Just got back from a holiday in tokyo and ee really liked the excelsior coffee shops, we went to one in shibuya and one at skytree and both had the bird sounds and relaxing music, love this chain! From the UK x
Got hungry watching you eat that pasta from Pronto! Will be adding that to my list ❤ Also I was getting the jitters watching you drink so many coffee in a day 😂
Great review, but big city Japan has such an abundance of specialty and mom&pop cafes that I never considered going to a chain. OTOH, for the first few days of every trip I’m obsessed with konbini sandwiches. 😅
Excelsior is also great for getting Cremia soft serve for dessert. Not every location has the machine, but it's really tasty. It's made with Hokkaido cream and the cone is like a milano cookie
My fave actually wasn't in here! It's Hoshino Coffee 💕 Had their fluffy pancakes and iced black coffee for breakfast a whole week while I was there haha
Excelsior was the first coffee shop I went to in Japan. I'm now obsessed with Japan's coffee culture. It all started with a mille crepe and a black coffee.
Visiting Japan is full of surprises, and one of them is realizing just how much Japanese people love coffee!😳 As Sarah mentioned, there are tons of major nationwide coffee chains, as well as stylish, cutting-edge cafes run by independent owners and classic coffee shops that have been around since the 1960s. On top of that, you’ll find regional chain cafes that are only in certain areas, each with its own unique vibe, making them worth checking out. Personally, I’m a huge fan of those retro cafes with a nostalgic 60s-70s atmosphere.😁☕ Oh, and apparently, more and more tourists are coming to Japan specifically to explore its coffee culture these days.
Definitely Pronto and Sarutahiko, the pasta looked interesting and I liked the whole vibe from these two places. Im glad you survived the coffee journey!! Loved the video!!
During our first visit we were stunned by the amount of times we went into trying new coffee places that majority of them gave us instant headaches when they had smoking within and like you said, the 'areas' dedicated for smoking doesn't stop the smoke from entering the rest of the cafe. We ended up staying away from any place that allowed smoking.
When I was studying in Tokyo, I always went to Tully’s to study so they’re still the chain I would seek out now! I haven’t been to any in this video actually haha but maybe I’ll try next time
Yay, a review of the bigger coffee chains!! I've been looking forward to this one. You really hit the pavement after your poll on what to vlog about. I was surprised how fast you turned this one around. I haven't heard of a few of these shops, so I'll have to seek them out if I get a chance. There were a few others I'd heard of but not been to, much like Sarah. That Saint Marc croissant is great! I thought I remembered Doutor also having a nice chocolate croissant, but I might be mistaken. I'm looking forward to the next review! I know there's Hoshino and Komeda. And I don't know if there's Nishimura in the Tokyo area, but I like going there in Kobe. Can't wait to see what other chains you introduce us to.
I specifically sought out that Nishimura on Kitanozaka in Kobe with my wife last summer after you reviewed it. Lovely atmosphere, and the coffee jelly was really nice 🤌
I love coffee so I try to visit a few every time I’m out there. However, St. Marc takes the cake for me. I absolutely love their chococro. I also recently went to Tully’s out there for the first time and really enjoyed their Matcha Latte. I really like that these larger cafes are so accommodating of people wanting to work or study there. There’s been a recent trend of big chains downsizing their locations here in the Southwestern US to eliminate indoor seating altogether in favor of simply picking up your drink. I have YET to try Pronto, though. I saw them everywhere yet never stopped in. The cafe / bar concept is so neat! Also, that Sarutahiko location is awesome, especially since you get to watch the train go by! Love your videos as always!
Hoshino Coffee at Shibuya Scramble is a great spot. You published a video on it a couple of weeks before my first trip to Japan, so I was able to replicate that experience myself. Any other similar "scenic" spots for these chains that you recommend?
My first visit to Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto) was a couple of weeks ago and I could have done with this video then ☺ I struggled to find a decent early morning cafe that coincided with my VERY early morning visits to the popular tourist spots. Even harder to find one that did flat whites. Shout out to Vermillion cafe near Fushimi Inari Shrine that opened at 8.30am AND made an excellent flat white! So good!
"I've officially entered my black coffee phase..." Be careful Seeransan... you're on a slippery slope that can only lead to one place: Smoking cigarettes whilst listening to The Cure & contemplating the meaninglessness of life.
Thanks for your reviews on coffee shops, we will be travelling to JApan in May from Aussie and love coffee so will be good to have these names on my list for coffee while in Tokyo.
Hi, another nice video! I have tried some of these coffee shops. My favorites are dotour, exelcior, If you have time please try becks coffee, I have tried their matcha. Its the best matcha latte that Ive tried. ❤ from manila, philippines
@@seerasan just came back from Japan in October. Visited a few cafes in both Tokyo and Kyoto that were featured in your other videos. Totally enjoyed the coffee culture in Japan. Keep up your good work. Your Australian accent is very enjoyable as well. I lived in Hobart, Tasmania for 5 years.
Great video! For the best coffee and toast combo I had in Tokyo, I would highly recommend Vault Coffee in Akihabara - the cinnamon toast is next level! 🤤
Komeda is on my Must List for breakfast, but Hoshino is my favorite chain. But will definitely try the ones in this vid that I haven't been to yet. Thx for the recommendations!
Dean and Deluca is the best coffee even though it's American. this is from an expat from AUS who is picky about coffee and they also have skim milk which is impossible to find otherwise. The food is awesome too, deli style food for breakfast, lunch etc.
My goodness, after all this coffee, how did you not unlock hyper speed mode? One more and I think you'd be able to walk from Wakkanai to Kagoshima in under an hour
Great video! There were a number of places I surprisingly never ran into but will definitely look up if I ever get a chance to go back to Japan Also appreciate showing off the coffee jelly, maybe I just didn't go to the right shops but I feel like I've only come across 2 places serving this, jotting and making a big note for Cafe Veloce (can't get this in the US unfortunately :( )
wait u were around in Shinjuku? I work around in Shinjuku LOL I HIGHLY SUGGEST UESHIMA COFFEE no complaints... it kind sits like a king if you can find one...highly suggest ppl traveling to Tokyo to at least visit there once
The Japanese coffee culture started and became popular in the 1960s, where everybody spent time in cafes called Kissaten, where the staff made coffee after the orders with a kind of coffee beans they could choose. This coffee culture was well ahead of Seattle.
Oh my gosh you’re right!!! Since I didn’t enjoy black coffee before, I was never interested in trying Coffee Mameya…but now the opportunities are endless 😍 *adding it to my bucket list!
Being able to smoke while drinking my coffee outside, was one of the reasons I loved living in Japan a decade ago, after a decade of oppression in europe and the former commonwealth.
I’m not a coffee person but I’ll get a matcha drink when meeting folks either at Doutor, Tullys or Starbucks. Since you’re doing themes, how about places that have fluffy pancakes or omurice.
For those look for good (aka specialty) coffee, Sarutahiko is probably the only one reviewed worth trying at. In terms of "chains" (or spots with multiple locations, there are a couple of others in Tokyo that are worth visiting for people that actually like decent coffee: Streamer Coffee - started as an espresso shop in Shibuya, now a bunch all over the place, Ogawa Coffee (only a few places in Tokyo, worth it), or if we're moving up, Glitch Coffee or Koffee Mameya (does 2 count as a chain)? There are also some international chains that are good. I'd recommend Fuglen or any Starbucks *Reserve* but especially the Roastery (book in advance, it's always full). Tokyo is a fantastic coffee town and if you are serious about coffee and search for "tokyo specialty coffee" (or "tokyo kissaten" if you're about Showa vibes) you'll see lots of options - many of the best places are a single person micro-roasting their own beans/running a small shop - you won't see these on many coffee lists online.
Where to have coffee first/favorite? The first place I see! =-) Since you like trains, heres an idea for a future video; good places to sit and watch trains.
Doutor was the first Japanese coffee chain I visited on my first trip to Japan in 2007. Was really surprised that they allowed smoking in the cafe at the time and no smoking room either.
@seerasan thanks for the Info, some i saw had Tea and other options but i didn't realise all of them had other type of Drinks. Some of these places make it definetly on my list of places to visit if i ever make it to Japan.
How have you never had a chococro?! I still remember my first 18 years ago. It was raining, we ran into this warm dry cafe which smelled so chocolatey…it was magical!
I personally think Starbucks is overrated. My go-to Japanese coffee shop is Kurashiki Coffee ☕️ because they have Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 coffee which makes me feel at home.
Aaah Saint Marc was the first coffee shop I went to when I moved to Japan... But it didn't have touch screens it that particular store. I really enjoyed the savoury filled croissants, like sandwiches. The machine coffee is ok for me as I usually just have it black anyway 😂 I think the whole indoor smoking in coffee shops is something that is maintained due to the outdoor smoking ban. Maybe a lot of places allow smoking inside because they rely on smokers coming in for a place to smoke, and then buying drinks to bolster sales. I'm originally from the UK where it was the other way around, smoking inside was banned and smoking on the streets is still (for the time being) allowed. I think the indoor smoking ban approach is better for non-smokers, and so it kind of confuses me why Japan went the other way. Before coming here I had no idea that Japan was so in to coffee, I assumed it was all just tea and matcha! 😂 I'm surprised you didn't feature Komeda Coffee in this video! I know you enjoy their breakfast menu.... I always order too much when I go to Komeda 🫤 "I love trains"..... Yeah... Moving to Japan made me a train lover too!
Sometimes I feel like coffee is bigger than tea & matcha in some ways! At least cafe wise, they're more popular than sit down tea shops! The chain expert back at it with more chain vids, I've found the restaurant vids helpful especially, cheers
"Komeda coffee" is my favorite. Their foods are so good.
I really like Komeda Coffee too 🥰☕
Morning set!
Komeda is not so popular for foreigners yet but slowly becoming popular

COFFEE!! ☕ I LOVE COFFEE!! Another great vlog from you as always!! Look forward to seeing your next vlog!!!!❤
I love it when you do cafe chains!
Love this video, would love to see more Kissaten or even Matcha or general tea place videos. Thank you for the hard work and caffeine overdose 😉
Thank you for making this video. Your cafe videos are some of my favorite to watch.

Watching from Costa Rica, very curious about specialty coffee scene in Japan ❤

How good is the decaf coffee in Japan? I absolutely love the taste of black coffee but my heart can't handle caffeine very well.
The places that do decaf coffee make it pretty well!
