This is absolutely brilliant, the best car in its segment or dare I say best overall 'transportation device' currently on sale. Excellent styling, without bulbous proportions, very small overhangs, incredibly fresh, reasonably priced and appealing to people of all ages. It's not pretending to be a rugged off-roader or 'macho SUV', just a comfortable medium sized vehicle with a hatch, good ground clearance and easy ingress and egress.

Agree with everything you say Matt - except …..I bought a 2022 model plagued with charging/ battery failure. Check on the internet and it seems to be a very common problem with year 22 cars. Mine is in for repair - again- and the hire car company who have a small fleet of these have exactly the same issue. Have Volvo resolved it.? No idea but I am selling my car when I get it back. The memory of complete power failure is still too fresh in my mind.
I got Mild Hybrid 2021, and it dzīves me crazy. Everything is ok with the car, except cracking noise when braking at small speed or maneuvering in place. Interesting that you can not find this information in reviews, but only in xc40 owners forums.
I test drove one today, I found it to be very overpriced for what you actually get. The one I got my hands on was a R-design T4 AWD, my first though was that the driver seat is very comfortable but there were several features of this car that really grind my gears.. 1. The gearbox is one of the worst in the market, it doesn't know what gear it should be in and it hesitates when flooring it. 2. Central touchscreen is a nightmare to use on a bumpy road. It also lacks physical buttons for AC controls and heating in the seats. 3. The large 19" rims on the R-design was very noisy making it incredibly tiresome driving on the motorway. 4. The ride in the back is very tough and you don't want to spend any longer periods of time there. The backrest was very hard and the suspension made me jump about in the back seat like I was in a roller coaster. Considering what you actually get, you're better of buying a VW T-Roc or similar which are lower priced yet higher quality. Edit: Test drove a XC40 D3 FWD with 18" normal rims and the ride was much quieter. The diesel is also a better engine due to it's silence and low down torque that the petrol Volvos are completely missing. I still stand with my point that a T-roc is a better car thanks to it's dual clutch transmission and lower price.

Great review, Matt. To me it's absolutely crazy how manufactures put shiny, black plastic in the areas that are most likely to be scuffed and smudged. Namely around the cupholders, phone chargers and infotainment areas. It's more annoying than fake exhausts!
You literally mentioned every pet peeve I have with that car. Except for how big the turning circle is and how the gearbox feels out of tune with the engine. On the T2 it remains in gear for far too long, it's actually quicker if you shift manually. Apart from that though, mighty fine car.
