Professional editor and director here. I would say that all of this depends so much on the direction given to the editor. I think most of these were well done, but I don't think the price difference is really a justified comparison. Price can also be about how experienced the editor is working with directors and producers. There are many people really creative who never worked in a collaborative manner and that's where the price usually shows itself. The ability to consistently input creative quality for each and every iteration of feedback from others. So even though some high paid editors might be considered less good in these edits, they might be well worth it in a collaborative space. Since there's so much else going on in commercial editing, with target audiences, visions, company identity markers etc. it's very hard to actually know the direction just based of music and material. I think that’s why the $500 is getting a lot of hate, and a lot of love. After seeing some fantastic ads for $100 or less, theres no possible way the $500 one could differentiate enough to show $400+ worth of difference, it’s just not possible. I also think he loved the $500 so much partially because he felt he had to.
The $500 edit was the most unique, perhaps the most memorable for the customer: "oh it's pizza ad where they reverse the making of a pizza" i hated it at first look, but now i think it's kinda good
It’s still bad. Cheese coming OFF a pizza just didn‘t look appetizing. I would’ve glossed over it if I saw it on tv. Granted, I don‘t like how the b-roll was filmed in the first place, so that added on to the dislike. But the whole reverse thing with the ingredients just does not work well with cooking. People are trying to see the finished dish, not the dish being unmade, made, halfway completed, still being made, then random cheesy pizza at the end.
@@shadypalmtree2989 IMO, this is the costs more = better product fallacy at work. It was a strong, creative choice by the editor to use the reverse gimmick but it was ultimately one of the worst out of the bunch for the reasons you mentioned. It would have been better to blind taste test this rather than giving out the prices he paid for each before you saw them.
Same! I don’t know if these people really don’t have a refined experience with pizza or what, but the most appetising appearance of the pizza is when it is in the oven; not when sad and flat looking ingredients are being scooped from metal Subway containers. Cheese melting and forming bubbles, the fire cracking, the ingredients changing colour from the heat... that’s what makes someone’s mouth water. Pizza in Italy is a refined experience every single time, and that’s what every pizza commercial should be aiming.
Total honesty, I love these videos. I am an amateur video editor & at first I get intimidated by the views you get & footage quality. But then watching the video I see how different all the edits can be & it is uplifting.
Daniel, whenever I feel down and don't have inspiration and just wanna give up on videography, I just watch your videos and it all comes back. Thank you.
Don’t know if has already been suggested, would have been better not knowing how much each cost until the end. Removes the unconscious bias. Pretty cool to see the difference in approach though.
You mean conscious bias, not unconscious bias because the term you’re looking for is anchoring once a price has been given before the value has been shown.
@@Montoya2005 yeah you might be right. I was having this conversation with my friends the other day of what the difference in biases are. Though I still question if the assessment on quality is intentional or not; that we assign quality based on price knowingly or not - I'm still on the fence.
I feel like a more telling challenge would be to ask these editors what they can do with footage that is NOT that good. That footage is very nice. It didn't take a lot to make it look that good, and it was all shot in a way that already begged for pretty specific ramps and fast cuts. But if you're an editor on here you know the real challenge is when a client gives you bizzare, disjointed crap, random frame rates and requests a bunch of text and cuts from terrible interviews, etc. A good editor can kill it with good OR bad footage.
The 500$ one might be the most video-technically unique, however from a marketing standpoint I would prefer the 25$ one. Edit: Wow, I guess a lot of people agree. Thanks for boosting my self esteem:) Now I guess it's time for the shameless plug: I try my best to create videos that are both effective and video-technically unique, so if you're interested I'd highly appreciate if you took the time to check some of them out!
Trygve Hals Butenschøn came here to say exactly this. Great display of skill for a reel, but won’t sell more pizzas. I’d go with the Lukas voiceover one, if it was my store.
The difference between the $500 edit and the $25 one is that, although the most expensive one has the best transitions, it makes the viewer a bit sick because of all the reverse shots while the $25 edit lets you pay more attention to the product (which is the whole purpose of an add) and it even makes you HUNGRYwith those shots and, specially, those sound effects of the pizza being cooked. He really needs to rise his prize!
Oh come on. The $500 one was the most creative and appealing for me. The guy that charged $25 should charge more of course, but it was nowhere near the $500 one.
Agreed. There is something to be said about just letting the viewer see the hot, steaming, moist food. 500 dollar is certainly the best edited, but the goal isn't to win an editing competition, it's to sell pizza.
One of the best cinematographer out there bro your fire 🔥🔥🔥I wonder what you would come up with? You guys should do a collaboration with DANIEL super pumped to see it actually give him your footage and he gives you his.... how about that?....
With the $500 edit, that is somebody who took your footage and did something outside the box with it rather than just putting it in a sequence. You can tell that is somebody who's done some freelance work and knows how to put a creative spin on it, I loved it!
That's what I loved so much about it- I was so caught up in how "different" it was from the rest that I didn't even notice that there was no sound design! I think with some extra polishing that would make for an amazing commercial.
I actually disagree. I feel like as an advertising, there should still be a bit of a narrative and he kind of took that away. It was more of a music video tbh
9:00 that was soooo depressing... The cool colour tone, that sad slow music and that man talking... It just seemed like a documentary about the pizza's death😂🙆
WUT. The technical skill and creativity for the $500 video was worth that much, but it was confusing af as a pizza commercial. It's disorienting to see a product being unmade for almost a full 30 second commercial. It's fine as a fun creative flair for one shot, but confusing when the whole commercial is like that. Oh and the second VO was fucking fantastic.
This was actually really intriguing video idea. I have always edited things for a very specific niche, but seeing how all there people made this footage work was amazing. That fact that he would pay $500 for that top one really forces me to take a second look at “silly YT stuff”
Yes, at the start i did think that this would get boring. But hey here i am. Finished the entire video. Commented my top 3. And looking for some interesting comments.
I can't believe no one's talking about the 35$ one, it's easily my favorite and the best out of all these for me. The rythm with the music looks so good it got that funky vibe to it, everything is sooo clean, even the fast paced transitions made sense, nothing really doesn't as well. It was shockingly good for the price (way cleaner, cooler and got more rythm than the 25$ one in my opinion, I don't know overall it looks more professional even if both are insane value for the price)
35$ one was my favorite since it felt most fluid and authentic. Upper priced ones were too much over the top for me. I prefer fluidity over slow "smooth transitions" so that visual cues are more condensed instead of being unecessarily stretched and corny.
that's what revisions are for tho, I don't think any were made for the sake of this video's "judging" part. It seems a bit normal for freelancers to overdo "cool" or "eye catching" things so the client will either say "that's it, that's 500$ right there" or will say "yeah let's tone it just a notch." Well from my experience anyway, a lot of clients tend to not go for subtlety.
The 500 dollar one was overproduced. As a customer, if I had to watch that more than once I would groan and mute it. More effects does not equal better video.
Nope he does its also a business strategy you offer a service for cheap so you get two things experience and customers Experience goes a long way which in his case hes delivering more than hes paid for and getting better reviews for it he'll be the one not available for less than 500 in coming years
how do you know the $25 one wasn't some 14 year old kid's side hustle? or someone in the global south where $25usd is a LOT of money for 0.5-2 hours of simple yet mentally engaging desk work. just because YOU find good value in something doesn't mean it's produced by "that poor guy who doesn't know his value".
When i saw the 25$ one i couldnt imagine how good the rest could become, but at the end they werent that impressive, its just that the 25$ guy is way too cheap for his quality
The 25$ Commercial made the pizza look really fresh and appetizing. I thought it might just be because it was the first one that I watched so I had to rewatch it again afterwards but I got to say that from a consumer perspective, the 25$ commercial looked the most appealing to me. The other ones were... Too flashy, idk. I don't want to see a pizza being disassembled, rofl. I'm surprised you ranked the 25$ so low. I Dont know about editing but I Dont care. The objective was to make the best commercial ad right? The best edited video would be the most appealing one rather than the most flashy one in this case.
I'm with you on this... I also didn't like the last one. But when he says it's creative and all, ok fine. But it's pizza not a song.... I see what he probably tried to do. He made it made with the upbeat song but it's pizza. Pizza is art on it's own... :O
aiGeis I loved how creative it was. It was different from everyone else. It felt fresh and new. But then like most people said, it loses it’s touch. Reverse Reverse!
Yo that second voice over was so damn good The $500 guy over-edited that imo. It's a simple concept, needs more simple edits. $25 definitely the best I honestly hope he charges more in the future
@@confusedcat-sm9cy i know.. But then again nearly every edit looks like worth 50 to 100 dollar, not more than that.. And u can't tell which is less than or more than 100$.. So yeah 25 dollar edit was better cause it stood tall next to all pricey edits

The $500 edit was the most unique, perhaps the most memorable for the customer: "oh it's pizza ad where they reverse the making of a pizza"
i hated it at first look, but now i think it's kinda good
It’s still bad.
@@shadypalmtree2989 slow mow cool
you small pp = small brain
@@shadypalmtree2989 IMO, this is the costs more = better product fallacy at work. It was a strong, creative choice by the editor to use the reverse gimmick but it was ultimately one of the worst out of the bunch for the reasons you mentioned. It would have been better to blind taste test this rather than giving out the prices he paid for each before you saw them.
The reverse video is very common, I saw it used tens of times. Very well edited, but not really innovative... and kinda weird in some parts.
100$ is the best
The crackling fire on the $25 woulda sold me immediately.
True!
I also loved the guzzle noise of the sauce bottle
Should have been leveled a little better panned slightly and had some eq
That audio is from a fireplace tho..it sounded slightly off to my ears. Idk if anybody else agrees.

Don’t know if has already been suggested, would have been better not knowing how much each cost until the end. Removes the unconscious bias. Pretty cool to see the difference in approach though.
right on
You mean conscious bias, not unconscious bias because the term you’re looking for is anchoring once a price has been given before the value has been shown.
@@Montoya2005 you actually mean subconscious bias
Great idea for the next video. Hopefully he does one of these again..

Yes, the footage from clients, are never good.
I feel like that's all I've ever worked with, so you're giving me hope that when I DO get some good footage, I'll knock it out of the park.
Besides the ultra professional $500 one, i thought the $35 ad was it. Loved the movement and the way it flowed with beat. Super nice.

Totally! I feel like the £500 one was amazing for like a hiphop music video but definitely not an ad
Oh come on. The $500 one was the most creative and appealing for me. The guy that charged $25 should charge more of course, but it was nowhere near the $500 one.
The $500 was amazing, got me chills with a pizza commercial and now I am hungry
Funny because for me the 25$ gives me a bit of motion sickness with the rapid zooms and turns. He definitely needs to raise his price tho.
Agreed. There is something to be said about just letting the viewer see the hot, steaming, moist food. 500 dollar is certainly the best edited, but the goal isn't to win an editing competition, it's to sell pizza.
I have never taken an interest in editing like this before this video. Wow thanks :)

@@danielschiffer at some point the video lost the magical touch.. I don't know why exactly, but that's how it felt like, look at Peters reply

It looks good. But I still like 25$ more. Maybe 35$ can go into top 5.
