I always enjoy your reviews. I don’t know how I would switch out 59 pairs of boots 🤣. I actually got my first pair of IR amber today. I’m glad I was fit in the redwing store. They had a double braneck. I know I spelled it wrong. In any event, I went with an 11 1/2 D. My right foot is slightly longer. Also my toes are weird, and my two middle toes are longer than my big toe. I guess I measured 12, but sized down a half size. I tried on the E width, which felt a bit loose. I wore them out of the store, and they weren’t horrible as many people complain about. I know they need to break in, but I have worn work boots daily for years. I think some people are not used to boots. I also wear compression socks, and they are thin. I don’t usually lace up to the top hook on my 8” boots. I wore them out of the store, and drove for about an hour, with no complaints. Since you obviously have history, do you usually lace your boots up to the top hook? Thanks again for the knowledge and entertaining videos.

    Very good video, CJ! Congrats.
There is a lot of myth and crazy rules about sizing Red Wing boots. The gentleman who assists CJ at the Red Wing store (wonderful place I had the pleasure of visiting) says what I consider key to reaching the ideal size: your toes should not touch the front of your boot, even slightly. . On long walks this can result in a world of pain. Thus, in my experience the most reliable measure is the Japanese in cm that appears inside the boot. After all, no boots will stretch lengthwise. My feet measure 27.5 cm, so all my 7 pairs are 9.5. Of course, my foot is narrow. But Red Wing boots can be purchased in different widths. The ideal is to try it in a store, but if not possible, follow the Japanese measure. Take care!

    • @jarmen13
      @jarmen13 4 года назад

I followed the Japanese measurement on my other shoes too. My red wing size 7 (25cm) perfectly fits on me. I also have chucks in size 8, so just size down to 7 for red wing for another comparison.

I measure 10 on the Brannock. I wear 9 in Iron Ranger and Moc toe. The Moc toe was snug but eventually broke in. I had trouble with the work Chukka, though. A 9.5 was painfully narrow and tight. Finally I gave them a warm water soak and put them on. They now fit perfectly. I wouldn't hesitate to soak a Red Wing that just won't break in. Condition them afterwards.

I thought I'd put in my two cents. I went to my local redwing store and I got digitally scanned. My left foot measured 10.2 and right foot measured exactly 10 with my feet having a "C" width. Redwing says to purchase a half size down but I had to go a full size down. I believe because I had narrow feet I had to go a full size down. And let me tell u they fit absolutely perfect. Had I had regular "D" width feet I think I would be just fine buying a half size down. My blacksmiths and my IR's are a size 9. Now here's another thing. My moc toes 9075's are 9.5 so the shoe sizes are definitely all over the place. I guess the shoe lasts make a huge difference. Hope this helps.

Chris C ... as I tried lots of red wings too, the most disappointing fact is, that two pairs of the same boots can have totally different width and fit if they are from a different worker or batch. I tried loggers from two different sources at the same time and if I wanted to have one good pair I would have to mix both pairs. at one pair the left foot was fitting and from the other pair, the right. but at the right foot the heel was shaped badly. so try from different sources or try a second pair or a different color to get a good fit.

Im a true size 10.5 ee. I went in to a redwing store today and got measured.
Ive owned many redwing boots. In this style I tried a 10 all the way down to a 8.5 ee and the heel fit was surprisingly perfect in all sizes which is a key factor in a good fitting boot. Since they felt great in the heel I almost bought the size 9.5 but I started to think about how much space there was in the toe box, particularly the space between my longest toe in relation to when it would touch the front.
Size 8.5 put my toes closer together but since im a ee I would have probably been fine, but I didnt want to risk it.
I probably would have been fine even in a 10.5, but then I would have had two inches of space if not more left over.
Maybe thats why they say they look like clown shoes. 🤨
Size 9 ee put my toes about 1 fingers width away from reaching the tip of the shoe in the toe box. Size 9 ee is my size in Iron Rangers.
I would suggest you try smaller sizes than you are used to in this style. Once you wear the heritage series outside, redwing will not let you exchange them for a smaller size.
    Hope this helps.

My experience was different. On the Brannock device, my foot length was 9, but my instep was 10 (Brannock recommends taking the larger of the two measurements). Width was squarely between a D and E. Because they didn’t have wide widths in the style I wanted, I ended up in a size 9.5 D in both I.R. and Beckman. Both fit well.

I am a 10.5 EE on sneakers, Red Wing measured me on a 9EE. I bought the Rovers Rough and Tough on a 9D, since it doesn't come wide. I tried the 9.5D since 9D was TIGHT, but the ball area, in front of the arch, was not aligned with the boot properly and the boot was loose on the back when properly sitting the ball in the boot. There were hot spots when breaking the boots-- which was expected since I am wide and they are new, but never got blisters on my feet. The first day was kinda rough, second day was much better, now they fit like a comfortable glove with plenty of wiggle room on the toes. You can break them in slowly, or wear them on days you won't be doing a whole lot of heavy walking. If you struggle getting the boot in, get a shoe horn, makes everything significantly easier and won't struggle getting new boots in.

I measure a 10.5 on the Brannock, and I size down to a 10D and they fit fine in the 8 last. The width is just right and I have a half a thumbnail in length. I hope I didn't f up and waste a bunch of money. I bought the IR copper in an 8.5. The salesperson talked me into it without measuring on the brannock. I wear 10s in most Nikes and 9s in chuck taylors. I read online, and the salesgirl told me that it should be tight. I haven't worn them a ton, but knew that I wanted to also get them in black during their black Friday sale. It was a zoo in there during the sale, but the salesperson that day measured me on the brannock, but just for length. He didn't do the width or the ball or big toe knuckle assessment. This was at 8 a.m., and I was a 9.5 on the brannock. Been trying to break the blacks in lately, and notice that the squeeze I'm getting on the pinky toes are a bit uncomfortable and possibly too tight. I've never had to break boots in before, so I don't know. I've only worn them for 8 hours twice, and a few hours on three or four more occasions. So I'm sure they're far from being broken in. I think I tried the 9's in the copper, and the salesgirl that helped me thought there was too much space in the material above the foot(between the laces and toe cap), as if my foot wasn't thick enough to fill it in. Obviously it's too late now to exchange for the 9s because of their policy. Will the squeezing on the pinky toes loosen up after more wear? I need to wear both the copper and the blacks more. Would be a damn shame if over $600 worth of boots end up being a waste.

I hope you’re right because I feel the squeeze. It’s not overly painful, but definitely uncomfortable. I also feel some pain in the foot, like the foot is being squeezed so much that the bones are being compressed. Hopefully it expands with time. Seems like most forums say boots won’t expand too much, and if it’s hurting from the squeeze/tightness, it’s not a good sign.

CJ Cook went on a four mile hike over rocky terrain and some decent elevation. The feet are destroyed, especially at the pinky toes. I don’t think my feet are overly wide. Like I said, I measured a 9.5 on the brannock on an early morning measure. They only did one foot, so I suppose it’s possible the other foot is slightly larger. A lot of threads suggest a cobbler can stretch it out. Just bummed that I dropped so much dough, and might have to spend more with no guarantees of them being an enjoyable fit. Did you or do you deal with a devastating break in whenever you break in a new pair of 8.5s?

    Question for CJ:
I normally buy a size 10 for almost all shoes and boots. Bear in mind, this is for a wide variety of shoe styles, buying comparatively inexpensive shoes and selecting them self-serve off the shelves with no formal measuring. I've always felt like I have a "medium" foot, subjectively, but my pinky toes often bulge the side of the shoe out. I sometimes wonder if I might actually be "wide". Most of the shoes I've had that feel comfortable, end up having a wee bit of extra room in the end of the shoe, past the toes. I'm considering ordering the Roughneck boots with moc toe and vibram sole. I don't use my boots for occupation, but do a wide variety of DIY carpentry, landscape work, hiking around with dogs, etc.
With the stores here in Michigan closed due to Covid-19 rules, what size do you think I should order considering I don't have the option of getting properly fitted, and I am ready to order my first premium boots, and don't think I have the patience to keep waiting for things to open up?

Normally I wear size 11 Converse and the the store clerk recommend me size 10.5. I tried them and they felt a little bit tight on the ball of my feet. So I went for size 11 instead and they're perfect fit and still have about 1 inch extra space in the toe rooms. Now I grow to really love my IR.

@@CJCook I am wondering if UK size is the correct size with Redwing. I got a pair of Iron Rangers size 8.5 and they fit perfect. They are the same length as all my boots and shoes in 8.5's. No matter what make. I think the sizes translated in Redwing boots is out. I purchased a pair of Blacksmith boots, 8.5's and they fit perfect as well. It states 9.5 US on the label, or a 8.5. And 27.5cm. But on Redwing size chart 27.5cm = size 10.5. A UK 8.5 =size 9 in US sizes. So all I do know is measure the boot, and all of my boots and shoes with leather welted soles measure 30.5 to 31cm, depending on the overlap of the sole from front of shoe or boot. My foot measures 11". And on Rose anvil RUclips channel he says that is a 10.5! The mind boggles! And you was told to try on a 7.5 at the Redwing store to start of with. i just purchased the Blacksmith boots, and wish i could get some of the moc toe styles, but not many stores have Redwing. @TomUK7 8 месяцев назад +2

The leather of Redwing boots is extremely thick and rigid. It can be extremely off putting if you haven't been through the process of breaking them in before. As you wear them the heat from your feet and movement from walking stretches, softens and moulds the leather to your feet. This is why they should feel almost uncomfortably tight to begin with. The opposite is also true and you end up with a boot that not only fits too big but looks oversize. The sales staff are there to guide people through this process. Otherwise people are dropping £300 of their hard earned cash on something that isn't quite right. At that price it has to be spot on.👌
