Saint Lukes is a very expensive hospital. There are a lot of good hospitals in Manila and Cebu that are at par with hospitals in the US or Europe. Most of our specialists here are trained abroad. Some people in the US come here for treatment specially in the field of dentistry because of the high cost medical procedure abd the waiting time takes months

As a foreigner living here in manila for 15 years, ive had both of my kids born here, and several times hospitlized, i have family doctors (wifes side) working in st lukes and makati med, plus ive been been to both as a patient or family as a patient plus ive also been to more mid tier hospitals, LONG STORY SHORT - do NOT ever go to these high tier hospitals, they are complete ripoffs and will try to over exagerate EVERYTHING, i 100% can NOT stand the high end hospitals like st lukes and makati med, they are VERY VERY greedy hospitals, i had the exact same issues at both hospitals, recently my son was at makati med just for dizzyness, they tried to get him in ICU, ICU???? not just ICU but whole family would be required to take covid tests (at a very high price) and be charged for isolation rooms on top of ICU room. Its disgusting to think the doctors and nurses there are willing to bankrupt a family just so they can get those $$$... i kept saying to the doctor ''but that doesnt make sense'' referring to just common sense reactions to what ever they just said, something just felt off.
Ive never had this problem in mid tier hospitals, the care is authentic, if you dont need a surgeon they dont send you a surgeon. They give the required care and dont milk you like youre an idiot with unlimited funds. Long story short guys, dont go to st lukes or makati med.

They look at you as a BANK THAT CAN PROVIDE CASH TO THEIR NEED BUT NOT CARING for that PARTICULAR person taken in. They look also on your appearance and if they knew you live Overseas they WILL ripped you off . Both of these Private Hospitals ( ST LUKES IN BGC AND MAKATI MED ) they will charged you for even the smallest items like gloves , other items they had used to do physical test when it should already be included in the Charges of Consultations . 22:50 that’s the reason George and Lucy decided to deliver Koda in the UK because they wanted full presence of George during all stages of labor in the birthing process. They don’t have any of their family members in the Phil. too so the UK was their choice so they can share their joy with both of their families with them. Last, in the UK it’s free so why will they spend so much in the Phil. if they can have a good quality and free service in the UK.

Thank you for sharing your experience and the actual cost.
I gave birth at Providence Hospital in QC back in 2019. We stayed there for only 2 days.
We paid nearly 200k, too. Philhealth was already deducted from these fees.
70k was the fee for delivery and for pedia (catching) and all other newborn tests/vaccines.
120k is the "Professional Fee" my OB charged me. She said that also includes the PF for the anesthesiologist and the surgery assistant (I had a C-section).
It is still a positive experience as they allowed my husband to be with me while being operated on.. they even offered for my husband to cut the cord, but he was so scared and didn't wanna do it. It was actually the one who took the video and photos. They forwarded it to me when I was in the recovery room.

I'm a Filipina, and I had my first baby in the Philippines. It only cost me P27,000 at a private hospital. For my second baby, I had it in the UK.
    1. St. Luke's is one of the pricier private hospitals in the Philippines, so be ready for higher costs compared to other hospitals.
    2. It's pretty normal in the Philippines, especially in private hospitals, for husbands not to be allowed in the delivery room. Only the patient can go in, unless you’ve specifically talked to your OBGYN about your wishes. Just because you’re paying for their services doesn’t mean you can ignore the hospital rules.
    3. The way the UK and PH handle patients is really different. I was surprised I could even be with my husband during delivery when I had mine!
Honestly, I think what you're feeling might be a bit of paranoia about everything going on these days, even questioning medication from professionals. That's totally okay, though. If you're thinking about giving birth in a country you're not familiar with, just do a bit of research first. Remember, you're not just paying the bills; you're also relying on the staff.

Prices in the hospitals here in the Philipines are pricey specially if you will go to the top tier hospitals. Which is why Filipinos are very dependent in HMO health insurance and Philhealth because they helped lowring down medical bills.

Philippine Healthcare system is still not a well defined delivery system. We don’t have a socialized medicine and it’s purely fee for service model. I used to work in healthcare administration in U. S. And now retiring hopefully to go back to Ph apparently Healthcare will be a problem and am fully aware of that. My thought is to buy a healthcare insurance plan to cover me there because CASH will not be available all the time. My recommendation for kito family if by any means you can purchase a health plan coverage since you’re living there now that should help si you don’t get surprises at the end . Pacific Cross is one I’m looking at since it’s administrated by Australian based and can have reasonable premiums to cover major medical services . You can ask for a quote to cover family health plan. It is really wise to obtain a family insurance especially you may not know what other unexpected scenarios can happen in the future

I’m sure there are package deals every hospital have for delivery. Maybe Kim didn’t know that or was not informed. Usually, when the expectant parents decide which hospital they choose, different packages are explained to them so they can choose which one suit their preference. Paying private or with insurance …..That includes the type of room, private or not, with aircon, just fan or nothing at all, luxury service or standard. All these things are shown to expectant parents. I’m surprised they were not informed of these package deals. Preparing for delivery take months esp. finances and what hospital to go. They could have that planned out and choose which package even a month before the expected date of delivery. So when the time comes even if a day early, admitting in the hospital is smooth and expenses are sort of expected already

Hospitals specially for OBs they should understand that the one who is giving birth would feel more at ease and has more strength if they could see their partner by their side.Though I gave birth on a public maternity hospital which by the way is much cheaper although just be prepared on how the staff will treat you. 😂 I did not experience any epidural so I really need to bear the pain from start to finish but with just one push poor baby is out. Healthcare is really expensive when you don't get it for 'free' like in the UK. And definitely not great when they are not upfront about how much it would cost. The difference that I can say though when you are pregnant is that in the UK where it's free, you don't get to see the same OB-GYN throughout your pregnancy until delivery. Every hospital visit may be with a different healthcare professional. Usually, you get a midwife to deliver the baby with the doctor just monitoring as well. If the birth is getting complicated and you need to be taken to the theatre, that's when the doctor takes over. If you get taken to the theatre, your husband is also only allowed to be there at a certain time, not the whole time. I think when a patient is in the theatre or surgery room, it's usually a protocol to only have healthcare professionals in there that way there are no distractions in what they need to do inside the surgery room. The conversion from php to gbp may only be £3k but in reality if you go to a private healthcare in the UK, it would be more expensive than that.

When I gave birth to my second the OB monitored it herself and she even told me it is possible to alleviate me from the pain and stress. She just watched the machine as I contract , she coached me to push. I told myself , what ???? My first OB made me suffer by removing the epidural when I began to push. My first child birth was not so pleasant . I wish I have known my second OB . The first OB was old school , ugh! This was from the same upscale hospital in the US. The second OB even transferred and upgraded me to a birthing room without added charge since it was empty at that time. That can never happen in the PI, I will be charged lots of money! And husband is always allowed in the room during child birth. 3k is reasonable . It was 6k 3 decades ago in the US. But we of course in the UK it’s socialized medicine , no or minimal out of pocket from the patient .

My daughter was hospitalized in Makati Med 7 years ago. Paid around 61k pesos. Our insurance in US reimbursed us $500. My husband and I stayed in the hospital for 6 days (Slept in hospital bed with her and my husband in the chair). Which you can’t do in the US. The only downside about being hospitalized in Philippines is paying out of pocket.

In NY, In Pediatrics, parents can stay with the sick child in the hospital. They allowed at least 1 parent and if it’s a private room, both can stay ‘till the child is discharge. It’s a different policy for critical care areas but in standard units, yes they can esp. pediatrics

I am a HCP working in the healthcare sector in the UK. Sorry, insisting to have your husband in the room is an entitled behaviour. Protocol in PH is different from the UK. you can’t insist on the UK way, and have your husband in the room just because it was what you envisioned. It was partly the hospital’s fault for not explaining their protocol to you, a foreigner, but you should have also asked knowing you are not familiar with PH healthcare. Different healthcare systems different protocols. NHS patients can complain but services, hospitals rarely change their protocol and bend the rules just because somebody isn’t happy. Why expect a hospital in PH to change their protocol for you? It is also not fair to other Filipino fathers who would like to witness the same moments your husband did but because they aren’t white foreigners with British accent, they didn’t get the same leeway as you did.

These hospitals (St. Luke’s and Makati Med) are disgustingly expensive and have the reputation of ripping people off. And the doctors who work there have the same mentality, they take advantage of the people/patients. So sad how greedy these people are 😢

4,000 dollars I think is so reasonable for giving birth in a prestigious hospital in the Philippines. In the States, you pay a co-payment of 3,000 dollars from your pocket + you pay 1000 dollars per month for insurance for a family. Not only that your OB GYNE doctor was always checking on you in the Philippines. In the States, there will be 2 to 3 pregnant women that the OB-GYNE is probably going to deliver so they show up only when the baby is crowning and so most of the time it is only one nurse who is there at your bedside checking on you every 15 minutes. In the States machines are connected to all over your body that you feel you are tied to a bed while in the Philippines it is the human eye that monitors you instead of machines the nurse monitors from the nurses's station while you suffer being tied to a bed. Anyways it just surprised me that there are so many nurses flocking around , usually in the west 2 nurses, the doctor and the anesthesiologist are the only ones in the surgical area or birthing area. Shows nurses are not paid well in the Philippines. The only thing I did not understand too was not letting your husband witness the birth of your child because you need a family support at your bedside when you are in so much pain, except extra family members who can cause interruptions on the birthing process.

There must someplace where hospitals and or doctors can be reported for over charging customers. I went to see a skin doctor and was charge an insane amount of money, and the doctor added another treatment without asking me. This should be illegal. Anybody know where I can report doctors who takes advantage of customers just because they are from a different country.

I hate to think and say, as I am also a filipino citizen, that the medical service in the Philippines is a complete rip off especially on high end hospitals. Thank you for voicing out and share your "bad" experience. This should be dealt with with professionalism.

3,000£ pound? That’s a bargain! You know how much you have to pay in Western world if you don’t have insurance specially here in the US? It’s between 100-250,000 dollars! and that’s not even a good hospital!
