Ruffian (April 17, 1972--July 7, 1975) was an American champion thoroughbred racehorse. Ruffian is considered by many to be the greatest female racehorse in history. en.wikipedia.or...
She belongs in every top ten list of the greatest ever!!! We lost her much to soon!! If this video doesn’t bring tears to your eyes you have no heart!! She was something special!!!!!!!
She will never be forgotten, she was a wonderful beauty with speed talent and everything you want in a race horse.. i cried so hard.. because she still running in heaven !
I will always remember this race. I was 12 years old. I had watched a few of her races. And my brother and I had all but a bet on who would win...After that. I didnt watch a race for several years. I kept the newspaper clipping for well over a decade. I cried when she broke down and again when she had to be put down. She was and always will be my favorite racer.
She was buried whole, just as Secretariat would be years later. A fitting tribute. She could not have been bred to Secretariat, I think, because Bold Ruler was his father and her grandfather, but imagine what that pairing would have produced if they had not been so closely related. Such a tragic loss.
I have told people something that they must study to know why I say it. “I will run on three legs and heart any time I must”. This has always been in honor of Miss Ruffian
That is beautiful! I would like to adopt that motto as well! “The main issue in life is not the victory, but the fight. The essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.” This is from a medal that was awarded to the great “Seabiscuit” during his career. It was for outstanding courage. Like Ruffian, he never gave up. I’m so glad I found your comment. I’m sitting in my car, in tears….
Ruffian saved Barbaro, since she inspired vets to use a pool to awaken horses from surgery so when they kick around they don't get hurt. Ruffian kicked her stall once she woke up and that's what killed her.

I have watched almost every triple crown race since I was born. Granted I don't remember the first few, but I have a vague memory of Riva Ridge (age 4). After the Match, my mother swore we would never watch another race. I missed 1976, but by 1977, I took over the dial for Seattle Slew and have only missed a few since. My mother's first race after was Mine That Bird's Kentucky Derby. Thankfully, she waited until after Barbaro, or she might never have seen another after 2006.
I was 19 when it happened. I was a Ruffian fan, not just because of the whole male/female thing. Shenanigans, her mom, was a daughter of Native Dancer. The Dancer was one of my faves, just below Man O' War. I didn't like Bold Ruler, so it was completely on her Native Dancer blood and her own brilliance. The first Kentucky Derby I can remember was '63, when Chatuegay won. I wanted to be a jockey when I was 12. I looked up to Bill Shoemaker, Braulio Baeza, Jacinto, Eddie Arcaro. This effected me in such a way that I actually missed Seattle Slew and Affirmed. I didn't come back until 1980, when I saw a bright chestnut filly finish 3rd in the Wood Memorial and knew I was looking at that year's Kentucky Derby winner, weeks before the Derby. The fact that that filly was also ridden by Jacinto just cemented my renewal. I am STILL a horse racing fan and will be until I die. However, I want to see the horror end. I never have been able to understand people who sell to slaughter, or strike, or starve, or completely are without feelings for one of the most majestic and noble of animals. I still cry when I watch, or read, about Ruffian. RIP, o' wonderful one! You are still remembered and loved!
Didn't she hit her leg on the starting gate? Saw that in the movie or heard it somewhere many years ago. Best filly ever- a rocket ship... zenyatta would have never caught her.
t a No, her side shoulder hit the gate ... there was birds on the track and miss place her footing when the birds toke off. Horses have thin legs it not hard for then to snap plus when horses run that use that outer front leg more for push sprint that is why most front legs are broken rather the hide legs
Mrs HorrorQueen her butt hit the gate on the start , watch the video. She came out of the gate wrong but then straighten out ( that could cause unbalance on her fragile legs which could have also been a reason to the breakdown. )
However, the part where you see her hobbling with the cast on, that must have been done backwards as it was her right leg she broke and not her left. This part is at about 1:05
Ruffian and barbaro probably having a match race somewhere out there! ruffian would have been horse of the decade if that match race never happened.. yes i just said it! big red and everyone at the meadows and claiborne will agree.. ruffian would have been undefeated her entire career.. she was a freak horse that comes once in a million years! speed and emdurance plus a heart! did not want to lose!
Crackpot Chavakokang that’s speculation but she was well on her way to not ever losing, she was a very special horse that’s for sure!!! She definitely belongs in the top 10 greatest ever
she was related to secretariat, the genes with secretariat, it can cause problems.. ruffian was the best filly .. but her legs wasnt any good , they were like glass they were fragile . the best racehorse genes can cause health problems for being a stud to continue the legacy of another horse
She was a big horse, and pushed too hard, too young....the bones and muscles of a 3 year old horse, especially if they are big, are simply not strong enough, and NOT ready to do that distance at full speed.......What a waste...When will we EVER learn?
Henry Ciesielski, Secretariat did that distance at full speed in record time and didn't break down. Ruffian was great, but tragedy was in her blood. Both her sires had leg injuries.
Henry Ciesielski if you noticed a bird took off right in front of her right where she took the misstep and she broke down, it would seem that had more to do with what happened than your comment
Ruffian's death signaled the eventual end of horse racing. Her wounds reflected many issues: training horses far too young, greed, man's pagentry of horses, "glamour," male vs. female.... Ruffian's death was not in vain. Though advances have been made medically as long as there is money, ego, and greed animals of all kinds will be used, used, used and then disgarded.
Susan Nunes most race horses do due to thin legs plus pushing and pressure on those front legs more then likely to snap I worked at race track in Edmonton the horse are a year old carrying a human and racing at two. Not entirely. She was genetically predisposed to brittle bones from both her parents. Many tragic circumstances went into Ruffian being put down. But don’t put the blame solely on the owner. Yes they played a part but they are not solely responsible for Ruffian’s death
Think about it, you are running a two-three yr old horse bones are not fully grown or strong yet and you are making them run so fast 1200 pounds it self plus the jockey that that me 170pounds at least. A lot of young TBs break down and it’s super sad and I don’t support racing, I use to be a stable had at one in Edmonton.
Ruffian has since been moved from Belmont Park and is now buried at Claiborne Farm where she was born. She was no doubt one of the greatest.
