on the speedmaster through some of the greatest national parks in the western USA. I agree with most all of your points, good and bad.. but the most annoying issue to me is the front fender is way too short sputtering All sorts of road debris right into the radiator... I have put an e tended on the fender.. and have also notices since putting it on that my boots stay drier in the wet..the bike generally stays cleaner when I go on a muddy road... not sure what triumph wasthinking with such a pu y little fender.. cheers
Thanks I appreciate it 👍 Yes I know what you mean, however I think they did it for the looks of the bike. I prefer the looks of the smaller front fender.
I agree with your view of the looks of the Speedmaster. It’s one of the few bikes I have owned that stir my soul every time I see it. I sometimes think It is the bike I have waited my whole life for. My only gripe is the lumpy throttle at slow speeds making slow turns a bit of a pain. Once the 2 year warranty is past I will have it remapped to solve this. Still the best bike I have ever owned.
👍👍 haha it is such a great looking bike isn't it! Same I do look at it a lot and think what a great looking bike, possibly the best on sale atm I think. Triumph really nailed it! I don't seem to get that lumpy throttle. I have had it decatted and the vance and hines exhaust, maybe that helped it breath a bit better? Cheers
great review, agreed with all, and how I love my speedy too. I originally went to buy an Indian Scout- (previously in a vulcan 900 and Vstar 950t) I came home with a Triumph- best decision! Love the handling, easy Clutch, cruise control, awesome getting 60miles per gallon! my only downside is Lube- which i get my husband to do now, and I still get rain in my face even with the windshield..I made a few changes: Triumph windshield, High bars, Mid controls(i'm short) Teardrop mirrors, which my left one came loose in the highway & had to hold it while riding in the rain.i didn't use any special tightener, it's still secure.Corbin solo seat, really helped-also using Cbow mount luggage. I'm shopping for my 2nd bike- as much as some of my riding group friends might feel more comfortable with me on a HD😳well it might just be a Tiger-low... we will see..
Hi Michele, thanks glad you agreed with the points! Exactly my reasons as well, the handling is far superior on the Speedmaster and I just love the nice and light controls. Sounds like you have put some great mods on yours 👍 Funny that your left wing mirror came loose as well, I have managed to tighten mine up with a spring washer. Not perfect but does the job. I would love a Corbin seat, need to save up some pennies! You can't go wrong with a Triumph 😉
I'm so glad to see a lady's input! I just bought one and I'm somewhat nervous as it's my first "new" bike and more powerful than what I'm on now. It'll be a bike to grow into and hopefully keep forever!! 😊
@@redangrevival thank you! I enjoyed your thoughtful review! I must have looked at a dozen bikes before settling on this one- and it was no question the second I swung a leg over. The fit is a dream, and of course the asthetics are just stunning. I have to wait a WHOLE WEEK for it to be trucked in from another dealer.. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!! 😄
@@emilysimmons7318 👍 My pleasure, really glad to hear you liked the video. I think you have made a great decision and won't be disappointed!! The week will fly by 😁 All the best and enjoy your first ride. Cheers
Great review. My Triumph had so much personality but I live close to the sea and my Scrambler spoke wheels started rusting and pitting right away. It really irked me because I had a much more inexpensive bmw g650gs with spoked rims and not one hint of rust at all! C’mon Triumph!
Thanks, I appreciate it 👍 Yup I can imagine that sea air getting to the metals badly. I live no where near the sea and it is still doing it! Exactly classic Triumph I guess. Interesting to know that it didn't happen with the BMW. Cheers
I taught my wife to ride and got her a 2018 speedmaster and she absolutely loves it. I try to educate her on the classic british look of it and she tells me over and over that it is just so pretty. I agree and it is so much fun to ride.
Nice revue, I've been following you on youtube for a while and I think you always make beautiful and heartfelt videos and I like that about all your videos. greetings from Belgium 👍✌
Speedmaster has the looks and was in my shortlist to buy. For me 3 things let it down as the final choice. First was the measly 12lt fuel tank. What were Triumph thinking when they put such a small tank on a 1200cc bike when the design brief was to make a cruising/touring motorcycle. Secondly was the lack of lockable luggage in the available accessories. Which means trusting your fellow man when the leave the bike unattended somewhere e.g. coffee, sightseeing, when you are out touring/riding. That will never end well. Lastly is the very average passenger accommodation. Even in comfort spec the pillion saddle is so small it would only suit a ballerinas bottom. I ended up buying a Moto Guzzi 1400 California Touring Edition. 21lt of fuel, lockable hard panniers and glorious passenger accommodation. Like the Speedy it has the looks and the street cred along with quality lineage.
Hi Richard, they are all very valid points 👍 Definite down sides, the small tank and luggage can get annoying on tour. I am willing to deal with that for the time being, just love riding it so much! Nice I just looked up the Guzzi 1400, beautiful bike. Looks like BMW have taken some design cues from it for the R18. Both quality bikes. Cheers
Hi Richard, the 12 ltr fuel tank isn't that bad, I'm getting 23k's to the litre, considering the HD streetbob has a 114 ci motor and has a 13.2 ltr tank, fuel injection has given bikes fairly good fuel economy, I normally stop fuel up and a coffee about 160k's....this old body of mine does not want to do what it used too LOL
My Thruxton has a tiny tank, yet does nearly 60 mpg and where I live the nearest fuel is a 50 km round trip, yet it does a good job of travelling around. Even on a touring bike fuel stops can be over 400 km apart, so you have to carry fuel in Australia's remote regions
I just traded in my 2002 Bonnie America for a 2022 Speedmaster. I had the same loose left mirror issue on the '02 bike that was very annoying while riding. There was a cracked "spacer" sleeve that was replaced but eventually over time loosened up again anyway. Looking forward for the snow to melt & temps to rise here in upstate New York
O nice, congratulations on your new Speedmaster 👍 Ha thats funny, yea I cannot work out what the problem is with the wing mirror, something I probably just have to live with! I bet you can't wait, not too long now. All the best from the UK.
Interesting I have a 2002 America, which I’m looking to update and I’m considering the Speedmaster or the Moto Guzzi v85 TT, as hoping to do more longer runs in the future, which would you recommend?
I’m glad I’m not the only one with a wobbly left mirror. Get the same problem on my Yamaha XJR 1300. Good review considering a speed master over a Harley. Stay safe stay strong 👍🏻
Blue Locktite on the threads. Avoid the Red - it works but generally requires heat and a bit more torque to losen. If that doesn't work - find a wing bolt that you can tighten without the tool - you might need to have one made to have both the correct threads/length and wings big enough to really torque down. - Or just keep using the wrench 😎
👍 Cheers Vincent I appreciate it. Yes I may give the Blue Lock tight ago I think. No I am not living in London it isn't so much of a problem!! Haha still take the wrench with me everywhere!! Cheers
Exact same problem with my left mirror on my 2014 Triumph Commander! I'm seriously thinking of a modest down-sizing to a Speedmaster as the Commander feels like driving Mount Everest lately. Beautiful when it is moving, challenging in parking lots and one's own garage. Will give a serious look at the Speedmaster. Thank you for the review.
I traded my Speed Triple 955i against one of these last year. Regarding the clutch....the Trip had a pull on it like a tractor and after 150 miles my hands and wrists were toast. The lightness of the Speedy clutch was a HUUGGE plus for me.
👍 congratulations on getting your Speedmaster. I can imagine, coming from a clutch like that to the Speedmaster, an absolute game changer! Glad you like it. Cheers
Mirror problem: try using some lock tight on the threads and then tighten up to the recommended torque setting. Also, just for info, that is a Torx key you are using. Agree with you about the pluses and minuses. My only point about the instrument cover is that a chrome one may produce reflections and be distracting in the sunny weather... 👍
To all the Speedmaster owners out there - how is the long-term reliability? Are there any mechanical failures to expect? Where is the Speedmaster made, is it still in England?
Thanks 👍 No worries, glad you got a chance to watch it. Haha now I am not living in London I just leave the left wing mirror out the whole time! Solves the problem. Cheers
A nice honest review and update of the good looking Speedmaster. Shame about the tarnished casings, have you tried to polish it back up yet……I’m sure it could be done easily/cheaply. Good video👍
Thanks, I appreciate it. I know it is a night mare, I don't think they can be polished because it is brushed aluminium, I have been told they could be powder coated and that should fix it. Cheers
The Speedmaster will be my next bike. I have a T100 Bonneville, which I love. But even with the comfort seat I don't find it that comfortable, so an upgrade is required!
Do you think you can part with the cool looks of speedy, and go down the Tiger route to solve you load carrying issues? It's something I'm thinking about with my scramble XC, but I just love the looks......and the attention it gets 😊
Hi Leon, hmmmmm 🤔 A very tricky one! I'm honestly not sure if I could atm, but given time I think it will have to be a move I make. With the tours/adventures I have planned I fear I will need something more suited to travel. A very good question 👍
Filthy or spotless, that bike is gorgeous! I agree with your assessment - "one of the best looking motorbikes you can buy today!" And BTW, you can purchase Viking hard or hard leather lockable bags with quick disconnect mounts specifically for the Speedmaster. I have them on mine. Loads of storage. Oh, and add some loctite to that mirror.
👍 Cheers. Yup completely agree, however dirty it gets it still looks great! Will take a look at the viking panniers. Only probably with the lock tight is I will be pulling the mirrors in and out the whole time!
@@redangrevival These fit my 2022 Speedmaster. I have the backstay/backpad/luggage rack set up on order, as the sissy bar bag straps wrap around the stay and the bag sits on the rack. But you can sit it on the pillion seat as well. Cheers!
@@redangrevival They often have sales. Right now they have a 20% storewide sale going on. That's how I bought all my accessories from them, on sale :) You might need them to ship to someone in the US who can ship everything to you. I am in Asia (military,) and that's how I do it. Looking forward to watching your tour! Gambatte!
It might not suit you but I like blacked out bikes and wonder if powder coating would help with the wearing on the engine parts? A really good review and the Speedmaster is still my aspirational bike 😊👍🏻
Thanks Lily, fair enough a lot of people seem to like all blacked out bikes. Personally I like some shiny chrome! Very tacky of me 😂 Yes I have been told that powder coating would be the best way to go, so a very good suggestion from you. Get that license and the world is you oyster!! 😉
Each motorcycle has its own good and bad points but I've found that the lack of self canceling turn signals is a major annoyance! Riding for a quarter or half mile while your previous corner has long since passed makes wearing a full face helmet a necessity so that no one can see how embarrassed you are!
That's where the mindfulness thing comes into play. I have a riding buddy that has to be reminded frequently to shut his off and he has an Indian Chieftain which one would think would have self-canceling signals.
Coming from riding bikes for years with self cancelling blinkers I had the same problem....I got sick of riding around with a blinker flashing so I started being mindful of the blinker immediately after a turn and turn the blinker off, I've now trained myself to turn the blinker off after each turn.....Well....99% of the time anyhoo.
Nice to see you have been able to be more mindful of it 👍 Same I generally do not have a problem with the indicators. However when I do ride a bike with self cancelling it is a luxury!
Re. the high revs dead zone I don't think the 2022 one I have suffers so much from that - I find it has loads of power through quite a long range when overtaking for example. I guess with the 2018 you'll just have to get used to changing gear mid-overtake? At least the gear charges are very easy and smooth!
As far as I know I don't think they are tuned differently. It is not a biggy, mainly feel it in second gear coming out of a corner or round about. Maybe they did change it for 2022. It is generally fine for over takes, but it was not designed to be the quickest bike anyway, so all good .
@@redangrevival Oh they did change somewhat. The engine components were altered physically and the mapping changed. Not radical changes, but they are there.
One thing I noticed when you were riding out of the muddy woods was your riding position. It reminded me of the position police officers ride in on their police bikes. The wide stance handle bar makes guiding the SpeedMaster very nice. I sometimes wonder how you English chaps can give a thorough review seeing as how you have to ride along paved carriage roads over there. I am in the market for either a T120 (second choice) and the SpeedMaster (first choice. Ride safe.
Your mirrors are actually a little low. Harley offers a kit that allows you to raise the height of your mirrors. For yours I'd look for a set of stalks that come straighter up and higher above your hands. Perhaps an aftermarket set? Alternatively, I've seen some that mount on the wind screen.
Hi Robert, many thanks for the info 👍 I appreciate it. Thats sounds good, I am off on a tour soon so may look into some that come up above my hands once I'm back. Cheers
Hi Angus, regarding the "bad point" #2 where you have a dead spot between gears, as you have demonstrated in the video, I have been lately reading a bit about the effects of removing the catalytic converter from the motorcycle. From what I have read the cat will provide 'back pressure" for the outflow, but when removed the increased airflow causes the engine to run lean and can have a negative effect on the motorcycles ride-ability, mostly noticeable in lower rpm range where the bike can develop a on/off like throttle action after a decat. Not sure if that is what is causing your issue, but thought I would let you know about it.... Anyway, love your channel, and your laid back and knowledge based approach to reviews. Keep them coming! Chow Bella!
Hi Sandra, many thanks for that, very interesting. I have been thinking of taking the bike to get a remap, since you have mentioned that I think I will book it in for one asap 👍 It does feel slightly strange in 4th gear as well! Thanks so much really glad you like the reviews. All the best "CHOW BELLA"!
If you start your engine cold and let run on idle for 5 minutes it’s computer will remap itself. Maybe it will solve that problem. Mine is decat and has X installed between the 2 pipes and it is very linear all up to 4500 rpm at every gear.
I think you should mention that when you have a passenger and your saddlebags are on , the passengers feet/boots tend to hit your boots ,especially when you are moving away
That is good to know. Must say I have never had a passenger on with panniers as well. At the end of the day I suppose it is a small bike for a cruiser and there has to be some compromises!
I haven’t noticed the mud guard problem. Fair enough on the power, it is only a small thing higher up in the rev range. Bit flat up top. All round fantastic bike 👍
Great bike, will definitely add to shortlist. I had the same thing happen with one of my mirrors on my old R1200GS. There was some combo of turning the nut on the bottom which would create a firm hold after some trial and error, but if you got the twist wrong while trying to fix it, you'd have floppy mirror indefinitely.
@@redangrevival Use blue loctite for the mirror issue. It won't prevent you from unscrewing if you have to but will provide resilience from vibrations and won't come loose. I recommend either 242 or 243 blue loctite. Leave it at least 24 hrs to cure. Let's say with 10 minutes is enough for it to settle but only at 24 hrs mark does it completely cure.
Good review, l had a speedometer 865cc some years ago nice bike but luggage was a problem it had a rear rack which I used to carry my roll bag....big mistake the front end went so light so had to move it to the pillion seat. Travel light or swop bike. Take care.
Thanks Stuart 👍 Yup it is becoming a bit of a problem now! I am planning a big tour very soon and am trying to work out how I can safely fit everything onto the bike!! Camera equipment/tent etc... Will definitely be travelling as light as possible. Cheers
Great points. The Speedmaster is a lovely bike. Maybe lock tight (blue) on the mirror threads. Also Motone sell replacement engine covers. I don't know if they would be more corrosion resistant but they might be worth a try.
Like the overall function and performance of the bike. But the chrome and the overall look is too retro for my taste. A lot of modding will happen from the aesthetics department. But experience wise, definitely great bike.
Hi, Once again a lovely well made video about a bike, this time it’s in fact your bike.😊 I never had a cruiser bike and this one is tempting because of the beautiful general outfit. I’m 5ft/11. So yo think that I will feel a bit cramped on it? I tried the Scrambler 1.2 XC and I felt it was perfect for my height and body size. But I didn’t felt very well on the T120, besides the long seat that was permitting to slide back a little to get a better riding position. This is lower than the T120…I’m afraid to feel somehow to big for the bike and I’m not very keen to buy a Harley…
Thanks so much. Yes the Speemdaster is a beautiful bike and I love mine. However it is limited on size. I think at 5'11" you might just get away with it. Definitely recommend a try 👍
Hello - Thanks for the wonderful video. I need your frank opinion - is this bike capable of doing 400-500 miles in a day? Both from perspective of driver comfort and engine capabilities?
Hi, it is my pleasure and really glad you enjoyed the video 👍 Yes it is very capable, engine will handle it easily. If you have the right set up then comfort is good too. Only thing is you will have to stop to fuel up a couple times.
Great review, is the rear suspension too bumpy? Rust is also a big concern living by the sea :(, I have a Tiger 900 and it does now show rust almost in any part but the clutch cable
Thanks I'm pleased you liked the review 👍 The rear suspension is good until you hit a bump! It can get a little bumpy but nothing too bad, I actually think it gives it a bit more character. Just avoid big bumps in the road. Yes rust is a concern, especially on the Bonnevilles. I use a product called ACF-50, if you live by the sea I recommend treating your bike with it 3 times a year. It is very good at preventing rust. A great motorbike the Tiger 900, I really enjoyed test riding it. Cheers
I like the phone case for gps use. They should fix that high end dead power. Does your wrists hurt holding at that angle? Not so into the rusting and metal issues. How long does the chain last? I had chain drive a while ago but seems the belt and or direct drives came alive.
It is actually a bag meant for bicycles! I got it in a shop called Halfords 👍 It is a cruiser style engine so not designed for high end power, all about the low torque delivery. My chain lasted 20k miles!!! That is certainly on the higher end 😁
What product did you use to was that caused the tarnishing. I once used Mucoff on one of my bikes and after the first was it did the same and that set the rust off. Some cleaning products are too harsh. But I must also add the best wash ever for me has been Simoniz with Carnuuba wax OMG gleaned after that with little effort. Was hand dry gleaming.
I was on tour in France and pushed for time, so I took the bike to a hand wash!!! Very bad idea, as the soap was acidic. My mistake and it will not happen again haha Now I just use warm water and a small amount of fairy liquid, seems to do a great job 👍. I also get my bike professionally treated with ACF-50 3 times a year. It is an amazing product, highly recommend it.
Perhaps a bit of Lock tight on the old threads although you seem to need to pull it in from time to time .Really like the bike Angus but I think I would change the bars for me as I am not so keen as you on those swept back ones , The clock is a bit disappointing think I would prefer two clocks or I guess as you say a chrome surround would help apart from that a cracking bike . : )
Cheers, yup I love the bars. I have looked into changing them to the mini ape handle bars but unfortunately they do not fit with the highway screen. Thanks good idea with the lock tight, but I do have to pull the wing mirrors in regularly. It is an annoying little problem haha.
If you need to drag the mirrors in each time you park the bike in your front garden... then you will have to use your new Allen type wrench to tighten before each and every ride... but isn’t it worth it ? I would certainly think so ! I want one and intend on getting one ! What does Red Ang mean ? You did say you would elaborate but maybe I missed that vid ???
Yes I think it is something I will have to live with, as I need to do this every time I get the bike out haha! It is definitely worth it. No I haven't said yet, it is the first 3 letters of my last name and first 3 letters of my first. I will let you think on that one!! Cheers 👍
How do you compare the speedmasyer and the T 120? Is The T 120 beyter suited for s bit more serious youring than the speedmaster. Thks for any feedback. I like all you reviews as very honest and well thought out!
Thanks so much I really appreciate that. Tbh I think the Speedmaster is better for longer touring, I suppose it really just depends on what you find more comfortable. I personally prefer the laid back style of the Speedmaster, and I also prefer the looks. They are both great bikes, just personal preference really. Cheers
Great review & I absolutely agree this is without doubt the classiest looking bike on the market & has that quintessentially British look, quick question:- is the Speedmaster too much bike for a new rider..?
Thanks Troy, glad you liked the review 👍 Such a classy motorbike! Good question, 1200cc is a big engine and it is not a light bike! Your insurance will be very high! It is hard to remember back to when I got my license, but my first bike was a Yamaha Tracer 700. I think power wise it is ok, but this depends on your confidence and personal riding ability. Take one for a test ride and see how comfortable you feel on one 👍
Fair enough that is a very good quote! I would say you should be fine on it as a new rider. Sensible and have enough road experience etc... to handle it 👍 Will sit nicely along side the 911!!
Looking to buy a second-hand 2023, I’m 5ft2, not sure if my legs are gonna be too short to reach the lever lolz. I’m going for a short test ride this weekend, but may I ask if you think having the phone mounted where you mount it but without a front screen will be a problem? (Mount will be a quad lock) Like will my phone go flying when i hit higher speed 😂
Hi Red I am seriously considering one of these. What’s it like on u-turns? I pulled back my Vulcan S bars and it is so much more comfortable, but very slightly reduced the turning angle. Den
Hey Den, Yup I would say it is pretty average! Not bad/not amazing!! haha hope that makes sense. Put simply I have not had any problems with tight manoeuvres.
Great comments. Surprised you didn't mention rear suspension. I get jolted pretty hard on certain types of bumps. Going to investigate Ohlins upgrade, wondered if anyone else changed the rear setup?
Those mirrors are designed to be set and left. Your pulling them in simply loosens the LH one and tightens the RH one. I think you are asking the bike to do something it was never designed to! A bit unfair to criticise it for that. 🙃
The oil check horror deters me...I know it sounds childish but if a manufacturer pays so little attention to detail ...I cannot trust the rest - too bad because I love the looks - heard of quality related issues with the T12 HT engine a bit too frequently to be convinced (also..I had a Tiger 1000 Se in the past - not the best best bike I owned in terms of quality) - so I am biased.
I'm hoping to buy a new 2022 Speedmaster within the next few days, and I'm wondering how it is riding with a passenger? I'll have my girlfriend with me on many trips this summer and I'm wondering how it is to ride with a passenger. Thanks!
Hi Jason, I actually haven't done too much riding with a passenger. If I am being totally honest I would say it is that good for riding with a passenger! The rear seat is very small and hard. If you are going to do it I recommend speccing the rear back rest and getting the comfort pillion seat and back rest. This would make it much more comfortable. Also on this point the rear suspension does suffer going over bumps in the road. I would recommend test riding one with your girlfriend before purchasing if possible 👍 Cheers
I’m looking for a bike to do some lite touring on… I test road the speed master the other day… and love the torque…I saw your review first so when I road it I rung its neck a little bit and had no fade off really… power just kept going till I wanted to change gears…..I’m still looking.. the thing that will keep me from getting this bike is that crazy 12 liter tank… why why why triumph..?? Come on 4 more liters wouldn’t make it look bad…. The other thing is not being able to put a center stand on it…..if I can’t have a center stand… make it a belt drive…I think everyone would like that…my other option is a royal enfield super meteor 650…even they have a 15 liter tank…I don’t think I’ll be happy with the power but at least I won’t spend my touring time in the gas station….and the rust issue… that’s another story…. Come on triumph step up to the plate..
It definitely has its down sides and yes when touring the fuel tank is a nightmare! However none of these problems put me off the bike. I can forgive its problems for looking so beautiful! Cheers
Yes … but for that money…. It should be beautiful and functional… come on .. no center stand.? For the money ok a belt drive… I read a German company makes after market tanks.. bigger..and then there’s the corrosion issue…ok… I can clean… I love the motor.. and the look… but all the other stuff on top might push me away… Harley is an option but the country I’m in wants to overcharge me 5,000 usd from the price I can get the same bike in America….. and they make Harley’s here now…so my search continues…
Hi, the vibrations are good or lack of them. A nice thrumb from the engine but no bad vibes. The suspension is good but when you hit a large bump it is definitely noticed!
@@redangrevival Hi, I have a 1962 royal enfield and it has a lot of vibrations. Sometimes it makes my left hand numb. Was wondering if this will be a world apart.
@@royalthumperz7005 It will be a completely different story! You will not notice any vibrations through the handle bars 👍 I have ridden hundreds of miles with out stopping (only to fuel up!) and not noticed any vibrations through the handle bars. You will be pleasantly surprised!!
At motorway speed, yes the windscreen is noisy on the helmet, and there is some buffering! However at speeds below 60mph it is great 👍 I am 5 foot 9 inches and I can see over it fine. Hope that helps, cheers.
bonjour je ne comprends pas bien l'anglais mais la traduction est bonne j'ai une bonneville t 120 et j'hesite a la garder jusqu'a la fin ou a prendre une speedmaster .
Hi, the T120 is great 👍 The Speedmaster is the same engine just tuned slightly differently. More focused towards cruising. The T120 is a slightly more sporty ride.
@@redangrevival wow - you made my day. I couldn’t opt for mid-controls on the Triumph website. But if there is a mid-control spec option, then this is the next bike I am getting!
Hi there did you ever sort out your grotty engine casings....there is a video on here that shows how to polish up your casings or you could replace them with black casings...for sale at total triumph.
A fair point! However the Speedmaster clutch is very light. There are definitely benefits to having a slightly heavier clutch. Harleys have the heaviest!
Some modern bikes have this dual cooling system. Just helps keeps the engine cooler with air and water. Also on these retro bikes the air cooling retains a classic style
They are too small and too short in my apinion. If you are 6' or over and weight in at 95 kg or above you look stupid in on it, like its a toy. I don't understand where they were going with it. Is the population of Britain that small?
Not ideal for someone over 6 foot I agree! One of the best looking bikes around though, partly due to its dimensions. Haha yup we are still all under 5'9" out here. very old fashioned!!
NZ
👍 👍 Cheers that is a great tip. Will it work even when I pull the mirror in and out?
Yes
Locktight gives it friction
Thanks for the reply 👍 Going to look into that
I have the 2018 Speedmaster.
@@redangrevival thanks!
Great review, I love the bike and may purchase one for myself. Thanks for your honesty.
Many thanks Robert, no problem at all 👍 It is a brilliant motorbike, I am currently touring around Portugal on it and its ideal! Cheers
I got mine 6 months ago! And love it 😍 Just added the High Bars last week, better for a 6'3" 👌
Great to hear you are loving it as well 👍 Haha yup I can imagine the high bars are better for your height. I would like the high bars, but unfortunately they don't fit with the highway screen!
Great video, once again! You are very generous with the immense time you must be putting on this great channel! THANK YOU!!!!
Many thanks 👍 I really appreciate it. That is very kind of you. All the best
I suppose they thought of that and fixed it by going for the black surround 👍
Haha I have had that several times now!! People thinking it is a restored classic bike. Shocked when you tell them it is a 2019 model!
For your mirror issue you could have an adaptor mount made that can swivel and lock into place with an ident and then the stem could be left tight, it will always work lose if you move it as it is
Thanks, now that sounds like a solution that would work 👍 I will look into that, it would be ideal! Cheers
👍 Many thanks! Really glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely recommend the bike, a great motorcycle.
Excellent video! Very useful for me on the brink of buying a Speedmaster - Can't wait !
Thanks so much I appreciate it and hope you enjoy the Speedmaster 👌
Unfortunately Triumph have been out of the back rest a rear luggage rack! Maybe they have them in stock now 👍 They would help a lot. Cheers
Great review as I am thinking of buying a Speedmaster!!
I've been looking for some bigger after market mirrors. I'm think maybe just bigger round mirrors or slight ovals.
Thanks
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed the review 👍

What a great present to give 👌 So glad she appreciates the classic beauty of the bike

@@redangrevival You welcome ✌
Haha seems to be a common trait! Thanks and the same to you
Blue Locktite on the threads.
It must be the angle of the threads or something! I definitely recommend testing the Speedmaster out, its a great ride 👍
Thanks, I may try that 👍 Great point with the chrome surround, that is probably the reason. Haha cheers I always forget what it is called!!
To all the Speedmaster owners out there - how is the long-term reliability? Are there any mechanical failures to expect? Where is the Speedmaster made, is it still in England?
Having done over 20k miles on mine I can say the only thing gone wrong is a flat tyre! It really has been great. I believe they are made in Thailand
What a great video sorry I was a bit slow watching this one and yes I have had the left-hand wing mirror issue.
You won't be let down by the Speedmaster! Such a beautiful bike and a great upgrade from the T100
Loving your videos
Many thanks Steven 👍 That is great to hear and really pleased you are enjoying the vids. Cheers
Cheers!
@@rabukan5842 Thanks, that is really useful to know. I am planning a big tour very soon, so will definitely look into them 👍
@@redangrevival They often have sales. Right now they have a 20% storewide sale going on. That's how I bought all my accessories from them, on sale :) You might need them to ship to someone in the US who can ship everything to you. I am in Asia (military,) and that's how I do it. Looking forward to watching your tour! Gambatte!
👍 That is great thanks for the info. I am planning on leaving in a week or so. Not sure if I will get the bags in time!! Cheers
Each to his own 😊 Yeah, can't wait 💖
@@redangrevival yup. Chrome fan too. But I'm old lol
😂
Yes the mindfulness massively helps with this 👍
Nice to see you have been able to be more mindful of it 👍 Same I generally do not have a problem with the indicators.
Ride safe.
Haha yup our roads are not the best! The Speedmaster is such a great and classic design, highly recommend it 👍
Your mirrors are actually a little low.
Cheers
I have an 04 speedmaster, love that bike
Cheers, such a beautiful bike isn’t it 👍
Hi Angus, regarding the "bad point" #2 where you have a dead spot between gears, as you have demonstrated in the video, I have been lately reading a bit about the effects of removing the catalytic converter from the motorcycle.
Great bikes, no power through the gear problems on mine.. one bad point missed...mud guards hardly work...I had to extend mine front and back...
I definitely recommend it 👌 Yup it has been a pain, but now I have just got used to not folding it in when in traffic!
@@OctaviusPelagius Thanks for that 👍 Will give it ago
Good review, l had a speedometer 865cc some years ago nice bike but luggage was a problem it had a rear rack which I used to carry my roll bag....big mistake the front end went so light so had to move it to the pillion seat. Travel light or swop bike. Take care.
Thanks Stuart 👍 Yup it is becoming a bit of a problem now! I am planning a big tour very soon and am trying to work out how I can safely fit everything onto the bike!! Camera equipment/tent etc... Will definitely be travelling as light as possible. Cheers
@@redangrevival sorry that should have read Speedmaster, predictive text 😆
@@StuartRShaw-vy5tz Haha all good, I guessed so!!
Great points. The Speedmaster is a lovely bike. Maybe lock tight (blue) on the mirror threads. Also Motone sell replacement engine covers. I don't know if they would be more corrosion resistant but they might be worth a try.
Thanks, yup I absolutely love her! Cheers a few people have suggested lock tight. But would it work for when I have to pull the mirrors in and out?
@@redangrevival Hmmm, probably not
Like the overall function and performance of the bike. But the chrome and the overall look is too retro for my taste. A lot of modding will happen from the aesthetics department. But experience wise, definitely great bike.
Cheers Azzam, yup fair enough if retro is not your style then it is definitely not for you. Maybe more blacked out would look more modern.
Thank you for a good review.
Do you know, ore think if the later models also has a the problem with rust and corrosion on wheels and forks?
It is my pleasure and glad you enjoyed it 👍 Mine is a 2019 model, for later models I am not too sure to be honest
Hi, Once again a lovely well made video about a bike, this time it’s in fact your bike.😊
I never had a cruiser bike and this one is tempting because of the beautiful general outfit.
@@redangrevival Many thanks. Will try it!😅
Hello - Thanks for the wonderful video.
My mistake and it will not happen again haha
Now I just use warm water and a small amount of fairy liquid, seems to do a great job 👍. I also get my bike professionally treated with ACF-50 3 times a year. It is an amazing product, highly recommend it.
Thanks for the review. Have you still got the bike? How's that corrosion/tarnishing looking now? Best wishes.
Its my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it 👍 Yes still have the bike and loving it! The corrosion is still there but not getting worse
Personally I think a brushed bronze bezel around the gauge would tie in beautifully with the highlights on the casings.
Cheers, yup I love the bars. I have looked into changing them to the mini ape handle bars but unfortunately they do not fit with the highway screen. Thanks good idea with the lock tight, but I do have to pull the wing mirrors in regularly. It is an annoying little problem haha.
Haha cheers Rick, I think I agree 👍 A great rustic/classic look
Did u have any issues with scraping the pegs in the corners
No I haven’t had that problem yet. The lean angle is not too bad. Mind you I am not the sportiest rider!!
I swapped to the mid foot controls and the flat bar - basically the Bobber Black now. Plenty of lean angle available now
If you need to drag the mirrors in each time you park the bike in your front garden... then you will have to use your new Allen type wrench to tighten before each and every ride... but isn’t it worth it ?
I would certainly think so ! I want one and intend on getting one !
What does Red Ang mean ?
You did say you would elaborate but maybe I missed that vid ???
Yes I think it is something I will have to live with, as I need to do this every time I get the bike out haha! It is definitely worth it. No I haven't said yet, it is the first 3 letters of my last name and first 3 letters of my first. I will let you think on that one!! Cheers 👍
Also try triumph newcastle website..good luck and take care out there.
Thanks Melvyn I appreciate it.
I’m no spring chicken at 58 & only pay around £500 insurance on a 911, I know I’m new to biking but I’m old enough to be sensible.
Just been quoted £306.00 fully comp which I feel is very reasonable.
Fair enough that is a very good quote! I would say you should be fine on it as a new rider. Sensible and have enough road experience etc... to handle it 👍 Will sit nicely along side the 911!!
Nice video. Didn't know that came with a steering wheel.
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video 👍 Steering wheel?
Looking to buy a second-hand 2023, I’m 5ft2, not sure if my legs are gonna be too short to reach the lever lolz. I’m going for a short test ride this weekend, but may I ask if you think having the phone mounted where you mount it but without a front screen will be a problem? (Mount will be a quad lock) Like will my phone go flying when i hit higher speed 😂
I think you will fit the bike just fine 👍 Your phone will be ok
Hi Red
I am seriously considering one of these. What’s it like on u-turns? I pulled back my Vulcan S bars and it is so much more comfortable, but very slightly reduced the turning angle.
Den
Hey Den,
Yup I would say it is pretty average!
Thanks Tom 👍. Had to limit myself to 5 reasons each! But yup same, have to watch out for large bumps or I go flying haha
Those mirrors are designed to be set and left. Your pulling them in simply loosens the LH one and tightens the RH one. I think you are asking the bike to do something it was never designed to! A bit unfair to criticise it for that. 🙃
Yes that is the case. Unfortunately they weren't set up correctly. I was scraping the barrel for negatives!
Does speedmaster have Tubeless tyres or it has tubes in it...I am planning to go for this but then I dont want pain during puncture
It says tubeless on the tyre, but they do have a tube!
Do you still have it? I consider getting me a new one, and I'm wondering if you have come across any other negative issues?
Yup still got it 👍 The rear suspension is not great, but can easily be changed out
The oil check horror deters me...I know it sounds childish but if a manufacturer pays so little attention to detail ...I cannot trust the rest - too bad because I love the looks - heard of quality related issues with the T12 HT engine a bit too frequently to be convinced (also..I had a Tiger 1000 Se in the past - not the best best bike I owned in terms of quality) - so I am biased.
@ 2:06 in, can anyone guess what is wrong with the front fender? Just look at that radiator. Where were the engineers?
Still one of the best looking bikes out there imo
Pls comment on the vibrations? How good is the suspension?
Hi, the vibrations are good or lack of them. A nice thrumb from the engine but no bad vibes.
The suspension is good but when you hit a large bump it is definitely noticed!

Some modern bikes have this dual cooling system. Just helps keeps the engine cooler with air and water. Also on these retro bikes the air cooling retains a classic style
