It helps that he is a handsome gentleman with good bone structure, though. I say this as an artist, I do drawings. It was useful, as he caught on, to use his own structure. Making a bust takes time, I have done fine, but smaller work in wood, myself, as my father was a carver, and carpenter by labour of love.
thank You for the video. the video is very helpful. Now I'm carving wood and I encourage you to see it, if you have a free moment and willingness to see how I'm doing. but i wanted to say i want to sculpt human body and your video very helpful. thank you again. :)
Thank you brother. I was struggling getting my valkyrie to not look like a 49ers lineman. Then I'll finish it's my first of the female form everything else I've ever done has been male.
This is so cool! I've seen archeological digs where they pull out a skull and I know it's either a male or female because of all the things you just showed us!!!! The brow ridge is always my first clue. Men have the massive thick sculpted bone and women have a small smooth tiny brow ridge bone. There is a tiny dip between a woman's brow bone and her forehead. A man's, well I could lay my little finger in his!
The Great Artists and Mult-Talented Geniuses throughout the Ages such as Aristotle , Michelangelo and DaVinci studied Anatomy, Morphology and even cadaver dissection because they knew it was key to creating their sensitive artistic renderings……
Unless you are doing a face of a certain figure. Such as your wife who has Cherokee Indian in her family. Indians have a lower or longer cheek bone and black women usually but not all the time have larger noses and bigger lips. Good tips Alec enjoy these little tipperoos
He was just providing the very basic differences. Obviously, there are many additional differences between races, but that would be overwhelming. Waaaay too much information for an introduction to carving. Just sayin'...
Excellent information, Alec. For us visual learners it would be great to have a male bust for a side-by-side comparison. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks Tom! Will do next time!

@MessickGreg Thanks for your insight, though! It's the next step when individualizing your work; noticing those subtle differences.
