I have never been on the campus because of the pandemic and everything I've been learning about UCI has been from videos and their school website. Anthro 2A and 2B are pretty easy, psych 7A/9A, music 3, there's a lot! Take it easy your first quarter though since you're just getting adjusted to everything! Bio is a killer tbh!

Loved this video just what I wanted to see, I just got admitted as a bio major. And I wanted to know how you like it so far and how you manage to do your school work.
Just know that being a bio major is rOUGH! I'm not the smartest cookie out there and you just gotta know and play your strengths. You will be tested especially first quarter, but if biology is something you really want to pursue, just try to remember why you're doing it in the first place and never lose motivation. I don't want to scare you from it, but just be aware that you'll be challenged :') managing school work honestly comes from going through it. I balance school, work, clinic, and working out. It was a lot of adjusting and learning Fall Quarter, but it got easier Winter Quarter. It gets better, just remember that!

yess I love the area! Irvine is a rly nice suburban area and there's plenty of good food plazas (Diamond Jamboree) our shopping outlets (Irvine Spectrum) I think on weekends they have shuttle buses that take you there!

You mentioned that you started in the Summer, so I'm guessing there are positions specifically for undergraduates/freshmen, but how exactly did you find this position? Thanks a lot :)
Hey Martin! So toward the end of my senior year, I found a website with bio labs and the PI's emails so I literally just cold emailed a whole bunch hahah luckily, one replied that they weren't looking but would be willing to take me on! It's pretty tedious but you only need one yes :) Also don't sell yourself short because you're just a freshman! Many don't get research experience until their 3rd year. Hope this helps!
I think your experience depends on what lab you're in- each lab is so different. My lab is a smaller lab, so there's less students working there. I honestly haven't been putting in the ideal time into it and maybe that's why I'm not getting the most out of it. That's something I hope to change come spring and summer. Research isn't something I want to do as a career but I think it's very helpful in the sense that I will be able to get experience in a different area of science. So far, since I've just been learning, it's been pretty boring not gonna lie. But I know that as time goes on and I learn how to do everything, I'll be able to do more things and have more responsibility and I'll enjoy it more :)
I think I'm gonna make a video on this soon, but just a quick response: it's really what you make of it (what you join, how you interact in class, etc). I know a lot of people that have many friends that are commuters and I also know many people that don't have any friends that are dorming. It's really what you make of your experience there :)
I believe the application process is very similar if not almost identical to the regular "straight from high school" process, so familiarize yourself with the prompts ahead of time. Other than maintaining a decent GPA, I would say (at least from my experience) UCI likes to see applicants that are involved in things other than purely academics. I had good grades but I was not the crazy hardcore student, but I was on the track team, did a lot of community service and held leadership positions. (Opposite from that, I knew applicants with way better stats than me but was not involved in many activities and did not get in) In my essay, I was able to show how they contributed to the person I am today. And because of that, I honestly think that's what helped me get in! All in all, college admissions is really confusing and it's hard to really predict if you're "safe" enough to get in. Good luck! Hey Emma! I would say the only reason it would be harder to make friends sis because you're not constantly surrounded by the same people (aka suitemates and roommates). For some it's harder to make friends bc you have to make more of an effort and go out of your way to do so. But, I would suggest joining a club you're passionate about. You'll meet like-minded people that you'll probably vibe with :)
Hi I am going to attend uci in fall of 2019 as a biological sciences major (but I might change to another science major )and I was wondering if you could give me some insight on what your classes for your major are like, any advice for me regarding this major and classes! hey girlie welcome to the bio fam! It depends on what you want to do as a career. Just make sure you're getting the prereqs for whatever it is you want to do. Tbh bio is hard LOL like you may expect but it's just crazy how intense it is and esp bc people at Irvine are hella smart and the class is a bell curve! I don't want to scare you away but I'm just letting you know what's ahead of you.. first year classes are pretty general, you take bio and general chem as your main major required classes and besides that you're free to take whatever else you want (GEs, writing, etc). Since I am a commuter, having a general chunk of my classes all at once in the day saves me from spending weird 5 hour gaps at school so that's how I like to do it.. but yeah don't worry, this is an exciting part of your journey so don't forget to relax and enjoy it!

Hi! I think pre-med at any school will be tough and just crazy in the content you're learning so just prepare yourself for it! Just know you're not going to be okay 100% of the time and that's ok, it's part of the process :) It is manageable to get A's, as in there are people that are bio majors that do get A's haha I am not one of them if I'm being honest. And I cold-emailed a bunch of research professors until one of them replied to me. It's not a paid research position but getting paid doesn't really matter to me. I'd say it's the experience you gain from that exposure is more valuable than anything else. And I haven't heard of anyone I know that has a paid research position at UCI. Hope that helps!

What are the other schools you're deciding between? Honestly, I don't think UCI is "dead" but I wouldn't say it's the most social school compared to other schools like SDSU or San Jose State. Like any other school, there are different crowds and it's what you make of it. If you want a more social scene, I recommend joining orgs and making the most of your time on campus. There are plenty of activities on campus, but if you're just wondering what the overall student vibe is just from walking from class to class I would say UCI is a 6 on a scale of 1-10 of a "social school." Like not everyone is going to be down to talk and say hi to each other on the way to class if that's what you're looking for LOL
Hello! so my friends and I were just weighing the pros and cons between going to community college vs going into a 4- year right away. We didn't necessarily say it would've been better to do one or the other but just wishing we would've considered other options than just doing what is "normal" and "looks good" and going straight into a university. @@chidinmao9622 I don't regret my decision (anymore) because I did a lot, especially my first quarter here. GPA-wise, it may have been smarter to go to CSULB but that's about it. It's normal to think "what if" but don't dwell on it for too long; it eats you up.
I don't think grade deflation is very common at UCI, maybe a professor here and there will lower your grade at the end of the quarter. But very uncommon, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. However, most pre-req classes is graded on a bell curve and professors usually can only give a certain amount of A's, B's, C's, etc
hi! I don't think it matters, just whichever you're comfortable with using. I know plenty of students with one or the other and I haven't heard anything bad about them. I personally have a windows based one! (surface laptop)

Join a club. That's the easiest place to make firends.

Do they allow freshman to bring their cars even if they’re staying on campus?
Yeah, there's just designated parking that I think is further and it's more expensive for the permit :')
