A clearly explained video on a key points for a pure strike. Well done Sir!
Thank you kindly! Hope it helps
You are the best teacher online. This drill gripping down really helps me as I tend to hit the ball thin.
Many thanks for your kind comment! Glad this has helped the thin strike
John, that was really a great illustration of how to maintain bent spine and hit down and through the ball...cheers
Really nice video, thanks, Mike
I figured this out naturally while at the range and was amazed at how well my shots improved. Thank you for the video!
One of the best teachers out there. I am working on this at the moment. So important. If we all can understand this lesson and actually are able to execute it we will all be much improved iron players. This is the essence of striking an iron!! I realize this vid has been around a while but I am a 100% percent believer in this content. Thanks for creating this video. I know a lot of time and effort goes into this. And it's free!! Cheers mate.
Thank you for you your kind comments David. Glad to help 👍🏻
Just had my first lesson with video and trackman that confirmed I wasn't covering the ball. With the video and Trackman I was able to change my attack angle by covering the ball. The results were mind blowing. These drills will be part of my future practice..... Thx for the video....
Pleased to hear it, keep up the good work Bryan
This is excellent, can't wait to hit the range after work tonight!
+Geo B Hope it helped! How was the range session?
First drill is incredibly helpful
Glad you think so Mark, thanks for the message 😂
Like these two drills! Thankyou very much!
+Tom Hobbs Thanks Tom
great stuff ...thanks !! ...I've heard this "cover" term many times but now I'm very clear on its meaning
+FairwayJack glad it helps, thanks Jack
great video, thanks for posting
+Rodrigo Gutierrez Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for your insightful instructions. Many common instructions concentrate on the hip turn causing the sternum behind ball at contact...fat shot....the other is keeping your head behind the ball. Drills to cure the problem are good but sometimes hard to transfer to the actual swing. Do you have any whole swing thought which will result in ball first contact and then divot? For example, extending you forearms through impact. Appreciate your consideration, Tom
+Thomas Palmer Thanks Thomas. The feeling of extending the arms is a good one as long as the pressure is felt into the lead side into impact. Check out my video on rotate and extend. Many people miss understand extension. I would class it as the trail arm reaching straight just after impact.
Great video mate, I think this is my answer to why I'm hitting so many fat shots
+Lorenzo Many thanks mate. Be good to see your swing a some time in an online lesson
Hi Jon, why do I fall back or sometimes step back when hitting driver. Is it lack of confidence or anxiety over where the ball is going. Is my stance too narrow. The rest of my game is good, hit solid irons, chip and putt well. The driver has been dragging me down for some time. Need help please. Thanks for posting all these videos, they are very helpful, I always seem to pick something up relevant to my game
Hi Seamus, I would need to see your swing. Can help with an online lesson, email jon@trugolf.co.uk and I’ll send some info.
It could be one of a number of reasons 👍🏻
Great video and explanation. Thanks!
Great explanation! I like the details.
Great video: 2 questions- aren't you supposed to shift your lower body laterally to start the downswing, which would cause the upper body to tilt back? Also, how does this mesh with the statement that one should stay behind the golf ball?
+Leonard Dzubow Hi Leonard, there should be a small lateral shift in the transition but then rotation around a firm lead leg. This highlights that overdoing a lateral slide towards the target will cause the upper body to tilt behind the ball. And no you shouldn't be behind the ball with an iron. You should be with a driver, but this is manly because of a more forward ball position
Great tuition. In the second drill are you suggesting we initiate the downswing with the upper body? I though swing down happens with the lower body and gravity.
Thank you! No I would always start the downswing with the lower body first, ground up.
Great video! Would this drill work for longer clubs like Driver except you do the same thing with the necessary set up?
All iron’s definitely. With the driver you would like to maintain spine angle but most good drivers have there head behind the ball at impact. To help a positive angle of attack
@@TruGolfAcademy thanks for the reply! Would the same philosophy of irons be applicable to fair way woods and hybrids off the deck?
Should you still feel like you’re covering the ball when you’re hitting driver with the ball forward in your stance? I’m struggling with push slices with my driver and hooks with my irons and am wondering if covering the ball could be part of my problem. Cheers!
Sorry late reply. Not as much as the ball is off the tee and we are striking up. Although we do want to maintain spine angle ideally so this is a good drill to exaggerate the opposite if someone is early extending.
Would you modify this instruction for the driver and possibly fairway woods and if so...how? Great instruction, btw.
+P Cohen No same swing, just spine angle slightly more vertical at set as less pelvic tilt
Love your vids. One ? When I get over the ball, seems it causes me to come "over the top". As a result, I try to stay back then end up with hip slide and secondary tilt. Any suggestions? Thanks again.
+Len Floth Take a look at this video it may help ruclips.net/video/kxi_qE9Kqvw/видео.html or one I did on centring the hips. Cheers
Basically John, all that is required is to make sure you get sufficiently over to the lead side on the downswing to make good contact. I am not a fan of lowering my spine because that requires you to elevate it again as you make contact and if your timing is off, then you will either hit it fat or top it.
Maintaining is fine 👍🏻 just not as powerful as you lose out on some vertical forces. Apologies for the delayed response
Jon, can you tell me what part of the ball do you aim for? Straight down the line towards target or slightly on the inside?
+Michael Cunningham I don't focus on a particular part as I will never see the club strike the ball. However I have used this as a swing thought to help golfers with a path problem or that want to shape the ball. I.e. Aiming for the inside edge to swing more into out if their fault was a out to in path.
Thumbs up!
Great video :)
+Kim Henriksen Thanks Kim

I'm a former 4 hdcp and now an unhappy 9. Do you have a drill that can help me avoid the early extension thing? Thank you
+G G The first one in this video works great to reduce early extending, check this vid out alsoruclips.net/video/JV6COoY-3mM/видео.html . Let me know if I can help with online lessons, first taster session just £20. Jon
Wow, strong left wrist. As an aside, how do you bow the left wrist through impact (promotes ball turf) when it's really the heel of the left hand facing the target through impact?
+pigslefats I'm not sure what you mean?
Do you feel though that you're right eye can see the back of the ball at impact?
+Johnee Bee Sure, that could work to help maintain posture. As long as the head is tilting rather than moving behind the ball.
I am a 13 handicapper capable of playing to a 9. My missed are thin iron shots and while I incorporate your advice on increasing angles This still creeps up ; how can I eliminate this once and for all? I want to eliminate it for ever !I am willing to pay of course . Please tell me how to process .
Hi Sambhu, thanks for your message. I would need to see some swings to fully diagnose. I offer online lessons , where you can upload videos to a free app. Email me, jon@trugolf.co.uk and I’ll send details for you. Thanks, Jon
The second exercise is called the "Charles Barkley Swing" 😂
How stop shangking
Is that a question? Or you found this drill stopped you?
Why do so many teachers say to start the downswing with “a bump with the hips” ?
It causes fat shots for me
You maybe overdoing this move and compensating by tilting away from the target with your upper body. See my videos on Centring the hips, I think they would help. Happy to take a look in an online lesson also, let me know if you want some info?
Covering the ball is done by firing the right side, with the shoulders guiding the hips. See Ian Woosnam.
