Welcome back to the Defense news channel for a discussion about Today marked a significant milestone for the U.S. Army as it revealed the inaugural batch of M10 Booker combat vehicles during a dedication ceremony at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The unveiling signals the transition of the M10 program into the Production and Deployment (PD) phase.
The dedication of the M10 Booker Combat Vehicle paid tribute to the valiant service and sacrifice of two distinguished soldiers: Pvt. Robert D. Booker, a Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, and Staff Sgt. Stevon A. Booker, a Distinguished Service Cross recipient from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Their bravery and commitment to duty were commemorated by their family members during the event.
The M10 Booker Combat Vehicle is the U.S. Army’s newest tracked ground combat vehicle and will integrate into the Infantry Brigade Combat Team. It is poised to enhance infantry brigades’ capabilities by providing improved survivability and early threat detection, without compromising maneuverability in diverse terrains. This light tank is transportable in a C-17. It's mobile artillery that can go in with airborne troops and marines, long before large landing ships bring in M-1's.

Without significant protection from drone attack or complete air superiority above the battlefield, these may just be drone fodder.
Something that is being learned the hard way in Ukraine right now.

You know something? The WW 2 "crushed bomber cap" was a style thing during that era. It was for Army Airforce crews and pilots to show that they completed more than 50 missions. Even Chuck Yeager and Robin Olds were told to drop the use of that when they returned to the States. As a matter of fact, Olds was told to shave his famous moustache when he returned from Vietnam as well. This Army campaign to revive the old uniforms is a bit misguided. Of course, the U.S. Army did buy the Bradley Fighting Vehicle which was a scandal in the late 70's early 80's. But who really remembers anything?

    What about drones?

    • @fludblud
      @fludblud 5 месяцев назад +1

Getting those too, but Ukraine has shown that despite all the drones you still need good tanks and IFVs to take and hold ground (as long as they dont explode at the slightest touch like T-72s and BMPs)

What the guys on the ground need is an armoured vehicle that can counter the threat of drones and move with the armour. Currently the USA is buying all the 1970's and 1980's made gepards and PRTL's in existence for this very purpose.
There is no modern equiv. available from western companies. The Anti Air counters we do have are either ridiculously expensive or wishful thinking.
I mean targeting an drone with an massive gun for several seconds to block the signal?
Seriously? that's like shouting PLEASE SHELL ME!
      Or using anti air missiles.....
Patriots? yes they work. They'd better at 1-2 million a pop.
The Israëli system is really nice. still 50-100k a pop though.
There is one very interesting solution though.
Again from the germans which just have the most experience with these things.
The Mantis anti air system which rheinmetall is trying to turn into an modular turret solution for their IFV's
      The project is called Lance.
      But it's not ready.

I'm sure they're aware of it, EW bubble may protect it or they could deploy AI drones that just counter enemy drones like I've seen starting to b deployed in trials

We do have dedicated EW vehicles to go along with the armor. New antidrone vehicles are already in limited production. They can also shoot down missiles, rockets, mortars and some artillery shells too.

    • @nouser129

The US have been developing drones for years. We are not Russia. In case you missed it, Boeing had tested stealth super drone, combat drone, fueling drone, bombing drone, …. By the way, by the time, the Defense and its contractors announced something, that news is probably 2-3 years old. I’m sure we helped the Ukrainian with their drone technology.

    • @verdebusterAP
      @verdebusterAP 5 месяцев назад +1

There are plenty of ways to deal with drones
Ideally for the booker, they need adopt the AbramXs 30mm with dual feed mounted to CROWS and pair it with advanced APS
The dual feed would be HEDP for general use and Airburst rounds for C-UAS, anti-missile
The APS would need a 4 panel sensor as well auto engagement
That would be the best hard kill option
As for EW, its easier but the problem there is while EW can jam communication, if the drone still has enough inertia, it can still on target and still hit
There are EW that can fry the drone electronics but that requires power
So question is how much power does the Booker have to spare

  • @juanlugo7492

This thing makes more sense for the USMC than the Army the Army should pursuit a vehicle with as much automation possible to reduce crew size so the vehicle could be lightweight enough to be Air droppable and enough fire power to back up airborne troops but for the marine Corps would fit in incredibly well an LCAC could fit two of them might be light enough to clear a beach landing

Of course it's not a light tank. It's a MEDIUM TANK! WT#? This heavier than a Pershing is it not? It's got an assault capable gun that's bigger than most medium tanks used to have, etc. So the Army is certainly justified in dissuading us from calling it a Light Tank. I'm guilty myself. It's totally wrong.

The Bradley barely survived that encounter with the T-90. It was the crews' quick thinking and excellent marksmanship with an inferior firepower that defeated the Russian tank crew. The T-90 was still viable other than losing it's external sighting components. Don't knock new technology if you haven't tried it yourself.

Don't see the point of the M10 as you already have a winning combination of the Abrams tank and Bradley APC. With the Abrams X coming soon the M10 seems a waste of taxpayer money.
