    Honestly i think this is a pretty good set. Everything from the built in light to the resealable food pouch to the tank's circular design is really nice. Its unfortunate that the first attempt was a bust. I'd love to pick up a hydropets tank of my own.

  • @hattie302
    @hattie302 Год назад +41

    It's a shame the packet contents didn't work out, but I really do like the increased volume and built in light for this tank! I also find the smooth color changes for the light to be much preferable to the one in the ocean adventure tank; it seems a bit annoying to have a light continually flashing on and off as it changes colors. The lack of a need for batteries is a big plus, too!

    • @pico-cosmos

      Spot on! This is how the Ocean Adventure tank’s light should’ve been done, it’s a much nicer effect 👌

    Another great review! You were right on the money about the survival rate with a hydro pets. As I mentioned to you on IG about the tank's base removal, I am restarting my tank but with the Sea Monkey brand packets. I also noticed after a couple of weeks salt crystals and grime would build up along the top. The interior where the water line is would also cake up with gunk. One tip I do have for this tank is after rinsing it out a couple of times to put a tablespoon or two of dry rice in the tank, then fill it up just a third or so other way filled with warm water, put on the lid, and cover the holes and shake it up. It gives enough grit to clean off the walls since the opening is so tiny. Then rinse thoroughly. Thank you so much for this review! Your work is awesome as always!

    • @pico-cosmos

      Ah that’s a great tip with the rice! I’ll definitely remember that when I eventually come around to cleaning this tank when I’m done with it. Glad you enjoyed the video mate :) 🙏 thanks for supporting the channel

    This is quite an interesting product. They made some interesting design choices but unfortunately didn't get the ingredients and instructions right for growing the shrimps themselves. I'm excited to see if this company makes some design changes, because i feel they can challenge more companies out there to make more interesting tanks with USB LEDs like most of us desire.

  • @KoltVEVO
    @KoltVEVO Год назад +10

    This seems like a more convenient tank for work/personal desks since it has the LED light inside and it also can fit a air line in, so you don’t need to have a lot of space for it. I feel like you could make some adjustments to it to fit a heater in there like maybe cut a small hole in the top area to fit it in, or in the back and just patch the hole back up before adding in water. I’m not too sure but I think it’s possible, at least until they do it themselves. Since they’re relatively new, it’s likely they’ll adjust to better suit the growing conditions

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад +3

      That's a good point about modifying it for the heater. I might give it a try 👍

    I always like seeing the bigger tanks. The ones that come with the sea monkeys always seemed way to small to me. I like the fact this one has a built in light tho. Would make an awesome night light and be a relaxing thing to watch before going to sleep.

  • @Nuttilicious
    @Nuttilicious Год назад +8

    I actually really like this kit. The tank is great and functional, the shape is more interesting than a standard sea monkeys kit, and the cycleable lights by themselves are better than any lighting solution Sea Monkeys came up with imo. Just the ability to be able to grow algae in their tank without additional tools is a big winner for me, especially if you seed it early on. doing that might encourage more algae to grow and avoid the crash from the positive feedback loop of ammonia spike and artemia death in the tank. If you give that a try, I'd like to know the results. It's a shame that without that knowledge, the amount of eggs made the colony doomed to fail though. That's the main con for me, but since it's an easy remedy, the tank is functional, and the makers had the foresight of having a resealable strip on the food makes this a win for me.

  • @aquagirl555
    @aquagirl555 Год назад +10

    i love the look of the tank, shame there were too many eggs, might be over compensating for people doing it wrong and having eggs not hatch as the one reviewer you mentioned said. For experienced people it does look like a fun alternative, but a bit sad for someone just trying it out for the first time and don't quite know what they are doing

  • @TodMachin
    @TodMachin Год назад +7

    Another spot on review, John. I love the tank shape, the base, the lighting element from the bottom, the lighting control and it being USB powered. I would like it to be a little smaller and wider with a larger opening at the top. It’s easy for that small lid to slip into the tank. (Personal experience.) The bubbler is worthless. I bought mine early on to test out the competition. My hatch rate was zero but the company seems to have gotten that fixed. But it went from too few to too many. I would LOVE to see Sea-Monkeys release a similar tank with these adjustments made - a deluxe kit with the best of all worlds. In fact, I pitched something very similar that went nowhere. (Surprise, surprise!) Great review!

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад +3

      Yeah there are so many elements to this tank that I'd love to see incorporated into an official Sea-Monkey tank, primarily the LED lights. Basically everything that the Ocean Adventure got wrong with their lighting system has been done the right way with this tank. It's a shame your pitch never went anywhere 😑I guess all we can do is hope at this point. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video though :) I'm back on to script writing today - Sea-Bubble + Magiquarium 🙌

    I had a similar problem with the coral sea dragons tank, far too many eggs hatched, but they mostly died after a few days, i managed to keep some of them alive by changing the water, i guess there was a spike in ammonia, although I thought brine shrimp were quite tolerant of ammonia.
    I really like the circular design of the tank though, I've used a circular glass vase which works well.

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад +3

      Yeah I had the same issue with coral sea dragons! It seems that a lot of these kits add way too many eggs. Hopefully I can find another coral sea dragons kit so I can make a proper RUclips video review for them

Something weird I want to share, I’ve actually swam in a lake full of brine shrimp. Manitou beach, SK is a natural salt lake (stronger than the Dead Sea) in the middle of the prairies. My fam had a cabin close to the beach. A certain time of year you could scoop up some water and 100 shrimp would come with it. Keep making great videos!

My scuds get fed less than 5 times a year and are never heated, even when they got down to near 40 degrees F/4.4 degrees C. I keep them in a plastic gallon jar near a window and the algae grows easily on its own.

  • @anie6142

    Well, now I know that these guys might not survive but I'm still ordering the tank since it is pretty cool. I do know that putting a growth light (at least like the ones I own) right on the tank (touching the walls or very close) generates enough heat to warm the water but not enough to be a hot spot or boil the little guys so that might be an option for heating the tank since the base is raised too high for a heat mat and the tank opening too little for the mini aquarium heater. I might end up using the stickers on cards I mail to friends or to decorate photos but probably not on the tank as it's the original purpose for it. I might cheat and add extra aquarium sea salt to the water to even out the salinity due to the larger water volume but if it still fails at least I tried, and will definitely wait 4 to 5 days to feed the guys because the instructions did mess up on that front. Awesome review and it is a pretty cool tank specially with the light changing feature, I might put this tank on my bedroom and have it on for a while before going to bed since it looks very relaxing.

    • @anie6142
      @anie6142 Год назад +1

      Update! I ordered and received the tank in the mail and I noticed a few key differences. Mine includes a fill line imbedded on the inside of the tank, the salt and egg pouch seems to be bigger and about the same size as the food pouch (no moisture in mine that I could tell but I'd have to open it to be sure), which doesn't have the closing feature as the one in your review, I am not sure if the food formulation changed but guess I'll know once I open it as well, hopefully it's not just spirulina but if it is no a big deal but hopefully it's a finer mix so the baby brine shrimp can eat it easier. The biggest difference I saw was in the feeding instructions, it no longer says 2-3 days before the first feeding, it now says 3-4 days. I haven't tested the light feature and the rest of the instructions and the cable and the stickers seem to be exactly the same. I don't know if these changes were due to this review in particular or if the changes were already in the works due to the reviews of other costumers that purchased this kit.

Though your right on the difficulty on getting air into the tank. And that there were not clear instructions on feeding the shrimp. I did end up feeding them to much and to early, which destroyed the colony. Lessoned learned for my first time at this.

      I got in touch with the company to ask them some background info about this tank but they weren’t too forthcoming with info 😅 not sure if they’re committed enough to the product to improve it but we can hope 🤞

    Thanks for the tip about the included eggs not cutting the mustard. 'Might use salt the from a marine fish tank source and buy some extra brine shrimp eggs in case of sudden epidemics of death. I figure you saved me a week's time.

    Rewatching this video now that I've finally got my own one of these tanks. Very odd that yours doesn't have a fill line--mine does! It even had a sticker on it pointing it out. Perhaps they saw feedback from you and others and updated it! I'm also curious to see if they've reduced the number of eggs in the kit for better survival rates. We'll see! I'll be careful about how much I feed them and how soon as well. Fingers crossed!
    As for heating I've been looking at little flat ones, which would be great, but sadly none seem to have a thermostat on them, and I'm not too keen on cooking my Hydro Pets. Oh well. I'll have to try a mat heater I suppose.

    Awesome Hydro Pets Review. Love the usb led and light changing feature plus resealable packets but its sad to see the product/egg and results only give you few days of success. Additioinally the opening is too small even if you need to clean/ remove algae from the inner walls. It's still a fun idea but you'll need to mix reef salts and add brineshrimp eggs as you did. Hopefully someone day you'll contact the manufacturer and give them your proven & tested reviews so they can design the perfect Picocosmos Sea Monkeys Kit. That has built in designs for aeration heating and ease of maintenance!!! Maybe they can even have a separate single plane of magnifying plastic instead of the bubbles so you can easily attach it to magnify the entire front of the tank. I think this would be better as you can see everything instead of waiting to see a few secs of magnification when the sea monkeys dances into the view port. Cheers mate!

    The fact its usb powered would make it an awesome nightlight, but the design is so pretty, i could see someone adding a cut out of the moon to the back to make it lunar themed, or just painting the base gold or purple to make it look like a glowing crystal ball

    Nice tank review! For some reason when you poured in the egg packet for this tank, I jumped because you spilled some on the side. Usually everything in your videos are so clean, so I wasn't expecting that. LOL! :) I think this tank design is nice like you mentioned, but I would of liked a comparison to how effectively the heat mat was heating the water compared to your other tanks. It would be nice to see you stick a thermometer in there, and do a comparison. Specially for tanks like the Ocean Volcano and the Mars tank. If you can't get a heater in there and the heating mat is not effective, it would be a reason for some not to pick this tank up. Thanks for the review!! ~ Cheers

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад +1

      Haha yeah I think I spilled a little because of the clumpy salt & small tank opening 😅 I think the small opening would probably also make this tank a little difficult to clean too. Oo yeah that’s a good point about using a thermometer! That’s one reason I really love the submersible USB aquarium heater; it has the built in thermostat and gives you a constant temperature reading

    How often should I feed the hydropets once the colony is established? The instructions state every 2 days, but this seems to contradict the instructions from the Sea Monkeys kit that says every 5 days. Just wondering why the despecancy. Is the Hydropets spoon smaller or is the hydrogrub formula less dense? Or is it because it is a larger tank? Thanks!

    I definately like the design, it's a bit reminiscent of old Art Deco fish bowls I've seen and the way they've implemented the LED light is the best off the shelf design I've seen so far.
    Would I consider it? Yes but knowing me you'd know I'd fettle with it rather than using it as is, I'd drill holes in the acrylic and plumb in stuff which your average keeper isn't likely to want to do, I'd maybe use the in box pack with a salt boost in a nursery and use a Sea monkey or aqua dragons kit in the actual tank and add individuals later.
    I am getting Fallout New Vegas Dead money ponderings now I've seen this so if I see one there could be plans afoot.

    If you ever decide to extend your content, and be unfaithful to the brine shrimp, I suggest betta fish. I LOVE them. Beautiful, easy to take care of and don´t require lots of space.
    As for this tank...I don´t like it. The whole aesthetic is so "neat" that gives a modern feeling to it and not something more hands on.
