I wish you could have experienced Crouch End as it was when I was growing up (vintage 1947). It was even more like a village and wonderful. Thanks for your take on it Philip!
I made a strange almost concerning pilgrimage to crouch end yesterday. I've just suffered a close bereavement so it's a strange time. I'm a musician and about a year ago I rediscovered the 80s duo Eurithmics. They were big in my younger days but I was never into them as such. I read about them, listened to it all and my mind and heart exploded with a sudden and huge appreciation of those people, what they experienced, and achieved ....... In Crouch End. I stood outside The Church recording studio and imagined, went into 28 the Broadway, House of Books, and checked with the manager, yea, this was where the flat was upstairs. I went into the Railway Arms and had a chat with the lovely bar staffer who had no idea of the weird and poignant sense of curiosity being fulfilled inside of me. I went in the Queen's pub and imagined it full of my contemporaries when young. I was like being inside someone else's memories. Fans can't meet stars, it doesn't work, but I could do this.. Crouch End: place of dreams.

Er no it’s New York
North London always felt like the proper part of London to live in and I say this as a lifelong South Londoner.
