Silo is the new Apple TV+ sci-fi series based on the Silo book series by Hugh Howey. Season one is based on the first novel Wool and episodes 1 and 2 introduce us to life inside the Silo. We meet Sheriff Holston Becker (David Oyelowo) and his wife Allison (Rashida Jones). We also meet Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) who believes her lover George has been murdered.
The Silo is an underground world where the last 10,000 people on Earth live to stay safe from the toxic environment on the surface. The inhabitants aren’t aware of how it got there or why things are the way they are because a rebellion 140 destroyed their histories. Things take a turn when Allison starts asking questions and eventually asks to go outside. This is the cardinal rule of the Silo. Any spoken request to leave the Silo is granted, but it’s irrevocable, once uttered it’s determinative, in other words, it’s a death sentence.

Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and any who try to find out face fatal consequences. Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer, who seeks answers about a loved one's murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don't kill you, the truth will.

This is a pretty great start and there are a lot of cool details that jump right out for book readers. Interested to see if it will pick up a following. If you're into sci-fi or near future dystopian stuff you should check it out. Let me know what you think.
happy to be here. Missed your coverage since severance!
You should do a video totally spoiling what happens in the 1st book. That would be super interesting. Like what are the major changes or character mashups and........wait a minute I'm supposed to be working and this distracted me dangit.
I would love for you to cover From. It's super interesting.
Really glad you're covering this series it's shaping up quite nicely so far💚🇬🇧🌱
It’s been so many years since I read these books I honestly can’t remember a ton. I’m glad it was made clear those screens are lying because that’s the only detail I could remember.
I don’t think the air is toxic, I think the suit is being pumped full of toxic air and killing off the people.
That’s what I think
Do you want spoilers?
That’s what I think
@@legofanofnz2466 nah I know what happened
@@legofanofnz2466 yes pls
Just found this show, and I'm impressed so far. Silo, Severance, Foundation - AppleTV is firing on all cylinders.
Glad that the author was involved in the writing of the show. This should make for a much more satisfying experience for readers of the books than Foundation.
It’s hilarious when someone says “I wana go out.” It’s like oh no, now you done it😂
I am totally hooked by the first 2 eps!!! cant wait to see how this unravels
glad you are covering this
I have a feeling a lot of people are going to end up getting spoiled about what's going on since all the information is out there. Probably a good idea to read the books if people want to find out for themselves rather than accidentally seeing something online.
What is this show watchable on?
@@drazzytime9353 Apple TV
It’s interesting that once he takes his helmet off, we no longer see his pov. I wonder what things really look like. When we saw his pov with the helmet on, everything did look green, but it also looked sorta artificial
Another thing about the helmet and suit I thought about was that when we saw his face after he took his helmet off he was breathing heavily. But if the world outside is really so toxic that you have only 3 minutes in a protective suit wouldn't he just keel over immediately? Even then how is it always pretty much 3 minutes? Air quality and toxicity changes based on the weather. All that being said I think that maybe it's the suit that poisons them rather than the air. They're shown a false world so they will clean and with their task accomplished they are disposed of.
@@mason8920 that’s a pretty interesting point. I wonder what it is then. Im anxious for the next episode lol
@@mason8920 that’s what I think too the suit is killing them
What he saw with his helmet on is exactly what she saw in the video on the computer (look at the reflection on her glasses)
This is a pretty big departure from the book. In that, it's clear how he puts things together as he's dying.
Silo is one of my new favorite shows of the year along with the 2nd season of FROM. Thanks for the content man im taking all i can get with this show!
I really enjoyed the first two episodes and I’m looking forward to see where this goes. I haven’t read the books so I appreciate your spoiler free take on this!
OH CRAP!! I didn't realize they actually now made a TV series for this! I'm a huge fan! I got the comic, all the ebooks, and audio books for this!! OMFG!! I'm So stoked!!!
So glad you're covering Silo! Please keep this going next week
Best science fiction show since Raised by Wolves got cancelled and it has vibes from Lost, too. Loving it so far!
Unlike Lost it has a actual planned and focused story.
@@grey7513 yes, Lost lost its way 😁
This show is incredible.
The Silo looks great and Rebecca Fergusson seems up to the task of bringing Juliette to life. They've got a good story to work so all signs are pointing in the right direction.
Calm down only 2 episodes out and the first one dragged a bit
@@stedyedy23bet you feel stupid now😂 they are GUNNING for the season 2
This breakdown of Silo is just as good as the first two episodes!!!😃😃😃
thanks
I'm hooked! I wanna know! Thanks for taking us on the journey with you Pete! So many of our favorites have gone before we got answers (RIP RBW) ...I'm THRILLED you're also covering 'FROM' because that show has given us fresh 'food for thought' ... Thanks Pete! You're our 'go to' on recaps! ☺️
Was looking for somebody who reviewed Silo and was so happy to find you Mr Peppers. Keep up the good job and take my likes.
I love this book series and was excited to see it as a TV series instead of a movie. I think the changes work well for the screen too. Casting is absolutely perfect.
So far so good.
I'm beyond hooked and completely invested in this show .
Oh, man. These books are unbelievable… stoked they made a show
Awesome aren't they! I haven't read them for about 6+ years now, I'd be interested to see what else Hugh has done in the meantime.
One thing that saddened my heart was hearing the Sheriff say he goes to work early and leaves late so he won't see his wife's body in the cafeteria screen when he goes past there.
no doubt
Great start to the show. Excited to see you covering this.
I like when the writer is involved in the visual adaptation
Silo is looking to be an amazing show. So far I definitely think the suits have some type of toxins killing anyone inside. Also is Juliette the new main character?
Enjoy the twists
I was thinking this.
I also separately thought that the screen was showing them die even if they didnt.
However from this recap it seems that the screen is actually showing them reality, and the suit is showing them a fake world.
Though in episode 3, why would the screen bug out and show the 'fake world'.
It’s so bad
Where can I watch this ?

So happy you are covering another show I’m watching!
Thanks Pete, great to see you are covering this series. A good start, I think.
I searched yesterday hoping that you'd cover this. My prayers have been answered! Thanks Pete.
No problem. Should be a fun one to cover.
Yesssss, Pete! I’m waiting to binge this but glad you have started your weekly reviews! 🎉🎉🎥
I had not known about these books and only decided to watch since I noticed that you dropped a video about Silo. So thank you for that, your review and clearing up some things I didn't quite understand. I enjoyed these 2 episodes.
Read the books: spoiler ahead for the ending and whats outside.
Okay: so a group gets out at the end of silo to realize that, only the close proximity is poisoned, which was made that way from the creators of silo to keep people inside, when the group left and walked a decent amount, they saw the real earth where it’s actually not poisoned and they see a tower, they think that this tower is the new beginning for them! Also the group is led by the main character Juliette, haven’t seen the show, but hopefully thats the ending they’re going for, we already saw in many shows that they sometimes change the ending from the books in the show :(
If you were wondering why they died immediately after they left the silo, the people who made the suit’s sabotaged the tape the use on it, which melted immediately when using it, that made the poison get into the suit so they couldn’t go past the poisoned area, which is why we don’t get the see the beautiful world outside until the group made their own suits and got out
Been a long time since i read the books, but hopefully I remembered correctly, which Im pretty sure i did :)
Im so glad that you are also watching this show. Looking forward to your weekly reviews!
It is nice to see a series that has brought me back to your channel but I still can't wait for the next season of For All Mankind.
Love Rebecca Ferguson! She got me to see this, and then noticed the cast: great actors. The story is good & hooked me in. Of course, the writing, acting, production etc. -
all is top notch!
Great to hear your voice & review, Pete. 🤗
This just jumped to the top of my Apple show list. I loved the books and so far this is looking ❤️
I've noted that these 2 episodes hooked up a lot of people with the idea that the fake footage is actually the one that people inside the Silo see on the screens, so they think that actually the Sheriff and his wife are out there happily living their lives, and so that the air is no toxic and all these people are kept inside the Silo through deceit and lies. This looks like a very good premise to start watching a show, but I wonder how will they take it when they realize that the show is actually going in totally different direction.
Excellent review for a potentially excellent series. Thanks!
Great summary/commentary as always, Mister Peppers. Thanks muchly, looking forward to future episodes' coverage : )
thanks, just uploaded the video for episode 3
Best Apple TV series since Severance!!!
Great to see you covering this show! I think the air inside their suits is what kills them when they go outside.
Yes, so glad you’re covering this!
Awesome recap! Thanks so much!
Thank you for the stories.
The first two episodes are gripping. I'm in.
Frustrated that we have to wait for weekly episodes to drop, but very much enjoyed the start.
I read Wool and Shift a couple years ago and loved them, but haven’t gotten around to Dust yet. The changes from the books feel natural, so that’s good.
So far this show is intriguing but Pete I really wish you would cover "From" the tv series. Imo fans of your channel would really enjoy your breakdowns and the 2nd season is currently airing weekly.
I never watched the first season so I would have a lot to catch up on
Nice recap. I loved the first two episodes. The books were my favorite series, and I have very high hopes for the show. So far they're knocking it out if the park. A lot rides on how they end this season. It needs to come in for a good landing, like the first book did.
As I was watching episode one I was thinking about the book Anthem and the "forbidden word" which if spoken has severe and irrevocable consequences to those who speak it.
Yes!!! I was waiting for your breakdown ❤🎉😊
I've read the first book and am about halfway through the second. I loved the first book and it's really intriguing, and I honestly loved the addition to Jules & Holston's story as it really adds a layer that I felt was missing from their story. It's alluded to in the book that they investigated something but this really fleshes out their connection at a much better pace. Given the season is 10 episodes, my guess is that the season will cover the entirety of the first book as honestly this season would feel completely empty if it only explored half of the book, I mean it's not a super long book lol, 14-15 hours on Audible at a moderate reading pace, and 530 pages, so that's a fairly long stretch to try and turn that into 20 episodes of TV.
After the end of the first book I really wanted to know how the story turns out.
But instead the second book is a prequel. Good story, but I really wanted to know how the main story unfolded😂
Not a book reader, I was not going to finish Episode 1 ... but now that you tell me Rebecca Ferguson is in the show, will definitely watch more onwards... thanks
Love me some Pete Peppers movie and series analysis!!
That's pretty clever... at first it looks like a hamfisted Plato's Cave analogy, but the twist overturns that
Another so far well done sci fi ,that I hope will have a following like The Expanse just bigger I’m hoping for 3-4 seasons
Such shows just need 2 or 3 seasons whe they get too long its becomes boring
Seasons 1 and 2 would be the first book. I'm not sure how they'll handle the second one because there is a lot of prequel involved before they get back to the present where book 1 ends. The third book could likely be covered in one season to wrap things up. It's an absolutely complete story in relation to the mysteries it presents. Hopefully they'll be able to get through the whole story and use the TV format to get viewers invested in all the characters along the way.
I read the Wool series when it came out years ago and kinda forgot how great it was. I think it's unfair to the author to imply that the TV adaptation is better than the book. The author created the vision and needs to be respected for his creativity and writing skill. Don't get me wrong, I am loving the TV adaptation and respect the amount of work that went into creating an excellent adaptation of a very complicated book.
The author is a co-writer for this show. 😅
Awesome. Just scoped the first 2 episodes lastnight. Suggested it to a few buddies.
There's so much detail in the writing already, clearing any chance for plotholes so far. I love it
But wait... i gotta rewatch.. the greenery is only an illusion through the helmets view?? And its actually a desolate wasteland in real view?
@@aparksmusic well I have two theories. First is what you're saying confirmed by him not seeing his dead wife with helmet on. Hence he takes it off. Then he goes to crawl towards her. Implying he can see her.
Second theory is suit is intentionally made to fail by people from the inside.
Wow I had no idea this season was only half of the first book. Kind of a bummer, as I thought they were doing a season per book, but hopefully this is HH’s vision and will pay off. Considering how vastly different book 2 (Shift) is, they may be shuffling things around a bit.
almost reminds me of the show "The 100" the dystpian world, destoryed earth, sending people outside an airlock for crimes, resctricted child bearing etc.
How do you know the air in the suit isn't poisoned a few minute after exiting the silo?
The show doesn't rule that out.
I love it!
I really can't wait for the next episode.
When I saw that the story is based on a book I wondered if I should read the book, But I now think, as with The Expanse, the changes only improved the story and I'll leave enough alone.
I really enjoy the Harry Potter movies much more than I do the books. The movies are just so much better at telling the stories more coherently without a lot of extraneous information.
I was a bit skeptical about this show when I first saw the previews, but I was pretty solidly hooked about halfway through the first episode and it hit me so hard that I waited a couple of days before watching the second episode. Now I really can't wait for the next episode!
I am not a science nerd but for a community living underground they have a lot of equipment requiring natural ressources from the surface or heavy chimical processing....
I think the poison comes from the suit! They release it right after they clean the window/camera or if they get too far... It is the perfect way to give hope then fear to the people watching!
Nope but what they do does have a similar effect
My man, let's freaking go!
Let's hope some people watch it.
Great start.. apple has done it again
AppleTV got some fire shows. Severance, Servant and now Silo.
Why do they all start with S?
I have a feeling the suits they where when they are released don’t have a window but rather a screen and the feed is manipulated
I was so happy that you’re doing a review. The first 2 episodes were intriguing enough that it made me want more. I agree the real story is the Silo and why it was built. I was distracted by what seemed like different accents. Every time I think I have it figured out, I’m proven wrong. I’m bead thinking both the camera view from the silo and the helmet were video images, but clearly I’m wrong. But centuries with the same camera? That’s still working?
This Silo tv-serie reminds me of Planet IX in Dune.
I loved the book and now love the series. Great adaptation. I noticed the same differences you pointed out, but for a story told visually, they only enhance the experience. The claustrophobic feeling is conveyed in a different way.
That class structure is really interesting, certain people feel important for certain reasons but there's no treating people like shit, "just because"
There is a little bit of that
Loving the Show.
Loved the books, looking forward to this series.
Glad you are covering this show and I look forward to your ongoing analysis. [Never got past episode #1 of YellowJackets] The first two Silo episodes were a bit slow, but that is understandable as they are doing the initial world building.
Ive watched the first 2 episodes and i cant get it out of my head is that its like a prequel to the matrix and seeing an early Zion .
This was definitely inspired by platos cave!
Absolutely.
Can anyone suggest which software is used to cut all these clips from the series
My new favorite Apple TV series! ❤️
“Silo” as a TV show reminds me of a better executed “Ascension.”
Great recap!
thanks Pete please keep with this series, while it may end up being on of those series that has more questions than answers it still seems like an interesting idea for a story, and on a side note i do not think the outside is a waste i think the sits they wear outside kill them so they can never tell anyone the real truth. great video
If they adapt all 3 books then they will pretty much answer every question related to the Silo. The series does a thorough job.
It feels so good to see it finally getting an adaption. I remember some things from the books. And i can say i am genuinely surprised by the quality of it.
Just started bingeing on this now and it reminds me a lot of the video game Stray. Like that game could potentially tell what could happen in the Silo in the future.
Was the part about Allison finding out that her implant wasn't removed added for the show? I've read Wool and never saw that.
Her motivation was a little different in the book. Meeting George and seeing the hard drive was still a big part of what set her off though.
My first thought, the first time they suited someone up to go outside, is that the oxygen in her suit is actually poisoned.
Pete posts, I click.
“What the screen shows is real?” I’m questioning that! Did u see how the screen went from showing a barren land, to showing a green landscape for a split second then back again!
When did that happen
@@EvansSimakoswhen they cut the power down to Fix the generator….. or when it came back…. Pretty sure it was the former
@@NA-sj9jy right.. It happened in the 2nd
Much better adaptation than Foundation though that’s good this on another level great.
I didn't realize the helmet is fake, that killed me. I thought some how it was perfect outside. that's awful.
One thing i don't get is how they die after cleaning where do they find the time to clean instead of just running for safety.
I feel like they see the beautiful landscape and that is how things actually real . I think they die from the air they breath in the suit. What if living out there meant a new colony. What if outside looks gorgeous and in the passed has caused many to leave . Not enough suits and not enough people to run a world . The screem gives them false hope and leverage to the rulers. .
Great point I was thinking something similar
Don’t forget we are in the greatest dystopia.
uppers is UN middle is MARS and lower is Belters!
nah i still think the outside is safe. i think its the air they breath from their o2 tank is the one poisoned.
This asks an age old question, discover truth or maintain order?
No, after he takes off his helmet, we are switched to the fake view on the screen inside.
Not read the book but there still underground even when the go out side
As soon as she went outside, I was like it's not the air outside. It's what's in the suit that's why the people die.
What if what they think they are seeing once outside is already programmed in their helmets??? I mean what else cud it be???
loved the first 2 eps
I think the air could be breathable. The air in their suits is toxic and initiated when they get outside. That's why Holsten takes the helmet off. But it's too late. His system is filled with poison. So it looks like he's still choking on air after the helmet is off signaling to the people the air isn't breathable. A cruel trick by Judicial.
Im guessing its something in the suit is what knocks the people out. Not the outside
Goof job buddy. I liked the books too, the author seems like a very down to earth chap.
I never read the book and don't intent.. so i might be wrong but i feel something is wrong with the suits.
And that's why he took off his helmet. He was suffocating it seem.
And thats all i got😅
