The Pontiac Grand Prix has a very mixed reputation. From the bland commuter car to the supercharged GTP - this weird front wheel drive V8 definitely was an experiment for GM. Today we hop in this full bolt on Pontiac Gran Prix GXP from ZZperformance. It has an upgraded cam and a V8 roar - sending it's power straight to the front wheels. One of the most bizarre cars I've driven as a project, let me take you on a drive and tell you what it's all about.

My cousin had a blue 2006 Monte Carlo SS with the 5.3. Purchased it right out of the showroom floor. Definitely a sleeper and hurt quite a lot of feelings of people that thought it was just a S.C. V6. From a stand still, it was basically pointless on the streets. It would roast the tires right off but catch it already rolling and it would hand a lot of people their a$$. I'll admit that was a fun car and a sleeper from the factory for sure.

It’s cause the transmissions were garbage in the Grand Prix GXPs, they couldn’t handle the LS power and got chewed up. Quick tip, if you have a stock ls4 and your cruising with it in 4 cyl mode, you can blip the throttle without it lurching and it will change over to 8 cylinders, then go nuts. Smoother changeover than trying to accelerate out of 4 cyl mode.

It pulled hard, was comfortable, sounded amazing, got good mpg on the highway, and had a good (for 2000s gm) interior. The HUD and staggered wheel setup were pretty cool too. Definitely have to disable the DoD, it shouldn’t hurt fuel economy and makes the car feel and sound much nicer.

Cars were built to be affordable, easy to work on, and not over complicated in the past. GM cars and trucks were so easy to work on and parts interchanged easy. This kept prices down. My father bought a brand new F150 in 93 with a V8 for 12,500. Fast forward to 1999 I bought brand new F150 Step side 4.6 V8 with Manual Transmission for 18,500, but the stick was 23,500. The price on new truck with a V8 today is insane. Just the base models are nearly 40k.

I have driven, and been a passenger in both an Impala SS, and a GP GXP. Both cars are actually a lot of fun, they are pretty quick, bone-stock, and fall into the sleeper category.
Also, In Canada, the GXP came with Brembo brakes and Bridgestone Potenza tires on them, stock. Unheard of from domestic car makers at the time. It was funny that the front wheels were wider than the rears, but for an obvious reason.
The suede and leather interiors were pretty nice too, and the vehicle felt more special and sporty than the same era Camry or Accord.
I think it's awesome you have done all of these videos of the ZZP cars, I think you have made a lot of viewers aware that you can make GM platforms fun and reliable, and have something more unique than what most people drive.

Ayo I had a the same gen GT. In 06 the GT basically became the gtp; they put the supercharged v6 in the GT and dropped gtp name. This was the car that made me realize i could be into cars on a common waiter's budget (circa 2016). It had a myriad of issues and legit caught on fire on the highway, however i was young and very inexperienced with enthusiast cars; it was a lesson I needed.
Domestic car brand makes FWD single OH cam supercharged v6? And they said domestics aren't quirky?!
PS. Was definitely not expecting you to cover a Grand Prix. I'm into Nissan's and Imports these days but Pontiac and GM enthusiast cars will always have a place in my heart, so I appreciate that.

My first vehicle was a 1998 ford ranger that my dad and I fixed up back when I was 16. After 3 months of driving it I got hit by a drunk driver and it was totaled. Being from a small town there wasnt many options for used vehicles in town (mind you I was 16 and worked part time, didn't have much money) and I ended up getting a used 2007 grand prix.
This would have been 2015. It was a trade in at our local GM dealer. It was low kilometers (86,000 or 53,000 miles) and was a base model, so it had the standard series III 3800 motor.
All in all it was extremely clean and only needed new tires. I ended up getting it from the dealer for $5000 Canadian all in (or about $3800 USD at the time).
It may not have been the fastest car or the coolest car but man did I have a blast with it all throughout highschool. Learning to drift in a front wheel drive car got some time to get used to but where I live in the winter we have an ice road that opens up part of the winter where it's a full extra wide road that goes over great slave lake in Yellowknife nwt, couldn't tell you how many sick drifts I did there!!
I recently just sold it this past summer as I needed something bigger as I'm a home owner now but that car served me extremely well. In 7 years the only maintenance I did was oil changes, brake pads, some 02 sensors, cv shafts and a new power steering house. Ended up putting dual 12 inch Polk audio subs, all new door speakers, a 4 channel JL audio amp, a pioneer mono sub amp and a touchscreen head unit in. I was known as the bass head in town haha. So many good memories

The L47 V8 in that car was so good that GM used it in at least 6 different race cars, and the legend himself, Carol Shelby, even took notice of the quality of the L47.
Yet, in spite of all that, the entire car community as a whole has all but thrown the Aurora to the wayside, and seemingly totally forgot that the car even existed to begin with.
It's a platform worth building on, and the lack of aftermarket support is a direct result of never getting any love from car enthusiasts...

It would be cool if you could find a modified ninth generation Lincoln Continental. They where another forgotten FWD V8 IMO. Yes you had the jellybean Taurus SHO, the Cadillac Deville/DTS and some others I'm forgetting, but that generation of continental had what seemed to be a transverse Cobra motor in it (similar to the mark VIII but FWD), so fingers crossed you'll find one

With a modern 10spd transmission this thing would be sick.

I'm in VA and I drive a 2005 GTP with the supercharger. I've had a few mechanical issues in the 4 years I've had it, (replaced a transmission coolant line, new ignition switch, plastic coolant elbows blew out, replaced with metal ones) but at least it has never overheated like both of the Grand Ams I've owned. It's pretty peppy, but the suspension is a little rough. The HUD was broken when I bought it, and the cruise only half works. The rear wheels also have a pretty extreme camber compared to what I'm used to, so I go through rear tires quicker than is probably normal. I do like it overall though. I need to get it painted, as I hit a deer 6 months into owning it, so it has a door, fender and front fascia that doesn't match the rest of the car lol.

I don't know if it's true but I heard that the serpentine setup and water pump from the LS4 is good for LS swaps that are a tight fit

@2:24 The LS4 was in 4 cars, the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, The Impala SS, the Monte Carlo SS, and the Buick LaCrosse Super.
Also I have one of these cars, actually 2 of them, one of them is my old daily that was wrecked in 2021, I bought it back as a parts car for my new one
