    Keto Diet Fish | WORST Fish to Eat on a Ketogenic Diet | Keto Food Advice- Thomas DeLauer
    Tilapia:
    Farm Raised
    Tilapia is also fed methyltestosterone, which makes them grow bigger, but has been found to be toxic for our livers - In fact, methyltestosterone has been pulled off the market in Germany due to toxicity fears
    Cancer Risk/Dioxin
    Dioxins are found in tilapia and are a group of chemically-related compounds that are persistent environmental pollutants
    Once dioxins enter the body, they last a long time because of their chemical stability and their ability to be absorbed by fat tissue, where they are then stored in the body - half-life in the body is estimated to be 7 to 11 years
    It’s well-known for its ability to damage the immune system and interfere with hormonal systems and has been linked to birth defects, inability to maintain pregnancy and decreased fertility, among others
    Omega 3’s
    A serving of tilapia has 135 milligrams of omega 3’s, whereas a serving of salmon has over 2,000 milligrams of omega-3’s
    Swordfish:
    Swordfish is among the species of fish that is very high in mercury, an environmental contaminant that can cause brain damage
    The mercury found in fish is methylmercury - mercury is released into the air and then settles onto the land and into the water
    Bacteria and other microorganisms convert the mercury into methylmercury
    Then, fish and shellfish in the water begin to absorb it - fish that eat other fish and who live longer have higher levels of methylmercury
    Methylmercury is toxic to the central nervous system - the brain and spinal cord and can cause irreversible damage (brains of unborn babies and infants are especially susceptible)
    How much damage is done depends on how much you are exposed to the chemical
    The effects of methylmercury poisoning include cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, impaired mental functioning, impaired lung function, growth problems, and having a small head
    Specifically, injuries caused by methylmercury (MeHg) in the central nervous system are related to its ability to increase reactive oxygen species
    Mercury also has the ability to increase the permeability of chloride channels of GABA A receptors in the dorsal root ganglion, which is associated with neuronal hyperpolarization
    Tuna:
    A 100 g of raw yellowfin tuna has 108 calories, 0 carbs, 0.9 g fat and 23.4 g protein, while the bluefin variety is fattier and more flavourful - it contains 144 calories per 100 g, 0 carbs, 4.9 g fat, and 23.3 g protein
    It’s rich in selenium, magnesium and potassium, but in terms of fat, it’s not the most favorable for keto
    Additionally, tuna is one of the larger sea predators, and because of being high in the food chain, it contains higher levels of mercury than most other fish (yellowfin tuna has the most)

    1. Tilapia, low in omega 3s and often are farmed and fed awful diets such as chicken poo.
    2. Swordfish- higher up on food chain so may be feeding on and building up chemically contaminated (ie.Mercury) smaller fish.
    3.Tuna.Same as swordfish. Canned tuna is actually better because it's usually younger and less contaminated

    I would advise everyone to ensure it is tuna in the can. It could be Barracuda.
    Which has flesh full of worms. They grade the fish by how prevalent the worms are and quite often substitute tuna with it when canning. I havent eaten canned tuna for well over 35yrs. I use to work in a fish processing plant in my younger days.

    New to keto so just want clarification. How is eating tuna in oil taking away from the oil or omegas in the fish. I’m asking based on the comment the oil should come from the fish, not the oil in the can. Isn’t it still coming from the fish AND the added olive oil? Is it such a horrible thing to get oil from both the tuna or salmon and the olive oil? Thank you for clarifying.

You can catch these beautiful fish in all of the 50 states and they taste wonderful as well as nutritious. Not to mention fishing is fun and it's a lot cheaper than going to the store and purchasing fish that you have no idea where it came from nor how it was raised for the environment it was in. Tbh even if you raised them yourself they are just an all around disgusting fish in terms of lifestyle and diet. They will eat sewage run off, decaying plant matter, basically all the junk in the water. They are a slightly grosser grass carp for brackish/saltwater.
      The way they spawn is the females lay the eggs in the males mouth, then another male fertilizes the eggs. The males then fast until the eggs hatch out. As a result they have a long period without food, that is most likely why they become a trash dumpster in terms of diet.

    Hi, my nutritionist told me that IF and a keto diet dont go together because if you fast for too long during the day, when you break that fast no matter what you eat, that it will kick you out of ketosis to start gluconeogenesis, how true is this?

    • @Durtly
      @Durtly 5 лет назад +1

      I don't think that's accurate. Gluconeogenisis is not an efficient mechanism, your body doesn't do it unless it's "desperate for essential carbs", and the only carbs that are essential is the very Very VERY small amount it needs for certain specific brain functions. So when the body converts proteins to carbs it doesn't create enough to kick you out of ketosis.
      IF and Keto are practically made for each other. From my own experience doing both at the same time has additive benefit. i.e. Keto=1, IF=1, Keto +IF=3

    • @eliascontreras1951
      @eliascontreras1951 5 лет назад

      Durtly thats what i told her that keto and IF go great together but she kept denying it, that you cant fast because it will kick you out of ketosis no what what you break your fast with, she also said that coconut oil is bad

    • @Adler114KF
      @Adler114KF 5 лет назад

      This is first time I heard about it. Does your nutritionist try Keto and IF, or she studied it and if she studied she didn't study enough. I am on Keto and IF (1-2 meals a day) and I check regularly my ketones (through the blood) and they are very high. With all respect, I think she is not right.

    • @eliascontreras1951
      @eliascontreras1951 5 лет назад +1

      Mazinga_KF same, first time i heard it from her too, i was like no way, the only thing that can kick you out of ketosis is consuming too many carbs or excess protein, but if you break a fast lets say an egg then youre good, and she said no even if its egg your body will still use gluconeogenesis for having no glucose and trying to turn it into that and it will break ketosis immediately and i was like wtf

Lots of people are talking about them right now (mostly citing Sally K Norton's research) as a hidden toxicity risk in keto/paleo diets because some foods that are popular in the keto community happen to be very high in oxalates (e.g. swiss chard, kale, asparagus, most nuts and seeds).

    This was great, a lot I didn’t know. What about fish roe or caviar? Are all fish eggs essentially created equal, or should we avoid certain types?

    I started buying a lot of this frozen preseasoned salmon from Safeway over the past month but was wondering how there was 10g carbs in it....then saw in the ingredients that they use maltodextrin with what they season it with.....

    What is the difference when you buy Wild Tilapia vs Farmed? I only buy wild fish.

    Don't dismiss tuna, it's a good source of nutrition _(protein and omega 3)._ It depends on where it's caught.

    I saw in another one of your recent videos, to not eat canned tuna. Something about the canning process (heating) leached chemicals into the tuna. The suggestion in that video was to use the pouches of tuna.

    I love your vids but I hate fish so all of them are bad to me lol. I’d bet a dollar tilapia is #1 though. That’s some nasty shit

    I'm very curious to know if Anchovies are good to eat in general and on Keto?

    • @nicholaschau6770
      @nicholaschau6770 5 лет назад +1

      Yes Darie, in fact most small fishes, such as anchovies and sardines have high protein content, with high micronutrients and minimal toxins. Just add some healthy fat and they are good on Keto as well.

      Agreed the smaller the fish the better.

    Hey I was wondering if you had any suggestions on fish to eat grown in aquaponics? I prefer to grow my own food and aquaponics is great to grow vegetables as well as fish/crustaceans... the most common is Tilapia, is it still just as bad for you when you're raising them yourself? (I havent grown them,just curious.)

    What about herring fillets. They are rich in Omega 7s and omega 3s.

    I was pretty worried when I saw the title of this video! Fortunately, none of the fish I eat made it on this list! I love fish, so that would have kinda sucked! lol
    Thanks for the info Thomas!!
