The American Bittern

  • Of all the birds I have admired over the years, I must admit that the American Bittern is by far the most interesting. I had only seen them a few times in the wild and as luck would have it I could never catch them on film until now. I am simply fascinated by this bird, everything from its unusual plunger like call to the way it mimics the windy marsh grass has made it one of my favorites for years. I have paddled right between them while I could hear them singing from only a few feet away and yet still without being able to capture a glance of these amazingly stealthy marsh birds. The American Bittern needs our help because the wetlands it calls home are becoming more rare every year. Its up to each one of us to do our own part in our own community to help preserve the natural world. There really is a future in a clean and healthy Earth so I hope you can join me in helping protect our Mother Earth and all its wonders. I hope you enjoy and share this film with as many as you can to keep spreading the conservation message. Until next time, you can join me at my website www.naturewalkswithmark.org and thanks to the support of my friends we now have a new group helping to raise wildlife awareness called the Nature Walks Conservations Society www.naturewalksCS.org

    how these birds haven't landed the lead role of an animated movie is beyond me, the way they move is already comedic and there down facing eyes are cute and funny

    My husband and I are fortunate enough to have two pairs that next in our backyard that is some marshy areas. The first time we heard it it was very strange! I have often looked out my living room window and have seen them on my property hanging out by the garden. What a pleasure and blessing to have these birds!

    We heard this strange bird and could not figure out what it was. Finally we went down to the marsh while at dusk while he was making his noise and we saw him only by his movement while grunting. We are in New Hampshire and this is the first time we have ever heard this bird.

    There is a bittern wintering at the nature preserve I'm interning at. They don't usually winter in my area so the birders line up like paparazzi to get a photo of him 😁

    We bought some land in the beautiful State of Maine several years ago, by the East Machias River. I enjoy canoeing and fishing and listening to birds frogs etc. So as I am bumbling along on the river in the spring one year here comes this incredible eerie sound and I ran to record it in order to ask around, there are knowledgeable people around SO I THOUGHT, anyway...to make it short NOBODY knew what was making that noise. Now there is this deep booming sound and I thought it takes a sizable body to act as a resonator in order to produce such low frequency volume, it had to be something big! Crocodiles, alligators and hippos are out, what could it be! Deer, Elk and Moose are out, I am thinking, so in God's name, what could it be! AHA! Snapping turtles, they could lay there in the water and produce... no that was no snapping turtle they are mousy quiet! So I am going back to my European roots, and there IS A BIRD in the Fen around the lakes in Central Europe, it's German name being ROHRDOMMEL, now this customer is known to cause the unwary fisherman to jump into the air with shock ..translation of Rohrdommel...Bittern. RUclips research and THERE YOU HAVE IT! the solution found thank you youtube!

    Beautiful bird. Just got back from a walk in the wetlands in Oregon, and we heard the unusual call. We walked around and eventually found it disguised in the reeds.

    The footage and narration are great. But do we need the slasher movie music & sound effects, lol? I saw 2 bitterns yesterday in my local wetlands park, NorCal.

    • @rachelweiler911
      @rachelweiler911 8 лет назад

      +bateriadepetaluma Do you know if Least Bitterns make it up to NorCal? I saw a bunch of very strange birds in Berkeley a few days ago that I think may have been bitterns. Never seen anything like them before.

    • @bateriadepetaluma
      @bateriadepetaluma 8 лет назад

      +Rachel Weiler We saw two in Petaluma last week along the river wetlands/marsh. I don't think bitterns would be together in a bunch; you would normally just see a single or a pair. One guess what you might have seen: black-crowned night heron? They roost at night in a colony.

    • @rachelweiler911
      @rachelweiler911 8 лет назад

      +bateriadepetaluma That was the other theory I had! They had a black stripe on the back and head, and I think some may have had a plume. The shape of the neck looked maybe more like the bittern, but I think you're probably right that black-crowned night herons are the likelier suspect. Thanks!

    Wish I could find a video where there's NO music and NO talking. We have one in the creek right now and it's loud. Last year they were here and we did see it but they do blend in for sure with the weeds and cat tails at the creek.

    I discover this bird from a russian titled video that has the bittern raise its neck up real tall and look directly at the viewer.
    And honestly, I ask please excuse my harsh and crude choice of words but this bird is freaking weird.

    i heard, though never saw, one(?) in 7 foot tall grass at Alabaster Mi, a migratory stopover for them - many "Danger-Sinkholes" signs (result of blasting for Alabaster) the bird sounds like a heavy glass pop bottle dropping into water from 6 feet-
