Along with Truth, Humanity is the first casualty of war. To survive, you are taught to "de-humanize" the enemy. It is part of the basic training and conditioning. But its a lot harder to do when they come face to face with a 16-year-old Hitler Youth, who's been corrupted since the age of 8 into thinking his leader is "Superman" and that he is also a superman. American troops faced real moments like this in January-May 1945. By that time, most of them had been conditioned to Kill SS troops, who were easily recognizable. But Killing kids dressed in uniforms and helmets twice their own size? Many men didn't. A few had too. But toward the end of the war, a lot of guys told me that they would disarm them, give them a few good swats, and send them either back home, or down the line with the other prisoners. That's why a few of the Hitler Youth survived to tell their stories. If the Russians caught them, they were shot, just like regular SS troops. If the SS caught them, they were hanged, like any other "deserter" especially in the battle for Berlin in April-May 1945. So much for "Humanity" in wartime.
@@ohusky271 well Wehrmacht soldiers had very few alternatives even if they believed the whole thing was bs, if you consistently disobeyed orders you would probably be ostracized by your comrades, thus making yourself a target in your back by generals to be provoked or at worse you would be court martialed, either way there was little alternative, and those futile sacrifices those Germans made were all because of the insane ambitions of a madman and his group of sycophants who brought death and destruction across Europe

The toughest scene to watch in Generation War was how Friedhelm had to go back into combat while his mother is crying badly for him to stay. It really broke my heart when I reached that part while watching the show.
It's a very unusual feeling. It's a very unusual happening and a very unusual bonding. Do you remember... the letter that Mike Ranney wrote to me? You do? Do you remember how he ended it? Unfortunately these wars happened and the men and women who died military or civilian will be remembered. That goes for both sides soldiers, sailors, airmen. The ones who committed atrocities and or took belongings from dead enemy soldiers will have to live with that fact, assuming they survived.
Watching this makes me wish someone would make something like BoB or Generation War but that it tells the story of an American Squad and a German Squad. Perhaps even meeting each other at the final months of the War... Which was your most affecting scene? In Generation War the Minefield scene was what really made me cry.
Das Institut For me there was no “moment” where I was most affected. It’s a series of events, of low blows, that made me wince/ gasp in shock. Namely: - That dickhead SS-man Hiemer who executed the child (I literally sat there like Friedhelm- gasping, my hands in front of my mouth) -when Wilhelm shot the Russian POW. I felt so sad for the man.. He knew what was coming and still went along with it in hopes of at least his two captured comrades surviving. -When Wilhelm had a nervous breakdown because he knew they were lost after Kursk -Friedhelm going full-on war criminal after Wilhelm’s ‘death’ (shooting civilians, a kid even, and hanging people in cold blood) - the old Russian couple that invited Wilhelm to eat with them despite him being an enemy, one who carried gasoline, even. They had few to spare and still chose to help him. This series really drives home the horrible conditions and atrocitiesof war.
Wilhelm's mental breakdown he KNEW he would be the only one to survive the firefight and he was mostly right he didn't know that his little brother was still alive which was why he gave up he had noone anymore
