- John Hodgman's PBS documentary, Hobo Matters. If not the most celebrated episode of The American Experience, certainly the most astounding, not only for the number of facts packed into this short episode, but also for the fact that PBS actually produced and dared to air it.
Unfortunately, this chronicle of the Great Depression and the Hobo Wars was quickly erased from history by the powerful Hobo Queen for it revealed too many secrets about the hobo world.

My history teacher showed this in class today without any context
I bet there's already a growing conspiracy theory crowd around this bible, building another flat earth society...
We do that kind of thing sometimes for fun.
@@benbaselet2026 if not, I'll make it real
Thank you for this. My grandfather was a hobo in the great depression, as I am now a hobo in this mighty recession. We as a people need to know the hardship that us hobos face when the country is prospering. Please everyone that reads this, dont work and be lazy so we can once again prevail.
Are you alive ?
how are you doing now?
This is easily the best and most informative documentary PBS has ever done.
"As long as there has been railways and liquor, which is to say, Always."
God damn genius.
i'm so glad they finally found the funds to get this produced.
My Pa' was a Hobo... he passed down his wooden teeth to me, wrapped in an old 'Pappa Feelie's Lineament" wrapper, and whispered, as he lay dying in a pool of pure wood alcohol..
'We shall rise ag'in!'
I got my junior year highschool teacher to put this on in class one day. Good times. A surprising amount of people were not paying any attention.
Damn!! John Hodgman is really glamorizing the hobo life style; it's making it hard to resist.
I was a Hobo for 30plous years I am 74 Year old now. When he made this story I was still a hobo. I first seen-it in Toronto where I was, illegally
this, sir, is a brilliant version of Hodgeman's book. I never actually bothered to find an audio version but it's great that he actually used the material he mentioned in his daily show interview. Bravo!
Best parody of Ken Burns' style I've ever seen. Bravo!
This is an excerpt of a whole book he wrote that is all in this style, informative on many issues of history and science. The Areas of my Expertise.
I didn't realize hobo's were actually super humans capable of summoning giant dust storms and then ascending to the stars...Shenanigans, I say.
+Blue Money Why do you type "hobo's"? Since you're not referring to something that belongs to a hobo, it doesn't make sense. You didn't realize hobo's WHAT were super humans? Hobo's arms? Hobo's legs? Hobo's offspring? Or possibly you were referring to the plural of hobo, which would be hobos - that would make sense.
This whole video is just full of fake romanticized nonsense gibberish from fiction books. What a joke.
I love how it's the same photo and the same music track OVER AND OVER AND OVER...
Haha, love how the camera starts out in one direction and then goes in another direction.
I was looking for something to show with a lesson about hobos, and this was a total jackpot! Sadly, I can't use it with middle school kids, but I am saving it for my own entertainment. Priceless!
This was Brilliant!! How does a man having a cist popped have 2 million views and this hasnt??? Craziness..... Long live the secret hobos . . . I'll leave a saucer of hooch out for you.
This story brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my lips.
You need to keep an eye out for the intersecting circles. The local sheriff carries throwing stars!
this is perfect, thank you for posting this
I love this. It's like Great Depression Madlibs.
Disappointed that this wasn't a real doc. The idea of a real documentary series written and starring John Hodgman based on his books would be perfection incarnate.
I love how it is the same picture.
Hehehe... This is a chapter from The Areas of My Expertise.
I ♥ John Hodgman. lol
Best thing I've ever heard EVER !
This makes my day every time...
THIS
IS
AWESOME
absolute brilliance.
Listen to John Hodgmans: The Areas of my expertise.
Then you will understand.
Mr.Hodgman is epically awesome
PERFECT!!!!
Finally, BBC does something entertaining.
I heart John Hodgman and his book.
i liked the part with the picture of the hobo.
Just brilliant. Hodgman is a genious. Everyone should, if not already, read Areas of My Expertise.
this is great....! Hobo Jazz wants to have John at a show!
I always knew that something had happened to the hobos. Its nice to finally get confirmation!
Genius.
The local sheriff carried throwing stars,... LOL.
very disappointed that the lower right corner of the photo was used much less than the other areas of the image. why? why was there no slow panning to the lower right? THAT is what Hodgman doesn't talk about. why? why?
I edited this, and lemme tell ya, i WISH i could have done that corner justice, but network politics, amiright?
One thousandth like, baby!
My history teacher showed this video to our class before watching herself.
The absolute best part was the repeated use of the same picture
Audio is from his audio version of his book.
I demand a Half-Barrel of Swallowfeather Sauce!
YES
HELL YES
Hobos have come a long way. We are fighting to get Wifi on the railways and underpasses across the country.
who mixed this video of the bit from the book
or is this actually from john?
Thanks, I was trying to figure out why the narrators sounded familiar! lol.
John, you're a funny guy, but I'm worried that your stories will one day be in history books.
It's called the Ken Burns effect.
This is satire! John Hodgman is a writer and
humorist. I can't believe anyone took this
seriously.
@Yosef9438 Hobo isn't an offensive term, it just describes 'wandering workers'. as opposed to tramps or bums who don't work/work when forced to.
I love hobos
"and drinking, drinking, drinking..."
It was in the Mediterranean at the time, of course.
hobos rock
My Peppo, died when the bank of America crashed. RIP Pep
That's just Hodgman's style of humor; he mixes a few facts in with a lot of absurdity that sounds vaguely like facts >_>
"FDR poisoning the country's water supply with a kind of super polio that he created in his secret White House lab, in order to cripple all the hobos" does sound vaguely factual.
Hey, it's PC!
A hobo with the internet.
Ken Burns smackdown ftw.
lava! yes!
3:21 the animals went into the arc, hoorah, hoorah...
@Yosef9438 I wan't aware that "hobo" was a bad term. I'd be interested in hearing the reason, and whether or not it's the general feeling among hobos or simply your opinion. I found quite a bit of information on the internet to use in my classroom, such as hobo signs, and none of the sites used any other term. The kids are very fascinated in this lesson, and I would be happy to let them know if the label is considered offensive by hobos.
Now they move from town to town, fitting in under the title "hipster."
YAWN!
i figured it was made by a fan
wait...did pbs believe this??
i almost do lol
"carving...the buffalo into a hobo...dressed as a buffalo"
hahah
@brianamo1 It's funny, because if you listen to the audiobook JH first proposes a documentary just like this one (panning from one side of the picture to the other). He claimed "It was going to be very cost effective." Kudos, for zouyan for making this a reality!
kansass pubic skools
"b-cus sum body has ta picup yer trash"
i love america
So who are the new hobos and what will be their polio cuz we all know history repeats!
Yeah, but the I think the first credit (narrorator) should have been changed from Colm Feore.. Sick tho! Hodgman rules
Not sure if being trolled.
Or being trolled.
Holy shit, who told the hobos about the internet?
lint knitting
LOL!Hobo Empire!
thatsthejoke.jpg
yes please show the same photo over and over again!...
polio?
Fucking Roosevelt. hahahaha!
Hobos rule
Why is Hodgman so obsessed with hobos...?
Secretary Hobo Joe Junkpan
@GodHatesPortugal ... Macintosh owners?
those hobos didnt have youtube
Known by we Irish (before you American adopted it) as "Johnny I hardly knew ye!" All folks songs get adapted. Be kind to others.
Haha, so many people taking this seriously. I'm not even from America, so my knowledge of American history is very limited, but even I can see that this is satire.
i thought i was going to seel hobos
And you mystify me. Please tell me the answer... I apologize to you, stranger, for my ignorance. I have no background knowledge and when I read dissenting comments I just wanted to know if this was actually on PBS or what. I wanted to believe everything in this video.
No, this was not created by John Hodgman.
i have herd roomer of hobo camps poping up here and there thay are comeing back to liberate us
If you're a hobo....how do you have a youtube account and a computer and such...no disrespect just a simple question.
Haha, it's a very funny ruse.
broken souls? you meant awoken souls
got some change??
This is so obviously fake...but glorious!
I weep for the future now Barack Hobobama will be president. No hobo regime!
I would rather be a hobo than have my freedom taken away
LOL Yeah that's pretty bad there boswellchrome...
Could somebody tell me the intention of this video? Was it really on PBS? What "genre" was it supposed to be (how is it supposed to be taken)? Thanks.
