  • Stephen Gately was an Irish singer and songwriter Interviewed by Renée Vervoorn at Pepsi Pop in the Netherlands in 2000, best known as a member of the pop group Boyzone. With Boyzone, he had 16 consecutive top 5 UK singles and the group's albums all hit number one in the UK. He released a solo album in 2000 and appeared in stage productions, television shows, and contributed songs to various projects. In 2008, he rejoined Boyzone for a series of concerts and recordings, becoming part of the first gay couple in a boyband music video for "Better". Gately came out as gay in 1999 and married Andrew Cowles in 2003 in a commitment ceremony and 2006 in a civil partnership ceremony. He died in 2009 from a congenital heart defect. He is remembered as a hero of gay rights for his response to being "smoked out of the closet".
