- Gabe is autistic and nonspeaking. He now has a love hate relationship with the beach after years of just loving it. We don’t know what changed exactly, but Gabe does experience anxiety occasionally when we take him.
This time we drove out to Jones Beach on Long Island when we came to visit my family in NY over the winter break. I crossed my fingers as we parked hoping he would get out of the car so he could see, hear, and feel all the things he loves about the beach. He got out and took his time walking down to the ocean. His bonus mom and I tried to go at his pace, but sometimes he needs a push in the right direction. He made it to the ocean! He was happy and we got to spend the afternoon in the sun! I'm sitting here with tears running down my cheeks. I know of these small accomplishments. You feel proud as a parent and/or a mentor. His demeanor through out the video showed his anxiety yet his own hope to carry on, and carry on he did with your encouragement. Having a non verbal autistic child till he was 12, when somehow a light switch went in the right direction, I hope and pray it happens for all of you. I also pray for you Moms when it does, because you will need it. The verbal dam will open, memories will open, and you will relive personal history like you never have before, as well as personal now needed needs, wants and demands. It was tough then, but how I laugh now. For the love of Gabe, Please continue. For him, for you, and for all kids and adults with autism!

The way he experiences life is as if he's hearing music and dancing and playing an instrument. He's on a higher plane than the rest of us. He's amazing

I like how he got so excited by arriving at the beach and hearing what he was about to do..and then all of a sudden..he's like, no...and then gets back into it! His smiles are worth every day! Stay strong Gabe. Stay strong mom. Stay strong sis. You guys are a blessing 💜

He is such a sweet, good-looking kid. So proud of him, the way he is making such an effort to branch out and try new things. He has an awesome Mom!
What a Beautiful Soul Gabe is! And looking at him you would think that he was a young baseball player. But that smile on his face is just pure joy and brings a smile to my face.
Seeing him doing these little but big things makes me feel like a proud mother.. he’s got such an amazing aura about him, I just can’t quite put my finger on what it is but I feel he’s truly a living Angel 🥺💙
My heart melts every time I watch Gabe. The joy on his face when he relaxes that little bit, I feel a connection with him, I don't know why, I live in Australia and have 2 Autistic Grandsons, 16 and 14. Maybe he just reminds me of the joy and love they bring to everyone. Keep that young man doing what he does to make the world smile.
Your so fortunate to have him, and he's fortunate to have you both.
Gabe is most def a Celestial being, so, he's way above most people spiritually. You may not understand what I mean by that, but before he came here, he would have been highly regarded. His destiny is one that everyone lives for, but Gabe is promised it, that will not change.

Gabe is so living in the moment. He moves along adapting himself to where he is in time. He is part of his environment.
The sun on his face. The sand under his feet. The sounds of the waves in his ears. The smell in the air. The view that he sees as he changes direction. The wind is his dancing partner.
It's so beautiful observing him interact with his life on his terms. What a unique perception he has as we watch him experience his walk on the beach! ❤

Gabe is really good at giving high-fives and sometimes uses his hands to communicate. I bet he could learn some words in sign language.

Thank you 4 sharing your family life’s experience with us. I’m a grandmother to my own lil Gabriel of thirteen and his behavior is so alike . We live in California and there are days we drive out All goes well n some days he won’t get off the car , But I just keep going and glad for the time I have with him no matter what , thank you for the motivation he is my one and only with no siblings so I try and keep him busy with long drives and hiking site seeing , ❤

Hope you enjoyed our beach. I am not a beach person,but when my girls were little we went to Jones beach often. Gabe has his own ideas where he wants to go. That is a pleasant thought, but untrue. Plenty of autistic people and others with special needs are born to parents who aren't up to taking care of them.

My beautiful 11 year old nephew and godson Freddie is autistic and he has made me such a better man. He’s verbal, but I see many similarities. Looks like he's really enjoying himself. It's a good thing he likes wearing sunglasses now. That's the best place to wear them, at the beach! Maybe by summertime he'll be dipping his feet in the water.
I'm so happy he got to enjoy his time at the beach. My son, also on the autism spectrum (with low verbal communication) also has a love hate relationship with the beach. The last dozen times we've gone have been pleasant & I'm hoping it sticks for a while. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. My son is still very young & seeing Gabe do all these things really gives me hope & perspective for my own boy

Gabe is such a carefree beautiful soul. He made me smile when he walked a different direction, he has a curious mind of his own. Wish my 27 yo Autistic Spectrum son could meet your son at the beach there, they’d have a great time together. My son used to have repetitive movements, loved sand and water, It’s been amazing to watch him grow into an adult. I can tell Gabe loves the sand & water too, enjoy the journey you have with him, every day is a blessing 🙏❤️

"Long" is definitely the right word for the beach there! That's a long walk through the sand to get to the water. I'm glad you've found fun things to do out in the world as a family!
My brother is autistic and he loves the beach, but we've only been there when it is warm and he could wear swimwear and build sandcastles. Never even crossed my mind to take him there when it was cold, so I see a trip coming on this weekend. Thank you for posting these videos of Gabe. He is about the same age as my brother.

I believe these children are God's little Angels put on earth.I have one of my own.8 years old, and he has truly opened my eyes, mind and heart up a lot than I could have ever imagined.God bless Gabe and all of God's Angels here on earth, helping to keep us on the right path back to GOD.

Maybe his getting social anxiety? Getting more socially conscious(Mine started when I was 11 I have aspergers too)? Who knows. I love the beach but freak out when theres so many people. Anyway well done Gabe for being so brave.

Gabe just wasn't into his beach walk today. That's okay. Some days it does seem to uplift him so. Today he doesn't seem as interested. Tomorrow he may need it again! Keep up the good work offering to him!

Wow, that is crazy. I know you guys are gonna make fun of me that I didn’t know there was a beach in New York? That looks like a winter day for me in Phoenix but ever you would not need a coat . We get about 10 days that will hit below freezing at night but most of the days are in the 60s like today you’ll probably be 65 or 67 on the last few days with a lot of rain which is very unusual here and that’s why I love it when it’s gray and rainy here believe you’re not you can get very tired of sunshine all the time and we probably have about 340 days of sunshine here a year

@Joe Glenn - There are many beautiful beaches in New York City and especially on Long Island. We’re very fortunate here. Our summers here start in May and can go through September. It can get very warm in NYC. It’s not unusual for temps to be in the 80s and 90s here in the summer. I prefer the fall and winter. I don’t like the heat at all. But the beach is beautiful at any time of year.
Hi Nikki and Caroline, it touches me to see how Gabe is happy on the beach, his smile is so contagious I have to smile all the time, do you have the beach in front of the door, so you live where that is? oh I would be so happy if I had this in front of the door, I'm a child of the water my holiday always goes to the North Sea up to the island Baltrum there I feel comfortable so I live in the Hanover area in Lower Saxony the way to the sea is 300km = 186.4114 miles, thank you for this nice trip to the beach with gift, that was great.

Lots of things that didn't bother us as kids start to do so as we get older, I'm sure it's just one of those things! I watched certain horror movies for fun as a child that I can't watch without a cushion as an adult 😂 Not the same thing I know but little kids are much more care free in general. Like I didn't care about getting sand in my shoes as a kid, now I can't bare it.
Has he tried walking barefoot on the sand? I love the feeling. I can certainly see why someone would dislike it though.
