Yes. We look at the faster moving planet. If, for example, Mars is in Leo, and Uranus is in Taurus, then Mars would be making an opening square. If Mars is in Aquarius, and Uranus in Taurus, Mars would be making a closing square.
Thanks! So with Uranus in the last degrees of sagittarius and mars in the early degrees of aries it is an opening square hence has cancerian qualities :) nice! never thought about it that way. I was born in '88 so I also have my saturn at the exact same spot as uranus....great mix! :D

Obviously the strength of that depends on other factors in the chart, etc. And yes, we don't often think about it because we're not thinking about how the aspect angles are derived; i.e., from the zodiacal wheel itself.
I have it Retro Mars in Leo square Retro Uranus in Scorpio (also Venus in Taurus is opposite Uranus forms a T square). What I've noticed what u said cannot control my anger it's explosive and unpredictable. Also sometimes I shock people with my believes and some might think I lack morals. How this aspect would play out in synastry with someone who has Uranus(Libra) opposite Mars (Aries) will it feel like home or disaster?
