In 2013, I lived thru cancer during this racing, often watching in the hospital while receiving chemo. As a sailor not allowed to do what you love most after breathing, it was a great show and I was fortunate enough to never be sick in the process.
Very nice edit showing the story of a great comeback. In all fairness to the Kiwis, it would have been more objective to also include highlights of the 3 races they were leading but were canceled due to wind and time limits..
Good Point John. There is a video somewhere here that shows what you mention. I will try to find it and give you the link. There is a lot of videos to search again but I will look for it!
@@FMejiaLeonJODIDO I remember the one where NZ were going around that last turn for home and it was called off - at match point too! Don't remember any others though......Perhaps they were much less dramatic due to being early on the races.
Watching in 2021 as the current Americas Cup gets close to being won I clearly remember watching the 34th edition. For the Americans to be 8-1 down and not give up - simply one of the most astonishing displays of self-belief and focus the sporting world has ever seen. I have taken life lessons from this - NEVER. GIVE. UP. NEVER.
Race 8 in AC 36. NZ 4&1/2 minutes down in a 25 min race, won by 4 minutes... and eventually took the cup. Because they learnt from 2013 and never gave up. Never give up.
Best Summer Ever! Thanks Oracle Team USA, Congratulations, and I can hardly wait for AC35. I can't help but keep looking over my shoulder on SF Bay hoping to see J. Spithill and crew coming around under the bay bridge!
I'm from NZ, this was a tough one to stomach after feeling close to 100% certain we would win, and then came the slow torture of a comeback that got increasingly more ominous as Oracle began to wring the full potential out of their boat. I remember the last race - with the 2 teams both on match point - it sure felt like we had absolutely no chance and we were dead right. What a great fightback it was. Oracle was unrecognizable from the team that started the Cup off with 2 losses.
People don't seem to talk much about Sir Ben Ainsley as the NZ team were totally lost outplayed and out manoeuvred until he got on the boat. The Americans were beaten until Ben joined the boat," says Sir Knox-Johnston. "Ben may be risking his life if he visits New Zealand, but there's no question it was Ben's arrival which changed the chemistry completely." A quote their from an inspirational person. The fact is team oracle were dead in the water, they WERE going to loose until Ben joined. GO BEN!! 😂
He played a part, and he is an incredible sailor, but it was the improved boat speed, figuring out how to foil upwind, and the much improved tacking, that killed NZ mostly I think. Once that was figured out, any reasonable tactician was going to look great. For instance, Ray Davies, the NZ tactician looked like a tactical genius in the first 10 or so races, until Oracle figured out how to sail their boat. After that he looked pretty average.
If we go by that logic, then Sir Ben Ainsley should have been bringing it back to the UK as the team were totally lost, outplayed and out manoeuvred until he got on the boat. The Americans were beaten until Ben joined the boat," says Sir Knox-Johnston. "Ben may be risking his life if he visits New Zealand, but there's no question it was Ben's arrival which changed the chemistry completely."
Greatest comeback in sports history - period. Sad part was that the follow up had key members of this fantastic team sailing with other teams and thus the defeat and eventual return to NZL of the Auld Cup.
they had a two race penalty at the start of the series. So before the first race Oracle was at -2 and NZ was at 0 in a best of 9 series. Oracle needed to win 11 races to keep the cup while NZ only had to win 9
Great comeback true, but a real comeback is when you pick yourself up after a heavy defeat and return, lesson learnt, and comeback and smash the champ who beat you, as Team NZ did at Bermuda, after the horror of San Francisco...... whereas Oracle's response to being beaten in Bermuda by TNZ was to throw in the towel, Mr Ellison promptly throwing his toys out of the sandpit so to speak. Learning to be a good loser is one of the principles of being a winner.
Wouldn't it have been nice if there was an American on the U.S.A team. Oh they did, the tactician they fired. They should call this the Oracle cup, not the America's cup.
+bparno It's not called the "America's Cup" because of the nationality of the sailors. It's been called the "America's Cup" since 1851 when the yacht "America" of the New York Yacht Club won the 100 Guinea Cup, which was hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron of England. The New York Yacht Club took the cup back to America, and the race was renamed "The America's Cup".
@@FMejiaLeonJODIDO Within the rules? your kidding right? Oracle went to court to get the rules changed to allow for the new tech they wanted to use. It was about who had more money. Oracle had financial backing in the courts which Team New Zealand could not match. Had Oracle continued to race with the equipment they started with they wouldnt have had a shit show of winning. Americas Cup bought and paid for and thats the truth of it.

turning on some software to manufacture a comeback
Remember watching these races first thing every morning.
Defiance - a powerful Motivator

Awesome! I had so much fun going from frustration from the two-race penalty to elation of this comeback! The best sports fun ever!

Never gets old. This was so AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
Jimmy Spithill. Sledger extraordinaire.
Music at the end is "Power To Progress" Darren Loveday & Stephen Loveday
Amazing. Doesn't get much better than this!
ABSOLUTELY
the greatest spectacle in the history of sports in any discipline.
I heard they hit over 50 mph; 47-48 knots. We will never see a more spectacular comeback in our lifetime.
This clip is the best ways to show those who are unfamiliar with our sport what it's all about, and to get them keyed up for Bermuda.
Can't whit till the 35th Americas cup go team USA!
Wow! I was there on the pier and other places! Even on stage after finish due to security errors thinking my press pass was a team pass!

Meh, Emirates will get them next time. I'm an American citizen but I was born in New Zealand so I could really say I won either way. :D
Sam M. you were right.
Congrats, you're a psychic! Or should we say, an oracle...
Una rimonta che ha dell’incredibile 😮
Team USA - with a Kiwi skipper and a Brit tactician… only three Americans on the final boat.
Perfect race.
Pardon My Take brought me here.
So with an Aussie skipper, did Australia actually win the AC?
If we go by that logic, then Sir Ben Ainsley should have been bringing it back to the UK as the team were totally lost, outplayed and out manoeuvred until he got on the boat.

Nail-biting fightback. I could not believe the Aussie skipper saying 'to come back from 7-1 makes it all the better!' Amazing mental toughness.

Sweeter then pie.
what was them music at the end ?
Why was it "-1" for the oracle team at some point?

***** thanks!
+robm425 It wasn't a "best of 9". It was a "first to 9". If it were a best of nine then they wouldve only need win 5 races.
Get stronger.
GO ORACLE............... GO AMERICA........... GO SF GIANTS!
Team USA
Je te l'avais pas dit!?

THERE WERE 3 AMERICAN DUDES. GOT IT?
Man , this was the biggest choke , I remembered the disbelief that followed ......... Thankyou Bermuda ! Redemption!
lots of pasty people
rigged
Uh actually that announcer was wrong. The America's Cup is not in America. It's a sad day when our sport hero's are traitors.
YES IT IS!!!!!!!!!!
Not exactly informative!
THEY DIDNT DESERVE IT NZ DID NOT USE AUTOMATIC SHIT THEY DID
ANOTHER BITTER KIWI? WOW.............. ALWAYS THE SAME........... ANYONE WHO DEFEATS YOU DO NOT DESERVE IT
