This week Matt has started a new project of working to finish off our master berth in the starboard hull.
The big hold up this entire time was that we didn't know exactly where the helm would be positioned or how the steering cables would come down to the area under our cockpit seats - which is also the back of our berth. And wouldn't it have been a pain to finish it all off originally, only to have to sand down portions so we could glass in extra space for this?
Luckily it was worth the wait, because we did in fact have to add an extra box for the cables to be able to lead down at a specific angle. Matt adds that in, and then also cuts out a space (under the cockpit steps) where the fan for our electric prop will be.
After those are in place he goes through and fits out and glasses in the shelf which will sit at the edge of inboard side of the bed. (Now I just need to find the perfect cup holder to fit in there!!)
While I have been off of the port side of the boat, perfecting all the coves so all those surfaces can (fingers crossed) get their final coat of finish primer on, Matt also takes to working on the cabin top. The extra edge that came on it to protect it during shipping needs to be cut off, so Matt uses a grinder to get the bulk of it off, and then sands it down to a smooth finish.
Things are really coming along, and I think we might see the light at the end of the tunnel, that by this fall we won't be covered head to toe in dust everyday. :)
We hope you enjoy!!
Hi everyone! If you made it to the end of the video and see that it cuts out mid sentence, that was not intentional. 😥 For some reason the closing segment didn't upload, but luckily the video was only 3 seconds from getting there, lol.
... get the first coat of p ..."rimer on and faired without a problem." is my guess ...
I haven't commented for a long time, but I haven't missed a second of every video. I just want to give you guys some encouragement, don't ever change to suit what part-time viewers want, which is the complete build done in 30 minutes. I have been watching since the very 1st episode of this build and will til the last, and then beyond.
You guys have come so far and it truly is a joy to watch you work all of this out. Many people have no idea the amount of time that goes into planning, learning, and then finishing a project. That's forgetting the RUclips video production on top of all of that.
Wow, been watching on an off since the start. Can't believe how much work is involved you two are amazing for not giving up!!
Grind ,sand, fairing, sand, rinse repeat,,, looking good .❤ lots of love in this boat.
So many areas are now ready for their FINAL coat of primer (honest this time, lol) and we could not be more excited about that!
I know that you are probably looking forward to being in the water with your completed boat just as much the viewers are! Keep up the hard work, the payoff is right around the long sweeping bend!
When this beauty is finally in the water, I will need to keep reminding myself: "Built by 2 people".
That's what we can't wait to think also! 😍
Nice work Team.
Your transformation of the master berth is truly remarkable. Your attention to detail and creativity in redesigning and improving the space reflect a keen eye for aesthetics and functionality. Your dedication to creating a comfortable and inviting environment is admirable. And I am a floating village life from Vietnam.
Dedication is spelled... MJ Sailing ! I've been changing out the sacrificial marine canvas on our Gib. I've had to dig deep to finish. You guys are amazing.
Folks ....... I have to say how much I have enjoyed watching you both on all your boat projects especially this one I have learn't soooo much just watching you.......thank you and I'll be sorry when it's done but chuffed for you too. keep it coming........cheers .....Pip
Thanks for the kind words. It's been pretty boring with just sanding, fairing and glassing, but hopefully that's about to change and we can get to the more exciting parts of the build
Looking good guys! Not far now. Looks like you are going to have an incredible home when you get this thing together.
First episode I have watched in a very long while. Still sanding and fairing. I remember way back when the hull sections were being assembled that adding an additional layer of glass was strictly forbidden in order to keep the boat as light as possible. 4,000 lbs of fairing compound later (99% being sanded off), and you’re still trying to get things perfect. Your relentless determination is admirable. My hat off to both of you. I’m certain that no one wants to see that boat completed more than you two, but at what point does being a sailor overtake the need to be a boat builder? Please hire some professionals for at least the fairing part of this build. It would take them less than a week to have the entire boat ready for paint.
Watch the first 3 minutes of episode 331, it will answer all those questions for you. 😉👍
The sanding channel. 😂😂😂 Coming along nicely.
And then just as we're finishing that up, 'Oh Glorious Sanding ' will be back from Mads. 🤣
Nice shirt Matt 😉
One of his favorites!! 😍
Nice to see you working on your own boat agian after well deserved break
The master berth is looking awesome!
Totally interesting the detailed thinking that you go through for what seems "simple". This will be a magnificent home/boat.
Thank you so much! Each week we're thrilled with the new changes we see. We can't wait until she's our official home!
That heavy metal back beat was perfect for the sawing seen! Great work at keeping it entertaining!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love the rock 'n roll background music. This further motivates me to play my own music to avoid copyright BS. Thank you for another great lesson !
Copyright BS? Not hating, but when you write and record your own music and have it played without permission by others, then you can complain.
I love to see the progress! Stay cool you two!
Wondered about the abrupt ending. Thanks for clarification. good progress, but it must be a true PITA to fiberglass interior walls of cabinets.
So I am doing a simular build at this stage, and I can tell you, the finish takes a lot of time. Sad reality but you guys are like me, optimistic to say the least. I wish you both tons of tenacity, you’ll need it. Livin our dreams
Fibreglass and sanding has to become the ultimate hated job after a while. It will be good to see you getting to final paint. The process of building out this boat has been much more complex than I could have ever imagined.
At least we're nearing the end of that portion. 😃 Right?!?! 🥺
We underestimated the amount of work it would take to fair out the interior too. We originally based our estimate on other amateur builds, but after looking over their completed boat, realized why they were so quick. The pro yards are similar to our build hours when the interior is done like this.
Some things take awhile to get done. That's just how it is on boat projects.
Exactly. 😃 Compared with the number of *hours* that go into this build in the factory, we're right on schedule!
The greenest episode yet.
I've got the identical little belt sander...I love it and call it my "magic eraser"...lol
I just have to remember it has other speeds than turbo/high.... I get a bit crazy with it at times
Makes sense. Lower angel, less binding.
No no, go for the Danish Jefa steering instead....😊
I believe with all the experience you have now, a video that focuses on tips, products and such things would be a great assett and could gain maybe good reach compared to the "vlog/update" style of videos, since I can imagine it to be pretty hard for new viewers to get invested now. Anyways, keep up the great work, I am eager to see the boat and you evolve further ^-^
I never really feel comfortable giving any advice since we are far from experts. We try to only show how we did something --- more as an example than as a guide.
The more I watch the more it seems impossible
It’s nice seeing you getting close to finishing the interior sanding and painting. Your shoulders have got to be killing you from the overhead work.
Overhead work is never fun. 😬
would make the steering cable removable
Matt, are you going to leave a small access on cabin side to get to the pulleys on the steering cable box?
The access is through the cockpit cabinet. The area in the berth is separate to make sure no water gets in my bed :)
Saw it from the outside and realized I was wrong. You already can get to all the angles. Looks amazing
Be careful of all the chemicals. My uncle passed at 43 working at the hunter sailboat factory
Have you thought of hiring some help? It’s brave to take it all on but must be tedious. Maybe even viewers? Bring forward the splash date
The one thing we've said about this build from the beginning is that we want to complete it by ourselves. Yes, it has pushed back our launch date much further than we originally expected, but we know the sense of accomplishment when she goes in the water will be worth it.
With all that you’ve learned on this build, and skills gained. If you started from scratch again, how much time do you figure it would save?
I think we'd probably add a liner to the hull sides if I were to do it again. That alone would take probably 6 months off this build. And the other modifications we'd make for ease of build would probably take off another 6 months. Overall, at least 1 year, but I think I could get to our current stage of build in 1 year if the stars aligned and we had everything we needed when starting.
Great progress guys. What is your preference for sanders electric or air powered which have you found to be the most reliable👍
Air seems to be 100 times more reliable; does a better job sanding; and is lighter. But the sound of the air tool and compressor gets to be a bit much in an enclosed space like a boat.
✌️❤️👌
Never mind the steering, what happened to the best outro music ever..are you drinking again? should we be worried 😉👊🏻
U don't know what happened there! I checked the video, and for some reason it cut out the closing segment. 😭 The rest of the usual video is there though.
@@MJSailing no worries, I’m just having a bit of fun..love the build 🫶🏻
Plucky is going to finish his Aluminum Catamaran before you guys.
😂😊😅😮
Probably, lol. The interior of our aluminum sailboat was 10x easier to fit out than this
Plucky has a few more experienced helpers, but you could hire a couple of experienced boat builders to help Matt and Jessica if you like 😉
@@daveamies5031 They can hire locals; but choose not to. The endless sanding the same bulkhead go boring and I stopped watching for months. And now on returning and seeing them no farther along confirms my exit from their videos again. But, go ahead and watch paint dry.
At least Plucky shows progress.
@@dennispatrick4999 Dave is correct in that we're choosing not to hire helpers, even though it could get us through projects quicker and in the water much faster. We've always wanted this build to be completed by just the two of us, to prove to ourselves that we can accomplish such a feat.
Will we lose a few viewers in the meantime because they find the sanding/fairing process to boring to continue to watch week to week? Yes. And we're ok with that.
When we look back on this in 20 years we want our thoughts to be "Look at this magnificent thing we built with our own two (four) hands.". We're much less worried about thinking "Look how we held on to a few thousand extra RUclips viewers to get this project finished as quickly as possible.".
Hope that helps you see it from our side. 😉
Forget about it. Hope it don't sink.
Hi I think the tail end of this video didnt upload
That's correct. For some reason it cut out about 3 seconds before it was supposed to go into the closing song. 🤷♀️
Hmm the abrupt ending @16:47 was a bit different to your normal videos, I suspect that wasn't your intention?
Correct. For some reason the video cut off about 3 seconds before it was supposed to go into the closing song. 👸
@@MJSailing Oh well at least it was only a few seconds left and not in the middle of the video, it was odd because your videos are usually so polished that it was more noticeable
I guess it would pay to put a pinned comment saying your aware of it so you don't get lots of comments about it
no one is going to mention that the second half of the video is cut off?
Oh, I did notice that upon review, but it's 4 seconds before the video would normally go into it's closing music. 😬
How close you are to finish structural fiber glass works?
We still need to add the bow and stern sections, but besides that, I think all the structural glass work is done.
Sanding fairing jail
It's never ending. 😭
If you want to figure out how to stop your camera switching off whilst on time lapse then just say the make and model of the camera in the video and someone in the comments will know what buttons to press.
Film in non time lapse then edit in the time lapse later.
Matt tends to do that, but it takes up SO much storage space. I just have to take the time to go through the settings on our camera and make some changes.
Why would you not use hydraulic steering
It's mostly personal choice, but hydraulic steering, lacks feel when sailing, it's also very hard to get parts for in many countries, so if you have issues you could be stuck for many months waiting on parts, where as cable steering can be jury rigged with hand woven ropes if your desperate (not ideal obviously) Like everything else on a boat it's a compromise, there's no perfect solution.
For us it's the lack of steering feel with hydraulic. But it would be a lot easier to just run hydraulic hose :)
Why does it just cut off half way through a sentence, half way through a word?
For some reason it cut off the closing segment of the video. 🤷♀️ I literally had two words left to say before the episode ended, thankfully.
@@MJSailing Oh, phew. I thought there was more and my youtube was broken.
Watching you work on fiberglass makes me itch. Beautiful if well crafted but it may make you miserable.
Most of the interior has thankfully moved past that stage now and this is the last time we'll have to experience that fiberglass itch until we move to certain areas of the exterior. 😍
