The shifter seal and transmission main shaft seal can be good, but dont over look the transmission tube hose vent.. There is a vent on the back of these that is a rubber hose that is curved that as that manishaft turns in the trans throws oil towards the top and all of them if they are at the one quart full mark will drip a drop or two when you park them.
I have owned 6 Harleys none of them leaked (knock on wood) but if you got a primary leak, just change the seals, no since in leaving evidence everywere you go, I fix all my friends leaks when they get them it's not hard, just like anything else you just got to get to the gasket or seal and replace them and be on your way
Been riding for 54 years. Intimately familiar with how deep I have to dig to get to this particular seal. Done a ton of them. This leak isn't bad enough to warrant the work at this point. Doesn't even drop the level between oil changes.
You have given me confidence on my 09 SG! "They like to mark their territories" ... love that!! Lol!!.... my primary just started leaking after 43K mike mark. It's leaking out of the front where the "wires/tubes" enter the primary case. Not sure what to do or how to fix but at this point, I will consider it just being my Harley marking it's territory! Lol. Thanks for info!! ✌️
Good idea, my question is about the dye.....Once you've repaired everything and changed the oil etc do you still get the dye showing up in any future leaks ? Because that could be a problem second or third time around.
I have a 05 Dyna super glide my question to you is.. I have a drip leak on the primary side dripping from the allen bolt down bottom ride beside the drain plug.
I have seen people over tighten the plug and crack the housing. But be sure it is actually leaking there and not slowly weeping down the back side and leaving a drip at the low spot by the plug. This fools a lot of folks. If the back side of the primary is collecting oily dust it could be coming from the sprocket shaft/transmission seals. Common for these bikes. I no longer remove the drain plug to change the primary oil. I remove the derby cover and use a vacuum tank with a small hose to pull out the oil.
Goodnight, I liked your videos. What is the size of the wrench that loosens the large bolt to take the poly from the belt? I will have to do a service on my 1999 electra glide and I need to know what tools to buy .. now you can tell me in newton meters what the tightening of this poly is, what is the tightness of the clutch basket shaft, the starter screw , The axle where the alternator is and the remaining bolts that tighten the primary to the engine? Thank you very much and you're well Motorcycle greetings
They do say, if it aint leaking the crankcase is empty. I joke however, I really do love Harley. A bit of a closet Harley lover. Just don't tell anyone. :)
Had to walk home twice. One Yamaha with electrical failure, One Honda with electrical failure. My old Shovelhead used to like to shed parts, but never made me walk. The Fat Head is as reliable as an old Chevy, just runs and runs.
Every day user/rider over here summer and winter on a Harley-Davidson 2008 electraglide ultra classic 96 Ci Tc 60000 Miles on it (Just a one year owner 18000 Miles). It only stops if I want it to. Just like My Yamaha’s, BMW, Moto-Guzzi, Suzuki, Benelli, before. Exept My Ducati 900 SS 1978 it was a “little” sensitive, but big fun to ride. Have fun you all on your bike, whatever the brand or size.
Much respect for having the knowledge and sharing it, and for having and using the right tools!
Brilliant vid. Thanks, from Australia 🇦🇺

Great video. It answered many of my questions. Thank you.

When my old shovelhead stopped leaking I knew it was out of oil. Thanks for watching.
That's a grommet that needs replacing where the stator wires go into the primary.
At least it won't rust!! lol

Excellent information. I will get a bottle that dye. Should help me find my leak.
Thanks for watching.
Hey man. i used this method and it helped me find the leak on coming from my Shift Shaft Seal.
Handy stuff, thanks for stopping by.

Best you buy a service manual it lists all the torque values!! Unless you can't read!! lmao
Wrong on the trans quantity, a five speed holds 20 oz if you put in a quart, you've overfilled it and it will leak out.
Your right Jason, I just spoke without thinking.
thanks for the info trying to trace a leak on my 99 fatboy right now.
Your Welcome Robert.
