I don’t say this lightly. I’ve been an slr user for 40 yrs. I’ve learnt more from Gavins videos than from anywhere else. Such a great manner, easy to follow and packed with information and tips.
When I get a notification that Gavin Hoey posted a video, I drop EVERYTHING and watch it. That last shot of Fernie's eye is beautiful! Thanks for posting and all the best to you and Sam in 2021!
Gavin Hoey videos are gold for any photographers - perhaps platinum - or gold+platinum. Just watch them. All of them. And if you're an experienced professional? Well, watch through each and try to be the first to find any mistakes (you likely won't find them, but prove me wrong). Keeping it simple. Awesome content.
Always great content with Gavin. SO many talents with Seth, Joe, Daniel, Vanessa and the rest. Adorama is producing great content, especially for a hobbyist photog like me.
Gavin Hoey is photography super hero, I wonder just how many he has helped along on their photography journey, he's just cheered me up with this video and his energy plus the fact that he's gone to the trouble of making this video on new years eve. Happy New Year to you Gavin, the lovely Fern and Mrs Hair=blower Hoey and all of my fellow Hoey subscribers.
This is absolutely one of the best tutorials on creating a portrait ever made. Thanks for keeping it simple and displaying your settings along the way. Thanks for not representing selling out for a specific product which takes away from the tutorial. Some of your viewers can’t afford some of that equipment.
Masha Allah! The greatest tutor on the internet for Photography. Thank you Sir. Love your videos.. Greetings from Chowdry Photography, Bengaluru, India.
My New Year's Eve coffee was delicious this morning; being enhanced by the Gavin, Fern, and Sam tutorial. Cheers to you all! And have a cup of tea to celebrate. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Always enjoy these tutorials great for beginners and more advanced and it was great to see the leaf blower in action as an alternative to wafting boards, I have been on the lookout for something budget and compact rather than a proper studio fan as I dont use often and dont have space just need to find one with a latching power switch so I can use hands free!
Although I'm missing the standard smoke machine in this video ;-), I appreciate this crisp and clear educational clip. Thanks a lot for all similar stuff of the past (pandemic) year, keep on going with these kind of videos and have good start into 2021 !!! All the best to you all and stay safe & healthy !!!
Gavin, Sam and all the various models enlisted over the years always deliver ! Shame there was no smoke for the final video of 2020 (joking). Stay safe, everyone. Have a Happy New Year and let us hope that 2021 will allow some return to "normal" in the coming months.
You’re a very good educator. This one was relevant and timely as I’ve been teetering at the edge of attempting portrait photography. Thanks for making it easy to follow. 🙏🏼
I keep watching this video multiple times. Great content on fundamentals. @gavin, will it make a difference if using Octa softbox vs the softbox you are using. And can you please post on how much the distance the model is standing from the wall and distance between model and the softbox to get this result in the video.
Hi Sir, Like always a very informative and well done video. I'd like to ask you a question about your flash settings in a lighting setup like this: you talk about the small diffusion pannel, but you don't talk about the zoom parameter that we can find on many speedlight. Does this zoom parameter have an impact on the whole lighting, should it be set to the focal length of the lens you use or to the widest value possible? Thank you !
Happy New Year Gavin. Thank you for another great video. Would you mind sharing the information on your textured wall background such as material and paint? Thanks in advance.
I couldn't help but think that Fern's outfit was a bit like the painting of the girl with the pearl earring. But another great video. Hopefully I will make the time to pick up the camera more this new year. Flash is still something I struggle with. Maybe I need to make it simple again with these tips.
@@GavinHoey yes it is my first flash and I am Extremely happy and can't wait to use it and it was a Christmas present from my Dad and it is amazing too.
Really interresting; with that and the flash tutorial by Vanessa Joy about making use of flash in daylight, I think I will improove my use of flash in both studio and outdoor conditions :-)
Great content as usual Gavin. Thank you for sharing. Would you mind explain how and what exactly you have used from tether tools to connect to your ipad? I love your little blower it's very cute.
Hi Gaven - I've followed you for years, and enjoy (and learn from) your tutorials. However, I do have a point I'd like to bring to your attention about your use of the phrase "flash sync speed" which you used in the context of this tutorial. It seems to imply that 1/250, or whatever speed their camera manual lists, is the ONLY shutter speed that will sync with flash. Obviously, this is not the case, as any shutter speed slower will also sync with flash. I believe if you inserted the term "MAXIMUM" sync speed instead, it might be better comprehended by your viewers that there are other slower speeds, but, case in point, in order to better darken the room, it is best to utilize your camera's "maximum" sync speed.
I just ordered the Godox TT600 + X1T-C, Godox 80cm umbrella type softbox. This video is short & sweet. Please put a video about same but with outside environment (if/when to use hss)...
Can't wait to get out and shoot on location again. In the meantime, you'll find lots of HSS on location videos on Adorama TV. Here's one of mine ruclips.net/video/3tVVIi5B23U/видео.html
You could swap out the softbox for a shoot through (white) umbrella or the diffuser from a 5in1 reflector or even some white fabric... Would it be exactly the same? No. Would it still work? Absolutely.
Hi Tim. I'm using Olympus Capture and Workspace software on my Lenovo Miix tablet PC (which runs on Windows 10). Not owning an Apple anything I can't help with iPad suggestions
Hi Michael. That'll be the Tether Tools AreoTab Mount. Links to a lot of the gear I use are in the video description but if you can't access it here's the one for the mount www.adorama.com/ttatl4.html

I RARELY give thumbs up on videos about photography, but you got one. I learned something today. Well done!
I always enjoy Gavin’s videos. He’s enthusiastic and inspiring.
Gavin the humble knight!
I learned photography when I didn’t have any camera and that’s why Gavin is the best in teaching , keeping it simple and yet professional.
Another great video ! Thankyou Gavin & Adorama !
My favorite photographer hands down!
When Fern is the model you know there are going to be some great images coming. The two of you make a great team.

Hi Gavin!!!
Thanks for the vídeo!

Excellent info. Thanks for sharing.
Happy & crazy nice 2021!
Love that this one was dialed in from scratch making metering mode irrelevant.
Yep manual flash means no metering required. One less thing to get distracted by 😉
Happy New Year !

Lovely images Gavin, and a great breakdown of the process. Happy New Year to you and Sam 😊😊

Thanks for this concise explanation. I have been struggling with background lighting in a small space. This is perfect.
Awsome work as always ! I leans so much form your vids ! Congratulations

My fav Adorama host 🙌🏼
HAPPY NEW YEAR, Gavin!
Likewise 👍
Nice back to basics video but I'm curious as to what device you're tethered to? Looks a smaller solution than using my laptop.
This is the best that happened in 2020!
Arguably a low bar to pass 😉 Joking aside, thank you 👍
Great concise video!

I like the idea of latched power on the blower John. It would beat my DIY fix of using Velcro!
Another great video! Thanks and Happy New Year Fernie, Gavin and Sam
Thanks Alan and happy new year to you too 👍
Awesome. Discovering your videos was definitely a bright spot in 2020 for me. Thanks for the inspiration. Happy New Year!
I'm really glad Adorama TV has helped you with 2020, it did the same for me too 👍

Thank you Mr Gavin, you are a blessing . Quick question, the monitor you are tethered to, what model is it? Or is it a tablet?
Like your videos! Gavin.
Thanks for this basic setting video. I will share it with group of photography students as they missed studio lighting classes because virus issue.

Thank you very much Gavin! I have only one question: Did you retouch with photoshoot the photos of the end?
