  • A good amount of samples and Ensoniq presets used in the Herzeleid album.
If you want these samples, contact me on Discord: _teclas.
Flake used an Ensoniq EPS-16 PLUS in studio, and an Ensoniq ASR-10R in live and probably in studio. Flake also used an AKAI S3200 both live and studio.
Thanks to Rammstein Keyboard for recording me a lot of audios, go check his channel: / @-rammstein_keyboard-

@dudumil0503 I'd say the keyboard was more prominent in the first two albums in terms of creating a riff/groove (laichzeit, du riechst so gut, wollt ihr, buck dich, eifersucht). Whereas in the later albums it was just as present, but had a different function. Like in Mein Teil, Amerika and Spring, it's used more as a droning background synth. Still present in later albums, just serving a different purpose

    •  9 месяцев назад +5

@@neilbeaton9498There are definitely more layers and a more frequent use of synthesizers and samples on the first two albums. Not even debatable. The following releases use real choir ensemble and orchestras, as well as fewer layers of synths. The first album in particular has the synth doubling every riff being played.

Holy shit... absolutely 10/10! I was one of the few people on the internet along with (Ramm Stefan0x/Stefano Flake and Hokkaido666 among others) who got massively into Rammstein patch/sample/preset hunting back in 2009 and started a small collaboration to discover more, to the point where at least a couple of us bought Ensoniq ASR-10 samplers. I had 4 at one point, and still own a beautiful ASR-10 rack unit made from spare parts. Quite possibly one of the most amazing instruments I've ever played, on par with plugging a Gibson/ESP Paul Landers signature guitar into a SansAmp PSA-1/GT2, or running a Status Graphite S2 bass into a Human Gear Animato (the equivalent real deal rig used by Chris Wolstenholme of Muse, my other favourite band). Get the playing/settings/mixing just right and it's a new dimension of fun as a musician!
Rammstein's keyboards got me into music 14 years ago, but I never got around to sharing more than a few videos with the world. I got into guitar pretty quickly, and that led to focusing on writing my own music, but I'll never forget where I came from: Rammstein keyboards, and deep appreciation of Flake's work! I did dream of making videos of the same calibre as yours one day, but I think I'll leave that to you :)
My one offering that I can hold up proudly is a painstakingly crafted distortion/sample combination created on the ASR-10 using hidden layers of sounds that I have absolute and total confidence Flake used for Frühling in Paris (the clicking loop sound gives away which string preset he fed into the DIST+REV+COMP effect). It captures the general vibe of the "Flake solo" perfectly with some alterations to the sample run through it, i.e. Das Alte Leid, Weidmann's Heil, Ich Tu Dir Weh, but it's a dead match for Frühling. ruclips.net/video/G7QkrqnbhSI/видео.htmlsi=vu2H2FA0OSHLSQci
Keep up the stunning work, you're a true inspiration for every person who wants to understand Rammstein's keyboards.

Thank you very much for the comment! I also commented not so long ago in some of your videos, and I actually feel happy to see you here. I actually got a lot of software, like Omnisphere, Trilian and shit, only because Flake used it haha. I also wanted to buy an ASR, but the prices, are just an absurd, I won't spend more than 1000€ on a 31 year old sampler, when I have hardware and software that does way better than it. If you check my LIFAD samples video, you'll notice that for ITDW, FIP, and Waidmanns Heil, Flake created his own patch, I really love ASR distortion, and it's amazing that Flake used a 31 year old sampler even in 2019, he sadly didn't use it in the Zeit album, he only used 2 Nord Stage 2 EX.

It's probably a self made patch on the Ensoniq EPS 16 Plus/ASR-10, because it uses the Ensoniq distortion. Or maybe it's from an Ensoniq disk/floppy.

Hey! This is one question I spent way, way too much time finding out the answer to, so here's the secret to the "Flake solo" (as heard in Das Alte Leid, Wo Bist Du, Hilf Mir, Ich Tu Dir Weh, Weidmann's Heil, Frühling in Paris, Hallomann and possibly a couple more I'm forgetting)! One day I will do a full tutorial showing how the sound is made in detail, as it's really obvious from the details that Flake uses a very similar method for all of them. There are all sorts of little quirks and bits of trivia that show how Flake used the ASR-10 to its full potential, so it'll be a great watch for any Rammstein keyboard fan.
The sound here (ruclips.net/video/G7QkrqnbhSI/видео.htmlsi=bKqpLqRmEd9KhCi_) is the one I'll be referring to, as it's clearly the one he used, but all the Flake solos follow the same rough method: running a choir/string/synth pad into the effects unit of the ASR-10.
The exact effect I can't remember off the top of my head, but if anyone is interested I'll fire up my ASR-10 when I've finished moving my studio. It's essentially a very harsh distortion with a reverb (and or chorus?), and a sweepable wah-like filter that is carefully assigned to the mod wheel to only allow a tiny sweet spot of the wah to be used. DIST+CHOR+REV and DIST+WAH+REV are two I think may be the ones he used, but I'd have to double check. In the video you can see me playing the mod wheel along with the sound, you just move it around until it sounds like the original. The biggest secret sauce component is the exact effect, tweaked just right (having the original Frühling sample fed through the effect made it a lot easier). It has a chillingly vocal quality that is quite frankly disturbing on Hallomann, where Flake uses the effect possibly the most artistically in his entire career.
As for the sample fed into the effect, it's one of the crappy sounding samples from the first Ensoniq tutorial floppy disk. Hidden in an unused layer (and only found by playing around enough to find it) is an airy synth choir pad that sounds kinda familiar, even without the effect. When the sample is run through the effect, the loop point of the sample becomes quite obvious, and when the loop point is moved into a different position (making the loop jumpy and totally audible) it has the exact "skipping" sound heard in the last few seconds of Frühling: all the proof I need to be 100% certain it was used for that song. Same sample, same effect, only the exact parameters of the effect and the playing are variables, and you can only go so wrong when the other two sound so spot on.
The same effect with a stacked string pad run through it produces a sound that comes very close to the solo in Wo Bist Du (ruclips.net/video/kBhKmyY5uCI/видео.htmlsi=WVaq1NBiZPsfpG7O). It's not the exact preset, but honestly, it sounds so full and lush to play that I'm totally happy with it.
I kinda love how most people don't even pay much attention to Rammstein's keyboards, and even those who do could quite reasonably assume the "Flake solo" is a tweaked synth preset for sample (like many sounds actually are), but it couldn't be further from the truth. It's only possible to recreate with a physical ASR-10 (possibly an Ensoniq DP/2/4/etc effects rack), and a very good idea what sounds to use. I spent a couple of years exploring the ASR-10 to find all this, and it's so cool to be able to finally share some info about the mystique of Flake's solo! Discovering the intro sound to Donnaukinder in NI FM8 right after Liebe ist für alle da was released was fun... but there's only so much enjoyment in finding a preset. Following Flake's footsteps while learning the ASR-10 was something that was worth the hard work of finding/buying/repairing a functioning unit.
      Enjoy!

@@Corvid Holy shit that was wordy. But very informative, thanks!
"It's only possible to recreate with a physical ASR-10". Okay, so I won't be able to get that preset unless I get rich and interested enough to get into it. That's a shame because this particular sound (from Das Alte Leid solo) sounds weirdly nostalgic to me, I keep thinking for the first half of it that it's a sample from that old cartoon from the 40's I saw a long time ago with crazy dramatic strings mildly distorted by the tape quality. I thought it might be fun to utilize in the future, but I guess not. Still, I appreciate your help and hope you'll make more amazing musical discoveries in the future
