I actually really love Happy Sugar Life, it was unlike anything else I had seen. How many anime give you a psychopath as a main character, and you end up feeling regret for her by the end. Satou did awful, unredeemable things, but it was all for Shio. And seeing her shield her from the fall was surprisingly touching, pretty much sacrificing herself. We’re talking about a girl who grew up with a terrible, abusive aunt that had men in and out the door every week. She had no clue what love really was, and didn’t know how to express it. Shio was pretty much her other half, and they had a mother to daughter type relationship. Satou is a tragic character in every sense of the word. The ending was bittersweet. Asahi gets his sister back, Satou is dead, but at the cost of Shio’s own sanity.

Doubt it's in the same vein as these other shows given it's a practically hentai comedy as opposed to a melodeamatic mess that tackles taboo subject matter in often piss poor ways (that can get an epic wtf reaction out of viewers and anyone being told about what happens) like all 3 Surviving anime covered so far are.

Honestly Happy Sugar Life is a fantastic show. One of my favorites of 2018. Completely subverted my expectations and I'm glad I watched it, even if it was traumatizing. Rather disappointed in how misrepresented it was here. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it wasn't exactly exploitative (in fact it was very subversive of some of those tropes) in the way something like Eromanga Sensei was. The visual direction was really good and the themes might've been a bit heavy handed, but it wasn't done poorly. Sad to see it misinterpreted smh
