    When my daughter was 15, she was miffed because ‘everyone’ flew somewhere for spring break except us who ‘couldn’t afford it’. When she was in grade 12, she asked us exactly how much we have saved for university. Her mouth dropped when there’s enough so that she won’t need a student loan. She told us that some other kids were told by their parents that they have zero money for post education. These are the same parents that flew to Mexico every year. Now she is moved out and attending university, every day she is so grateful and hard working and is learning to be financially independent.

      Hard to value one experience over the other. How did those trips to Mexico effect those individuals without tuition money's lives? Are they all in a worse financial situation now?

      @L Kam Thats great.... But one thing i learned in the financial world..In most cases, your kids have far more time on this planet than you do...There is nothing wrong with them taking on a bit of a loan and learning the value of responsibility with that decision. I did.. but also got a little bit of help... Builds character rather than a hand out on top of the fact you had to put yourselves on the back burner to pay for it all... Your going to die one day ...Enjoy some of them.

    • @lkam8541
      @lkam8541 3 года назад +1

      @@MG-og5gf It has impacted these kids’ futures because none of them attended post secondary education. They now feel stuck waiting tables and scraping by. Whereas my daughter is looking forward to a career in the medical field and financial independence.

    • @MG-og5gf
      @MG-og5gf 3 года назад +2

      @@lkam8541 well that's great then. Happy for your family that your financial planning has created a bright future.
      I didn't have that opportunity, but I did have the chance to budget travel, meet great people, and serve(wait tables) at restaurants across Canada, like Jasper, AB. Experience is invaluable.
      Although I hope to create a similar future, as you have for your daughter, for my 6 yr old lil girl by putting educational funds aside. Didn't mean to offend, just looking at it from different angles.

    My parents came to this country with just the clothes off their back, not speaking English, worked at menial jobs but they managed to put a roof over my family’s heads and saved money. They worked hard and were frugal for certain things but super generous when needed. They instilled their work ethics to their children and many of the points you spoke of. You are correct, it starts with parents. I’m now teaching my child.

    GREAT VIDEO!!!
    Financial literacy is so important to learn from a young age.
    My lessons were "There's need to have and nice to have"
    My "allowance" was earned by doing chores around the house for $1/Hr.
    I had to save up to buy my first stereo which took for-ever, but so worth it for the lessons.
    Starting in university, (studying accounting) I kept a financial ledger and I still do everyday, before I even get out of bed, so I know my net worth, to the penny, every day.
    I am 57 and I am retired. BOOM!

    I am a father and I have opened a TFSA account for my daughter when she became 18 to invest in stocks and ETF. I made a bad example though in the first year of buying Suncor and it dropped almost 60% last year but I held on to it and up to today it still drop like 23% wow but I will keep it until at least breakeven. This year I bought index ETF like VUN, VCN and they all made money. Not bad and I think it's important to let your kids know the importance of investing and growing your money.

    • @khuo0219
      @khuo0219 3 года назад

      Good for you for investing with your child. But sometimes you just have to cut your losses on investments. You are anchoring on a sunk cost - what you paid for it is irrelevant, you should only evaluate investment on what it is going to be. In my opinion, both vun and vcn will do better than SU in the future.

    • @paull7937
      @paull7937 3 года назад

      @@khuo0219 I think the oil price will go up with the economy slowly opening up and same with the energy companies like Suncor. Also, since it is a TFSA account there is no loss claim to compensate for any gain. So I think holding and waiting for a bounce back may have a higher return than the index ETF.

So it's so cool now that I get to be in a position where I can learn all of this valuable information and then bring that to them so they can learn too. Not too long ago I sat down with my mother to explain what a TFSA was and it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I even played her YOUR video on the subject to help reinforce it! I *loved* this video! This is by far my most favourite video of everything you have put out. How lucky are you boys to have a father like Marc. The financial education that he gave you is so incredibly valuable. One thing that struck me is when Brandon and Jesse spoke about moving out and having to learn how to pay rent, budgeting and that heat and water are not included in rent. These are the types of things that should be taught in school and it is a big fail on our education system. The cycle of poverty continues because of financial illiteracy and is passed down from generation to generation. Sitting down with your kids and showing them how to do taxes, as grueling as that task can be, is just so important. The love, respect and pride that all of you show to each other is so special to see. Thanks for sharing.
    Happy Fathers Day 2022.....

    Great video and some really sound, old school advice. Would have loved to see some of the golf on that course. I was there many years ago to Powell River, gorgeous place. I started my daughter’s allowance when she was around 4. We would go to the store together and it was meant to spend but she always ended up getting me to pay and she saved her money, smart kid. I also took her to work on weekends and she helped me file at the office. We started by negotiating the price but she always would try to change the work a bit to get more money, that’s when I knew there was no stopping her, lol.

    We wanted to set up a trading account for our children or even purchase stock/ETFs for them. Then transfer it to them under their name once they are older. Would you be able to go over options or processes to do this? Via Questrade or self-directed account? We've been teaching our children about investing, and I even show them my portfolio and they are keen to start, even at 8 years old. They are showing a lot of excitement in elementary class when they are talking about money and value.

    Excellent presentation, I which I learnt this when I started working. I didn’t get going until I was 30. My up bringing was great but did here a lot of worries about money. Being a kid that did not like noise and confrontation I discounted money and enjoyed every penny. Later in life I knew it was important to save money.

    2 things in this video that are amazing.
    1) How amazing that family financial structure is (I'm sure there were struggles and strife) but the knowledge of the captian definitely filtered down to both sons and the ability to speak on money SHINES THRU AND BLOWS YOUR HEAD OFF!
    2) that mirror in the background is DEFINITELY HUNG STRAIGHT lol or the whiskey and scotch bar has all the full Heavy bottle's on one side hahaha
    Thank you guys for the amazing work and content please don't ever change ALOT OF CLUTTER AND "GARBAGE" on RUclips financials but the slow, steady knowledgeable information is amazing. Compared to a golf game keeping the ball straight down the fairway and lay up to the green and read the green and lay properly to put in on par or better.

    That was such a cute video! And I loved all the tips on financial ed to pass on to kids. I have 3 kids, and my parents always told me "that's not your problem" when I was asking them how much they were making or what the mortgage cost...so, zero financial ed from my parents. I will most definitely do the journaling and 4 quarters game with my kiddos. I think it would set them up from a great start to manage money themselves, so in addition to the RESP, they should be all set when they turn "fly out of the nest" age.

    What a great video! I just signed up with the academy about a month ago and now have my 16 year old working through the videos as well. Great inter-generational stuff! Great to see Jesse also and seeing him follow his own path. Shout out from Kingston, Jesse! Thanks for setting us up getting started with Beavis Investing. And thanks to Marc & Brandon for sharing your financial knowledge! Way to go Beavis men!

      Thanks for your comment! Really happy to hear that you're working through the Academy material with your daughter... as you can tell from this video, we share the same beliefs regarding teaching the next generation! And for you, especially because you actually talked with Jesse, you must have felt more connected to this video! 👍 Thanks again for your support and for passing the info along! - Marc

    I absolutely love these tips. Unfortunately my brother and me had to learn these things on our own. Speaking of moving out early, I absolutely recommend it!
    My brother and me moved out when we were 19/20 during university. We actually made a presentation to our parents 😂 highlighting the numbers and the benefit of living closer to school.

    This is an awesome, wholesome video. . I have 2 young boys (age 3; age 1) that I hope to provide at a young age the important lessons of handling/managing money. I didn’t have the role models in my life to show me the path. I learned from watching others do the WRONG thing, and making a conscious effort in not repeating those mistakes. Marc, you spent quality time with your kids, while teaching them the importance of understanding the value of money, and it has served your family well. I can only hope that I have the same impact on my two boys.

    I'm teaching my nieces about money and this video is a great source of ideas. Plus, you are right that I must involve them in choosing what stocks to buy rather than doing everything myself. Thanks for your great videos (I also love the retirement series).

    Haha totally reminded me of my dad. Still to this day has his 1999 chevy lumina. I always laugh thinking about how it's almost as old as I am ('97) and he took really good care of it maintaining it and it's still up and running haha definitely got his dollar's worth. To be fair my parents also own another vehicle but they plan on driving that thing into the ground!

    a funny story about the taxes segement... when my wife got her first pay check after post secondary school she said 'that's all i get!". very interesting how complacent we get about it. you seem like a great family unit who has a lot of respect for each other. Dad, good job!

    Wow. This is, by far, my favourite episode of you guys yet. As a father of 2 (both under 8), trying to bestow these similar lessons to them day in and day out hasn’t been easy. There were so many times when I was tired or out of patience, and I would just “cave” to their demands. After watching this episode, you’ve reminded me why I can’t give up as a father because I owe it to my kids’ to show them the right ways. Thank you so much, and keep up the great work! P.S. - thanks for the tip about setting up “In-Trust” accounts too! Would love to hear any recommendations, if you have any please!

    Another fantastic video Brandon. Jesse made me laugh out loud with his “I’m gunna pass it down to my kids” comment! 😅 I still remember my mom teaching me how to do my taxes as a young teen - I did my own taxes through all of University and I was happy to save money. My parents instilled frugal values in me and I try to carry them onto my kids. Great video and Happy Father’s Day Marc. Nice to see you and your boys together.

    I did get a lot of stuff as a kid from my parents, but everything I got was a battle. In my teens I was taught about credit cards, how much they paid on specific bills, taxes, etc. when I got my first job in Gr 11 (summer of 2007) I was cut off financially from my parents (they said if im capable of working then I wont need their money), anything I wanted I had to go out and get myself from that point on. This instilled in me that when I get money, I want to hold on to as much of it as I can. My parents didnt know about investing so I had to learn that myself later on in life..... I KNOW 90% OF PARENTS DONT DO THIS...... IF YOU OWN A HOUSE TEACH YOUR KID WHAT A MORTAGE IS AND WHAT GOES INTO PURCHASING A HOUSE. ITS THE BIGGEST PURCHASE YOUR KID MIGHT EVER MAKE. I have no clue why alot of parents dont do that.....
