YongYea yes this is bad. But obviously there's 3 years of work done on Anthem. So I don't see this as that strange. sovieToilet There is no such thing as a KotoR MMO. I think you mean TOR. Comparing/confusing them is an insult to KotoR. It's great example of how EA ruins everything it's greedy hands touch.
im not gonna lie, although i didn't preorder, i was pretty hyped for this regardless of EA. im a sucker for open world games, but the more news i hear anything about EA, the more reasons why im glad i didn't buy into the hype early on
Well that’s not fucking good. This is exactly what happened with Mass Effect Andeomeda. They lost their best narrative writer and the game went down hill fast. It’s clear though that if EA crush Bioware there will be an uprising in the gaming community.
I can't see that happening. Bioware squandered their audience when they released consistently worse games year after year since their acquisition. People play Bioware games for story and rpg gameplay and those two things have been left by the wayside for open world and "better general gameplay" most likely to try and capture a wider and stupider audience.
Perhaps if EA crushed Bioware before the Mass Effect: Andromedabomination controversy started with Manveer and the shitty employees within the company, then yeah, people would be pissed. Bioware has been dead and gone for the majority of the gaming populace for a good couple/three years now.
What are they gonna do to EA? Anyone who gave a fuck is already boycotting their games. Besides the Bioware people loved is long gone and is not coming back. The people who made Bioware what it was are gone.
Bioware is dead. If Anthem fails, they get shut down. If Anthem is successful, they become the Anthem team. They are never gonna make anything they use to.
akba666 agreed, ea are probably forcing bioware to make anthem it's big live service game, which they'll then just keep adding to with dlc and updates over time, thus bioware will just become, as you say, the anthem team, being forced to make updates for anthem and nothing more. It's a real fucking shame, 3 of my favourite games of all time are from bioware, star wars kotor, mass effect 2 and jade empire, at their best bioware were one of the best devs in gaming, but I don't think they'll ever reach that level again. Shame, real shame.
Sure EA is shit, but Bioware under their supervision is what you should be concerned about, regardless if it surprises you or not, the poor people in Bioware are truly suffering
Thomas Murrell Im aware they did thaf to save their company, but i sure do hope they still deliver the quality they did with TF2, and not completely selling out to EAs deadass greed
I'm sure Anthem was supposed to have a paper-thin story anyway, like Destiny. He was probably writing them solid gold, from lore to sidequests, and they just threw it back at him like, "What is this crap? Characters? Motivation? Structure? We just need you to write a leaflet on why Robot Suit Army Am Good and Aliens Badguys Are Bad. We've already spent the money on the blue lazer being shot into the sky. What are you even doing? We need internet savvy one-liners for our new funny sidekick, RobCrob. He's cute isn't he? Make sure you give him lots of good lines. And I mean GOOD lines, like, "it's 420 in the hizzouse bitch" and a quote from that rank and marty show. Oh, and make sure he reminds them of the online store where they can get our new single use weapons for only 5.99 each..."
I can see this happening. The guy is an awesome storyteller, but EA has no need for compelling stories, they just want to give the players a reason to shoot shit.
They're jumping ship, because anyone who isn't blind can see that Anthem isn't going to do well in the eyes of EA, no matter the number of copies sold.
To be honest, they brought this upon themselves. They were not forced to sell to EA. They were not forced to copy the "success" of Destiny. They were not forced to inject social justice politics into their games... at least they weren't until they invited Anita Sarkeesian.
They flat out said this wasn't going to be a story driven game at the start. Something along the lines of 'it doesn't matter why the world in anthem is the way it is. It just is.' I'd have to google it for the exact quote
Just like how we blame directors but really its the producers and studio heads (& investors) who are really pulling the strings...Devs / Directors will take the blame and can't talk back because they'll be persecuted by the industry. Sad world.....
The obsession for the 4k is a big problem. Andromeda was fill with desertic et nordic scenery for this reason. And on a console, i as a programmer a do not think the final product have a chance to resemble the advertising. And i have forgot the visit of the studio by anita sarkeesian. For me, it's pretty much a kiss of death.
I agree with the comparison between Karpyshyn and Laidlaw... It seems story driven games are dying and being replaced with loot boxes ridden multi-player games.
TheGamerTronShow only by a couple of AAA & the rest are Indies. The AAA industry is in a war with themselves and with us. A war about Profit vs Integrity. Actual Work vs Lazy MTXes.
I didn't mind Laidlaw's departure... he sort of single-handedly destroyed the Dragon Age series of games after Origins, where he was promoted to take over them.... just saying... it's not a big loss.
@FluxSorrow - Yeah, though it'd be nice if Sony remembered that they are making games, first - and narrative single-player experiences second. Sony's story heavy games tend to come at the price of gameplay. Worse, they're starting to overly ape the Last of Us type of experience, and eventually people are going to get sick of that formula. At which point the blame will be laid at the feet of "gamers just not being interested in story based games" anymore - as it has in the past when genres get stale. "If people get tired of "MY" game formula and design philosophy, then obviously they're just not interested in the entire genre anymore."
Might as well just cancel the whole thing right now... It's not like anyone is hyped for this anyway. Bioware is dead, it's been since Dragon Age 2. What we have today is nothing but a miserable pretender, a fake that isn't even 1/4th of what Old Bioware was. EA, just put it out of it's misery already. Normally i hate when you kill your studios like this but "Bioware" is pretty much begging for it at this point. Let it finally rest.
Yep Dragon Age II was my WTF Bioware moment...and Andromeda was the point where I said enough is enough and Bioware/EA (especially EA) will never see another dime.
Han Solo Yes. Bioware is dead and those employees talent and skills will be much better used in studios that actually give a shit about creating a good game.
What happens to Bioware is not our problem. They've made terrible games since Dragon Age 2. That means they've had a decade to find new jobs. "I made Dragon Age Origins" should have been enough for them to land virtually anywhere.
I agree completely...You know whats strange? This little idea of the 'positive interaction.' It's basically is the idea that you can have a positive interaction with someone, but little do you know, they hate things you *like* behind your back, but you never know it because you had a positive interaction about a different subject, with no mention of this other thing they dislike...ever get that feeling? The idea that the person that you had a happy conversation with could be the same person you could have a flame war with if you got off on the wrong foot..
It could be more mundane. In the modern business environment, the biggest raises are gained by jumping to a new company. It could be less about rats leaving a sinking ship, and more a company not reinforcing their own worn out foundation.
Josh Phillips some people say that about kojima death stranding and he making good time and pace on it. Though can't compare apples to Orange's. But a little optimism would hurt once in a while.
Why is EA so insistent on using their Frostbite engine? Is it because they save money versus licensing another engine or a matter of pride? I keep hearing how the engine is messing up development or making it harder for other non-battlefield games to work...
It's all about the money. Licensing a 3rd party engine like Unreal or Unity for a while studio is expensive. Since Frostbite is in-house it only costs EA development time, if they bother to put any money into that. Ideally it would also allow their studios to share assets and resources (like refined animations) again reducing costs. However Frostbite was never designed for anything but a first person shooter made by DICE. Which never really needed a big scripted events system, or large numbers of cinematic cut scenes. It is unlikely that EA was willing to pony up the cash and Dev time to really build Frostbite into a usable universal toolset. Instead they very likely forced internal studios to commit project time and money to adding to Frostbite in ad-hock hackerish ways. Trying to double dip on development dollars in a very bad way.
It´s true that the games look fantastic and that´s the only thing they need for marketing and sell millions. The actual game or the pain on the developers doesn´t look to matter much to EA. Also, EA.
Paranoid and overly pessimistic is the current state of AAA gaming and you ain't alone on that boat yong. For the first time I am not excited about e3 because I am sure that whatever fancy trailers they show its just gonna be " how are they going to fuck this up with lootboxes and microtransactions" I am calling it now 98 percent of games shown at E3 are gonna be live service crap and battle royale
I'm excited to see if death stranding makes any developments or platinum comes up with more entertainment or updates on god of war. You just gotta find the brands who have principles.
Death Stranding and Last of Us pt 2 are the only things I'm looking forward to seeing. I have faith that Death Stranding will pan out well, assuming the gameplay is solid. (no pun intended) Nobody has a clue what the gameplay will be like so I'm a bit cautious with DS. As far as Last of Us pt 2, I feel the game will be awesome, I'm just hoping the interactions with enemies are something like the original intent for the first game. I also hope Naughty Dog doesn't fill the multiplayer with lootbox style bullshit like they did with Uncharted 4's multiplayer. That was really annoying. I refused to buy those chests, so instead I grinded for 2 months and never got the P90 I was after. Then I lost interest and stopped playing. I'm going to drink a beer now. I'm done typing. kthxbai.
Pre-ordering it. After Mass Effect Andromeda was pretty okay for a game despite the crybaby click bait that happened from youtubers, I've figured 90% of what people like Yongyea say is just bullshit they say that they think their fans will like in order to get the most clicks. It looks fun, it's by a studio that usually does shit right, and ME3 was fairly enjoyable too. So why not pre-order it if I feel like it? Its assuredly going to be worth the purchase price, and frankly, fuck off to anyone saying not to do so :D
It's not only if the game is good or not. Sometimes, games come with savefile bugs that erases all your progress or there is a bug that makes the game annoying or even unplayable. Sometimes they advertises features that aren't present in the game like no man's sky's online play or some Gran Turismo's promised features that never happened. Preordering a game is at some extent like supporting a fraudulent kickstarter. No matter if it is Cyberpunk 2077, Death stranding HL3, Anthem or GTA6. if you don't reply I consider myself Poe'd.
TheR1chman Hes actually a feminist supporter hes constantly re tweeting sam maggs ya know that chick from bioware who claimed to be "virtually raped" in gta 5 this guys a shell of himself who cares
As bad as it is, for everyone to see a product fail. But sometimes, it just has to. Or this EA circle jerk will never end! And once they close Bioware for good. They can't market it as a "Bioware" game anymore. That would be the only honest thing in a long time, coming from the likes of EA. Because many people still think, todays Bioware is still the same Bioware from the Baldurs Gate times. It simply is not! All the good devs, got replaced by corporate slaves...
Mass Effect 3 was a bad conclusion to a trilogy about choice. Dragon Age: Inquisition was poorly written fan fiction and a mediocre "single player MMORPG". Mass Effect: Andromeda was bad from a technical standpoint and was hugely unpopular. I haven't played it or even looked into playing it so I can't make any judgement beyond those. Mass Effect 2 was good - not great; in some ways a step down from Mass Effect 1 and in others a step up. Dragon Age 2 was decent, but only if you took it for what it was and not as a Dragon Age sequel. It was a dumbed down version of a CRPG, with triple A-polish and middle-market everything else... which would have been fine if it was a middle market game (I love me some Spyders' games) but it wasn't. The Old Republic was decent at launch but is now a pale shadow of what it was. I don't want Anthem to be bad, but it probably will be. Bioware hasn't made a good game in a long time. They abandoned their "roots" a long time ago. They've been riding on their name and IPs that people who no longer work there created. CD Project Red, Larian Studios, Obsidian, and possibly Spyders (we will see if their next release is on par with Witcher 2) are the future of single player RPGs.
You can put Interdimensional games in your list, their two games are clunky but it remind me of ME1 (you know, choices, consequences etc...). And i agree about Spiders, they're promising.
stevensays1 This is one of those rate times i will actually defend EA and say that it wasn't their fault. It's mostly retardness and stupid decisions Bioware themselves made over the years that lead them to where they are today.
Well when bioware inevitably goes to the chopping block, I'm going to try to remember bioware for how it used to be before the dark times. Rest In peace bioware, you have brought a lot of joy and a lot of disappointment.
Pardon my bluntness, but what kind ignoramus lets a talent of Karpyshyn's caliber leave during such a critical juncture ? Its bad PR and its bad for the final quality of the game.
This game has no chances of a success because people actually DON'T want it to succeed. What people actually want is to see Anthem Crash and Burn in Oblivion. Why? Out of spite towards EA(As well as Bioware to lesser extend). See this is exactly what happens when you keep taking advantage of your customers and fans. You made them so upset that they literally want you, and everything you stand for gone from the face of this planet. You might as well become another Konami and start making pachinko games because you're beyond winning your fans' trust back no matter what you do at this point.
If EA or even Konami made a good game not full with microtransactions and content locked in DLC people would forgive and support it. Look at Capcom: they have bastardized DMC, resident evil and released street fighter like it was early access last year but now with RE7 and monster hunter everything is fine and they look like a role model. The thing is EA and Konami don´t want to make games and sell them for profit, they are into digital gambling and whale hunting so they don´t really care about the actual video game market
Alibaba They already have gamble slot machines build-in certain IP's. When you use that as a core game mechanic you've abandoned prior ways of making a quality game.
I want Anthem to be bad. Not just bad, but soooo bad that EA loses millions and Bioware is shut down indefinitely. Not the same studio that ppl are reminiscent/fond of, from their prior games. Good f'ing riddance. Just let them die. It's preferable to them becoming yet another Bungie...
Only because they got bought out, and are now fully controlled by the monsters that are EA; I feel sorry for the studio at Bioware - must suck and I don't blame people for leaving!
I actually want bioware to fail. No offense but i just want them to stop using Bioware's reputation to bait customers buying their game. Many people already left, even the current Bioware can somehow survive, not that many games worth playing. I'm a fan of Bioware and also a hard core fan of Dead Space (cant remember where the franchise come from rn, typing at 3am). They already killed Dead Space because "no one want to play single player" bs from EA, now I just want to let Bioware rest in peace. Stop molesting their dead body XD (need to change tone, too serious lol)
I'm surprised anyone had any hopes left for Bioware considering EA's track record of the studios its destroyed over the years. Ever since ME3, the games got progressively worst ending from DA:I to one of the worst games Bioware has released a.k.a ME:A.
you don't leave a triple AAA game company because you're "exhausted" to then go work for a new game studio and freelance lol, freelance work is not easy street. office jargon statement. Bioware is a sinking slow ship.
you're not understanding how the pieces of the puzzle comes together, man comes back, man becomes annoyed with their principles, man finds new company to work with, offers better pay, principles, approaches to gaming, man leaves triple A. Freelance is his hobby, hes not trying making a living off of it, it just so happens his spectacular profile nets him money on the side.
He’s going to freelancing and working for another company as well as personal projects. That’s not straight forward or not exhausting. His statement screams generic comment. He made be doing so to secure more money and come back but as history has shown us with his career when he leaves the game in question comes out wack. I don’t see that changing.
Geo Xev nope, not even that. If you read a bit into EA Sports FIFA 18 community general sentiment, everyone is also feeling the decline in polish and quality. Something about bugs and handicaps and lack of improvement. Yeah, they're even fucking up their Golden Egg laying machine. EA is just bad all around. Eventually even EA Sports will have controversy.
Giglioti at this rate I do as well. But let's face it their dedicated BATTLEFIELD FANS will always spend money for EAs wallets to get bigger. EA needs to fucking die. Let's not get started on their racing games and sports games as well.
Peace Keeper Even if we don't buy them though it still doesn't stop them from ruining series and publishing poor quality games. I won't buy anymore of their games. It sucks knowing I'll never get a proper Star Wars Battlefront, Sims game, Need for Speed, Mass Effect, etc. ever again.
Peace Keeper Yeah I see your point but I never mentioned when I stopped buying EA games. It doesn't matter though because I'm done with them. There are so many other great games out there WITHOUT microtransactions. I recently bought Horizon Zero Dawn on sale and I felt bad for buying it at a cheaper price because I liked the game so much.
I can understand Bioware position but when they call out the costumers for being pessimistic about the game, they need to remember two things: their past games and being under EA
Dragon Age 2 was kinda crappy, but at the very least it still had some decent role playing moments and fairly interesting story. Inquisition on the other hand failed in every aspect except maybe graphics which were nice.
eh im a fan of all 3 in the series but i will admit inquistion wasn't the best but it was a good game hopefully ea don't get their grubby hands on it and fuck it up
Napalm Blaziken They want Bioware to return to form. They are angry that Bioware has made a 180° turn and abandoned it's principles that made it successful, and turned to the dark side that is EA.
problem is it's not that Bioware "sold their asses" to EA, but rather EA was (and still is) powerful and rich enough to Buy VG Holding Corp (the OWNER of Bioware and Pandemic) and as such Bioware automatically went to New Management... it's exactly like what Disney just did with FOX, buying alll the subsidiaries with It bundled together with the product spending Big Cash. This makes me feel even worse about Bioware's condition.
Napalm Blaziken I'm pretty sure that EA sabotages their companies in an effort to meld these companies into their own so that they own and get all the revenue from their ips. I would not put it past EA because they are the most scummy company I have ever seen
Andi CRIMSON I believe quite a lot of the purchases that did happen were from either Metal Gear fans unfamiliar with what happened with Kojima (I know quite a few who didn’t know what happened) or people who were willing to give Konami a shot. Also, fans of the Zombie and survival genres. I believe most of the hardcore Metal Gear fan base has left with Kojima though.
I don't think key writers retiring are anything to be surprised at in the Triple A industry, it is one of the most harsh industries after all. But one can't deny that the timing of his departure is rather odd.
Lets just assume that Anthem is going to be absolute shit. That way no one will be disappointed if it really fails and we can only get positively surprised if it doesn't.
I initially hoped Anthem would be “a Destiny game I’d actually be interested in.” A co op shooter with a decent story. After Destiny 2 launched as a threadbare game with heavy emphasis on the Eververse, I wanted to Anthem to dethrone them in the genre. But more and more news about the game is making me nervous. Let’s be honest, it can’t just be an “ok” or “decent” game. If it fails to be amazing, it just fails. There’s no middle ground, not after Andromeda, and not with EA looming overhead with the executioner’s axe. And from all the little bits of news, I fear “adequate” is the best they’ll be able to muster.
Exodus 2017 Mass effect 3 was by all means a great game, it's only the end which ruined it. Which explains a lot considering the person responsible for the first 2 games wasn't the lead writer.
Bioware died halfway through development of Dragon Age 2 when half that team left. It's never been the same since. So i'd say that was when Bioware actually died. This talentless husk made of interns and EA yes-men should've been put down years ago.
The whole Bioware downward spiral is like a slow mo accident happening I just can't look away from...and it's going on for many years now. Hurts my heart to think they where once my favorite game developer and couldn't do wrong in my eyes. So sad! ;_;
So no doubt some story quests will turn out like this I need you to go here and kill some creatures Why? I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain
I think a lot of people share my viewpoint so here you go: I almost never watch your video for the content because I really don't care about gaming news other than actual game releases. I instead watch you videos because of you. Your manner of speech, tone of voice, accent, soothing vibe, well structured script, good editing and more, all make your videos extremely fulfilling to watch. Please continue the amazing work!
Destiny's lead writer left too before the game even came out. I guess without these writer's integrity to make a good strong legacy, the greedy ass publishers can water-down and chop up the content as much as they want.
More like management making the writers compromise the narrative for the sake of Monetization, the writers getting fed up and leaving for new projects. Anthem is dead.
It's EA. Was ANYBODY here who follows YongYea optimistic before this news? Did anyone in here have a reason to think this EA game would be handled any differently than EA has handled their latest offerings? This isn't the nail in the coffin. Those nails were set and have been gathering rust for months.
Yeah, they've had to go back and restructure the entire game because it was going to be just like all the other crap that's been released recently. Once shit started to hit the fan with lootbox based progression and a hate towards them in general, they shit the bed and started scrambling to "fix" their game. Dumpster fires still smell like garbage after you put them out.
something similar happened with the first destiny game it was supposed to have an engrossing narritive but the higher ups rejected it and forced the devolopers to rework it into dlc
Don't worry guys! Our good friend Anita Sarkeesian is following the Anthem project up close and she is super happy to see that the Bioware team is made up of super talented allies. We all know that nothing wrong can happen when Anita gets involved in something =)
So happy you’re reporting on this and recognize how much impact Drew Karpyshen has on Bioware’s games. I haven’t seen any other channel pick it up, thanks for spreading the word 👍🏻
*Wait shit, that's the guy who wrote the good Mass Effect Novels ...then again, people leave (him especially) and he may have already finished his role for Anthem. He should just be a contractor, they can bring him on for a game then he can share his talents with other franchises.
That's what I'm thinking. Writers do the bulk of their work during preproduction. In the last year of a game's development there really isn't much for them to do.
We can at least hope he left after he finished his job. Writers usually finish their part in game development much sooner than let's say programmers or quality testers. Considering Anthem's deadline was pushed back a few months, presumably for ironing out bugs and such, he most likely had nothing left to do on Anthem anyway.
Dude I don't know what I will do if Bioware goes under. I've spent so many years of my life engrossed in their games. I know they are mostly a shell of what they used to be, but I really don't want to see my favorite studio die. I don't give half a fuck about a cash-grab like Anthem I want my old Bioware back.
Bioware is doomed if they stay with EA any longer. I can see EA completely shutting down their studio after Anthem comes out, if not before and cancelling the game altogether. I really hope that another publisher can acquire them before that happens because I don’t want to see one of my all time favourite development studios dying.
Personally, I disagree. I don't think their legacy is *that* tainted just yet. But they're certainly getting there. If they were on the level of Bungie I would agree with you, but I don't think they've gotten that bad yet. If they could escape EA hey might have a chance. A slim one, but still.
They have a contract with EA, they can't go away and no other publisher is going to paid a exorbitant amount of money for a company that has they reputation destroy and the best members of the team are gone.
The positive thing to take away from this: it seems like Disney is now building their own studios with help of their new co-companies to be independent from pure game industry publishers. And it looks like they're accepting just the best, and most experienced people for those studios.
EDIT: Bioware losing Karpyshyn could arguably be seen as the equivalent of Valve losing Laidlaw.

Drew is an exceptional writer. Theirs and our loss.
YongYea everyone is fleeing Bioware because they are fed up at EA.
If Anthem turns out bad, that's it. This could be the end of Bioware as EA might and will close Bioware for good.
YongYea Does this sound like Deja Vu to you?
YongYea yes this is bad. But obviously there's 3 years of work done on Anthem. So I don't see this as that strange. He's a writer, I don't think after all this time that parts of the narrative aren't nailed down. There won't be a reboot this late in the game. Basically, I am still cautiously optimistic and this doesn't change that.
If this game fails I wouldn't be suprised
MR NOT A HERO it will. No doubt
It has EA attached to it, what are the odds...
Have some hope!
But uh... Keep your expectations low, that way if it fails the fall won't hurt so much.
Plus I got a feeling that there will be gear loot boxes or something like & with the whole controversy with the loot boxes I'm sure that won't sit well with consumers.
At this point it's dead-on-arrival. People don't find these pseudo-MMO's appealing anymore after Destiny 2's fuckup. See: all the groans induced the The Division 2's announcement. EA is just shedding parts

It’s slowly becoming like Destiny. Losing its writers.

By azura by azura BY AZURA!
Destiny never had writers.
Well KotOR MMO was great at utilizing Karpyshyn's writing, so I don't think it was a problem, not until he left anyway.
sovieToilet There is no such thing as a KotoR MMO. I think you mean TOR. Comparing/confusing them is an insult to KotoR.
It's great example of how EA ruins everything it's greedy hands touch.
I didn’t pre-order Anthem, I wasn’t hyped for it, I didn’t even look at it. Anything by EA is a death trap laced with mercury and cyanide.
Hyper Sonic People who pre order before a release date and after barely 10 mins of gameplay... Hahaha
im not gonna lie, although i didn't preorder, i was pretty hyped for this regardless of EA. im a sucker for open world games, but the more news i hear anything about EA, the more reasons why im glad i didn't buy into the hype early on
Stephen Stine
"i was pretty hyped"
"im glad i didn't buy into the hype"
Pick one
Rodney Jones, im glad i didn't preorder or will preorder when it will become available BECAUSE of the hype - so i pick both
Well that’s not fucking good.
HELL NO, I'd watch them burn for what they did to Knights of the Old repunlic with that sad excuse for an mmo.
I think you spelled Andromeda wrong
Bio ware is a shell or should I say a husk of their former selves.
There's still the da4 they're gonna work on
And I'm just sitting here waiting for kotor3 :S
Giggling Stoner You're gonna be waiting a very long time for that
it's an EA game so I'm not even surprise
Sure EA is shit, but Bioware under their supervision is what you should be concerned about, regardless if it surprises you or not, the poor people in Bioware are truly suffering
Dry Mass sooo like practically every other studio under EA lol they were as good as dead from day one.
Pie Eyed-Piper
Yup, and i fucking hope Respawn delivers their usually quality instead of completely selling their souls to E fuckin A
Dry Mass dude they had no other choice. EA fucking murdered their profits by placing Titanfall 2's release date between IW and BF1.
Oh, and make sure he reminds them of the online store where they can get our new single use weapons for only 5.99 each..."
when your boss reads memes off facebook and thinks the number of likes and laughs and popularity equates good story
This pisses me off because it's dead fucking true. Bunch of psychopaths
😂
Spot on!
I can see this happening. The guy is an awesome storyteller, but EA has no need for compelling stories, they just want to give the players a reason to shoot shit.
Bioware loses its best writer = Bungie lost its best writer.
Anthem = Destiny
Can't wait for a fulfilling story with an actual premise and meaning behind it, it's going to be grea-
Oh.
They're jumping ship, because anyone who isn't blind can see that Anthem isn't going to do well in the eyes of EA, no matter the number of copies sold.
HelloChief117 also since Anita had her greedy little grabbers in it :P
R.I.P Bioware, It was nice knowing ya....
Bioware is dead since Dragon Age II though
No, that was when it was in a coma. ME: Andromeda is when they pulled the life support
To be honest, they brought this upon themselves. They were not forced to sell to EA. They were not forced to copy the "success" of Destiny. They were not forced to inject social justice politics into their games... at least they weren't until they invited Anita Sarkeesian.
Fair enough
Phataku Well, they are being forced to copy Destiny's success (fucking EA). Other points spot on though.
Well Bioware thought it was a lucrative decision to sell out to EA. They made the bed, time to sleep in it.
It's why I feel littl sympathy for any developer that willingly goes with EA like Respawn
Let's be honest, they probably didn't expect this as the future of EA when they signed.
Let's be honest......... Fuck Bioware.
AnotherKS
They should have though. EA had closed down at least 3 companies before their signing.
Forever
“I could tell you about what happened.....but we ran out of writers.”
Shame. But this game probably wasn't going to be about story anyway. All about that loot grind with an item gambling option.
Just like Destiny ^^
They flat out said this wasn't going to be a story driven game at the start. Something along the lines of 'it doesn't matter why the world in anthem is the way it is. It just is.' I'd have to google it for the exact quote
Bye-oware
LKDesign
Bio-where?
Just like how we blame directors but really its the producers and studio heads (& investors) who are really pulling the strings...Devs / Directors will take the blame and can't talk back because they'll be persecuted by the industry.
Sad world.....
Beware
Buy-o-beware
LKDesign lol good one
(Insert "This is fine" meme)
Why did people even have hope? This is EA now, everything they touch goes to shit one way or another.
john william I think you mean gold
They're like King Midas in reverse.
Tekunin Megpoid No they’re exactly like king Midas :)
meh the game died way before this anyway
katsupoi
I wouldn’t say that. It was just being worried about, and had gotten people paranoid.
The obsession for the 4k is a big problem. Andromeda was fill with desertic et nordic scenery for this reason. And on a console, i as a programmer a do not think the final product have a chance to resemble the advertising.
And i have forgot the visit of the studio by anita sarkeesian. For me, it's pretty much a kiss of death.
katsupoi when anita visited
Omega Man
How someone visiting would announce the death of the game ?
merithes clearly you dont understand the damage she has caused in the past XD anthem is dead and will be a flop
Having optimism about a game EA has any involvement in must be some kind of mental illiness.
I agree with the comparison between Karpyshyn and Laidlaw... It seems story driven games are dying and being replaced with loot boxes ridden multi-player games.
Nope. Plenty of single player video games still coming out.
Simte which is why Sony needs respect for keeping them alive with their exclusives line up
TheGamerTronShow only by a couple of AAA & the rest are Indies.
The people:How dare you stand where he stood.
SeboTrzyDe3D yeah, let's fire just fire over 1000 Bioware employees, because why not? Right?
Yep Dragon Age II was my WTF Bioware moment...and Andromeda was the point where I said enough is enough and Bioware/EA (especially EA) will never see another dime.
Han Solo Yes. Bioware is dead and those employees talent and skills will be much better used in studios that actually give a shit about creating a good game.
What happens to Bioware is not our problem.
They've made terrible games since Dragon Age 2.
That means they've had a decade to find new jobs.
"I made Dragon Age Origins" should have been enough for them to land virtually anywhere.
So many red flags.....
It's like May-day at the Kremlin in the 1980's before the Soviet-Union fell...
Rats always desert a sinking ship. It’s a good idea to follow.
The idea that the person that you had a happy conversation with could be the same person you could have a flame war with if you got off on the wrong foot..
mega sean where do they flee to fam, dem rats can't swim
It could be more mundane. In the modern business environment, the biggest raises are gained by jumping to a new company. It could be less about rats leaving a sinking ship, and more a company not reinforcing their own worn out foundation.
So does the *actual* talent. It is easy to get them confused.
rats swim perfectly
Bioware loses best writer?
In the words of Doc Rivers to Rajon Rondo " Get Out While You Still Can"
Well, there goes any dwindling hope I had... When is Cyberpunk 2077 coming out again?
Baconman 187 in 2077 unfortunately :/
By my best prediction Either fall of 2019 or 2020.
"when it's ready", which is how it's supposed to be.
their twitter channel came up again and they are showing at E3 this year. I could only imagine that its an announcement that will be huge.
Nah who need a sense of pride and accomplishment when you have shit tons of money.
pride, ambitions, desires, accomplishment, media hype, honor, to EA and bioware these can be sold
For the first time I am not excited about e3 because I am sure that whatever fancy trailers they show its just gonna be " how are they going to fuck this up with lootboxes and microtransactions"
I am calling it now 98 percent of games shown at E3 are gonna be live service crap and battle royale
I'm excited to see what nintendo have to present at E3
Maybe a new cardboard game
I'm done typing. kthxbai.
If Metro Exodus has any new trailers or anything I'll be looking forward to it.
I hope Obsidian make a true KOTOR sequel. I have lost all faith in Bioware.
Drew is one of the industries best wish him the best.
The Spoony Bard Eh hes Sam Maggs bitch now Hes a shell of himself
Konami, Bioware, EA, they're not the same companies they were a decade and a half ago.
Alex FRD They have been consumed by greed and pride. They are now a shadow of their former selfs.Best option now is to ignore them and they will Fall.
Don't forget Bungie too. :(
And while it's not really that much like these game publishers, rip Mojang.
Konami was always crappy though. They were just lucky that they had good developers working under them.
Well EA was like that even 2 decades ago.
Ea has been like this since late 90s early 20s.
Do NOT PRE-ORDER
Pre-ordering it. After Mass Effect Andromeda was pretty okay for a game despite the crybaby click bait that happened from youtubers, I've figured 90% of what people like Yongyea say is just bullshit they say that they think their fans will like in order to get the most clicks.
It looks fun, it's by a studio that usually does shit right, and ME3 was fairly enjoyable too. So why not pre-order it if I feel like it? Its assuredly going to be worth the purchase price, and frankly, fuck off to anyone saying not to do so :D
Why are you even watching his videos? Are you just here so you can whine about his opinion?
Never pre order anything. Its just a dumb idea.
Do not pre order games period. Wait to see what you are buying.
Anthem didn't die!
IT WAS MURDERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see cleanprincegaming I like
How do you kill that which has no life?
Essay intensifies
By EA. Essay by tyler j.
32 Threads Wrong video, mate
Probably got tired of seeing Anita sarkeesean everyday at work
TheR1chman Hes actually a feminist supporter hes constantly re tweeting sam maggs ya know that chick from bioware who claimed to be "virtually raped" in gta 5 this guys a shell of himself who cares
Anita S. Is toxic
Nailed it 👏
I want Antham to be bad. It'll be what they deserve, for abandoning their single player RPG roots and trying to make a Destiny clone.
EA probably forced them into it
As bad as it is, for everyone to see a product fail.
David B oh they will fail.
Anthem died before it was born 🤯
Nice job EA.😒
Sownheard Anthem is the ovum that died during menstruation
Bioware. What are you doing?
More like what is EA doing to Bioware.
The usual. Having a knife in it's back being twisted by EA.
Bioware can't say no to EA. EA owns them. Thus EA is the boss.
Vidya Bros.
Killing itself before EA can do the honors.
stevensays1 This is one of those rate times i will actually defend EA and say that it wasn't their fault. It's mostly retardness and stupid decisions Bioware themselves made over the years that lead them to where they are today.
R.I.P Bioware. You were the best before selling your soul to the devil.
i think it will be that last time ea will buy a new studio. we know better than sale us to the devil now
Well when bioware inevitably goes to the chopping block, I'm going to try to remember bioware for how it used to be before the dark times. Rest In peace bioware, you have brought a lot of joy and a lot of disappointment.
dont worry they can replace it with some SWJ writer from the ex-andromeda team
i wouldn't be surprised if that would happen, sad to see my favourite studio dying
*_tO WhO aNd yoUR gOddAmN FaTHeR_*
whom* (sorry, my face still hurts)
Andi CRIMSON he means SWJ not SJW.
atleast they dont have to worry about facial animations cause they are all suited up 😀
Let them fall they must suffer for their sins against the gamer community
Pardon my bluntness, but what kind ignoramus lets a talent of Karpyshyn's caliber leave during such a critical juncture ? Its bad PR and its bad for the final quality of the game.
KaiserAfini they can’t really lock him inside the building...
The same type that fucks Kojima over in the middle of a 5 year development cycle.
GzAshes But they can give him more creative control, perks, etc. He has a track record to justify it and is key to win this all or nothing launch.
What are you going to do, shackle him to a radiator? lol
KaiserAfini Yeah those fucks. Give him a raise, and big bonus so he has a reason to stay.
Alibaba the truth hurts
at least they can be pushed away and banished to sport games and pachinko machines so no new evil can step into the power vaccum
Alibaba
They already have gamble slot machines build-in certain IP's.
When you use that as a core game mechanic you've abandoned prior ways of making a quality game.
Tru but its really said cause bioware is likely gonna work there ass off on this game but cause of EA hate the devs work will go to waste
I agree it isn't the same studio - are there even any old-timers left there?
Either u die as a hero or live long enough to become villian. Its so true
Actually the studio that made Dragon Age and Mass Effect trilogy were long gone.
I really want every EA title to do horribly bad
They are the grim reaper of videogame companies. I think if what you say does happen EA would just make sport titles forever.
Eventually even EA Sports will have controversy.
yup and they earnd all of it
Giglioti at this rate I do as well. But let's face it their dedicated BATTLEFIELD FANS will always spend money for EAs wallets to get bigger. EA needs to fucking die. Let's not get started on their racing games and sports games as well.
not only battlefield, fifa in europe and that hockey shit in usa, let's not forget The Scam 4 with their infinity dlc
Please gamers don’t buy this game
Please don’t support EA
Let this game fail
Don’t support any EA games
Nintendo should make a new Mario strikers to replace Fifa and PlayStation to some how replace Madden
I no longer buy anything connected to Sony or EA.
Miles Moore no don’t let EA do that to you
Idc if it’s a good game
It’s EA the devil
AssLess Gaming That’s not how it works.
Tealwraith What's wrong with Sony? They make great games.
I want everyone to stop buying EA products.
KUGAN VASUDEVAN understood
Yep no problem from me
I'm in on that idea. They have screwed us over one too many times. So many of my favorite series have been ruined by EA. All because of their greed.
Another Red Flag raised.
I can understand Bioware position but when they call out the costumers for being pessimistic about the game, they need to remember two things: their past games and being under EA
being a live service game from one of the worst publisher in the industry... yeah, this game is gonna suck big time... just another destiny crap
Nope too many red flags I'm out.
same i wont consider getting it at all till its like 20 dollars max
Please let Anthem fail massively.
SilkMilkJilk I'm pretty sure it's going to fail at least up to EA expectations.
Brilliant 😆
DragonInferno99 Ω why the fuck do you want it to fail?
Replace Anthem with EA please.
Loved your comment mate! 🤣
Bioware died after ME3. Heck, even Dragon Age hasn't been good since Origins, their first one!
Dragon Age 2 was kinda crappy, but at the very least it still had some decent role playing moments and fairly interesting story. Inquisition on the other hand failed in every aspect except maybe graphics which were nice.
eh im a fan of all 3 in the series but i will admit inquistion wasn't the best but it was a good game
hopefully ea don't get their grubby hands on it and fuck it up
Bioware died after DA2
Considering the comments on the Andromeda videos, I would be surprised if people were sad to see BioWare go. Seems to me like they WANT it to go.
Andi CRIMSON since when did people “accept” MGS, pretty sure it sold abysmally
Andi CRIMSON I believe quite a lot of the purchases that did happen were from either Metal Gear fans unfamiliar with what happened with Kojima (I know quite a few who didn’t know what happened) or people who were willing to give Konami a shot.
Also, fans of the Zombie and survival genres. I believe most of the hardcore Metal Gear fan base has left with Kojima though.
This is such a trainwreck and it's not even out
I don't think key writers retiring are anything to be surprised at in the Triple A industry, it is one of the most harsh industries after all.
Bioware haven’t made a good game since Mass Effect 2 and this Anthem will be their last one before EA “restructures” them.
I liked ME3 although I felt it was the weakest of the franchise.
Exodus 2017 Mass effect 3 was by all means a great game, it's only the end which ruined it. Which explains a lot considering the person responsible for the first 2 games wasn't the lead writer.
Pt_Lacky I know I didn't think the ending was that bad. But I do understand that it is the weakest
Bioware died halfway through development of Dragon Age 2 when half that team left.
It's never been the same since. So i'd say that was when Bioware actually died.
This talentless husk made of interns and EA yes-men should've been put down years ago.
Husk =P
dead by arrival
Dead while in transit.
The whole Bioware downward spiral is like a slow mo accident happening I just can't look away from...and it's going on for many years now. Hurts my heart to think they where once my favorite game developer and couldn't do wrong in my eyes. So sad! ;_;
So no doubt some story quests will turn out like this
I need you to go here and kill some creatures
Why?
I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain
Pretty much this. The side quest will just consider of boring fetch quest and kill task with no context whatsoever
EA is more of a reaper than a devil
Reaper, you say?
"You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it" - EA to BioWare.
LegendaryController1 This comment is golden!
Man, I remember reading Drew's Mass Effect books and they were fantastic books
WTF well this game is dead
TheGameRage1 miscarriage
I think a lot of people share my viewpoint so here you go: I almost never watch your video for the content because I really don't care about gaming news other than actual game releases. I instead watch you videos because of you. Your manner of speech, tone of voice, accent, soothing vibe, well structured script, good editing and more, all make your videos extremely fulfilling to watch. Please continue the amazing work!
Losing a top dev in the middle of development. Sinking ship anyone?
The ship already reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
The nails were in with ME3 as far as I am concerned.
I'm not even surprised.
What’s next, it’s lead composer will be fired before the game comes out?
Just One Guy say no more
just stumbled onto your site, and really liked your presentation. Very informative. Subbed :) cheers from Australia
Don't care. Anthem is the reason Mass Effect died. Wasn't going to bother buy this shit on principal alone.
SirKnasher
Well to be honest, Mass Effect was already brutally murdered by 3's ending.
they at least still had characters that i grew to love(Tali OMG). the only thing that bothered me was you could not romance Dr. Karin Chakwas :(
Gaymen Laymen beat ya to it, Yoooooong!
Anthem’s development is sounding worse than Andromeda’s now...what happened Bioware, what happened...oh wait EA
something similar happened with the first destiny game it was supposed to have an engrossing narritive but the higher ups rejected it and forced the devolopers to rework it into dlc
Activision suck too...
Ty for the content and another update on this situation 👍🏼
The sarkeesian effect.
Don't worry guys!
Our good friend Anita Sarkeesian is following the Anthem project up close and she is super happy to see that the Bioware team is made up of super talented allies.
We all know that nothing wrong can happen when Anita gets involved in something =)
T Bago I mean I’d like to know the game isn’t made by bigots like you.
That was a microaggression!
You're so intolerant.
I'm sad for you.
xoxo ;)
R.I.P This is Andromeda all over again, all the talent is bailing so they won't get stuck with garbage on their resumes..
I hope this game fails, Anita Sarceesian had her hands in this, Anthem is poison now.
Personally... i hope Anthem fooking fails.
RFA/The-DuDe It probably will, I think we've seen nothing more than bad PR since it was announced pretty much
indeed, and lets be honest, Bioware was already dead since ME3, So we (the gamers) will be losing nothing.
RFA/The-DuDe only idiots and casuals will lose lmao
Heh, good i'm not a casual gamer then eh ?....;)
Joseph Staten leaving Bungie all over again.
Good luck Drew in your future endeavors. You have helped create some of the greatest games I've played in the last 20 years. All the best :)
9:54 video length. Your integrity knows no bounds, YongYea.
Good day sir, you are a gentleman & a scholar.
We can at least hope he left after he finished his job. Writers usually finish their part in game development much sooner than let's say programmers or quality testers. Considering Anthem's deadline was pushed back a few months, presumably for ironing out bugs and such, he most likely had nothing left to do on Anthem anyway.
Good news!
Watching ! How?
There can only be one
Hades Subordinate Function couldn’t have said it better myself.
Miles Moore I don't know about ya but, I don't like shit games to succeed
cough...destiny...cough...most sports game...cough...
The game isn’t already written?
Dude I don't know what I will do if Bioware goes under. I've spent so many years of my life engrossed in their games. I know they are mostly a shell of what they used to be, but I really don't want to see my favorite studio die. I don't give half a fuck about a cash-grab like Anthem I want my old Bioware back.
Well, this has happened before. It’s a repeating EA cycle: Origin, Bullfrog, Westwood, Mythic, Pandamic.
DragonInferno99 Ω Hah, inb4 EA acquires CD PROJEKT RED after CP2077 releases.
So when do you think these guys get going to team up and start another studio?
Bioware is doomed if they stay with EA any longer. I can see EA completely shutting down their studio after Anthem comes out, if not before and cancelling the game altogether. I really hope that another publisher can acquire them before that happens because I don’t want to see one of my all time favourite development studios dying.
GiLLyeXp
You dont know how this works do you
landen scott Enlighten me then, Mr Developer.
James Black
Their best people had already left anyway.
Well my Anthem Hype is Officially Deflated...
this game was doomed since star wars
The positive thing to take away from this: it seems like Disney is now building their own studios with help of their new co-companies to be independent from pure game industry publishers. And it looks like they're accepting just the best, and most experienced people for those studios.
I don't ever intend to buy this game. Completely done with EA, Bioware as long as they are under them as well.
